What are some books based off of fairy tales?
I'd like some lists of books (mainly books, but movies too) based off of fairy tales, old operas, ballets, history, or are in general re-tellings of classic tales.
Here are the ones I have/know of:
    Anything by Mercedes Lackey
The Once Upon a Time Series
    Anything by Robin McKinley
    (Another) A Cinderella Story (movies)
    Sydney White (movie)

    Anything helps...thanks!

    • ANSWER:
There was a loose series of novels based on fairy tales once, edited by Terri Windling:
The Sun, the Moon and the Stars by Steven Brust
The Nightingale (The Nightingale) by Kara Dalkey
Tam Lin (Tam Lin) by Pamela Dean
Jack the Giant-Killer (Jack the Giant-Killer) by Charles de Lint
Snow White and Rose Red (Snow White and Rose Red) by Patricia Wrede
Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) by Jane Yolen
White as Snow by Tanith Lee
Fitcher's Brides (Bluebeard) by Gregory Frost

Perilous Gard is based off the same ballad as Tam Lin, listed above.

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede--YA, but still good.

Also, if you like comics, I would recommend Castle Waiting by Linda Medley--there is an omnibus of collected issues. It's a great deal of fun to find all the references to the different fairy tales.

  14. QUESTION:
Seeking movie version of Cinderella where her mother's grave is below a tree and the tree provides her finery?
I would probably have seen this in the late 60's. Cinderella wishes at the tree and it drops a beautiful gown and slippers for her to wear to the ball. I don't recall it being a musical.

    • ANSWER:
Could that have been the German version called Aschenputtel or Ash Girl? The father brought back "a hazel-twig" from one of his trips. Cinderella planted it by her mother's grave and it grew into a magnificent tree with white doves in it.
Here is the original Grimm's fairy tale: http://www.grimmstories.com/en/grimm_fairy-tales/aschenputtel
EDIT: You may have seen Aschenputtel (1955) -- # 89 on this long list of adaptations of Cinderella: http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0005757/

  16. QUESTION:
What are some good movies to rent for Halloween?
I was going to rent some scary movies for Halloween this year. Any suggestions? They can be classic or new.

    • ANSWER:
I usually space out movies over a few days before Halloween. That's why I'm giving you such a long list. I like the feeling of Halloween to linger. So if you go for maybe 1-2 a night. You can get through most of these movies a week before the 31st.

If you don't mind subtitles, there are some really scary Asian horror movies. So here's a small list.
"Marebito" is a very strange ghost/vampire story.
"Audition" is about an obsessive/psycho girlfriend.
"Cinderella" is a revenge story about a burn victim.
"Ju-On" is the Japanese/original version of The Grudge. But let me tell you that I feel that "The Grudge" is actually a little scarier. Ju-On 2 has more pop to it to be honest, but the first movie has more of a realistic feel to it.

So, that's my Asian film list. Now to my regulars. Definitely see if you can get the following. I'll give you ten.

      Texas Chainsaw Massacre
      Pet Cemetery
      The Exorcist
      Jacobs Ladder
      Susperia
House on Haunted Hill (Black and White version)
The Ring (Just for kicks. I personally don't think it's scary") Try Ringu instead.
Creepshow. They are silly but I got a few scares out of them.
      RoseMary's baby
      The Omen (Older version)

  18. QUESTION:
Why in most walt disney movies does someone always die?
I was just thinking and in most movies someone dies like the mom or dad.
Is there a reason or something?

    • ANSWER:
Disney uses Happiness, Sadness, Surprise, Laughter, and Fright to make their movies as a recipe for greatness.

Of course, the following isn't a complete list, but its food for thought:

Death in movie: Nemo, Lion King, Bambi
Raised by one parent: Little Mermaid, Dumbo, Chicken Little, Toy Story, Beauty & the Beast, A Goofy Movie, Pinnochio, Remy in Ratatouille, Pocohantas, "Penny" in Bolt
Raised by step-parent (both birth parents died): Snow White, Cinderella
Raised by no parents/orphan: Jungle Book, Oliver & Co., Meet the Robinsons, The Rescuers, Tarzan
None of the above: Robin Hood, Aristocats, 101 Dalmations (kinda)
Happy Disney Families with a mom & dad where nobody dies!!: The Incredibles, Mulan, Lady & The Tramp

Using different emotions pulls you in and hopefully/usually makes for a great movie. Most people can relate to one of the above situations somehow, so Disney movies appeal to many, many different types of folks.

  35. QUESTION:
A list of fairy tales that actually have fairies in the story?
And I mean the original stories, not the animated movies.

    • ANSWER:
Do you consider "A Midsummer Night's Dream" a fairy tale? Other than that all I can really think of is "The Three Fairies" if you are speaking of classic fairy tales. I'm sure there must be others than this, but fairy tales weren't called that because they had fairies in them. They were actually referred to as tales of fairy and not fairy tales. Fairies are whimsical creatures who do as they please at any given time simply because it pleases them. Therefore, they are creatures of fancy. Fairy tales are tales of fancy, fanciful tales.

BTW the original Sleeping Beauty did not have a fairy in it. Nor did the original Pinocchio. Cinderella did, though.

EDIT: The original tale of Cinderella did not have a fairy godmother in it. It simply had a fairy. The fairy godmother bit is a Disney thing. The original tale of Pinocchio had Pinocchio killing the cricket, too.

Oh, Peter Pan had a fairy in it, though. So now we have 1) A Midsummer Night's Dream, 2) The Three Fairies, 3) Cinderella, and 4) Peter Pan.

EDIT: Again, the original Sleeping Beauty does not have a fairy in it. The original Cinderella has a fairy in it but it isn't a fairy godmother.

Scottish lore has tales with fairies in them, but those aren't really fairies in the traditional sense, which is why I didn't mention them. They are more along the lines of being pixies or nymphs. Fairies are neither benevolent or malevolent, but pixies are. Scottish tales have them choosing up sides.

  36. QUESTION:
What were some fictional events in the movie "Cinderella Man"?
I know that Max Baer wasnt really that much of a jerk as they make him in the movie, but got any other examples?

    • ANSWER:
At one point - given as 1933 - Braddock reports a dream of dining at the Ritz with Mickey Rooney. Then only 13, Mickey Rooney was in the film business but not a name to recognize in Braddock's slum. He starred in a series of comedy shorts at the time, but going by the name of Mickey McGuire. Only from the late 1930s through the 1940s would Mickey Rooney become a top star and household name.

While the Braddocks were entering the fancy restaurant, the band was playing an ebullient version of Opus One. Opus One wasn't out until 1944.

The credits list Benny Goodman's version of "Don't Be That Way" as the song playing in the club when Braddock meets Baer. That version of the song was first performed/recorded several years later, in 1938, at Carnegie Hall.

At the end of the final fight scene, when Braddock is celebrating with his corner, one of his trainers, the man who Braddock kisses on top of his head, is wearing modern spectacles.

Braddock goes to Central Park in March, 1935 and walks through a Hooverville in search of his friend Mike Wilson. New York's primary Depression Hooverville in 1935 was located on 10th Avenue near the East River (as portrayed in MY MAN GODFREY). There was a small Hooverville in Central Park located in the drained reservoir, not on the grass as portrayed in the film. When adequate fill could be found for it, the homeless were evicted, and the area was transformed into the park's Great Lawn. Landscaping work was completed by April, 1933, so Central Park's Hooverville had been gone a full two years when Braddock visits it in CINDERELLA MAN.

In the dock yard working scene, a modern-day crane delivers the sacks that Braddock loads.

During the press conference before the Baer fight, one reporter identifies himself as being from the New York Herald. In fact, the paper had been known as the Herald Tribune since 1924, when the Herald and the Tribune merged.

Baer is shown wearing a robe with his name on the back. In reality, the robe that Baer wore to both of his title fits was a prop from the movie The Prizefighter and the Lady (1933). Baer played a character named "Steve Morgan", and that was the name on the back of the robe.

Opening scene is set in late November on East Coast, but despite undoubtedly chilly temperatures, characters sit outside on patio at night without coats; trees and grass are still green.

When Jim receives the in assistance, the teller gives him two 2-dollar bills. The 2-dollar bill, as shown, was not minted until 1976 and thus was not in existence during the Great Depression.

  39. QUESTION:
what exactly is 3d animation with the new toy story 3 movie?
I mean is it like in 3d? or does it have like 3d features in the movie? Just kinda confuse on the 3d animation concept period.. and how is it different from 2d?

    • ANSWER:
A 2d animated movie would be like the old Disney cartoons like, Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, the Little Mermaid, or the newer Princess and the Frog released in theaters like 4 months ago. The cartoons where they actually hand draw and color each frame. 3d animation would be done with computers and things like a ball actually looks more round because of how they can do shading and light reflection with computers. 3d animation would be, Cars, Planet 51, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, etc.

Then you have S3d (Stereoscopic 3d) where you wear glasses to make it look like things are popping out in front of and behind the screen.

Last year there was some confusion because 3d is used both to describe animation and using glasses. Planet 51 was reported as being in S3d like with glasses before it was released in theaters. Then it came out and was not in 3d with glasses. It was in 3d animation. I still see old websites that list Planet 51 as in S3d.

  40. QUESTION:
What should my sister do for her thirteenth birthday party?
My sister is having her thirteenth birthday soon and she doesn't know what to do. She doesn't like sitting around and talking, she always has to be busy. If you could, list at least 3 themes for her thirteenth birthday and at least 4 activities to do. I need help soon since her party will in less than 3 weeks.
P.S Her party is a sleepover!

    • ANSWER:
try doing an at home spa!
my best friends sister did this for her 13th. its a great age. you can get face masks at your drugstore (dont forget the cucumbers!), as well as lotion. paint each others nails. do each others hair. get a girly movie.

also, you could do an awards theme (oscars, academy awards, etc.) she handed out trophies to all her friends for various things (i.e. biggest blonde blooper, best awkward moment) for experiences that she has had with them. its a great excuse to wear a cute little dress and drink sparkling cider. have them sit down to a more elegant dinner... even if its just pizza, you can put candles on the table or something.

disney theme. decorate an "under the sea" theme, with blue and green streamers from the ceiling and little stuffed animals of crabs and such. do an "esmerelda's hideaway" with comfy pillows and dim lighting like a gypsy might have. put a heel on the front step (cinderella-esque). put a rose in a vase (beauty and the beast). create a disney trivia quiz and give a disney movie or something to the winner. play disney music all night. and of course there's Scene It Disney. then, watch some classic disney movies!

      hope this helped.

  50. QUESTION:
When will my daughter outgrow her Princess phase?
She is three years old and talks non-stop about princesses and is obsessed about marrying a prince. She watches Cinderella over and over. I have trieds to switch her over to different videos, but she always comes back to Cinderella. Just wondering when this phase will end because I am a little disturbed by it. I keep telling her that there is more to life than marrying a prince, but she is only three. Those who have been there, done that I could use some reassurance.

    • ANSWER:
It is a phase.. I have the same senerio... My three year old son is watching Stuart Little over and over.. I have most of the adult humor lines right at the tip of my tongue. He is obsessed with that mouse! The more they see you getting fed up, the longer there interest stays. My niece lasted longer because she had it all around her..They bought her the Princess movies, clothes, car, playhouse, shoes, tiaras, bedding, tents, chairs, sneakers and stickers. The list goes on and on. Every holiday it was another princess gift. (she was easy to buy for).
I went to visit recently, and I bought her a box of Princess cereal... she replied, "Thanks! but, I am not into that anymore." I said, "Did you meet your Prince?" she says...."Nayyyyyyyyyyyyy" (like a Horse!) She finally gave it up for a new obsession: "Horses." Her conversations now are all about bridles, saddles, riding styles and breeds. Horses are mentioned in every conversation, I asked her how she was doing in school... she replied, "good, I drew an Arabian horse today in art class.. you wanna see it?" She has two horses now!!! I told my sister... "It is better than Boys!!!!"
Does your daughter have any playmates? I got my son into swim classes and I gave him two options, he can watch his movies in his room or watch my television with my picks!!!! So, his viewing of Stuart Little is less. My television has other kid DVD’s viewing. He can’t change it... I set rules as such, because he was controlling my television. Try this and you will see results.... Good Luck and get your cowboy boots ready.....Horses are around the corner!!!
