  3. QUESTION:
Why Up, a CGI animated film is considered to be a drama film?
I can't find any CGI aniamted drama film any where!

    • ANSWER:
Up (2009) isn't CGI, it's an animated film. CGI is cartoon images they shoe-horn into live-action movies and try to convince us, unconvincingly, they don't look like anything but cartoons, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1998). They're getting slightly better at CGI, see Spiderman (2002) vs. The Avengers (2012), but not much. It still looks extremely fake and cartoon-like and my disbelief is rarely suspended.

  14. QUESTION:
How could I start a career as a film director?
I am 15 and have made a couple action war drama films. But I want to get famous and become a great movie director. Give me a great answer and you might get 10 points.

    • ANSWER:
You're going to want to go to film school and learn all the necessaries. After you finish film school start making independent films, and after you have enough experience studios will begin hiring you to direct films and commercials. You just have to work your way up from there. After you earn a name for yourself, you'll be able to direct your own stuff.

In the mean time, try entering video contests as a teenager, I earned a few college scholarships by entering and winning film contests.

  15. QUESTION:
How could I start a career as a film director?
I am 15 and have made a couple action war drama films. But I want to get famous and become a great movie director. Give me a great answer and you might get 10 points.

    • ANSWER:
Excerpted from the book, "What I Really Want to Do: On Set in Hollywood"

You may actually get your first directing opportunity via a direct relationship you have with an established Producer, Studio Executive, or Actor. Building those connections means living and working in places where those people are.

To that end, while you are writing and/or selling yourself with previous projects you ve created (e.g., short films, screenplays), you should be willing to go to work in the industry no matter how menial your jobs might be. Working as a PA in the production office or as a member of the technical crew will give you some access to those with power who can help you become a Director. Nearly as important, working within the industry gives you opportunities to really learn the nut-and-bolts process that gets a movie made. This experience will be invaluable if you ever get the chance to make a living as a Director. You ve got your dream to pursue, but you also have to keep yourself clothed, fed, and sheltered in the meantime. The trick here is that while you are working in the industry as something other than a Director, you have to enjoy the journey toward your goal because that dream is elusive and may never be realized.

You have to prove to someone with money and/or power that you have the talent and skill required to guide a cast and crew in the creation of an entertaining and profitable product. Any previous experience you have, screenplays you ve written, projects you ve directed, and relationships you ve developed all contribute toward getting you jobs that put money into your bank account.

There is no single way to do this and no guarantee that any of those elements will put you in the Director s chair. A certain amount of luck is involved, in that you must meet the right people at the right time. However, you can improve your chances by being prepared for these opportunities when they arrive. Don t just have an idea for a film. Take all the spare moments you have to sit down and write the screenplay so that when you meet a person who is interested in you and the idea, you ll have something tangible to give him. Instead of buying luxuries like big-screen TVs or a nice car, invest that money into producing a short film to highlight your skills.

And you re not just leaving it up to chance that you re going to meet the right people at the right time. When you have something real to present, like a screenplay or a short film, actively seek out those who can propel your career forward. Try to get your material seen by an agent by asking for referrals from others who are already represented. Submit your screenplays to writing contests. Enter your short films into festivals. You have to be enthusiastic and persistent, yet not to the point of annoyance. Your work might be great, but if people don t like you, there will always be that pleasant someone else around the corner with an idea that is just as good.

There is a LOT more to know for anyone who is serious about creating an actual career in the professional film industry. Look for the book for everything you need to know.

      Good luck!

  16. QUESTION:
Why do women in film often desert their men when the man's life takes a serious downturn?
Just finished watching City by the Sea, and this is what happens, even though the man has done nothing wrong or bad to her. He's in deep shittt, and his girlfriend just can't handle it. He needs support, but she wants out. I have seen this often in Hollywood movies, sometimes with marrieds, sometimes with unmarried couples. Is this really what happens in real life? Why is it seemingly a part of the Hollywood drama film formula? Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
You must have lived a charmed life to not understand this. I could write a book.
Women are opportunists and, due to the fact that they have to bear children, always look to what I call the "Prime Directive" (a little Star Trek lingo there 😉 which is SECURITY. That is why they are attracted to men with money or power. They need a provider. When the man's luck runs out, they find someone else. It's the 101 and you should know that.

      MAYDAY MAYDAY, WE'RE GOING DOWN!

The matter is further complicated, or should I say exaggerated, by the FACT that thanks to 50 years of Feminism. women don't need men any more. Men are now an option. I am all for equal rights, but there are undesirable side effects.

Think in terms of mercenaries. They are happy to take the free energy which a man provides, but when that runs out, so do they and they slam the door in your face.

I hear some people describe drama films and, sometimes, even political films as haunting. What do they mean by that? Are they trying to say it frightfully tragic or suspenseful or what? PLEASE help me!

A haunting movie in this sense means a movie whose message, problems or imagery pops up again at odd moments. For instance, I've watched Bad Boy Bubby. Though arguably not a horror movie per se, the movie's message and imagery pops up every now and again in my mental landscape - it "haunts" me to this day, even though it's been something like 15 years since I saw it.

First, learn humility. Even if you are talented, the people who make movies don't want to hear about your talent, they want to SEE it. Then you have to look for auditions. You have still have to be dedicated, and want to improve. You probably won't get picked right away, learn from it, and move on. Try to get your parents to places where casting happens. I can't stress enough, that casting directors don't want your ego. Persistence and patience!

Next little bit is mine, but it's good advice. "Be Nice

Hollywood is all about helping those you know because they might one day be in a position to help you as well. So, you need to remember this steadfast rule -- be nice to everyone. From agents' assistants to fellow cast members to whomever you meet in Hollywood. Remember, that assistant you treated poorly two years ago might one day become a casting director, film producer, talent agent or whatever. And trust me, they'll remember those who stomped on their toes on their way up the ladder.

Conversely, they'll remember those who were nice the whole way up and they'll be that much more inclined to help them achieve their own goals."

Also, look into improv! (Jegus, everywhere I turn there's someone who improv is good for) it will help you get used to getting familiar with a character.

It's hard, hard work, no matter what your age or skill level.

  36. QUESTION:
Do you need a GCSE or A-Level in Drama to do Drama and Film studies at University?
I wanted possibly apply to a drama university to study drama and film studies to possibly become an actor but does anyone know if you need a GCSE or A-Level in Drama to do so?

    • ANSWER:
I would highly recommend taking Drama at A Level. That is because it gives you the practical skills you need to audition for a Drama degree (and pretty much all universities will make you audition before even considering offering you a place). Unless you have other non-academic experience (or unless you're outstandingly good but most are not that lucky), I think you'd be very daft to assume that a university would accept you. They need proof you have some idea how to act, you see.

If you have non-academic experience (like if you go to a local drama group for example), A Level Drama may not be compulsery as you'd already have some acting skills (though I would still recommend taking it though as all experience is good). But you would probably need an A Level in English Literature as a replacement.

Is Aristotle still right? Is plot still the most important part of present-day live drama and filmed drama?
Is Aristotle still right? Is plot still the most important part of present-day live drama and filmed drama?

    • ANSWER:
I'm not an expert but I would say yes. Without a good plot, what is there to really follow? It helps to make a better story, really gets the audience involved. Without it, it's just a few conversations that aren't linked the well.

    • ANSWER:
I think that will definitely be fine; however, I think it may be the same process as becoming an actor. Currently, I am an independent actor as of now. I will soon be apart of a production crew as well. What I would do is do all that and get the degree in hand. Next, I would search jobs on craig's list on the video/tv gigs and see if there are any opportunities for production crews. Make a resume of all the experiences and slowly ask around. Connections are very important.

Which college has the best programs for the arts in the WORLD (not just USA)? And by arts I mean visual art, music, drama, film, and etc. I know the number one art college in the USA is the Rhode Island School of Design and MICA is also good, but schools like Yale also have good art programs as well as academics. But are there better colleges abroad, like in Australia or Europe? Which college is the best for the arts? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
America's higher education standards, combined with the east coast's generally liberal outlook, makes RISD the best arts college in the world. Not to mention the campus absolutely rocks. I took classes there and my highschool's pretty close. It's situated right in the middle of The Renaissance City, aka Providence. Basically our city was founded on our public art initiative. The exhibits at RISD are absolutely amazing and the atmosphere is unbelievable. I would definitely look into it.

  47. QUESTION:
Does doing a course in Drama or Theatre really limit your career opportunities?
I am thinking about which course to do at Uni and I really love Drama and Film studies but if I get a degree in that do I have a good range of possible career opportunities?

    • ANSWER:
If you want to be a marine biologist, then yes - yes it would!

I presume you mean for a degree.

If you wish to act, or be behind the scenes, then it would make sense to go this route. Drama (acting) and Film Studies have benefits that directly translate to other fields which I think a lot of folks miss.

Communication and interacting with others is vital for many fields, being able to learn and apply things that you learn - quickly - is also important. Both acting and film study (in the realm of creating, not the study of old movies) both require people who can react quickly to new and unusual scenarios.

Don't undersell the value of such traits.

      Use this website:

      www.bls.gov/ooh

It is the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the government and it has a LOT of valuable information in it (our tax payer dollars pay for it, so we ought to use it!). The site has information into fields that you might not have even realized existed!

Best wishes for much success, always!
