Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I find free film editing software?
I really need free film editing software, to put together a film I am making for school, but I would prefer it to be quite professional, as I have some idea's which I am not sure of how I am going to do them. I would like the program to let me be able to make custom opening and ending credits.
(Please don't suggest Windows Movie Maker, I need a program to do a lot more sophisticated things than this)
    Thanks everyone!

I've always wondered how people previously unknown to the "business" get into movies. I mean I know some people have connections to people who know people who know..(You get what I'm saying.) How on earth would someone go about catching wind of auditions for TV shows or movies?

    • ANSWER:
Here are THE ONLY LEGIT online sites that you can get work from. ALL SITES NOT LISTED ARE SCAMS!:

      In LA:
      -Actorsaccess.com
      -LACasting.com
      -NowCasting.com
-Backstage.com (they have a weekly newspaper that you can get at stores that lists castings)

      In NY:
      -Actorsaccess.com
      -NYCASTING.COM
      -NYCASTINGS.COM
-Backstage.com (they have a weekly newspaper that you can get at stores that lists castings)

      Other markets:
      -ActorsAccess.com
      -Backstage

      Free but proceed with Caution:
      -ModelMayhem.com
      -Craigslist
      -Mandy.com
      -Castingcallsearch.com

Know that you're ONLY going to see at most 30% of the work out there. ONLY agents have access to the serious jobs or the other 70%.

To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents won't see you unless you're SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. Commercial agents are more lenient about that. What the best Commercial agents want to see on your resume are good commercial classes, improv, and cold reading.

You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways:
-Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too.
-Attend a showcase and impress them.
-Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that you're interested in

      DON'T
-Email them unless they tell you to. IT'S UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Call unless they tell you to. ALSO UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Walk in and ask for a meeting. UNPROFESSIONAL THREE!
-Sign with them if they ask for upfront money, make you take new photos with THEIR photographer, or take THEIR classes. Agent's ONLY make money when you do. Agents usually make 10% on film/tv and commercials and 20% on commercial print.

  11. QUESTION:
How would i be able to meet the right people to get into acting in films?
Would like to do movies, now i know that you can't walk up and start making a movie, but how would i start. I'm 32 and everyone tells me i should be in movies... I also know that it's who you know sometimes....Just wondering.. Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
Get into classes and start building your resume with theatre credits, then student and indie film roles.

Check out backstage.com and actorsaccess.com both of which are industry standards, but not completely free. See if they have good audition info for your area then subscribe for backstage, or pay for the electronic submissions for actorsaccess. You can also subscribe to Showfax giving you unlimited electronic submissions for a year on actorsaccess, totally worth it.

Whils in class and working on shows and projects you need to network. Ask people who they're with (agent wise) and get referrals. Use that to get your foot in the door at legit agencies. Find SAG franchosed agents here: http://www.sag.org/sagWebApp/application?origin=page1.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.refresh&pageid=AgentInformation RossReports.com also has a list (and you can get a combo subscription with backstage.com) but it's not cheap in my opinion, however if you're serious about getting an agent and you're at a place when you are actually ready to do your mailings, it's worth it. They have more information on which agents are accepting submissions and for which types. They also have non-franchised agencies listed giving you more choices, however non-franchised agents may take negotiate comission.

If you're in Los Angeles, look here for classes http://www.workingactors.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?g=Training%2FACTING%2F&d=1 or for an idea of what to look for.

Otherwise you can do a search for your state name and the word film and check out the sites that come up. Each state's film commissions and alliances often have info on local auditions and classes etc.

      good luck,
      Marianne

How can i get movies onto my iPod touch?
I want to get films on my iPod touch cause i will be travelling alot over the summer and dont want to be bored stupid?
I have no idea where to start, can anyone give me a step by step guide?
    Thankyou

    • ANSWER:
      Look no further!
A little background information, iPod Touches use a specific type of file for movies and videos. The mp4 or "mpeg-4" file is the select type. The following websites I am going to provide allow you to download free mp4 movies. All you have to do is click the given link, enter the 4 letter code (if it's at megaupload.com), and download. Once you have the file saved, just drag it onto your itunes and sync.

Just to let you know, each move is about 300mb on average. And 1000mb = 1gb. So make sure you have enough space to save them and also to put them on your iPod Touch.

      http://tysiphonehelp.com/?page_id=147
(at this website there is a video that shows you how to download them directly to your ipod, ignore that because that is only for jailbroken ipods, a whole nother topic)

      http://forums.n-sb.org/index.php?act=Print&client=printer&f=16&t=114689

all 3 of those sites are completely safe, free, and reputable. I have used them all and they work great.

  16. QUESTION:
what are the best free video editors and effects software?
i want a free video editor for film, but i want it to be halfway decent.

i also want to be able to use masking and things but pay a very low price. whats the cheapest editor like that, free would be best?

    • ANSWER:
There's several editors you can use....

Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except that it's picky in what file formats it takes and the lack of native support for multiple video and audio tracks are a definite disadvantage (but there are workarounds).

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html - but you'll have problems installing the older versions on Windows 7. Windows Live Movie Maker is still good, but not so versatile.

      Other free video editors are...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects - - unlimited video and audio tracks
VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://videolan.org/vlmc/ - up to 64 audio and video tracks
      TrakAxPC - www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - http://videospin.com/ - just 1 video track so you may as well use WMM
      VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
      Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one - unlimited tracks ?
      Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ - unlimited tracks ?
      Ezvid - ezvid.com/ - 32 video and audio tracks

Another is Zwei-Stein. This is a good editor but I found the interface to be absolutely horrible.

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

If you want to spend some money then there are reviews of 14 video editors under 0 at http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

More costly are video editors like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere. Both of which are very good. Premiere is probably more advanced but harder to learn everything it can do.

  17. QUESTION:
How Do I find out about Free Events in NYC Before they happen?
I'm always finding out about cool stuff in NYC that are either free or low cost after they happen. I get Time Out Magazine and that helps a little, but is there something better? I especially am interested in things that are going on in Times Square or movie filming's or anyplace to spot a celebrity.

    • ANSWER:
Here are some of the best website suggestions for general NYC events. I'm not sure about the movie filmings. Also, celebrities, unless performing, normally don't want to advertise where they are. However, you can read the NY Post each day to find out which celebrities were recently spotted in NYC.

To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents won’t see you unless you’re SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel.

By showcase I do not mean scammy conventions like IMTA, IPOP, Proscout, or Best New Talent. I mean legit ones like at Actor Connection, Reel pros, Network Studios, etc.
-Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that you’re interested in

      DON’T
-Email them unless they tell you to. IT’S UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Call unless they tell you to. ALSO UNPROFESSIONAL!
-Walk in and ask for a meeting. UNPROFESSIONAL THREE!
-Sign with them if they ask for upfront money, make you take new photos with THEIR photographer, or take THEIR classes. Agent’s ONLY make money when you do. Agents usually make 10% on film/tv and commercials and 20% on commercial print

  19. QUESTION:
How can I start an acting career?
I've been internet-searching auditions and open-casting calls for movies and TV shows, but I'm not sure if all the sites I visit are legit. What are some good agencies that I can check out? I'm an LA Actor giving you the REAL DEAL!

Agencies DON'T cost anything upfront! They ONLY make money when YOU do. They get 10% of what you make from film/tv/commercials and 20 % from commercial print.

How do you find out about major movie castings?
Movies like transformers, i am legend, seven pounds, all those big big movies that are made, how do people find out about the casting in the movies? how do you get to even know how to get there and stuff? who do you contact, where do you go? does your agent find it out for you? what about people who dont have agents? Basically i just want to know how people get into those movies and how do they even find out about it.

what are the best websites to download free films?
i want some new films to watch, i'd prefer to download them instead of watching them online. & i don't really want to become a member of anything?

any sites youve heard about/used would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
OK! I know the answer. U can also download blu-ray movies. Ok. first of all, download a torrent software thingy. For example VUZE or Utorrent. There both good. Then, after u install it, go to either:
      www.thepiratebay.org
      www.isohunt.com
      www.mininova.com

and seach in the box for what movies u want (u can even download software or games etc. u can download ANYTHING and u can get ANY movie). Then download the torrent file which then opens up on ur torrent software. Then it starts downloading and ur download will automatically go to the Downloads folder:)

P.S! Dont forget to check the comments on the torrent to see if theres any viruses! If it dont say it just download it:D

  24. QUESTION:
Can I switch a film from widescreen to full screen with the right software on my computer?
I know it sounds odd to ask however I like to watch some of my movies in full screen but they are being shown in widescreen. Does anyone know what kind of software I can use to fix this problem of mine?

    • ANSWER:
there is an alternative media player, totally free, called vlc media player. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ down load it there. it will play your movies. When you are playing it, you double click the movie to make it go full screen ( meaning your looking at just the movie) To get rid of the letter boxing, right click on the movie, select crop, them 4:3 ratio. this will make the movie fill the screen, but you'll lose some of the stuff going on on the sides. If you buy a dvd in "full screen" your getting the same effect though. To make it go back, right click, crop, default.

VLC blows Windows Media player away, btw. It has ten times as many features.

What kind? And how much? Do they use mac? Do they use PC? And what is the most common pogram used among movie maker (professional) not home video, but something like tv shows or real bigtime movies. Anyone know? thx

    • ANSWER:
An Independent Film Maker I Know uses a Toshiba AMD64bit 3gb laptop 2ghz. and a PIV Dell. Pixar uses Macs (and some PCs like Dell). Dreamworks uses HP's.

I would recommend getting a PC such as a Dell XPS system http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsdt?c=us&cs=19&l=en&ref=dthp&s=dhs http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/xpsdt_gaming?c=us&cs=19&l=en&ref=dthp&s=dhs (of your choice) or Laptop: Toshiba Qosimo http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio?cm_sp=TopNav-_-Laptops-_-Qosmio (of your choice)..
I would not recommend a Mac due to the much higher prices. Anyone who says that "Macs are better than PCs" does not know what they are talking about Macs just use a subset of PC hardware. To make that claim is totally lacking in understanding hardware...

  28. QUESTION:
What editing software to use for taking a bunch of clips out of longer videos and put them together?
I use a Gopro when driving motocross, and want to put the "highlights" together. The films are about 20-40 minutes long and i want to take out bits of maybe 10-15 secs and put them together ?
What will be the easiest way of doing this ? A tutorial of some sort would be great !

The Camera is a Gopro Hero HD 2 and i shoot in 720p and 60 fps. If this matters.
    Thanks !

    • ANSWER:
Nearly every video editor ever made can do this - that's what they do.

How the various editors visualize what you're doing is different though.

In editors like Windows Movie Maker you import the longer video into your project. You can preview it and split the video into chunks which appears as separate pieces of file. You then drag those down to the timeline and put them together.

In others, like Adobe Premiere, you import the longer video into the project then in the preview pane add in and out markers. When you drag the video from the preview pane into the timeline only that part between the markers is used. You can add the longer original video to the preview and add more markers as many times as you like.

Once you've got your viedeo clips put together and added your transitions, effects and titles you then render the finished video. All this means is that the editor takes all the clips and creates a ingle new video file. This is very intensive work for a computer and if you're using an older or middling one, this could take a while.

You can upload that file to Youtube or whatever or even burn it onto a DVD that you can watch using a TV. This usually means another piece of sofware that is capable of DVD authoring. Again these range from free like Windows DVD Maker and DVDFlick to the 0 Adobe Encore.

If you go to http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbWLzF5mVVFYQGxqZ_GCThA/videos you'll see a whole bunch of videos (11 of them) of a guy in a solo concert. All of those came from a single video file that was originally over an hour in length.

The Opal Book Club, The Bronconator, and My Beautiful SUV (one of my hobbies is off-road driving) are made from multiple video files that were edited together.

If you want to explore video editing then there's no reason to spend anything as there are some very good free editors around. Most compete very well with the sub-0 commercial software.

Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except that it's picky in what file formats it takes and the lack of native support for multiple video and audio tracks are a definite disadvantage (but there are workarounds)

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html - but you'll have problems installing the older versions on Windows 7.

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

If you want to spend a little more then there's reviews of 14 editors under 0 at http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Once you've explored the basics and think you've reached the end of what you can do with the free or low cost editors then there's software like Sony Vegas (0) and Adobe Premiere and After Effects (,700)

      5. Get an Agent

      Look up LEGIT agencies here:
      http://www.agentassociation.com/

      http://www.sag.org/content/find-agent

To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents won’t see you unless you’re SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel.

  32. QUESTION:
How much you get paid to create movie trailers?
How much do you get paid to create movie trailers?

    • ANSWER:
Trailers are made by companies, not individuals. You would be working as an editor for the company. Sometimes you would be editing movie trailers. Other times, you would be editing TV commercials, industrial films, training films, etc.

"The people who create trailers often begin their work while the movie is still being shot. Since the edited movie does not exist at this point, the trailer editors work from rushes or dailies. The trailer may be created at agencies (such as The Cimarron Group, MOJO, The Ant Farm, Aspect Ratio, Trailer Park) while the movie itself is being cut together at the studio. Thus, the trailer may contain footage that is not in the final movie, or the trailer editor and the movie editor may use different takes of a particular shot. Another common technique is including music on the trailer which does not appear on the movie's soundtrack. This is nearly always a requirement, as trailers and teasers are created long before the composer has even been hired for the film score — sometimes as much as a year ahead of the movie's release date — while composers are usually the last creative people to work on the film. For instance, Forrest Gump used music from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story for its trailer while the 2008 superhero film Iron Man featured the song of the same name by Black Sabbath in its promotion."

      stay tuned (1992)

A husband and wife are sucked into a hellish TV and have to survive a gauntlet of twisted versions of TV shows they find themselves in
      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105466/

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stay_Tuned_(film)

John Ritter (of Three's Company fame) plays Roy Knable, a couch potato and struggling Seattle plumbing salesman, and Pam Dawber (of Mork & Mindy fame) plays his neglected wife Helen, a senior Vitamin product manager. After a fight (which involved Helen throwing one of Roy's fencing trophies into the family television, smashing the screen and matrix as a wake-up call to reality), Mr. Spike (Jeffrey Jones) appears at the couples' door, offering him a high tech new satellite dish system filled with 666 channels of every program you can't get on the four big networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox).

The dish soon sucks Roy and Helen into a hellish television world, full of satirical shows and movies. In some shows, the Knables are transformed into various roles and forms that fit the plot of the movie they happen to be in at the time. If they can survive for 24 hours, they're free to go, but if they get killed, their souls will go to Satan. They are pursued by Mr. Spike (also known as "Mephistopheles of the Cathode Ray") who enters some shows along with the Knables in order to halt their advance; he too takes on alternate forms that reflect the themes of the various shows. Roy and Spike continue to fight throughout several shows, even in a cloak-and-dagger scenario where Roy displays a long-buried talent as college fencer.

Salt-n-Pepa make a cameo appearance near the end of the film in a "Hell TV" (MTV) segment. Mr. Spike, the DJ in that segment of the film, throws bladed-records at Roy Knable (dressed in a satirical Prince outfit). However, Roy dodges them all and confronts Spike, winning back the remote, and uses it to save his wife from being run over by a train. At the end of the movie, Spike is succeeded in his soul-gaining job by a new upstart employee and gets torn apart in one of his hellish TV scenarios for punishment. Roy, who had learned a very valuable lesson after his adventure, has dramatically cut back on his TV viewing time and has taken up teaching in a fencing class.

-Attend a showcase and impress them. By showcase I do not mean scammy conventions like IMTA, IPOP, Proscout, or Best New Talent. I mean legit ones like at Actor Connection, Reel pros, Network Studios, etc.
-Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that you’re interested in

-Email them unless they tell you to. IT’S UNPROFESSIONAL!

  37. QUESTION:
What is the best low-priced video editing software out there?
Something to edit my game film. I'd prefer it to look kinda professional like some of the compilations on youtube.

    • ANSWER:
I use Windows Movie Maker 2.6 because it's as good as you can get (for free). Pinnacle VideoSpin and VideoThang are two alternatives, but they don't offer as much, believe it or not.

Don't skimp with some random company's movie programs... I don't know from firsthand experience but I don't trust them. If you're looking to buy them try something like Sony Vegas. It's made by a reliable company and has gotten good peer reviews from my old high school. And its price isn't outlandish.

  40. QUESTION:
What is required to show a copyrighted movie in public?
we're a nonprofit org. raising money to build a new city playground. thought movie night would be good. can we charge admin fee. or does it have to be free admin to diplay with out special permission?

    • ANSWER:
it is illegal for you to charge admission to the film without paying the film rights owner/making arrangements with them. (however, if it's a very old film, and is in the public domain, that's different. but mostly that means you're not likely to be showing it as a fundraiser.)

however, there is nothing wrong with asking for donations FOR YOUR ORG (making clear that you are not charging for the film) at that event, which would be a way to fundraise.

  41. QUESTION:
Where can i find book notes on the book The Motorcycle Diaries?
I need notes for the book but can't find a website with book notes on this book for free. Can someone please find me the notes for this book?

    • ANSWER:
      Wikipedia of course!
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Motorcycle_Diaries

Here's the table of contents so you can see what's covered:

      1 Pre-expedition
      2 Expedition
      3 Transformation
      4 Editions
      5 Reviews
      6 Further reading
      6.1 Film
      7 References
      8 External links

It's actually a really good book, you should just read it. If you're having a hard time visualizing it all or getting into it just go and sit on a motorcycle, and imagine it wasn't cutting edge but had technology that dated back over half a century. Now imagine trying to ride around a foreign continent about to break into revolution on it.

If that still doesn't interest you go rent the movie and watch it... and then go buy a damn bike.

  42. QUESTION:
What films/tv shows can you copy and burn onto DVD and sell?
A friend of mine apparently found a few films and TV shows from the 'black and white' era where the copyright was done in such a way where it made it legal to burn copies of them onto dvds and sell them on.
    A) Is this possible?
    B) If so Why?
    C) What examples of this are there?

    • ANSWER:
Yes it possible and many make money off it such as movies like McLintock! (1963) being one of the best examples http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057298/
When a Copyright expires and no one renews it the film is called "Public Domain"
This site is the best one for good videos
      http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=%2Fmetadata%2Flicenseurl%3A%28http*publicdomain*%29%20AND%20mediatype%3Amovies
      another example
      http://www.publicdomainflicks.com/

Just do a search of 'Public Domain movies' and you will see a lot of films that are free and legal to download and some sell them yet there are some legal hurdles you have when you release them.

  43. QUESTION:
I want to be a movie extra in chicago, how is this possible?
I have been looking up information on wanting to be an extra and I just can't seem to find the right information. I live in Chicago and I am looking for work out here. Acting is a passion of mine and I just want to take the first step in being an extra in a movie. Could someone please help me?

    • ANSWER:
      http://www.illinoisbiz.biz/dceo/Bureaus/Film/Events/
      http://www.illinoisbiz.biz/dceo/Bureaus/Film/BreakingIntoTheBusiness/
      http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalEntityHomeAction.do?entityName=Film+Office&entityNameEnumValue=15

You can also set up an account on actorsaccess.com It's free to see what's available and .00 to submit if you're right for anything. You need to upload a headshot and a resume so please have your parents help you so you do not put too much personal info. The phone number should be their cell phone number and they should know what to do if a casting director calls them for an audition with you.

There's also extrasaccess.com if all you want is background work but honestly most of what comes up on actorsaccess is small time anyway. Decent resume builders.

You should also try backstage.com Do a casting search and see if they have anything for you. If you want all the info you have to pay to subscribe so I'd just do the free search and see if it's worth it. You may be able to see enough to search the net for the rest especially with theatre auditions. Just find the theatre's own site. Theatre is a great way to build your resume.

In regards to the atmosphere of Chicago link, I'm sorry but something about it doesn't look right to me. They may be legit, but they do not have a real address, their email is a free account from gmail... nothing looks real solid. I'd be very careful there. Maybe ask the film commission in your state if they've ever dealt with them?

      Good luck,
      Marianne

  44. QUESTION:
How can you get started as a script wrighter?
For as long as I can remember, I had always enjoyed coming up with story ideas, comedy, horror, romance, adventure, all kinds. So I figure the best thing to do is make a career out of it and become a writer for shows or movies, but I have no idea how to get started. Where do I begin and how can I get noticed?

    • ANSWER:
If you want to be a screenwriter, you've got to know how to write a screenplay - formatting and structure. It doesn't hurt to know that it's also "screenwriter" and not "script wrighter." Whatever a "wrighter" is.

Screenplays are written in a very specific format. The entire document is divided into scenes, and the scenes are structured to be a slug line (the heading of the scene telling you whether the scene is inside or outside, a location identifier, and what time of day it is that the scene is taking place), description (or action) and dialogue.

My first recommendation is to read screenplays. You can do this here:

      www.script-o-rama.com
      www.simplyscripts.com
      www.imsdb.com

You'll also need a good book on formatting. For that, I recommend the Screenwriters Bible by David Trottier. He explains all the terms and gives examples. It's a great book. You can pick it up cheapest on Amazon.com

You'll also need formatting software. There's the professional software packages: Movie Magic Screenwriter and Final Draft. MMS is the industry standard, and - of the two - I find that it's the easiest to use. There's also the free software. It's not a standard, but it's certainly the cheapest way to get going. The software package Celtx is probably the best out there. You can get it here:

      www.celtx.com

The next thing you'll need to know is how to structure a screenplay. While the story is always up to the writer, it's important to know that virtually every story is the Monomyth. If you include the plot points outlined in Hero With A thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, you'll be well on your way towards having a marketable screenplay. Joseph Campbell's book is a great reference, but really dry reading. For now, read (and understand) Vogler's breakdown, which was a memo written awhile ago. It's very concise and hits the high points you need to know to create a good story. You can read it here:

      http://www.skepticfiles.org/atheist2/hero.htm

A screenplay is between 90 and 120 pages for a movie. A TV show is 22 pages for 1/2 hour show or 46 pages for a 1 hr show. Every page of a screenplay equals 1 minute of screen time.

Once you've finished your screenplay, you'll need to protect it and find someone to sell it for you - an agent or a manager.

You register your work through the Writers Guild of America West:

      www.wgawregistry.org

And you get an agent or a manager by picking up a copy of the Hollywood Representation Directory and compiling a list of every agent or manager that represents writers in the genre you write in. Then you send them all query letters (you don't send your screenplays). Interview the ones that respond, and pick the one that you believe will work the best for you and be the best fit. Remember that the agent or manager you pick works for YOU, not the other way around. This person will then shop your work for you.

      NOTES:

      - You do NOT need to know the nuts and bolts of filmmaking to be a screenwriter, you need to know how to tell a good story.

      - You do NOT provide locations, you provide descriptions of locations.

      - You NEVER EVER *EVER* provide camera positions or camera direction. You're the writer, not the director. NEVER EVER tell the director how to direct. You just write the story.

      - The producer isn't concerned with anything other than costs and profit potential.

      - The director is only concerned with story.

      - Writers don't need film school. They need ideas, creativity, a thick skin and patience.

What is the first step to becoming an actress?
There are a lot of things that seem to be the "first step" to becoming an actress. But lots of people say that the first step is to get an agent. My parents aren't totally fond of me trying to get into the movie industry so their not going to pay for an agent, I was wondering if it was allowed in acting for the actress to be her own agent. I'm 13 btw. I've had some experience in this pizza commerical, but other than that i'm pretty much a begginer. What do producers look for in a actress?

I have been looking for movies on my iphone for a very long time but cant find anything that really works. is way to much to pay cuz i watch a lot of movies, so what are some websites I can get iphone moviies for cheap?

    • ANSWER:
      stream directly from ipocketTv
think you have to jailbreack it and download it from cydia..
if you love free movies that much ...
or just go to piratebay.org and download movies already in iphone format :)

if you got some spare time, and you can persuade 20 of your mates to help you out. there is a way to get one for very little... there is a loophole on http://gadgets.freebiejeebies.co.uk/131769 .. you have to sign up with them complete an offer and get 20 of your mates to do the same..
the cheapest offer there is is with love film for £3.99 a month 2 week free trial and you can cancel after the 1st month. (it still counts as a completed offer)and you still benefit from free dvd rentals :)
even if you were to pay your 20 mates to sign up for a month you would spend less than £80..and you would get your self an iphone 3gs 32g :)

  48. QUESTION:
How can I audition for an extra in movies?
I don't have any acting experience, and I can't join the community theater. But I am a tall, blonde, fit female (though I doubt look matters that much in acting). I have been dreaming about becomeing an actress for a while. Often I improv with my friends and can pretty much act well. I was hoping to build my acting resume by being an extra in a few movies. How can I do this???

    • ANSWER:
You can do extra work by joining Central Casting. They handle 90% of the extra out there for major films/tv shows. http://centralcasting.org

Also, you CANNOT put extra work on your ACTING resume. It's NOT acting!

What if you actually met with the casting director for Hannah Montana, Howard Meltzer, and he sees that you have Hannah Montana on your resume? The conversation would go like this:

Howard Meltzer, Casting director: Have we met?

You: No, I don't think so.

Casting director: How is that possible? It says that you worked on Hannah Montana.

You: Ummm... I was actually just an extra...

      Casting director: GOOD BYE!

This DOES happen with a lot of actors trying to make their resume look good.

Here are the pros and cons of being an extra:
      Pros:
-One way of becoming SAG Eligible
      -Networking
-Good way to learn set etiquette and how everything works.
      -Better than waiting tables
-If you're SAG, it can help you earn enough to qualify for the health insurance benefits.
      -free good food

      Cons:
-CAN'T put it on an ACTING resume
-Extra work leads to more extra work, so DON'T expect to be "discovered!"
-High Opportunity Costs- The time that you're stuck on set could have been used towards training, working out, or doing whatever to seriously advance your acting career. Also, what if you get a call for a SAG National Commercial that could pay k and residuals? You can't take it because you're "stuck on set making a little over minimum wage."
      -Low pay
-Sometimes shady people. There's a big joke that Central Casting hands out their cards at the exit gates of prisons. Hey, it's a good job for ex-cons. NO background checks and it pays better than McDonald's!
-Sometimes negative people ie. bitter actors who are doing everything wrong and are complaining about not being successful. These are the WRONG people to hang out with.
-Get treated like a second class citizen.

      VLC Best option.

Rename the sub file same as the video file VLC will load the sub automatically. More than one sub? no problem. Go to Video tab, then select subtitle track and then select one from the many. simple.

Sub file does not have thew same name as the video? Then just drag & drop the sub file on the VLC window while playing the video.

But first of all u have to get VLC. It's free. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
