Does anyone know how to pitch film ideas to producers?
I have many splendid ideas for sensational films that I would like to pitch to film producers, but I haven't a clue how to do it. Does anyone know of a true website or agency that allows commoners to pitch film ideas to real film producers?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes...I do!

      Im an actress!

      Call Steven Mann @ 416-368-1988

      Good Luck!

Does this sound like a decent short film idea?
I just came up with this short film idea about this odd black teenager that fantasies about committing suicide. He hates every aspect of his life and he's had just about enough with everyone. No one really wants to be around him and he doesn't fit in. It works perfectly for me since suicide is a subject that we all can relate to. Do you think the protagonist should die or punk out? Any other ideas?

    • ANSWER:
OK, it sounds like you have the gem of a decent conflict, but it needs to be stronger, and there needs to be some real tension, like a time limit.

Maybe start with his voice over. "I decided that tonight, at exactly eleven o'clock, I'm going to kill myself." Now you can repeatedly show the clock, and it's a deadline. By eleven o'clock, we'll know, does he do it, or does he change his mind?

To build the tension further, there should be things that happen, that either make him start reconsidering or push him further towards making his plans certain. And honestly, if you play THAT part up REALLY well, you could even get away with ending the film at 10:59. But there would need to be so much there that half the audience is convinced he would definitely opt for life, and the other half certain he would absolutely go through with it.

I saw a movie on Sundance recently about a Muslim girl who accepts a suicide mission to Times Square, and it shows her inner conflict as she goes to the location. It was brilliant.

So this could definitely be a successful film.

You really need to demonstrate, either through flash backs or current events, why he would want to kill himself, and it NEEDS to be a very strong reason (or preferably multiple reasons). Just having enough of everyone isn't strong. The audience needs to see him as so pathetic and his life so horrible that death actually seems like a reasonable option.

Like the girl in Boston who was constantly harrassed: On the bus, she got tormented. In the hallway, tormented and spit on or punched. In class, made fun of. Between classes, more torment. Lunchroom, food spit on. In the bathroom, ganged up on and her face forced onto the dirty floor. More torment in gym. More on the bus again. Finally home, phone calls harrassing her. Text messages. Web sites dedicated to bullying her. Kids throwing things at her window. Her mother yelling at her. Her father. Teachers sending emails home complaining that she's not paying attention in class or that SHE'S starting trouble all the time. It's so horrible that there's no way out... except death.

If you can deliver that with your character's situation, it's not only a decent idea but very timely and appropriate.

Of course, his situation will be unique, but make him a similar outcast and make his circumstances dire, VISIBLY dire. (It can't just be him TELLING how bad it is, we need to SEE it for ourselves.)

How to suggest film ideas to Disney?
I have a idea I'd like to suggest to Disney about a possible future film idea and was wondering if there was any way I could contact them and put forward this idea? it's pretty simple and I wouldn't be looking for film credit rights or anything I just think it would be such a good idea!

    • ANSWER:
An idea is one thing. A screenplay is the real thing. Write the screenplay, then you have something to go with.

How do I pitch my ideas without worrying about them being stolen?
I keep having ideas for all kinds of things from advertising presentations, to book or film ideas, and I have always wanted to try and present them to an investment company, but I am worried about them turning me down, but then turning around and using the idea for themselves. I assume I need to become my own business, but I figured I would inquire to the yahoo answers community and see what you guys have to say, thanks again!

    • ANSWER:
The real world is, you can't. Often we bounce ideas off of people (especially people we respect) to get their input. I invented a gadget one time and a friend of mine, ask if he could use the idea. I answered, sure, I have plenty more. Not exactly smart as he is making thousands and thousands of dollars off my idea! Someone mentioned patents. I done that and there is a hell of a lot more to it than one would think but back to the subject matter. One of the engineering/scientific magazines I subscribe to, advocated filing a patent on everything. That's pretty safe but expensive. Hope this helps but I would need about two hours of your time to answer your question.

How do I start my own film production company (corporation)?
I am not talking about a big studio, basically I just want to incorporate my business name and use it to develop film ideas for production. Would you do this the same way you would a regular corporation? Is there a website that you can complete the whole process from, and is it expensive? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

      * The Complete Film Production Handbook, Third Edition (Book & CD-ROM) by Eve Light Honthaner
      * Film Production Management 101: The Ultimate Guide for Film and Television Production Management and Coordination (Michael Wiese Productions) by Deborah S Patz
      * The Producer's Business Handbook (Book & CD-ROM) by John J. Lee, Jr.

I have lots of excellent ideas for film. How do I contact a producer or someone interested?
About a year back I started gaining interest in film and novels. After reading and watching a ton of films ideas started to come in my head and I started writing all my ideas down. I have about ten ideas for screenplays and stories and some I think could be successful in Hollywood. Is it impossible to contact a big company, producer, or director to pitch an idea to? Where should I start?

    • ANSWER:
Like Ravie said, you have to start with the screenplay. Producers are not interested in meeting no-names and hearing ideas with nothing to back it up. A pitch has to be followed by a screenplay, which they will agree to look at only if they like your pitch. No screenplay = no meeting.

Linda Aronson's "Scriptwriting Updated" is the textbook used at the Australian Film and Television School, and is an excellent resource.

There is also great book called "How NOT To Write a Screenplay", which has a lot of very practical examples of pitfalls to avoid.

Also, be very very careful about throwing your ideas out there to anyone who takes an interest. If someone listened to you and said "yeah that's great" and then nicked your idea leaving you high and dry without any rights at all, it wouldn't be the first time.

What are good ideas for someone making a movie by themselves?
I have Kodak Go-Play video camera but no tripod. Whats a good filming idea for themselves? I have lots of props.

    • ANSWER:
You have hit the biggest problem in the film industry. You need to find a good script. You don't need a tripod but try not to have the camera shake too much. Be creative, pick a word like love or fear and make a story around it. Then go shoot it. Good luck. It's hard to make a good movie.

How to film a scene in a school?
I have a short film idea, and about 70% of the scenes take place in a school setting. There are scenes that are both in hallways and in a classroom. I really don't know how I am going to film this.
My first idea was to film the hallway scenes during the time where everyone is packing up their stuff, and everyone who actually has a role in the movie would just film around everyone. For the classroom scenes, I had a crazy idea that probably won't work, and that was to make sure that first I have a class with one of my friends who wants to be a part of the movie in the term, and second that my teacher is cool enough to let me disrupt class and film for a few days.
I think I'll do the hallway scenes the way I've planned (unless you guys can come up with a better way). My second idea for the classroom scene, though, was to get a large enough group of people, and either after hours, on a weekend, or even in the summer time, we ask for permission to film in a classroom, and I get some adult who can act as the teacher in the scene.
Which method is better? And is there another method out there that I can use that I haven't mentioned to make the hallway and classroom scenes possible?

    • ANSWER:
Either way is good. But I think it would be best not to disrupt class. Not just because class is important, but because some students are stupid. They're going to be making faces and throwing up signs. Its better to have students who are as serious as you in the classroom. I'd say film the scene in hallways with the smallest camera possible so that you get how school hallways 'really' are and not people posing for a camera

How to get into the film industry?
I have a wild imagination. I'm always dreaming and conjuring new film ideas, in my downtime, while listening to my ipod or while relaxing. My mind never stops. I am an amazing storywriter and a very hard worker. My dream would be to share my imagination with others.

How difficult would it be to get into the film industry? I would like to still continue my normal career path, which would be some sort of IT and criminal justice, but is there any way to "make it" in the film industry without sacrificing my original career path? I'm 16, and I believe that anything is possible with insane motivation

    • ANSWER:
You could start off by looking out for auditions in the newspapers and online. Something within your area. If you know of anyone whose parents happen to be working in the media industry, approach them and see if they can help you with fulfilling your dream.

You don't have to start off as the lead role. Look for more minor roles to start off with first. Saves you agent fees (probably), having to have a fair amount of experience, gives you a taste of how the film industry is like before you decide which path would be your future, and get some money over school break. Even extras may get noticed if their performance really impresses the producers/director. Who knows. They may just put you as the lead of their next film if you really really impress them πŸ˜‰

      Good luck :)

Is there any way one can help the movie business in ideas ?
I don't want to be a movie writer but I have some film ideas I would like to give to Hollywood ...
How can I do this ?

    • ANSWER:
Movie business is not easy to break into. Its not about what you know and what you can do but rather who you know and your past reputation. You have to build your way up. I would suggest getting involved with people, entering competitions and producing material people remember, try to have your name on other pieces of work, etc. Eventually people will take your ideas seriously.

You can start by getting one of yours off here:

Does anyone have any short film comedy ideas or scripts?
Does anyone have any short film comedy ideas or scripts?
Me and some guys need to make a short comedic film for a high school film fest. It should be like 5 to 10 minutes. If it could be a high-school related story it would be great. I would give you credit.

    • ANSWER:
Just make up your own idea. I write plenty of scripts, and most of them are based on the trouble me and my friends get into. One thing I did when writing a short film script when I had a writer's block was ask my self a question like, "what would my friends and I do if a really attractive foreign exchange student from France came to our school for only two weeks and we all wanted to date him?" Or whatever works for you, good luck on the test.

Do you think this is a good film idea?
My film idea is called "Zarza". Its about a chubby man who discovers that he is immortal. He then fights aliens and zombies. I have planned the film to be 3 and a half hours long. I have also planned 28 sequals. Did I mention that he can also shoot mole urine from his eyes?

    • ANSWER:
Yeah it's a good idea, but not sure about the name! How about calling it..."He is fat, he is immortal, he fights to the death against Aliens and Zombies and then gets back up again, he can hit a fly at two hundred metres with mole urine...from his eyes!! He is TED the bloke from downstairs!? What do you think,!?

Why are so many awesome books being butchered into Hollywood movie adaptations?
Are they running out of film ideas?

What do YOU like in a horror movie?
I am planning to make horror movies when I grow up, and I wanted to know what people like in horror movies. I have an idea, but so far, people say they wouldn't want to say it -- due to the violence in the film idea -- but they say I have a knack for thinking of ideas. However, I'm not good at thinking of good ideas. What do people like seeing in horror movies?

can i find a screenwriter to help me rewrite my movie storylines into proper screenplays or movie scripts?
I'm Chris Oliver,20. I write good movie storylines but i need a professional screenwriter or script writer to help me translate my film ideas into proper screenplays ready for production. I also need a movie agency that would be willing to produce my stories if it is appealing enough to them. Profits would be a 60 - 40 for interested screenwriters. Please leave suggestions that could help me. Thank you

    • ANSWER:
I'm sure you could find a ghostwriter willing to write your stories for their own fees.

But any screenwriter worth their salt is going to be far too busy working on their own projects to spend time writing yours with no money guaranteed. A 60/40 split is laughable - even if the movie does get made - considering the months of hard work that can go into perfecting a screenplay, and the abundance of good ideas among the writing community. No decent writer needs your ideas.

This is how it works. You - or whoever - writes the script. Then you send a pitch to production companies, usually via an agent, and cross your fingers they request the script. If they do, you send it out and cross your fingers again... A tiny fraction of screenplays sent out end up made into movies, because there is SOOO much competition, and so few movies made these days are original stories.

My suggestion - genuinely - is to learn to write screenplays yourself. Get free screenwriting software from and a few good screenwriting books and give it a go. Or pay a ghostwriter, but be prepared to fork out thousands, and don't expect an easy ride when it comes to selling the finished work.

Can anyone help me with a story concept?
The basic situation in this short film idea I've come up with is this:

Two people are sitting at opposite ends of a long table. One of these people can only communicate through writing letters, which she pushes across the table into the hands of the other person. The other person doesn't understand why she is doing this, but plays along with her game.

I need a reason that this person can only communicate through writing, and a solution. She doesn't necessarily have to be "fixed", but any ideas where to take this story would be greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
Maybe something is wrong with her voice or she lost her voice and needs help finding it or maybe her teeth are really messed up. Maybe he talks really loud and thats his problem... i think the above is more comedic and that might not be your vibe. Maybe shes looking around hoping no one hears her so she writes... maybe her husband is sitting in a booth behind them, or maybe he is wearing a wire and its all covert.

How do you delete resolved questions?
Is there a way? I ask because ive posted a detailed film idea for school, and I forgot to delete it. Now I have to write up a treatment for school on the film, and the teacher may check for plagiarism and see the questions I posted.

How do I delete resolved questions?

Once a question has been resolved you can no longer delete it, it belongs to Yahoo.

You could write to yahoo at and ask them to remove it but it would have to be for a good reason and they won’t always do it.

Also please mention any tips you know for filming, and ideas on how to have smoother recording with less bumps when moving. Also please mention if the camera is capable of harnessing onto a helmet or other objects.

    • ANSWER:
      GoPro or Contour HD.

Never capture handheld. Always use a steadying device.

Capture under good, bright, sunshine lighting conditions.

Lean to use the white balance.

Use body mounts (i.e., helmet, "vest" etc.) when a tripod does not make sense.

Clarification: Digital video capture is not filming - there is no film involved with the capture. Both GoPro and Contour have appropriate mounting accessories.

You did not mention audio. It would be best to capture the audio separately (with a digital audio recorders like the Zoom H2 or H4) and perhaps an external mic.

My kodak 200 gold film is giving me way more exposures than on the box?
My canon ae1 has up to 38, the film says 24 exposures. However, I've gone over 38 and it's still going. I can feel it when I move the switch, and I dont want to check in case I ruin my film. Any ideas what is happening?

    • ANSWER:
If you're really good in loading film you can get 2, maybe 3 more exposures from the roll. Getting 14 more is a sure sign of something being wrong. Could be the takeup slip didn't take, could be it's torn loose.

What you can do is put the camera in a black plastic bag and take that into a darkened room. Gently open the back and feel with your fingers what the problem may be. Using a bag and a darkened room makes this a fairly safe operation.

How would I get someone to make a short-film from a story that I've written?
I have written a short-story and would love to see it being made into a short-film but have no idea where to start or who to contact. I've have no directing or any type of film-making experience so probably would want to collaborate with someone to make the short-film...any ideas where to start?

    • ANSWER:
You can contact your local college or other school that has script or screenwriting courses.

What the writing needs to be formatted into is called a 'treatment' -- basically it's telling what's happening, not only with the actors, but also what the viewer is seeing (e.g. camera shots, music, whether it's an interior shot or exterior). It's really a fancy outline.

Here's a site with some info. on treatments:

Also, you can check out your local library which should have many books on this topic as well.

Finally, consider having someone (a neutral person--not friend or family) read and critique your final treatment; if you can find someone like someone who is in the entertainment business or a professor of film that's the best.

      Good luck!
PS: Be wary of blogs, and people phishing to steal ideas.

How do I submit a commercial idea to coke?
I have this great idea for a Coke commercial or any soft drink really. I just wanted to know if it was possible to submit my idea. And if it is would I have to film my idea or just send it in on paper. And after doing all this is there any actual chance of anyone looking at it or will it just get thrown into the pile. I think it is a really good idea and it actually has a shot at being a commercial. Thanks!

I've pressed the release button on my camera, but trying to roll the film still feels tight?
I've always used a different type, but now I'm using a Nikon camera, and although the release button is engaged the film still feels tight and I don't want to roll it and risk ripping the film. Any ideas as to why this might be?

    • ANSWER:
Are you at the end of the roll?

To be honest, I would err on the side of caution and just rewind the film. I mean, how crucial are the exposures you have taken, is it worth risking losing them for the price of just using a new roll of film?

where would film be classified in the Library of Congress Classification system?
I looked in the Wikipedia list under N for fine arts but it doesn't include film. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
I'm puzzled about your logic. Why search under "N" for "Fine Arts" or "Wikipedia" for the "Library of Congress?"

Instead of looking in Wikipedia, why not go directly to the Library of Congress website (Search US Library of or Library of,

At the top of the Library of Congress home page there is a link/button "Ask A Librarian" which will take you to a list of classification links. On that list is a category, "Motion Pictures and Televison." Sounds like Film to me!

Incidently, most Libraries use the Dewey Decimal System to shelve/catalog their materials and most products, including books, videos, tapes, CDs and DvDs in the U.S. have distinctive ISBN numbers.

    • ANSWER:
Do a film about a childs toy, how it started life in the factory, then went to the shelves and then got bought by a little girl. Years later, it then gets tossed in the bin and then on its journey to the tip, it recollects all of it's time with the girl, and then it gets dumped onto a massive pile of trash and the it looks up to see the sunset and then it zooms out to see a flashback of the toy and the girl sitting together. Fin. If you do use this leave some credit to me please lol

What is the green shiny film on my bacon rashers?
I see it a lot in the supermarket on bacon. Does anyone know what it is?
I don't mean mould- its like a clear, shiny film. Any ideas? xx

    • ANSWER:
Unless it's VERY green, it's likely just the iridescent colour of the thin film of grease that's on the surface of meat. You often see it on fattier cold-cuts like pastrami, etc.

What is the best horror film that you have seen ?
Im a big fan of horror films and seen quite a lot of them..however recently i am finding difficult finding something exciting , all the ones i get just seem to be very predictable and just not scary at all...I like the type of mysterious sort of films, like more of a realistic sort of films like based on true stories (texas chainsaw massacre) and paranormal activity i liked..i hate the vampire, werewolves sort of films.

    • ANSWER:
The "Exorcism of Emily Rose" old but gold, it's based on a true story, and scared the crap out of me, no vampires or werewolf shit involved, I highly advise this horror movie

How can I pitch a film idea to a real producer?
I have several great ideas for films, but I can't seem to find anyone who would be willing to hear them. I have run into several scams and have lost a lot of money trying to pitch my ideas to those whom I thought were the right people.

    • ANSWER:
      You can't!

There are professional writers, that work with producers, and create storylines.

It will be difficult to find someone to accept your ideas, because they do not want the risk of being accused of copyright infringement, if they accept unsolicited material from strangers. Unsolicited material goes in the trash can.
