Free Films To Download Legally

Frequently Asked Questions

1. QUESTION:
Can you suggest the best way to use limewire?
I want to download free films and music but want only those which the artists allow to download.
Can it be used legally?

• ANSWER:
Agreed, Limewire is full of viruses, and since the uploader can change the file name easily, you never really know what you are getting unless you preview the filed during download.

Rather try using a torrent client of sorts eg BitComet, and get your files from a torrent site. Most torrent sites allow for comments to be posted on all files and follow strict rules regarding content.

Hope this helps.

2. QUESTION:
Which is a good site for downloading free educational films/documentaries about wildlife?
Especially about elephants and African wildlife. I need them for class and my family enjoys them too, I need to be able to burn them onto a DVD. And I only want to do it legally, not violate any copyright laws. I may get some videos about animal slaughter and vegetarianism too at these sites as well, if they are available.

• ANSWER:
teachertube.com

3. QUESTION:
What do you use to legally download music?
I'm talking about a good youtube video converter, or a good program that records the external audio output of your computer. I used to use Freecorder, but now they're all spammy. Any ideas?

And before people get all butthurt about legality, downloading music this way isn't illegal unless you distribute it in any way.

• ANSWER:
You CAN legally download musical tracks and films of independent artists. The whole idea stands behind Open Content License.

www.jamendo.com/en (+radio broadcast)

vodo.net/

www.youtube-mp3.org/ (stands for itself)

audacity.sourceforge.net/ (free, open-source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds)

www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html (free and open-source cross-platform multimedia player)

Hey........, no points for you...

4. QUESTION:
What are some good foreign animated films?
What are some good animated films that were made outside of the USA? I am wanting to watch them dubbed in English; even if it's anime.

I relish watching Disney movies, for example, dubbed in foreign languages. I want to experience what it's like to see a film translated and slightly altered for a foreign audience. Especially if there is music involved.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Best answer will go to the person whose recommendations are most helpful.

• ANSWER:
Triplets of Belleville (not much dialogue though)
Persepolis
Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis
Akira
Grave of the Fireflies

There is also an American movie called Sita Sings the Blues. It's an American perspective of an Indian tale--it kind of fits your theme. You can legally download it for free (or you can donate, if you wish).

5. QUESTION:
Where can I find FREE piano sheets or tabs for Ecstasy of Gold?
I want the more preferred tabs or sheet music for Ecstasy of Gold without having to download any sketchy. Basically if i have to download something i dont want to have to download a program to go along with it.

P.S Ecstasy of Gold is the song in The Good, Bad, and Ugly. It's also the intro song for Jackass 2 and alot of Metallica's intro when there playing live.

• ANSWER:
Nowhere.

Ennio Morricone, the film's composer, is still alive, and as such no music of his is legally available for free.

6. QUESTION:
What are some of your favorite horror/slasher films?
I love horror and slasher films - even the silly ones and remakes. I'm always looking for new ones to see - both good ones and campy/silly ones.

What are some you've seen that you would recommend?

• ANSWER:
All 3 Evil Dead films (more the first two though)
- If you liked them, Bubba Ho-Tep and maybe My Name is Bruce
All 3 Re-animator films
Braindead (called Dead Alive if you're in the US)
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original)
Hellraiser 1 and 2
Pet Sematary
Audition
Black Christmas (original)

Some of them are a bit silly, but for more silliness, try Troll 2 or Satan's Little Helper.

And if you're into older ones, you could try The House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price. It's public domain now, so can be watched online or downloaded for free legally here: http://www.archive.org/details/The_House_On_Haunted_Hill

7. QUESTION:
Can i purchase films for the ipod video?
I want to put proper films for example star wars. I don't know how to because i have gone to the apple store and cannot find anything. All i can see is music videos or pixar short videos...I have tried them but they are not movies. I saw in the argos catalogue a Pirates of the Caribbean picture from the movie on the ipod but cannot see anywhere to download/buy it.

• ANSWER:
UK iTunes do not include movies for download yet. there are a couple of ways that you can legally put your films on your iPod.

if you have a DVD put it on you computer and convert it (there is software out there that is free, unfortuantley I don't know what it is) you must compress it as well.

you can also try www.lovefilm.com they are a DVD rental company but you can also purchase films to download. only problem is that they're no cheaper than going to HMV and buying the DVD, then again there are better deals at the DVD shops anyway. I have downloaded my DVD films onto mine.

8. QUESTION:
Does anyone know where I can pay to download Spanish language films legally from the UK?
I have been looking on itunes, but they don't have a very big selection. There are a few sites in the US, but they won't let you buy anything from the UK. I have tried doing a search in Spanish, but have not found anything yet! I just want to pay to watch or download the film on my laptop rather than have to buy a DVD every time! Thanks!!

• ANSWER:

And the dvd creator is avaliable here.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&newwindow=1&q=leawo+dvd+creator&aq=f&aqi=g2&oq= here are some steps:
1, open the program and put your DVD into ur computer, of course lol
2, click load DVD to find the DVD files.
3, setting. set something you can find on the program, like merge some clip into one, and which folder do you want to put the mp4 in
4, click start then wait till you got the mp4 files
5, you can drag and drop the mp4 file into the iTunes, then sync it into the iPod. Or you can copy your mp4 files into the video folder on your iPod too. i think this detailed guide may help you too.

9. QUESTION:
If I were to make an animated film using open source software, legally, what does that mean for me?
-If I created an animated film from scratch through the use of an open source software:
What does that mean for me in legal terms?
What license can I attribute to it?
Do I *have* to tell people what software I used?
Do I *have* to allow others free access via downloads to that information for any purpose?
Can I make money off of the film, legally?

Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

• ANSWER:
It depends on the particular open source license used - you need to read the exact terms of the license to be sure.

Generally speaking, most open source *software* licenses, do not claim any ownership or control over work ("output") produced using the program - unless the work incorporates elements of the program itself.

So for example, most open source licenses, will only place requirements on the output, if the output includes a listing of the program, or something like that.

10. QUESTION:
can anybody tell me what is the best web site to download movie or film?
I want to download movies but most of the site require me to pay. Is there any website that i no need to pay to download the movie?

• ANSWER:

Please.....if you can't illegally watch them, legally purchase them

11. QUESTION:
Can I use stock photos for a short film?
I'm planning to make a short film that needs some photos. Can I use those in sites like sxc.hu?

• ANSWER:
It depends on the license agreement for the stock photo website. Most are royalty free and would allow you to publish in a film.

Legally you cannot use a photo you find on the web with out the photographer's permission.

Stock photography websites contain thousands of existing photographs that can be licensed for specific uses. A customer who uses stock photography instead of hiring a photographer can save time, effort and money. Typically publishers can either purchase exclusive rights to a single image or they can purchase a subscription of sorts. The subscriptions allow publishers to download a limited number of photos over a specified period of time.

Stock photo websites allow webmasters, marketers and publishers to locate pictures for their marketing and promotional materials without the hassle of organizing a photo shoot. With copyright laws businesses must be very careful in using unlicensed photos.

There are also risks to using "free" photographs. Many of the free websites contain collaborative works from multiple photographers and artists. While the websites attempt to monitor the images in their collections in violation of copyright laws, there are no guarantees. If you opt to use photographs or images from a free portal, it is important to keep this in mind.

If you are looking for sources for stock photos with different and flexible license agreements give some of these a try.

My favorite stock photo website is http://www.photo-wizard.net

Here is where you can find some other inexpensive stock photo directories:

Another site list can be found here:

Living in OZ without a PC. Would like to be able to buy films and shows online and watch them LEGALLY! What is the best site in terms of price, selection and efficiency.

Thank you

13. QUESTION:
What Programme/website for downloading films?
What programmes or websites do people use to download free films? Can i just use Limewire or is it just for music files?

• ANSWER:
As 99% of current movies are copyright, that would be infringement, which is ILLEGAL

You can watch free movies online LEGALLY, at 'Blinkbox' or 'Moviesalot' to name but two

Search on Google for "free movies online" there are lots of sites

Don't use Limewire at all, EVER, is my advice, there are too many corrupt and virus ridden files.

14. QUESTION:
Is there a program similar to iMovie that is available to download online for free legally?
I need to make a movie for a project that incorporates clips, and I cannot get iMovie working.

• ANSWER:

http://free-download-films.com/

15. QUESTION:
Do you know of where I can download movies legally from the internet for free?

I would like to download gothika but other movies will do if I can't get hold of gothika.

• ANSWER:
This is the only place I know of that is legal and free to download from:

http://archive.org/details/feature_films

There are a few places you can go to stream movies free (and legally):

http://www.hulu.com
http://www.crackle.com

Youtube used to offer a large number of free (recent & old) movies, too, but they seem to try and hide them from people, even though they're legally available to watch so far as I can tell:

http://www.youtube.com/movies

I last watched a movie on Youtube about 3 months ago.

If you don't have a USA ip address - find a free VPN service, like VPNbook or there's others, to get a US IP to watch these shows. Maybe even a free proxy server would work like the one mentioned here:

http://premiumaccount.info/1401/free-proxy-tool/

I watch UK TV semi-frequently from the US, but I've never tried watching full movies from UK sites.

16. QUESTION:
Are there any websites where I can watch GOOD movies LEGALLY, WITHOUT DOWNLOADING and for FREE?
All the Blockbuster Video Stores are closing down and my mom won't give in to Netflix. I just checked out Flixster and saw maybe two good films, but the majority of the watchable ones on there are really crappy B-movies.

So can you suggest some reliable sites? And don't say Youtube.

• ANSWER:
i am using this site to watch movies and it is the legitimate out of all i have tried till now.

17. QUESTION:
Are there any sites that compete with itunes for legally downloading tv shows?
i'm not tech savy so the illegal sites are over my head. i've been putting off downloading itunes until absolutely necessary so i was wondering if there were other sites that competed in terms of price/quality/selection?

18. QUESTION:
How do you save a DVD to your lap top hard drive?
Want to put some films on to save taking originals with me on a trip. Thanks

• ANSWER:
You must use a program that will a) Strip the DMR/Copy Protection and b) Copy it or Reencode it to your hard drive. (I paid for mine but the Free Version is good, too, the Free Download is at the bottom of the page, above the Wallpapers.)

I use DVDFab HD Decrypter http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm but there are other free programs that do similar jobs.

As apposed to what almost everyone above has said, most Purchased DVD's have copy protection that won't allow you to just 'Copy' them. You must "Crack" them FIRST and then save them to your hard drive.

After you crack them, you can do different things with the cracked DVD Files.

1. Save them as an ISO, a FULL copy of the DVD, that will take up about 7GB of space on your hard drive.
2. Encode the WHOLE THING to a different format, like .avi, .mkv, .mp4, etc.
3. Encode just what you want into different formats, which allows you to fit the most content onto a single drive.

You can learn how to do this on sites like Video Help http://www.videohelp.com or After Dawn http://www.afterdawn.com

If it is LEGAL to back up your content is a subject that is in dispute and it depends upon your view of things.

Did you purchase a piece of plastic that happens to contain copyrighted content or did you purchase a single use license to copyrighted content that happens to be contained on a disk?

As it stands, it is currently legal to make a single user backup copy of your Legally Purchased content. It is in dispute if it is legal to break DMR and for things like eBooks, it is not legal to strip the copyright protection from even legally purchased files.

Before I got DVD Fab, I used DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink to take a double layer, retail DVD and back it up to a single layer, 4.7gb DVD+R disk or file folder.

After that, you can use a number of programs to convert the files to digital format.

The "Average" size of a converted, standard length film is between 700mb to 1300mb and in that size, you can fit almost 1800 films onto a 2tb hard drive.

19. QUESTION:
Where can I find english or american movies with subtitles in english too?
I'm Italian and I'd like to improve my english, so I thought to watch films in english with subtitles in english too, can you recommend me a website with this kind of movies which I'm looking for? thanks

• ANSWER:
I'm not sure about streaming movies with subtitles, unless you can find a website that is for deaf people or the hard of hearing.
If you can legally download a movie it is fairly easy to find free subtitle files online, which you can then display while watching the movie in most computer video players.

Corrections to your English (your English is pretty good already so I hope you don't mind). I would rephrase it this way:

I'm Italian, and I'd like to improve my English, so I thought of watching films in English with subtitles in English too. Can you recommend a website to me which has the kind of movies I'm looking for? Thanks

20. QUESTION:
What are the advantages of a mac over a pc? Are they worth the difference in price?
Am i going to be disappointed with a 13" macbook, if my home pc monitor is 20"?

• ANSWER:
The only advantage (and not much of one, read below and look at the links) of the Mac is being able to run OS X LEGALLY (PCs for the most part can do it illegally).. I would avoid the mac.

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech

4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to 0 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

21. QUESTION:
How many books are there in the John Carter Series?
I've recently discovered the film adaptation of the John carter of mars books and after enjoying the film decided I wanted to give reading the books a go, I really got into the books but I'm finding it hard to figure out what to read!

I downloaded "Barsoom: John carter 1-7" on the ibook app for my ipad which as the name suggests contains the first 7 books. how many books are there in total and if possible could I get a list of the books and their titles in chronological order?

Thanks for the help!

• ANSWER:
There are eleven books in the Barsoom series (John Carter) written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The eleventh book is a novella collection containing two stories.

1. Princess of Mars
2. The Gods of Mars
3. The Warlords of Mars
4. Thuvia, Maid of Mars
5. The Chessmen of Mars
6. The Mastermind of Mars
7. A Fighting Man of Mars
8. Swords of Mars
9. Synthetic Men of Mars
10. Llana of Gathol
11. John Carter of Mars - containing 'John Carter and the Giant of Mars' (John Coleman Burroughs) and 'Skeleton Men of Jupiter'

It's worth noting that at least the first title, 'Princess of Mars', is out of copyright and therefore you can get it legally for free.

22. QUESTION:
What is the best choice for a laptop?
I'm getting ready to start my freshmen year of college and need to decide between a PC or a Mac. All of my friends own PCs so they're pretty biased. Are there any Mac users that can tell me the pros and cons of having a mac?

• ANSWER:
PC would be the better choice..
The only Pro for the Mac: LEGALLY run OSX (PCs can do it illegally) [links provided to back up facts]

23. QUESTION:
Can i download foreign movies for free?
so i heard that there is no international copyright. so if a movie was never released in america, it has no american copyright. Right? If this is true, does this mean that anyone could legally download the films as long as they were never released in america? i know that Pirating is for copyrighted works, but if they are foreign do they still apply to our laws? i tried to look this up but could not find anything.
and your source? i was hoping to get some proof.

• ANSWER:
Although there is no "international copyright", under the Bern Convention, anything copyrighted (i.e., created or published) in one county is required to be treated as copyrighted in any other country that is under the Convention (i.e., in the "Berne Union"). In other words, you can certainly be sued in the USA for infringing copyright of a foreign work copyrighted in some other Berne Union country, and vice versa.

Also, for compliance with the Uruguay Round of Agreements, the USA modified the US laws in 1994 to actually "restored" US copyright for "foreign works" that had been published in the USA prior to 1978 without the necessary "formalities" (i.e., copyright notice and US renewal filings), provided they were still copyrighted in their "country of origin", thus giving "better" copyright protection to foreign works than to US works published in the same period. 17 USC § 104A.

24. QUESTION:
Name The movies Which are free to download on the internet?
Name all the movies you can that has no copyright restrictions to be downloaded.

Any Old movies is ok too. Only Legal Movies that are free to download.

please DO NOT PUT ILLEGAL STUFF. I DONT DO ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS AT ALL. ONLY LEGAL.

• ANSWER:
Many old films are in the public domain and can be downloaded from www.archive.org. If you google "public domain movies" I'm sure you could find some other sites, too.

There are films available for free streaming legally at www.hulu.com, but most other "streaming" sites are illegal.

Edit: "John Crisp, TOP CONTRIBUTOR" is wrong and clearly inexperienced in the realm of copyright. Movies released after a certain amount of time enter the public domain and can be downloaded legally. For example, Night of the Living Dead is in the public domain and can be watched and downloaded legally.

25. QUESTION:
i got a zune and want to put video on it but have no money and no dvd on my computer. any sugestions?
I bought a zune recently and want to put some movies on it. I have no money to buy any online, no dvd player on my computer, and basicly need someone to tell me the best site or free program to download from.

• ANSWER:
Commercial films (i.e., those with copyrights) are, obviously, not available online (legally). However, there are plenty of sites with public domain movies. Do a Google search for "public domain movies." You'll find many.

26. QUESTION:
How can I watch movies when they come out in the theaters at home. legally.?
A while ago I was watching MTV cribs, this person had a home theater and he was able to watch movies the same day that they came out in the theater at his home.I think he was paying a monthly fee. It wasn't apple tv or anything like that. I've tried watching movies on those free wed sites, the quality is really poor and they are not legal. I been trying to find something like that on the web for days ,but I haven luck. Does any body knows where to I can find something like this? thanks.

• ANSWER:
There are no such offering of a monthly charge to see current movie theatre features, even on a professional level from major studios. What that person is viewing is illegal downloads of streaming movies which are often of poor quality since the original master is an in theatre pirated video which has been uploaded onto an off-U.S. shore file sharing server.

No matter what the quality of the film that is streamed, these pirated operations are totally illegal and are subject to severe civil and criminal penalties once they are found and prosecuted.

27. QUESTION:
Where can I find free background music for video/film projects?
All I want is to find free instrumental stuff (classical, electronic, hard rock, soft sounds, sound effects) underneath clips I'm putting together to upload onto YouTube. Don't want to "steal" anyone's stuff without permission...just want easy-to-find public domain material or creative commons stuff without running around all over the place. Would like to find sites where you can listen first without downloading. Thanks in advance.

• ANSWER:
Nothing really polishes a podcast or video more than background music or theme music. In the music world, these music segments are referred to as intros and extros. While many enjoy streaming Internet Audio and recording songs they like over the Internet, these songs cannot legally be used in a podcast.

Podsafe music refers to music specifically for podcasters or video publishers. The music is licensed in such a way that podcasters can purchase a license to include the music in a podcast without incurring additional fees or expenses. In order to use traditional music that is heard on the radio in a podcast, podcasters may have to pay royalties for each time the song is played. Some music files licensed under public domain or creative commons are exempt from royalties and these songs are available for use in a podcast, but generally when searching for music to include in a podcast it is probably best to stick with music that is specifically designated as "podsafe".

How and Where to Locate PodSafe Music - http://www.feedforall.com/how-to-locate-podsafe-music.htm

28. QUESTION:
how do i start downloading music on ipoddownloadspro.com?
i dont see any links or anything and i just payed for my account and downloaded all the software.

• ANSWER:
you've more than likely just been scammed into paying for software that is available for free (presumably limewire/frostwire/a bittorrent client), but it is still illegal to use that software (whatever it is) for downloading copyrighted content/music/films:
What is inside the member’s area?
You will find all of the latest tools for accessing the largest file networks on the planet. Members have access to the necessary tools to search and download all kinds of files for your iPod or computer.
by all means contact them about the 'satisfaction guarantee':
http://ipoddownloadspro.com/contact.asp

but i can tell you that they aren't providing anything more legal than any piece of filesharing software out there and mcafee's site advisor doesn't have good things to say:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/ipoddownloadspro.com

legitimate, legal, trustworthy sites do NOT operate on a one-time-fee-download-as-much-as-you-want basis because they would not be making enough to pay the artists and movie companies the royalties they're legally entitled to.

29. QUESTION:
What is your motivation for illegally downloading a movie online?
This question is genuine and is not trying to pass judgment. It's simply to answer a question that has been bothering me for some time.

I am in my mid 20's and I have never watched a film online. I wouldn't even know how to go about doing it. I guess I'm wondering if all this online piracy is because people don't want have to go to their car drive to a Blockbuster and rent the film? Is it because people don't have the money to pay for a rental? Is it because the concept of ethical behavior has been so watered down, that people no longer consider it stealing?

So, if you do download them or stream them, or whatever, why exactly do you do it?

And if you don't do it, why have you refrained from partaking in the wave of illegal movie downloading?

• ANSWER:
...being the passionate movie lover that I am, the only true place to see films, is on the motion picture screen...bigger than life; in that cathedral, the film being featured has my complete 100% attention, and most worth of my time, attention and investment.

I DO watch film on video at home, of course, having an estimated film collection of something in the arena of 13,000 titles...70 to 75 percent of which are original, personally purchased treasures; to me, collecting films is not unlike collecting art.....it's just worth more to me, at least personally; in this way, I have further invested myself into the film, and afforded any respect and appreciation deserved of the film.

Candidly, I HAVE 'duped' or acquired copies of a great number of films in my collection, but this is specifically because they have long not been officially released, and yet have still been made available through various covert venues. If I was savvy to the concept of downloading films, it would be for that very reason, and that very reason alone why I would do it.....that someone online has the film I would be looking for, which hasn't been officially or legally released. Bear in mind, I'm talking about rarities and classics, which might be on just about every interested film collector's want list, and have been long sought after.....not just so I can have a scot-free copy of "Spider-Man 3", months before it's official video release.

...again, it stems right back to the attention, respect and appreciation deserved of the film.

Point in case, one of the films, which has been on my want list for years, is the sci-fi chiller from 1974, "Chosen Survivors"; I remember seeing the film at the drive-in theatre, a long way back, and when video became a collectable venue, I knew that one day, I would have to have the film in my collection. About three years ago, I happened upon a collector connection in Europe, who had the film dubbed in Swedish, but had English subtitles; it was a third or fourth generation copy, and barely watchable, but damned if I didn't have the film in my collection, finally....a sense of personal accomplishment. The good thing about this particular film, as with just about every film eventually, is that in October, Fox Video is finally releasing the film commercially. Like a collector of fine art, devotedly seeking out a true blue collectable, and temporarily settling for an acceptable substitute, we're talking satisfaction finally sated...barring more than a little patience.

It's also a matter of respect and appreciation for the film maker, the film making process, and the hundreds and hundreds of people responsible for putting out the product, irregardless of how good or bad the film is; knowing the overall process of producing a film, and the hard work expounded, as a result of the production of that film, I would be most hard-pressed in finding satisfaction in downloading or copying a film, which is know to be, or is readily anticipated to be available.

30. QUESTION:
Where can I watch "How To Be" online?
Does anyone know where I can watch "How To Be"? It's a UK indie film staring Robert Pattinson and I really want to see it. Any thoughts?

• ANSWER:
i got lucky and found a link for the movie and you can download it for free from this file sharing site:

http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=3fk9l21ywrf

someone recorded the movie off that IFC channel. quality is pretty decent.

-its about 700MB mp4
-its a zip file so you'll need to unzip it using win rar or something similar
-ignore the "_macrosx folder" and just click on the main mp4 file "how to be"

i totally recommend it if you cant wait for the dvd
i live in australia so i probably wont be able to see it (legally) for ages!

(by the way, it takes about 15 secs for the movie to get started, and the annoying recording timing thingy on the screen at the start goes away after the opening credits)

31. QUESTION:
What Filming Software Should I Download For PC Gaming?
Hi,
I would like to record me gaming on my laptop so i can post the videos on YouTube, but I don't know what software I should download. I have a built in webcam with a built in mic on my laptop. For my gaming, I want to be able to record what's happening on the screen, the sounds from the computer (<-- this one i can do without) my face, and my voice. I've looked at CamStudio, but I don't know if it meets those requirments. Could someone please either confirm it does, or recommend another software that does all of these things? (Preferably a LEGALLY free download)

i don't want to download any films just watch them, so if anyone knows any good sites please tell me

• ANSWER:

34. QUESTION:
Downloading movies for free and legally?
I was wondering if there are web sites where you can download movies for free without breaking the law?

Would using web site like this one be considered breaking a law? - http://stagevu.com. They do have disclaimer saying that if content posted for download illegally, they would remove it, but I still would like to check with someone.

• ANSWER:
There are legitimate free downloads. Usually it is either stuff that is in public domain like archive.org or making money from advertising like hulu.com.

Thank you very VERY much for respecting the life and livelihoods of artists that work in the film industry.

35. QUESTION:
what are the good sites to use when downloading films legally and free?

• ANSWER:
Don't think its possible for there to be such a site that you can get the films 'free' from legally, any that say free normally are referring to there being no download charge but these sites require a paid membership.

36. QUESTION:
Can I get/buy the DVD of any movie before it has released ?
I don't think I can even download any movie (Hollywood or Bollywood) before the movie has released !

• ANSWER:
No. At least not legally.

Most movies have a specific schedule. They start out in movie theatres, then come out on DVD, then come out on pay TV, and finally wind up on free TV.

The studios don't want to change it, because they're afraid that if people could get the DVD early, they might not bother to go to a theatre to see the film. And Hollywood makes billions from ticket sales to movie theatres.

37. QUESTION:
Where can I watch free movies on iPad ?
Other than YouTube where else can I watch?

• ANSWER:
Sandra, in answer to your question "Where can I watch free movies on iPad", I have 3 recommendations for you.

DOWNLOAD FROM THE INTERNET MOVIE ARCHIVE

1) You can download free movies for your iPad from the International Internet Movie Archive at archive.org. These are movies which have fallen into the public domain because their copyrights have lapsed.

Now, true, there are a lot of mediocre films here, but if you sift through them, you can find some real gems among the some odd 500,000 movies they have.

And they're all available in mp4 format, which is what your iPad likes to play. The file sizes of the mp4s are relatively small, too, which is good for the limited space of your iPad.

But the quality of these downloads are not like DVD quality, so that's an issue.

To download these direct to your iPad, may I suggest the free version of the Download Manager Pro (LITE) app.

WATCH FREE MOVIES ON THE IPAD FROM iTUNES U

2) Another little-known place to download free movies for the iPad is iTunes U.

Go into iTunes and on the top menu bar, click iTunes U. Then search for free movie collections.

Now, the free movies you find here are not Hollywood movies or theatrical features. These are smaller movies that never got distributed, but you can still find some good films here.

DOWNLOAD UNLIMITED MOVES FROM A MOVIES CLUB

3) This is not an entirely free option, because you have to pay a membership fee, but you can join a "movies club" where you don't have to pay monthly fees or per-movie charges.

Out of their licensed movie library, you can download unlimited movies and watch as many and as much as you want. These are Hollywood movies in DVD quality that are entirely legal to watch.

Just be sure to go with a movie club that provides its movies in mp4 format so that you know it will play on your iPad. The best kind of movie club to go with is one that will let you download or stream the movies, let you play them on all your devices (iPad, computer, TV), and that will allow you to burn them to DVD, too.

Again, the downside is that its not an entirely free option, since there's a one-time membership fee, but you're getting unlimited movies legally without having to pay for each movie.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD MOVIES FROM ILLEGAL MOVIE SHARING SITES

Finally, Sandra, I would not recommend downloading from one of these illegal movie sharing sites. The government is really cracking down on these and shutting them down right and left.

Plus, most of the movie files on these sites won't even play on your iPad. You would have to download the movie and then convert it with conversion software. That takes a lot of time and extra disc space, and you wouldn't be able to download them directly to your iPad and play them.

38. QUESTION:
Is downloading films off the internet a sin for a christian?

• ANSWER:
Gee Nathan,

Do you really have to ask this question?

If you download a pirated version of a DVD or anything like that that is not legally down-loadable for free then you are breaking the law and that is stealing.

People spend many months and millions of dollars making movies and you are stealing from them and the producers of the movie - it is not good enough to say that they are making millions .... it is still stealing and that is WRONG - whether you are a christian or not.

regards Mike D

PS I just read Steve Watkins comments - I am appalled by his attempt to justify stealing and then to blame God by saying if he gives you the opportunity then you can use it - a little stealing is still stealing - go ask you Priest/Minister or Pastor what he thinks - I am staggered by Steve's comments - I wonder if he downloads pirated versions too?

40. QUESTION:
Downloading The Nightmare Before Christmas DVD?
I want to download The Nightmare Before Christmas on DVD but cant seem to find out how...could someone send me a link and how to do it?I have a windows xp and it does have a burner on it.

• ANSWER:
You can't download a DVD! If you mean you want to download the movie and not have a DVD you can buy or rent here:
http://www.amazon.com/Tim-Burtons-Nightmare-Before-Christmas/dp/B003SI9WYG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330296365&sr=8-1
If you mean you want a DVD you can buy it here:
http://www.amazon.com/Nightmare-Before-Christmas-William-Hickey/dp/B00447L4JG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1330296365&sr=8-2

Don't think "Oh, downloading it for free won't hurt." Yes, yes it will. Think "hey, they're rich and it's not a real job so who cares?" The movie is 75 minutes long. At peak production of TNBC, one week of work yielded 60 seconds film. Don't be a jackass and criminal (yes, it is a crime) just because you don't want to pay the 2 bucks to get it legally.

41. QUESTION:
Where can I find full footage of game film (NBA, NFL, etc.) availble for download?
I'd like to download tapes of full games for both NFL & NBA. I don't think YouTube allows you to download the video.

• ANSWER:
Most professional organizations (if not all) do not legally allow you to download their footage for free due to copyright issues.

42. QUESTION:
does anyone know where I can download previous episodes of TV shows?
...like Life on Mars or the first season of desperate housewifes? Ive tried Limewire(does not have UK tv shows or only has the current season of US tv shows, bittorrent(cant work out how to use it!) and youtube (only has clips not the full episodes).
Thanks
PS the downloads should also be free!

• ANSWER:
Life on Mars is a great show..... I can't wait for the second series to start next Tuesday.

The BBC haven't launched iPlayer yet, but when they do (in May hopefully) you should be able to download BBC programmes like Life on Mars for free and legally. At the moment there is also Channel 4's 4OD (4 on demand) some shows are free and others you will have to pay for... So I'm guessing you'll be able to get the latest episodes of Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty there.

Illegal downloads of these copyrighted shows would be from torrents.... Have a look at torrentspy, isohunt, piratebay
There's a few programmes which will help you download these once you've found the torrent, try utorrent, bitcomet, bittorrent.... Actually some films are currently trialing a legal download via Bittorrent or so I have just found out from wikipedia...

But for legal free downloads they'll be the BBC's iPlayer (out in May) and Channel 4's 4 On Demand for those two specific programmes you're looking for....

43. QUESTION:
Where can I find a download for "Eet" by Regina Spektor?

It's so amazing, it's like she raided my head and put my personality into a short film.

44. QUESTION:
Where can I download free films?
How long does it take and what is the quality like ?

• ANSWER:
Someone else mentioned bittorrent: my favourite site for Bittorrent files is ISO Hunt, which connects hundreds of thousands of files being shared. However ,there may be copyright, ie legal issues with this, and so I am not suggesting you engage in any illegal filesharing! You can download a backup of nything you already legaly own, and that is all I suggest!

You can also try Atom Films, which is tons of short amateur work, and I've always found very funny stuff on there, tho' truthfully I've never tried ownloading from there since its there all the time.

There are a couple other web sites and I'm sorry I don't recall the names, but they do offer legally downloadable old movies and TV [out of copyright], if you're into classic stuff.

45. QUESTION:
Sites for free music to use in a video (background)?
Do you guys know of any sites where I could download free music (legally), to use as a background track for a short film for school. It's for a course, and I would be presenting it. Also, the videos might be saved to the school's site or some other database. Any possible sites where this would be possible?
I'm talking about the kind of music that has the kind of licence that it can be used in my purposes.

I'm thinking of basic normal guitar/other instrumental tracks. Thanks for any help.

• ANSWER:

46. QUESTION:
Is downloading music from LimeWire legal?
I know this question has been asked a million times but I want to ask for myself. I just want to download songs, real songs that you can buy but are free on the program, for my OWN personal use. I do not use it to sell music.

• ANSWER:
No, downloading songs that cost money on other sites for free through LimeWire is illegal. It is the equivalent of stealing a product from someone trying to make their living by producing that song.

Imagine if you had put alot of effort into finishing a school project. You're really glad at how it turned out. You get to school, and it ends up that someone who just downloaded a very similar project gets a better grade. Wouldn't you be pissed off?

So no, LimeWire music is not legal. Completely illegal.

As an added note, even if you have legally purchased the song on iTunes or a CD with said song, downloading an "archival" copy off the internet as a backup is technically illegal too. This goes for all media content, including songs, films, and video game ROMs.

47. QUESTION:
Is there any point downloading Frostwire?
Just wondering, since Limewire is being sued and shutdown, will the same thing happen to Frostwire soon? Is this like a big "crackdown" on all these music sharing sites or is this a rare one off?
Also, will I personally get into trouble for using these sites?

• ANSWER:
bill m - how do you work that one out ?

frostwire is open source, which means that anyone can change the code,
frostwire is released under gpl, general public licence - so its free to use, modify, break, whatever you or i want to do with it,

if a killbit was added to frostwire - how would that work on linux ?
anyone is free to modify the code, so you just delete or modify the file holding the killbit code

frostwire is a fork of limewire - but its a different program,

frostwire (and limewire) do not connect to sites, they connect to the gnutella network - its a separate part of the whole internet,
it's not a one off - its happened before and it will happen again,

its not illegal to use file sharing programs, most linux operating systems are recommended to be distributed this way, personal, home-made music and films can be legally distributed this way, free, open source programs can be distributed this way

its copyrighted music and films thats illegal - people get caught and heavily fined,
you may think there is not much chance it will be you - but i bet the people who have been caught thought the same thing,

one interesting thing is, if you download from sites then they have your ip address - they have to have it, or where do they send the file ?
a letter can only get where it needs to be with an address,

limewire must hold your address - its just a matter of time
(if you believe that limewire is a site)

download illegal files and take your chance

48. QUESTION:
Can I use a music piece by Johann Sebastian Bach recorded in 1951 for my short film?
I was able to download some Bach for free since it's a public domain and the copyright of the recording from 1951 has expired. I was just wondering if I could also legally use it in a short film?
This is the recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSEA0q4IRYM

thanks

• ANSWER:
All recordings are still under copyright - period - unless there are special circumstances. If you use public domain music, and YOU play it - that is fine. If you use someone else' recoding - no. So - the composition is public domain, the recording is NOT - you cannot use the recording. How do you KNOW - or think you know - that the copyright from 1951 has expired? Have you researched this correctly - or are you just guessing, becasue you WANT this?

49. QUESTION:
Where can I legally pay for and download movies in Canada?
Every place that I have found that allows a person to pay nominal prices for and download movies is only available to Americans in the United States. Where can I download movies inexpensively and legally in Canada? Note that I already know about iTunes, but that is a bit on the expensive side.
By the way, I need them in HD.
CinemaNow is not an option for me.
Free things tend to be illegal.

Also, listen to this advice:
*** "If you go to a website that is offering downloads or streams of movies that are still playing in theaters common sense should tell you that these are unauthorized movies.".
*** "If you are watching unauthorized content it will only be a matter of time until your computer eventually gets a severe virus.".

Happy Watching!! :-)

Edit: LOL. Actually, I don't watch many movies, I just know where to FIND them.
I don't think that you can watch Inception legally right now. :-(
