Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How did the film The Prince of Egypt do compared with other disney films?
Domestically and at the box office

How much does it make each year?

Is there a list of top grossing or most popular disney films of all time?

    • ANSWER:
The Prince of Egypt was actually a Dreamworks film. It grossed 8,613,188 in theaters worldwide, and was the second highest animated non-Disney film until it was out grossed by Ice Age & The Simpsons Movie.

      Domestically it made 1,413,188.

  2. QUESTION:
How do you audition for the Disney channel or even a Disney film ?
    Hey
I really love the Disney channel and Disney films and wish i could be in them some day but do you have to be American or live there ?
    Thanks x

    • ANSWER:
It's sweet that you love Disney, and want to be an actress, but being a child actor isn't a good idea, look at Garry Coleman.

Concentrate on getting a solid education and then, when you leave school, try and pursue acting as a career. In the meantime, why not do school shows etc.?

  3. QUESTION:
What is the song that is played when advertising disney films at the beginning of the lion king?
I remember a song that I loved that came on an ad for disney films, Bugs Life was one of the films being advertised, if that helps. Im also pretty sure it had the words 'out here in the wild' in it. Its quite an old ad but I can't seem to find the song anywhere!! I would be so grateful if someone could tell me the name of the song! Thanks!
    THANK YOU! 😀

    • ANSWER:
      Baba O'Riley by The Who

Out here in the field, not out here in the wild. Hope you enjoy it!

  4. QUESTION:
How have Disney films caused anthropomorphism in dogs?
Lady and the Tramp would be a good example... dogs do not fall in love, talk or have the feelings depicted in that film.

I'm thinking that Disney films should have some sort of disclaimer or warning at the end. "The dogs depicted in this film are not realistic representations" or whatever.

101 Dalmations and Beethoven (is that Disney?) would be other culprits.

    • ANSWER:
No, because you suspend reality when you go & see a film. Even a young child would be able to comprehend that a dog cannot speak a human language & accept the film does represent real life.

Now Legally Blonde is another matter altogether.....did that dog walk anywhere???

  5. QUESTION:
Who agrees with me that the classic disney films are better than the new films?
I love old disney films like Lion King, Rescuers, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, and Pinocchio.

Those are movies I enjoy watching.

    • ANSWER:
I hate to break this to you, but to some of us, "The Lion King" and even "The Rescuers" are a couple of the new pretenders, not Classics. :)

Are some of Disney's more recent films lackluster, or even duds? Sure. But what about such forgettable features as "Saludos Amigos", "The Three Caballeros", "Melody Time", and "Ichabod and Mister Toad"? In fifty years the good ones of recent years will be remembered as classics, and the bad ones will be forgotten.

  6. QUESTION:
Where can I find a list of Disney films?
I have a moderate collection of classic disney films but I want to know what ones I am missing. Like you know how Snow White was the first one, and the recently released Pinocchio was Disney's second fully animated feature film. I've googled for the list but none of the lists are complete. Does anyone know where I can find this info please?

    • ANSWER:
Try this list. It has the years and everything

  7. QUESTION:
Which Disney films had they been released now would be too politically incorrect?
Which Disney films do you feel as though had they been released this current year would be too politically incorrect or morally wrong for kids to watch? It seems as though things were a bit different several years ago, and in some ways maybe they'd let film writers get away with more, as far as what kids were and were not allowed to be exposed to through films and movies.
Out of all the Disney films from any time ?

    • ANSWER:
Probably most of them. All the princess films (with exception of Aladdin and Princess and the Frog) depict a female protagonist incapable of finding happiness without a man in her life- Belle even falls in love with her captor in a classic case of Stockholm Syndrome in Beauty and the Beast.

My daughter still loves them though!

  8. QUESTION:
Where can I find high res images of Disney film stills?

  13. QUESTION:
Who is Richelieu in the Disney film The Three Musketeers?
The Disney film is obviously a very watered down version of The Three Musketeers, and I think that Captain Pete is loosely supposed to be Richelieu but just wanted some clarification! THanks!

    • ANSWER:
yes. captain pete is richelieu. they've obviously changed him from a priest to the captain of the guards to keep the controversial stuff away from the kiddies.

  14. QUESTION:
Did anyone else grow up on Disney films?
I used to love them and watched the lion king at least 40 times. I could recite it off by heart. I feel sorry for my little sister watching this crap these days. Should I buy some old Disney films for her and 90s cartoons.

    • ANSWER:
The Lion King is very conservative in it's view point. The lighter Lions verse the much darker Scar. Scar associates witht he hyenas who speak with ethnic accents. When scar and the Hyenas take over civilizations falls, pandering to the European myth that brown people are civilization destroyers. We don't see the Lions of pride rock kill, but we see the hyenas as far as the stories concerned cannibalize scar. And all Disney movies are like that. You can take Aladdin, where all the bad guys speak with heavy Middle Eastern accents. Somehow the Sultan manages to be white. Jasmine and Aladdin are both anglicized and Jafar looks very Middle Eastern.

American cartoons and movies will pollute your mind if you're non-white.

      Edit: YUP!

  16. QUESTION:
Is there any symbolism in the old Disney film, The Jungle Book?
I know people have found all kinds of hidden symbolism in other Disney films, but I couldn't find anything about The Jungle Book. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
"I have seen this movie twice on Disney Channel. I noticed that in one scene, I don't remember if it is after Balu and Mougli sing their song of fruit. Then the snake is hit by some black fruit with thorns; the snake becomes as Mickey Mouse because three... more "

this was the only thing i could find online.

  17. QUESTION:
Does Pochahontas die at the end of the second Disney film?
I meant, after the second Disney film, does she die? Because someone told me that she gets a cold and, because she was living in America, she isn't immune to it and dies after the end of the second film, and Disney ends the film before her death. Is this true?

    • ANSWER:
I'm not sure of the ending of the second movie, however yes Pochahontas died of small pox on her way back from England to America.

  18. QUESTION:
Is there any similarities in the way Disney films are filmed?
im doing a project and im looking for the answer, im trying to recreate a film still from high school musical, but, i need to do research into different styles of movie making ETC.

So is there any similarities in other disney films as to the way that High School Music was shot?

    • ANSWER:
Not to be the grammar police, but it's "ARE there", not "is there"
And I'm not really sure. Are you talking like Disney cartoons, or Disney Channel movie type things?

  19. QUESTION:
How many disney CARTOON films can u name that have both parents SEEN & remain ALIVE by the end of the film?
Remember CARTOON DISNEY films only. I know Mary Poppins is one. Someone reckons there are only 2 disney cartoon films where both parents are seen and remain alive.

    • ANSWER:
There are more than a few... I'm assuming you don't mean the live action movies, other wise there would be a ton. Most of the answer's are good... except Shrek, that was Dream Works, not Disney.

  20. QUESTION:
I need help writing a paper on Walt Disney and film history?
I have to write a paper for my film history class and I'm really struggling! I want to focus on Walt Disney films (preferably the films Snow White, Dumbo, and Bambi) but I can't find any common themes between the movies or find any research material on this.

    • ANSWER:
Dumbo and Bambi involve a mother dying....but Snow White doesn't....but Snow white dies temporarily right!?
So you could say death is a common theme.
Maybe write about the difference in the setups of the deaths?

Now let's see Snow white and Dumbo were both gullible [they trusted strangers word. Snow white ate an apple without really questioning, dumbo got into a situation people made fun of him.] And Bambi....was he gullible in anyway? [I haven't watched any of these movies in awhile, and I have the foggiest memory of Bambi so I could be like the worst help I'm sorry XD;]
So if Bambi had anything smiler to either [and it doesn't even have to be the main character] you could say it taught people to be more cautious about their actions when associating with strangers.

Allll of them had animals! [but guess Bambi and Dumbo they were actual main characters with a role.]

But guess that doesn't really touch on film history.
If I'm notttt mistaken, wasn't Snow white one of the first color films? [well I rember some commercial on youtube where they were bragging about how they did the color back when they originally made the movie]

Ohhh that also leads me to another thing with that commercial, they had like alll women doing the color and the inking section but not the animation? And people in the comments were talking something about the working conditions being bad back then. [I saw this commercial a year ago btw]

If you have any of like the Dvd's for each of these series, or could rent them, or find them on youtube, what might be something to look into is the extra's on the DVD's where the people talk about how they made the film. Maybe look into the similiarties of the emotions of the people who worked on the projects
Like watching them is interesting if you have time [I watched one on Aladdin since that's my favorite personal film. And a 2 short ones on the Little Mermaid since they were in my recommendations anyhow.]

Hopefully I was of some help :3

  21. QUESTION:
How many disney CARTOON films can u name that have both parents SEEN & remain ALIVE by the end of the film?

  22. QUESTION:
I need sexual references in disney films for a paper...?
Im writing a paper about sexual references in disney films and other G-rated films. Does anyone know of any sites that might have a LIST of movies that fit under these categories? I've been looking on the internet for a while now but have yet to come across a LIST. Thank you, the person with the best list gets the 10. You may also make your own list if your that informed on disney and sexual references.

    • ANSWER:
Here's the Snopes site referred to above. It debunks nearly every one of those silly rumors about Disney films:
      http://www.snopes.com/disney/disney.asp

I agree about doing real research from reliable sources. I've found several Net sites that buy into everything anyone can make up about a movie, even when it's absolutely false. They probably also believe in the hanging Munchkin and the ghost boy in "Three Men & a Baby"!

  23. QUESTION:
Where can I find Disney films on DVD?
I've been trying to find Beauty and the Beast on DVD... Anyone know where I can find it without going online to purchase it? Or is online my only hope? And not just Beauty and the Beast, but other classic disney films as well... Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
You aren't going to be able to find Beauty and the Beast in stores right now. Disney places all of their classics in the "Disney Vault" after they have been out on DVD for a short time then they re-release them every 7 years. Disney has this philosophy that making their movies available for a short period keeps them fresh for future generations.

Beauty and the Beast was last released in 2002 and was placed in the vault in January 2003, so it should be released again next year. If you really, really want it right now the only places that you are going to find it are online, and Beauty and the Beast is one of the rare ones that I've seen sell for as high as . You could also get lucky and find a used copy at a garage sell or someplace similar for cheap. Otherwise you'll just have to wait until it is re-released.

A handful of movies go into the Disney Vault at the end of each January (I'm not sure if it is more often than once a year). I know all three Cinderella movies and all three Aladdin movies went back into the vault this year, so you should buy those while unsold copies are still available in stores if you want them. Usually you can find out which movies will go into the vault each January by visiting Disney's website or from in store displays. Disney normally advertises which movies will be coming out of the vault on their website and also on TV commercials shortly before they are released (and they are always advertised as "For a Limited Time Only".

  24. QUESTION:
Where can i watch disney films online for free?
Call me sad if you wish, but I love Disney films, but can't find any websites where i can just watch them online for free with no sign up or anything like that, any suggestions as to what websites I can use?
Kindly don't spam me with porn sites though, haha :p

    • ANSWER:

  25. QUESTION:
What are Disney's current thoughts on coming back to traditional animation?
The opinion of most fans who have seen "The Princess and the Frog" is that it's the best film since the "Disney Renaissance"... and it's traditionally animated, just like those famous animated Disney films.
Has anyone heard news on how Disney feels about this, and if they're planning on continuing the traditional animation/musical movie style revival?

    • ANSWER:
The traditionally-animated film before The Princess and the Frog was Home on the Range. It did very poorly, and Disney decided it would be the LAST traditionally animated film. Several years later they relented with The Princess and the Frog.

But I think they still consider traditional animation the 'back burner'. They make more money and get more attention these days with the digital efforts. And they really are wonderful, but I miss the traditional animation. Their main 'target demographic', kids and families, like the digital pics better. Plus I think these days the computer-generated animation is cheaper, even as beautifully and elaborately as they do it.

  26. QUESTION:
Which Disney Films present negative female stereotypes or sexism?
I am doing a research paper for an English class.
My topic is negative female stereotypes presented in Disney films.
My thesis is: Disney films are a great source of family entertainment, but many of these films provide sexist stereotypes to young girls.

I need Disney films that would have good scenes to prove my thesis. I need examples of films that would prove my thesis. I already know I am going to use The Little Mermaid.

Also if someone could give me an example of a new recent film (like 1-7 years old) that would also demonstrates negative female stereotypes

    • ANSWER:
      All of them.

No like seriously I'm not saying that as a joke, literally all of them.

  27. QUESTION:
Can you purchase Disney Film DVDs at Disneyland or Disney World?
Hi, I hear it is a little difficult nowadays to find some of the classic Disney cartoon films in stores. Since I am hoping on attending Disneyland or World within the next few years, I figured these would be the best obvious places to look for them. Anyone know if Disney sells their collection of movies there?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yes both Disneyland and Disney World sell DVD's. But they only sell DVD's that are currently available to the public. That is if the particular DVD is back in the "Disney Vault" and can't be bought in your local stores, it won't be available at either of the parks either.

One other thing is that there is a markup because you are in the Theme Parks, which depending on the DVD can be anywhere from about -. Since the DVD's are identical, if you can find it locally you might as well just buy it locally and not wait until you get to the Parks to save yourself some money.

  28. QUESTION:

  30. QUESTION:
Are there any other parents who don't let their daughters watch Disney films?
Growing up, my father, who's an English lit teacher, never encouraged my sister or I to watch Disney films due to the sexualisation of female characters and plot lines presented to young girls. Now that I'm older, I do tend to aggree with him on the negative influence these forms of 90s popculture have on young children. I have also noticed tones of sexism, and not to mention racism, that can be observed in these films. Do you understand where I'm coming from?

    • ANSWER:
I understand the principles behind avoiding Disney movies.

Girls are getting married at 16.
They usually display unrealistic beauty expectations.
The main characters don't even get to know each other before getting married.
They lead way too many people to assume that marriages don't require a lot of work (which they do).
That no one has to work a job or pay the bills.
      Racism does exist for sure.
There is a lot of violence.

That being said, I grew up with them and turned out just fine.

With my own kids (all boys) I don't avoid them, but I don't go out of my way to watch them. They don't get a lot of screen time at all and they prefer educational shows. My 8 year old LOVES cooking shows and they both love to watch renovation shows with us (ones that actually talk about code and doing things right).

  32. QUESTION:
Why is there no british version of disney films?
For other languages there are two versions in disney films:
e.g. portuguese - european and brazilian
spanish - european and latin american

i understand there is a difference in vocab but there also is between british and american english so why did they decide this for portuguese and spanish but not for english. even the songs are sung differently in the different sp and pt versions

    • ANSWER:
The movies are dubbed in different languages, not different dialects.

A similar instance would be dubbing a film in Spanish without taking consideration for Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban dialects.

Edit: Portuguese is derived from Latin and closely linked to Spanish, but there are important differences between the two that make it quite difficult for people acquainted with one to learn/understand the other.

  33. QUESTION:
Need some "Happy" good morning music, the sort they would use in a Disney film?
You know 90% of the time in a Disney film, when the family is getting stuff together in the morning busy, some music plays.
I need anything that style, by anyone, or suggestions of artists. Can have lyrics

    • ANSWER:
Well when Cinderella woke she would sing a nice happy song "A Dream is a Wish Your Makes" you said in that style so I hope it helps. The lyrics are nice and give you hope.

A dream is a wish your heart makes
      When you're fast asleep
In dreams you lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling thru
No matter how your heart is grieving
      If you keep on believing
the dream that you wish will come true

      I think it's soothing :)

  34. QUESTION:
Why are Disney films so predictable?
All Disney films are the same: Good guys go on some kind of adventure with bad guys trying to stop them and the good guys always end up prevailing. I know they're meant for kids but do they all have to be the same?

    • ANSWER:
i never noticed it when i was a child.

  35. QUESTION:
What are the one or two best Disney films?
Or the best ten. You can answer however you want.

Do you have a favourite Disney film that you would not consider one of the best?

    • ANSWER:
I really like the remakes of Peter Pan and Alice and Wonderland. I'm sure you've seen the Slice in Wonderland previews, but this is the Peter Pan one. I love this movie :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wELaN3V9TSo
Does Finding Nemo count? That movie was amazing. Such a great meaning to it; plus it was funny. :)

  36. QUESTION:
What are some really great animated/cartoon films?
Please don't mention Disney films, Tim Burton films, Miyazaki, or any of the other really known ones. Also, I've seen Ghost in the Shell, and I've heard of Grave of Fireflies, Appleseed, The Secret of Kells, Voices of a Distant Star, Ferngully, the Thief and the Cobbler, Origin: Spirits of the Past, Perfect Blue, and Paprika.

So regular old animated films and anime films are okay here. I'd prefer something that is available in America, something that I can get with an English dub without too much difficulty.

    • ANSWER:
      The Yellow Submarine :)

  37. QUESTION:

      The Aristocrats
      The Fox and the Hound
      The Little Mermaid
      The Rescuers Down Under
      Aladdin
      A Goofy Movie
      The 3 Mousekteers
      Toy Story 1,2 and 3
      Hercules
      Mulan
      A bugs life
      The tigger movie
      Lelo and Stitch
      Finding Nemo
      The Jungle Book
      Holes
      The Incredibles
      The Wild
      Cars 1 and 2
      Bolt
      Alice in Wonderland

My Favourite Disney movie is Aladdin, I just love it, it's such a Disney classic. It's funny, its touching and brings back good memories from my childhood.

Personally the worst movie was Bolt, that was just an awful movie, no good. Didn't like it, Disney on occasion bring out movies with no point and just make a few million out of it, this was one of those movies.

  39. QUESTION:
Which Little Mermaid version is better? the book or the disney film?
in the original story, the mermaid dies because her prince marries another but she does win an immortal soul (mermaids lack souls) and became a daughter of the air to do good deeds before entering heaven. It has religious themes.

in the disney film, well you know. But it doesn't have religious themes and won't offend or upset others.

    • ANSWER:
I really enjoyed the original Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale but grew up with the Disney film. Whilst I don't like the happy ending of the film, I had mixed feelings about the Anderson ending. It was poignant the mermaid dying and I think symbolises the futility of trying to change nature. The religious themes didn't really do it for me and although I liked the fact she lived on with having a soul, the way it was written felt tacked on and disjointed from the rest of the story.

They are quite different and overall I think Anderson's telling is bittersweet.

      :')

  47. QUESTION:
Which Little Mermaid version is better? the book or the disney film?
in the original story, the mermaid dies because her prince marries another but she does win an immortal soul (mermaids lack souls) and became a daughter of the air to do good deeds before entering heaven.

in the disney film, well you know.
though the book may be better, it has too many religious themes and references.

    • ANSWER:
I haven't compared books and movies in years. I don't think they are comparable. I see the movie as a Howard Ashman/Alan Menken musical (not terribly well-filmed) and the book by Hans Christian Anderson as just that. Anderson was a classic. So, despite the very short list of their achievements was the Ashman/Menken partnership.

  48. QUESTION:

    Uni media essay
What conclusions can be reached through a critical analysis of Disney’s films for children? What would critics of these conclusions argue?

what does the last part of the question mean?
    HELP! Please

    • ANSWER:
One conclusion that can be made is that the theme of each movie is good vs. evil. Critics would argue that the theme of good vs evil is common in majority of movies and can be related to religion because the bible is pretty much good vs evil with good wining in both.

  49. QUESTION:
In your trusted opinion, what is a fine Disney film to watch?
Ok, so somebody told me that if i'm going to Disneyworld that I need to brush up on some Disney films because i've seen well, none. So which ones are the best? He's got them all, apparently..

    • ANSWER:
I have recently been forced into watching various Disney films by my friend because he finds it abominable that I never viewed them as a child. He has them all, too :)

Even though I'll never admit it to him, Toy Story is really good. The Lion King is decent and I'd watch Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton remake) again.

If you honestly don't want to watch them, Wikipedia is always right there :)

  50. QUESTION:
Bad morals to be teaching children in Disney films?
I need some 'bad morals' that Disney Princess films impart on young children (eg: Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty et cetera).
    Any ideas/suggestions are greaty appreciated!
    :)

    • ANSWER:
Aladdin - It's ok to steal as long as you're poor.
Little Mermaid - Flake out on your responsibilities, disobey your parents, make a deal with the devil.. and live happily ever after?

I'm sure there's more, but I haven't seen all Disney films... and even the ones I have seen are not too recent.

Edit: Forgot to add... nearly every single Disney movie tells us it's ok to murder, as long as it's the bad guy. =P (Notice how they never go to jail? Always killed by the heroes...)
