  3. QUESTION:
How do i get reviews on ethel waters music-tropical heat wave?
Ethel water was a jazz singer in the early 1900s.

    • ANSWER:
      Review by Matthew G. Sherwin ( http://www.amazon.com/The-Incomparable-Ethel-Waters/dp/B0013AYXSQ ):

A heat wave blew right into town last week,
She came from the island of Martinique,
The can-can she dances will make you fry
The can-can is really the reason why

      We're having a heat wave,
      A tropical heat wave,
      The temperature's rising,
      It isn't surprising,
      She certainly can can-can.

      She started a heat wave
      By letting her seat wave
      In such a way that
      The customers say that
      She certainly can can-can.

      Gee, her anatomy
      Makes the mercury
      Jump to ninety-three.

      We're having a heat wave,
      A tropical heat wave,
      The way that she moves
      That thermometer proves
      That she certainly can can-can.

Ethel Waters sang with great passion and she captivated her audiences wherever she went. Ethel was truly the first African-American superstar: she excelled in song, stage and motion pictures. Ethel pursued the fine arts never afraid of the touchy issues of racism and heated romantic moments. We are so much better off because Ethel shared her talent with us; and this CD is an excellent selection of some of her finest songs.

Ethel was equally at home singing hot numbers about romance or belting out torch songs to describe the sadder feelings we all experience in love and life. The CD begins with the Irving Berlin classic "Heat Wave" recorded by Ethel in 1933 with Benny Goodman on trumpet. The musical arrangement is wonderful and Ethel's voice is rich, vibrant and full of energy. The CD takes a sharp 180 degree turn for the next track entitled "I Just Couldn't Make It, Baby." In this song Ethel expresses how she just can't forget a man for whom she has feelings. Ethel also performs "Stormy Weather" flawlessly with Tommy Dorsey on trombone and Jimmy Dorsey playing both clarinet and alto saxophone.

Other classic songs on this CD include "(What Did I Do To Be So) Black And Blue?" which deals with racial issues and the singer's need for black pride; "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone;" the very sassy "Maybe Not At All;" and the very romantic "Memories Of You."

Ethel wasn't shy about taking on her rivals, either. "Harlem On My Mind" gently pokes fun at Josephine's Baker's style; and the lyrics to "Come Up And See Me Sometime" even go so far as to call Mae West "an Eskimo." "Come Up And See Me Sometime" is perfectly arranged as well. Ethel sings this number with Tommy Dorsey on trombone and Jimmy Dorsey on both clarinet and alto saxophone.

Ethel's incredible entertainment continues. Ethel does a great rendition of "Cabin In The Sky" accompanied by Max Meth and his Orchestra. "Taking A Chance On Love" is absolutely beautiful; and the CD concludes with the playful and joyous "Honey In The Honeycomb." Excellent!

The liner notes feature great black and white photos of Ethel Waters both on stage and at MGM with Duke Ellington during the filming of Cabin In The Sky in 1943. Donald Bogle contributes a fascinating essay about the tough personal life Ethel Waters endured as she entertained millions of people in the public eye.

There will never be another Ethel Waters. When Ethel Waters sang you listened--and you listened closely, too, because she always gave 110% and she possessed an abundance of natural talent. Thank God for Ethel Waters--this lady graced us generously with her art!

  5. QUESTION:
What is the best vacation place and why?
I was wondering where the best place to go on vacation would be during the spring, summer, winter, or fall

    • ANSWER:
Montreal. Reason, there are festivals going on all the time. In the month of June, they have the Grand Prix race, the Fringe Festival, the Fete National [Quebec National holiday weekend], the International Fireworks Festival, and the beginning of the Montreal Jazz Festival. In July, the Jazz Festival concludes, and the Just for Laughs Festival begins; also in July, the Dragon Boat races, the Francofolies, Festival international de Lanaudière [classical music], the Film Festival, and the Diver Cité Festival.

In August, NASCAR Busch Series race, the Montreal Highland Games [Scottish], Italian Week, the Blues Festival, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu Hot Air Balloon Festival, Fête des enfants/Children’s Festival , and 18th-century public market. In September, Montreal Marathon and Festival de la santé. In October, the Pop Montreal [music] Festival, and the Festival du nouveau cinéma. In November, the Salon du Livre and Rencontres internationales du documentaire, In December, there is Christmas shopping and Christmas decorations.

In January, Fête des neiges [on weekends]. In February, Festival Voix des Amériques / Voices of the Americas festival, Festival Montréal en Lumière - High Lights Festival, the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois , and the Port Symphonies. In March, Festivalissimo Iberian-Latin American festival, the International Film Festival on Art, and the St. Patrick's Day Parade. In April, La Braderie de mode québécoise, Vues d’Afrique African and Creole film fest, and Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival. In May, Montreal Chamber Music Festival, Terres En Vue/Land InSights [first people’s festival -- Indians and Eskimos], Festival musique actuelle Victoriaville, Montreal Bike Fest (Féria du vélo), Mutek music, sound and new tech festival, and Le Mondial de la bière/Beer Festival.

Oh, yes, great golf, skiing in the winter time, and fishing and boating nearby.

If you like food, you have your choice of a world-class cuisine embodying multiple nationalities.

Montreal is a melting pot of nationalities, and each nationality has its own neighborhood. In fact, I am told that the bagels in Montreal are better than the bagels in New York City.

And finally, although Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, you will find it delightfully multi-lingual.

  6. QUESTION:
Can someone please give me a list of musicians of the Harlem Renaissance?
I already have a few like Louis Armstrong, Josephine Baker, Edward Kennedy Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker but I need more!

    • ANSWER:
One of the greatest musicians from the renaissance period was Duke Ellington, known as the Duke. The Duke was born in Washington, DC as Edward Kennedy Ellington on 29th April 1899. Thereafter, he moved to New York and started a band. During the Renaissance he appeared with his band at many theaters and nightclubs. He was blessed to appear in Carnegie Hall in 1943. Ellington produced such masterful songs as, Mood Indigo in 1931, Sophisticated Lady in 1933, Solitude in 1934 and others. The favorite theme for his band was Take the ‘A’ Train. His musical compositions and rhythms transcend the spectrum of classical music, jazz, choral music, gospel, spiritual, blues and dance.

Duke Ellington is considered one of the world’s greatest composers and musicians. He played over 20,000 performances worldwide in the course of his musical career, during which time he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom of the United States, and awarded the Legion of Honor from the French government (Ellington).

Louis Armstrong is considered to be one of the greatest jazz players of all times. Music and jazz were the love of his life. His ambition, demeanor, abilities, talents, and soul were all focused on the art of playing jazz. Armstrong surpassed all other jazz players of his time and still remained untouched. He was born in New Orleans on July 4, 1900. He had his first real horn, a coronet, at age seven. At a young age he demonstrated brilliance with the coronet and trumpet and played before large audiences in New Orleans, Chicago, and with bands on the Mississippi River. During 1925 he influenced the Harlem Renaissance and played with the Fletcher Henderson New York Band. In 1929, he returned to Harlem after a short absence and performed magnificently on Broadway in Connie’s Hot Chocolates and also made his first nationwide recordings. During 1932 he had several successful European tours and reached unprecedented heights with his music. His personality was advanced by radio, films, television and other appearances. Louis Armstrong is considered to be the true king of jazz and a legend of his time. He passes from labor to reward on July 6, 1971 (Louis Armstrong).

Bessie Smith, the greatest blues singer of all ages, was an integral part of the renaissance. She performed at the Cotton Club in Harlem and was called the “Empress of the Blues.” Her recordings over the period of 1923 to 1933 elevated her to one of the highest levels in jazz history. She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1894 and went from rags to riches. Her presence could be felt when she stepped on the stage and her six foot personality started to sing. She embarked upon her career by performing at the age of nine and often appeared with her brother, Andrew, who was a guitarist. She was mentored by Ma Rainey, who is considered to be the first woman to sing the Blues.

Bessie’s major contribution came in 1920 during the Harlem Renaissance with her recording Crazy Blues. Other smash hits of hers were, Downhearted Blues and Golf Coast Blues. These recordings helped save Columbia Records from bankruptcy because of their high record sales (Hemsworth). Bessie was considered one of the highest paid female African-American entertainers in the United States of America. Over the years she appeared at major concerts and recordings. Bessie was called from labor to reward in September 1937 as a result of an automobile accident in Mississippi. She will always be remembered as the “Empress of the Blues.”

There were other great African-American recording artists whose presence graced the Harlem Renaissance period. The fascinating music of Billie Holiday was marvelous to all Americans. Dizzy Gillespie also made significant contributions to the world of music. Charlie Richard “Bird” Parker, the great saxophonist, elevated the world of jazz music for others to follow, and Ella Fitzgerald gave her special touch to the renaissance. The contribution of these great artists not only established a pattern of great excellence for future African-American musicians to follow, but in essence, it established a legacy of triumphant greatness for the world to see and enjoy the spirited music having its roots in Mother Africa where it all began. Additionally, blues, jazz and other forms of music written, composed, cherished, and played by these great musicians can be traced to and linked with spiritual activities. As a result, music was an integral part of religion and remains so even to this day.

  7. QUESTION:
Is anyone going to see Avatar when it comes out?
I've never seen a movie with more hype and commercials. It looks like it would be a movie I would like, but I have no motivation to see it. I've asked almost everyone I know if they would go see it not one person has said yes yet.

    • ANSWER:
Ah, the short memory of the great, unwashed masses. Anyone remember "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within?" Anyone wanna tell me why that movie mattered? Not because it told a story worth telling (..can anyone tell me WTF the story actually was?). It was "purdy." Same deal with "Avatar." Any review that frames "Avatar" in a positive light begins by discussing its technical merits and then goes into apologizing for the blue, space hippie story. Never a good sign when reviewers defend bad film making... that's really not a critique; it's a pale attempt to hide your disappointment for being sucked in by hype. The last movies that ended my faith in the general public's ability to initially identify screen duds are the 2nd and 3rd Matrix flicks. In my opinion, they sucked while I was watching them in the theater (the chick had the corniest death scene I've ever seen... please, shut up and die; Agent Smith gets turned into a bitch) and they suck now. If you like 'em, that's great. I won't hold it against you, just as I respect my friends who continue to try to convince themselves that either film is worth sitting thru even once. That's why my wind is up regarding "Avatar."
However, I plan to see "Avatar." It looks wacky. I ain't expecting "The Godfather." Hell, I like a flashy, stupid, adventure flick. I'll make up my own mind on whether the story destroys "Avatar." Considering how many people were impressed by "Transformers 2," it obviously doesn't take much to impress American audiences. If "Avatar" turns out to be nothing more than a hot, but stupid date, I'm out a few buck and I'll at least be able to discuss the movie and be able to back up my critique. See it, or don't. It'll worm its way onto other media soon enuff. Just know what you're in for and remember that hype does not equate to quality.

  9. QUESTION:
Where can I find good erotic films, not un-classy porn, but foreign, independent or antique erotica?
In the US, movies seem to be bunched into family, action, or porn. Hard to find good erotic in a genuine film.

I don't want to wander in the adult sections of movie store. I'm looking for quality stuff, like in the documentary on IFC about sexuality...good stuff to watch for mature adults, with spouse...

Possibly a website, even a list of good erotic independent movies?

    Anyone know? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Some great stuff you should look into:

      Non-Porn:

      - "Shortbus", the acclaimed film from filmmaker John Cameron Mitchell (creator of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"), which includes non-simulated sex scenes, but less for shock value or eroticism, and rather as part of the unconventional bonding methodology he used to produce the film (the actors went in with no script and built it up from nothing). It's a smart film that has a lot to say, and will definitely probably intrigue you.

      - Although it isn't actually porn, I can't go without mentioning the Canadian television series "Bliss". It's not porn (everything is simulated, and there's only a little bit of nudity), but it's explicitly erotic, and actually has some really intriguing plot arcs for each episode. It's just beautiful, well-done stuff, and very erotic, very sexy. Buy it!

      http://www.amazon.com/Bliss-Complete-Wiebke-von-Carolsfeld/dp/B0009WIEN4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1221276100&sr=8-2

      - A list of various films you might want to check out (I find them all intellectually as well as erotically stimulating): The Dreamers, Secretary, The Night Porter, Last Tango In Paris, Red Shoe Diaries, The Lover, Wild Orchid, Lolita, 9 1/2 Weeks, Henry & June, Delta Of Venus, Sex, Lies, and Videotape, 9 Songs, Lie With Me, The Center Of The World, Two Moon Junction, Intimacy, and Eyes Wide Shut, to name a few.

Porn (but all independent and very different from any porn you've ever seen):

      - "Five Hot Stories For Her" was produced by an incredible Spanish woman named Erika Lust, who wanted to make high-quality porn for women. What she produced is a film made up of five separate "shorts" that are full, non-cheesy story arcs with gorgeous, realistic actors and actresses, and the sex is hot, real, and even has real female orgasms! Yay! Plus the music, sets, and cinematography are expensive and high-quality. You can watch a trailer here:

      http://www.lustfilms.com/blogEn/lust-films/

      - Petra Joy has also produced three very erotic films that are aimed towards women but are highly artistic and just have a lot more innovation and loving care than others you might see. You can watch previews for "Female Fantasies" and "Feeling It" here:

      http://www.femalefantasies.co.uk/trailer.asp

      http://www.feelingit.co.uk/trailer.asp

      - Blue Artichoke Films are producing some very interesting sexual films that are very artistic and very different from anything out there. Check them out:

      http://www.blueartichokefilms.com/projects/

      - Innocent Pictures have been making intriguing, plot-laden erotic films for a while, and they never fail to inspire and surprise me. You can find out about all their films and watch trailers from here:

      http://www.innocentpictures.com/forside.php

      - Roy Stuart isn't American, but his films are utterly amazing, and he has a ton of them. You have to special order them from him, but it's well worth it:

      http://www.thelostdoor.com/

      http://www.roystuart.net/page1.htm

      - You liked the documentary on IFC about sexuality? Then you're going to LOVE Tony Comstock's work! He produces documentary films with real-life couples being interviewed and filmed having an erotic encounter that becomes very meaningful since you have the background information and relationship established. Comstock Films has four films- one between two married porn stars, two other [non-pornstar] heterosexual couples, one gay male couple, and one lesbian couple. You can watch previews and read about them here:

      http://shop.comstockfilms.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=2&chapter=0

      - Bleu Productions and its owner, Maria Beatty, is amazing. With films that are moody, evocative, gorgeously filmed, and with such artistic and high production values, you won't find anything more erotic. She has a ton of films- some better than others- but I highly recommend "The Black Glove" and "Elegant Spanking". Check them out here:

      I hope these help! Enjoy!

  12. QUESTION:
I'm writing a novel set in 1940's and 1950's Hollywood. What would be some good books to read/movies to watch?
To get a picture of what hollywood was like during that period.

    • ANSWER:
I would love to suggest some films that you could check out to get a sense of Hollywood during that period. The two that come to mind right off are "Sunset Boulevard" which is set in Los Angeles and was made in 1950 and "Double Indemnity" which was made in 1944. Also "The Blue Dahlia," "The Bad and the Beautiful," and "The Big Sleep." More modern films that take place in 1940s/1950s Los Angeles are "L.A. Confidential," "Ed Wood," and "Hollywoodland." Also there is "The Black Dahlia" which I have never seen but it takes place during that time period as well.

Also, it may be worth it to check out some stock footage or video from Hollywood in the 1940s just to get an idea of the main hot spots of the time. The first part of this clip is fabulous up until 1:40. It shows street shots of some famous Hollywood sites. The second portion of the clip goes into something completely unrelated, however.

      http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/06/memory_trippin.php

      And another...

This website has little clips of stock footage featuring places such as Grauman's, the Brown Derby, etc.

      http://www.efootage.com/stock_footage/hollywood/1/

I always grew up picturing Hollywood during this time period as a result of the first two movies I mentioned as well as 1950s American television shows that would often do special episodes where the characters would visit Hollywood. The one I remember the most is the "I Love Lucy" episodes in Hollywood. I hope this helps!

  13. QUESTION:
What would it be like to serve as a UN soldier?
Would the rules of battlefield fighting be any different from serving in the US Armed Forces?
I heard about Michael New who'd rather be an American soldier than a UN soldier. And do UN soldiers wear blue camoflage combat uniforms?

    • ANSWER:
UN soldiers don't wear camo at all. They always wear the blue as far as I know, and they are totally useless. UN observers . . . they actually sit there and watch people kill one another like demented perverts watching a snuff film, "observe" it, then report to someone who puts another little hash mark next to his count of the dead.

In Bosnia, the UN soldiers traded humanitarian aid donations, which were supposed to be handed out to needy families for free . . . they traded these things for blowjobs. Imagine that, a woman comes to the UN soldiers, the people she should be able to count on in that desperate time, and he says, "suck me or your family starves." There has to be a specially hot place in hell . . .

I hate UN soldiers with a passion. Be an American soldier and let the bullies of the world fear you.

  14. QUESTION:
Can anyone give me info on music in america from 1910-1919?

  15. QUESTION:
What movie(s) would you personally consider "Classics" and/or "Must Sees"?
I'm not much of a movie buff, and I want to expand my movie-viewing repertoire (if I'm using that word correctly). I'd like to know what you would consider any of these three:
    1. Classics, whatever your definition may be,
    2. Revolutionary, for whatever reason, and
    3. Must-Sees, Maybe your favorite movie or whatnot.

Thanks to all who answer in advance. I don't think there will be a best answer; this is just a suggestion question.

  18. QUESTION:
What do i need to do to prepare for my birthday party in two weeks? The theme is 1950's?

    • ANSWER:

      http://www.partymerchant.com/fifties_party.htm

'50s Party Invitation to Happy Days:

      · Print new record labels containing the party particulars and place them on old 45s or fake records. Name the "record company" after your guest of honor or party hosts. These are invitations that are bound to go platinum.

      · Use a fabric paint pen to write the invitation on a bobby sock or stuff the paper invitation into a sock.

      · Use photo postcards of Elvis, James Dean, or Marilyn Monroe as your invitation stock.

      · Write your invitation on the back of a '50s party cardboard cutout.

      · Encourage all your cool cats to come dressed in '50s finery.

Set up a soda shop or dinner setting with small cafe tables (available at most rental stores).

      · Hang real or inflatable music instruments around the site.

      · Find old saddle shoes or sneakers (not modern-looking athletic shoes). You can even use white nurse's shoes and turn them into saddle-looking shoes with brown paint or by gluing pieces of brown felt onto the shoe. Hang from the ceiling.

      · To use sneakers, saddle shoes or any boot -style roller skate as a retro centerpiece, slip a water tumbler into a bobby sock, then fill the glass with straws and slip the sock into the shoe or skate.

      · Use James Dean, Elvis, Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe movie posters, life-size stand-ups and movie stills to adorn the walls next to posters of hot rods and oldies album covers.

      · Contact a local classic car club about displaying or renting one or more of their hot rods for your party site. You can also contact a local motorcycle club to see about displaying or renting "hogs" to rev up your party site.

      · If your budget allows, rent an old-fashioned jukebox. If not, use inflatable or cardboard versions for atmosphere.

      · Hang rock and roll themed signs, posters and cutouts that will turn any room into a soda shop.

      · Dig through your family attic, yard sales, thrift stores or flea markets to find a bunch of golden oldies .45s, LPs or old album covers to use to decorate your dancing den.

      · The quickest way to give any room a '50s feeling is to use rolls of patterned paper with a record, soda shop or typical checkerboard design or vinyl "sugar shack" or sock hop cutouts. Or add a rock and roll or fabulous fifties border. Best of all, by using sticky tack you can put up any of these designs without ruining your walls!

      · Light up your night with music note novelty lights.

      · Just in case your guests don't come dressed or if you don't want to make it a total costume party, have a couple of accessories on hand to help your guests become part of your décor. Choose items such as music note or black felt fedoras and Blues Brothers, Elvis or retro sunglasses. Or, buy in bulk and outfit the crowd with a complete rock and roll accessory kit.

Get everyone up to do the stroll, mashed potatoes Lindy, jive and other classic '50s party dances.

      · Resurrect your old turntable to spin the '50s top tunes. If you don't have a turntable, you can still find some classic oldies CDs.

      · Spin the Chubby Checker classic and have a Twist contest.

      · "Rate the Record" just like they did on American Bandstand. "I give it a 90. It had a good beat!"

      · See who can keep a hula-hoop moving the longest or spin the most hula-hoops at once.

      · Hold a "Spotlight Dance." You can accomplish this with a large flashlight, disco or utility light.

      · Rent or buy classic movies and TV shows from that era or films set in that period such as "Grease." You can find many classic sitcoms such as "Happy Days," "Father Knows Best," and "Laverne and Shirley" on the Nickelodeon channel and other cable stations.

      · Have an a capella "doo-wop" contest.

      · Put up a candy-filled, guitar piñata and let blind-folded guests take a crack at giving it a whack.

      · See who can do the best yo-yo tricks or keep it spinning the longest.

Black and white check or black, white and pink are perfect table toppers. If you choose to use a solid cloth, use black and white checked paper products as accents.

      · Soda shop staples included ice cream sodas, sundaes, malteds, milkshakes, pizza, burgers and fries. For added fun, you can serve hamburgers on reusable, plastic burger-design plates or pizza on pizza-shaped plates.

      · Serve your guests TV dinners on snack trays, especially if your main entertainment revolves around watching '50s videos or movies.

      · Here's another use for your old LPs. Cover with clear plastic wrap and use to serve hors d'oeuvres.

      · Old LPs can also make a charming dinner plate charger for sit-down celebrations.

      · Contact your Coca-Cola distributor to purchase classic Coke-filled glass bottles and serve with two straws. Many markets still sell those classic-shaped bottles along with their other soda selections.

      · Dress like a soda jerk or carhop (including the roller skates) to serve your guests.

      · Decorate a round cake with dyed-black icing to resemble a record and include the guest of honor's name on the "label." Or, just slip a disc whose label has been customized to the guest of honor on top of the cake. If you have a favorite record, many bakeries can duplicate it into an edible design that can be put on top of your cake.

      · Use rock and roll bandanas as napkins and Slinky-style rainbow coils as napkin rings.

'50s Favors and Prizes: (Click here)

      · The party "rock and rolls" on for guests who take home a CD or tape of '50s classic hits

      · Guys love playing "air guitars," so give them an inflatable version so they can rock around the clock.

      · Show them you think they're a "good skate" with a glowing skate necklace.

      · "Pin" them with a flashing LED guitar pin.

      · Treat them like a rock star with a LED guitar necklace, Blues Brothers or retro sunglasses or a rock and roll bandana.

      · Top off the celebration with music note fedoras or derbies.

  19. QUESTION:
What famous people come from Canada?
I need to know for a school project. I would like bands, singers, actors and anyone else that might appeal to the average american seventh grader!

    • ANSWER:
There are quite a number of Canadians in the entertainment industry, in fact most movies are filmed in Vancouver, Alberta or Toronto these days and much of popular American culture like Saturday Night Live is produced by Canadians like Lorne Michaels, or their music produced by David Foster. 20. QUESTION:
What is the Raggare subculture of Germany,Austria,Finland and Scandinavia?

it is NOT related to Rastas or Reggae
it is NOT related to Rastas or Reggae

    • ANSWER:
Raggare is a subculture found mostly in Sweden and parts of Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Austria. Raggare are related to the greaser subculture and are known for their love of hot rod cars and 1950s American pop culture.

While the raggare movement has its roots in late 1950s youth counterculture, today it is associated mainly with middle aged men who enjoy meeting and showing off their retro American cars. However, the subculture retains its rural and small town roots as well as its blue collar and low brow feel. The original phenomenon unleashed moral panic but the contemporary raggare subculture tends to be met with amusement or mild disapproval by mainstream society. A typical contemporary raggare might be a 45-year old skilled blue collar worker living in a small town, who spends part of his spare time fine tuning his 1960s Pontiac and his vacation meeting other raggare, with wife and children sometimes tagging along.

      Description of the subculture

Raggae have existed since the 1950s and have not changed much since then. Cars are an important part of the subculture, especially V8-powered cars and other large cars from the USA Statistically, the most common raggare car (Swe raggarbil) is the 1960s Pontiac Bonneville They are plentiful, classic, relatively cheap, and have a huge backseat so the Raggare can pile in all of their friends. Raggare have been described as closely related to the hot rod culture, but while hotrodders in the US have to do extensive modifications to their cars to stand out, raggare can us stock US cars and still standout compared to the more sober Swedish cars. Other used cars are the fintail Mercedes and the Opel Kapitän.

Popular sources of influence are elements from American popular culture of the 1950s, such as the movies Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean, and American Graffiti.

The clothes and hairstyle are that of 1950s rockabilly. Blue jeans, cowboy boots, white t-shirts, sometimes with print (also used to store a pack of cigarettes by folding the sleeve), leather or denim jacket. The hair is styled using Brylcreem or some other pomade.

The confederate flag seem to be popular items in the subculture, but raggare are often oblivious to their meanings and are not necessarily racists, rather they embrace the rebellious message of the flag.

      Raggare history

When raggare first appeared, they caused a moral panic with concerns about the use of alcohol, violence, high-speed driving, and having sex in the back seat. Raggare gangs were seen as a serious problem. The film Raggare! covered the issue in 1959.

Later, raggare often got into fights with hippies and punks, something described in the punk rock song "Raggare Is a Bunch of Motherfuckers" by Rude Kids (and later re-recorded by Turbonegro). When The Sex Pistols played in Sweden on 28 July 1977, a group of raggare waited outside and cornered some young girls who came out from the show. The girls had safety pins through their cheeks, and the raggare ripped them right out their faces. The band was upstairs drinking beer when they heard about it. Sid Vicious wanted to go down and fight, and someone else suggested they should get the limousine and run them over. In the end, the gig promoter called the police. The Hjo band Reklamation was forced to cancel a gig after threats from raggare. Also Rude Kids was forced to cancel a sold out gig as the police didn't have the manpower to offer protection against raggare. When Rude Kids played in Stockholm the police had to bring in seven police cars to stop the raggare. When The Stranglers played in Sweden, their followers were caught making Molotov cocktails, and the police intervened after a fight broke out.

  27. QUESTION:
    Alternative drinks to Gatorades?
do u know any alternative drinks that can replace Gatorades or sport drinks?
I was thinkin of slightly salted water, but i dont think its the same tho..
    Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
company based in Park City, Utah, announced today that they are launching a vitamin-fortified isotonic sports drink called TUFF GUYZ. According to a release from the company, the drink was dreamed up by a guy named Brad Weidman, who is involved with Tough Guy Films, an entertainment company that has been involved in 3D, comic book and anime sports characters.

"I always felt that sports drinks were a functional drink but they didn't taste all that good" Weidman said, in the release. "We worked very hard to create the winning combination of great taste, a blast of vitamins, and no salty aftertaste."

The release says that the sports drink market is untapped in the youth area. While I assure you this isn't the case, I do think I know what audience this group is aiming for -- snowboarders and skateboarders, which Gatorade has not done much with.

"Gatorade has a ton of utility at alternative sports, but it's not part of our sponsorship strategy," Gatorade's czar of sports marketing Tom Fox told us. "The reason is two-fold. There are not great opportunities for the athletes to be seen drinking (no true 'sidelines') and Mountain Dew and others got there first and the environment is extremely cluttered with a wide variety of beverages."

"We know through research that these athlets are drinking a ton of Gatorade and understand the benefits it offers during long days of climbing the mountain to get to the half-pipe or after spending hours on a hot BMX track in full gear. It's just not the best sponsorship showcase for us."

The labels on the new Tuff Guyz sports drinks include action figures. The drink includes B and E vitamins and will be available in five flavors including Orange Mango Fire, Citrus Berry Blue, Lemon Lime Green Fire, Grape Berry Deep Purple Fire and Fruit Punch Red Fire.

"By offering a graphic anime alternative to what's out there the guys at TUFF GUYZ could have the next Gatorade on their hands," said Richard H. Davis, President of Beverage Marketing USA, Inc., in the release.

As we learned as early as 1970 with Coca-Cola and Olympade, bottle graphics have little to do with great market share unless what is in the bottle is great. And just like there is no next Michael Jordan, there is no next Gatorade

Is there a single supermarket/convenience store that doesn't have a Gatorade promotion going on? I have no idea how this stuff works -- obviously it's individual co-op agreements between Gatorade and the vendors -- but everywhere I am, there's some kind of deal on the stuff. I'm currently in San Marcos, Texas, on assignment, and I walked into a Walgreens. I was only going to get two bottles of Gatorade, but then I noticed that if I bought 2-20 oz. six packs for .98, I could get this unbelieveable cooler bag that was sitting on top of the shelf. It said the retail value of the case was .99, but I think it's even higher. Then I walked into a local supermarket chain and sure enough, there it was: Buy two 64 oz. Gatorades and get one free. It's funny how in all the stores that have Gatorade promotions how little of a presence POWERade has. It makes you wonder whether the promotion dollar essentially kicks their competitor out of the store.

      Gatorade Among Product Placement Leaders
According to Nielsen Product Placement, Gatorade is among the brands with the most product placement on television shows in the first quarter of 2005. Here is the top 10 list with total number of impressions and shows that featured the brand.

      1. Coca Cola (1,931) -- American Idol, Amazing Race, King of Queens

      2. Everlast (1,395) -- The Contender, The Road To Stardom

      3. adidas (476) -- The Road To Stardom, Summerland, Eve

      4. Sports Illustrated (475) -- Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Model Search, King of the Hill

      5. Nike (466) -- Amazing Race, King of Queens, Will & Grace

      6. Gatorade (441) -- The Contender, Two & A Half Men

      7. The Home Depot (324) -- The Contender, Apprentice, Survivor

      8. Toyota (319) -- The Contender, Amazing Race, Law & Order

"The Contender offered us a terrific opportunity because it was authentic athletes and an authentic occasion," Gatorade spokeswoman Heather Mitchell told Bloomberg News.

Heather was a tremendous help when I was writing "First In Thirst." Without her coordinating efforts, I would never have gotten things done on time. One more note on the product placement front, I washed down my car at the Bristol mobil station with a squeegee with a Gatorade advertisement on the handle. Given how many gas stations have convenience stores, I think that is a good, cheap ad buy.

      Vitaminwater Battles Gatorade
Glaceau, makers of Vitaminwater, will be unveiling a new subline called Perform. The company says that while the drink is not a sports drink per se, it's clear that officials are aiming at the lightning bolt.

“Before now, active people have had one choice when it came to a sports beverage and not only does that option offer no nutritional value, it’s also based purely on salt,” said Glaceau's founder and CEO J. Darius Bikoff said, in a company release. “Luckily for active people like us, perform provides a healthier, natural option without the extra sodium which most of us are getting way too much of in our diets.”

Company officials say the drink will have more total electrolytes than Gatorade in the form of calcium, magnesium and potassium, but the drink will not have the sodium that is found in Gatorade.

In a massive marketing blitz aimed to get the message out, they've signed 20 players on 20 Major League Baseball teams, including: Kerry Wood, Jim Thome, Francisco Rodriguez, David Wright, Kevin Millar, Jason Schmidt, Aubrey Huff, Mike Lowell, Austin Kearns, Jay Gibbons, Brandon Inge, Brian Lawrence, Richie Sexton, Jack Wilson, Travis Hafner, Torii Hunter, David Eckstein, Brad Lidge, Michael Young and Marcus Giles. The deal was conceived by Reed Bergman, CEO of Playbook Inc., a sports marketing firm.

“Baseball players across the country love Vitaminwater because it works for them both on and off the field,” Bikoff said. “Realistically, most people aren’t running daily triathlons so the needs of an extreme athlete aren’t relevant for the vast majority of us who just want to perform at our personal best every day, and that’s where vitaminwater comes in.”

The drink, which will have 50 calories per serving and has a suggested retail price of .49, is schedule to hit shelves soon.

The company says it has experienced more than 200 percent compounded annual growth since it's inception in 1996 and more than 250 million bottles of the product are sold every year. It is not the first time Glaceau has taken a shot at Gatorade.

I found this on a label last year: "It has come to our attention that, at the conclusion of some sporting events, athletes pour large buckets of a 'sports drink' over their coach's head. Not to be outdone, we encourage our loyal consumers to do the same after a grueling match. O.K., sure. Dumping this over your chess team coach's head may sound strange, but trust us, nothing gets chess fans more pumped up." Gatorade has 21 total spokespeople. Two of them are baseball players -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

  29. QUESTION:
What is you favorite classic movie between 1940-1990's?

    • ANSWER:
That's an impossible question to answer. There are so many classics, tons of great films. An innumerable amount. I'll try and limit it to five per decade, though...and I'll FAIL, I know it.

      1940s
Citizen Kane - A brilliant look into the life of a plastic, depressed, love worn old millionaire. Justifiably one of the greatest films ever produced.
Bicycle Thieves - Perhaps, even moreso than Kane, the defining film of its time. Rich in human character and emotion, and not focused on special effects.
Casablanca - Top-notch acting, a great storyline, and one of the most fantastic love stories ever told.
The Third Man - Possibly the quintessential film noir picture. Does an excellent job at drawing in the audience.
It's a Wonderful Life - Sure, it's overplayed, sure, it's sappy and cheesy and ridiculous, but that doesn't mean it isn't brilliant.

      1950s
Vertigo - Hitchcock's masterpiece. Undeniably one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, mystery film ever shot. Not to mention the fantastic ending.
Singin' in the Rain - One of the most enduring comedies/musicals in the film industry.
The Seven Samurai - Contains excellent emotional moments, and some of the most in-depth characters to grace the camera.
Touch of Evil - A very disturbing affair. One of Welles's masterpieces, and another essential noir classic.
Some Like it Hot - Marilyn Monroe, cross dressing, and Billy Wilder? What more could you possibly want?

      1960s
Lolita - A perverse, sick, twisted movie about a love affair between a teenager and a college professor. Excellent direction, with one of cinema's most controversial plots.
Spartacus - The most expensive film ever recorded, and one of the best. Arguably the only 'intelligent' epic ever released.
Dr. Strangelove - No doubt, the essential black comedy. Some of the single most hilarious lines, sequences, and characters in the realm of movies.
2001: A Space Odyssey - Speaks for itself. The most visually engaging and intellectually structured film ever recorded.
8 1/2 - Fellini's masterpiece. It's entertaining, serious, and certainly not to be taken completely seriously.

      1970s
A Clockwork Orange - Yes, the most controversial movie of all time. Gang rape, strong violence, mind control, and Beethoven. Very artistic and insightful.
Barry Lyndon - Easily film's greatest period piece. Beautiful to look at and incredibly captivating.
The Godfather - Mobsters always seem to make the best movies. Still regarded as one of the ultimate American films. Brando gives one of his top performances.
The Godfather Part II - Imagine the first Godfather film, but enhanced in every conceivable way.
Chinatown - Polanski capitalizes on all of film noir's elements and improves them. Nicholson gives his supreme performance.

      1980s
Blade Runner - Fantastic sci-fi masterpiece, Ridley Scott's definitive masterpiece.
The Empire Strikes Back - The greatest Star Wars movie of them all. Considerably darker and more mature than the first installment.
The Shining - Another Kubrick masterpiece. Plausibly the greatest horror movie of all time.
Blue Velvet - David Lynch. The end.
Brazil - Terry Gilliam. The end.

      1990s
Schindler's List - Spielberg's masterpiece. Substantially more grim than his previous works.
Titanic - Sappy? Certainly. Unrealistic? Without a doubt. Greatest technically influential movie ever? Hell, yes.
Pulp Fiction - Surreality for the win.
Forrest Gump - A very fun, touching movie. I can solemnly say that I don't know anyone who dislikes this movie.
Unforgiven - Clint Eastwood's best movie.

      123) Leave a note on someones car window.
      124) Photo-bomb someones picture.

      126) Spend a whole day barefoot... Outside!
      127) Superglue a quarter to the ground. Watch.
      128) Dress up as guys and go out.
      129) Paint each other.

That's about it, but the list is still in progress, of course!

I crossed out a few things, that's why there are gaps between the numbers.

  39. QUESTION:
Americans - July 4th - do you celebrate and if so how?
I work with adults with learning disabilities. We have 'special days' where we celebrate other cultures. One of these is July 4th, American Independence day.

What simple foods could we eat for lunch?
    How could we dress up?
How can we decorate our centre for the day?
What activities could we do, or research on the internet?

What will you or your community be doing? What does the avarage American do?

Pictures; links etc would be great.
    Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Have them make replicas of the American flag and decorate the room with all of them. Wear red, white and blue clothes. Eat hot dogs, burgers, french fries and a MUST is apple pie. Perhaps rent a film about the time

  42. QUESTION:
Is it just me or do you find these people good looking?
I am not an old women, I'm only a teen but I was wondering if you find any of the following men hot, all of my friends seem to think I have weird taste in guys!
    Bradley Cooper
    Usher Raymond
    Ne-Yo
The guy who plays Iron Man, sorry can't remember his name (but only in the film in real life he doesn't look so good!)
That's about it just curious, thanks

    • ANSWER:
I only find Bradley Cooper good looking, would I say he is something out of the ordinary, no he is like the boy next door type, blonde hair, blue eyes, chiseled jaw, tall, typical all good boy American looks. He is a stud, would I look at him twice if he walked down the street yes, perhaps, I would blush, hes cute , I mean he is not all that, but hes okay and charming it seems, as for "Iron Man" AKA, Robert Downy Jr. he is okay, but if I did not know who he was and was walking down the street um, I don't think I would look at him twice but perhaps.

  43. QUESTION:
WOMEN ONLY - What are your favourite selection of great films?
I am attempting to write a book about films for women - not chick flicks as such but a good variety of films that women enjoy, including some of my personal favourites. I would really appreciate your input of favourite films and why you like them. Many thanks

    • ANSWER:
It's easy to list films, but how do you explain why you like a film? For me, that's practically impossible to explain in a few words, a few paragraphs or even a few pages why I like a particular film. That could be asking too much. I've been a film buff throughout my life, and I love many genres. I can give you an enormously long list of movies that I have watched multiple times; I mean that many of these I have viewed 100+ times.

  45. QUESTION:
Need to write a one page paper on "Bad Day"!!!!!?
I need to write a one page paper on "Bad Day." Can anyone give me as much info as you can on this song. Composer, lyricist, facts, anything and everything

    • ANSWER:
Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee you go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carryin' on

Because you had a bad day
      You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
      You say you don't know
      You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
      You had a bad day
      The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
      You had a bad day
      You had a bad day

Will you need a blue sky holiday?
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

      You had a bad day
      You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
      You say you don't know
      You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
      You had a bad day
      The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
      You had a bad day

      (Oooh.. a holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
      And I'm not wrong

      (yeah...)

So where is the passion when you need it the most
      Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
      You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
      You say you don't know
      You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
      You had a bad day
      You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
      You had a bad day
      You had a bad day

      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
      lyrics

      singer is Daniel Powter

This song is saying that even if you have a bad day once in a while, things get better.

In Europe, this was released in 2005 and became a hit when Coca-Cola used it as the theme song for an advertising campaign on the continent. It topped the Italian and German charts and was #2 in England for 3 weeks. In America, Powter's album was released in 2006, and this song became a hit when the TV show American Idol started using it as a theme for the "goodbye video" for the departing contestants who were voted off the show on the fifth season.

The video features actress Samaire Armstrong, who plays Anna on the popular American teen TV show The O.C. Powter refused to star in the video with Armstrong because of their difference in age: he was 35 and she was 25. While a younger actor stars opposite Armstrong, Powter appears playing the piano while wearing his distinctive beanie.

Powter is from British Columbia. When this hit #1 in the US, Powter became the first Canadian to top the US charts since Nickelback did it with "How You Remind Me" in 2002.

Mitchell Froom, who previously worked with Elvis Costello, produced the album.

This was the top selling digital download of 2006, proving that American Idol fans prefer downloading songs to buying CDs. Despite selling about 2 million downloads, the CD had not gone platinum by 2007.

A cover version by Alvin And The Chipmunks returned this song to the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2008. The Chipmunks' version originally featured on the 2007 soundtrack album for the film Alvin And The Chipmunks.

      hope this helps.

  46. QUESTION:
What's some good fuck you music?
I need something to blast when I feel pissed off, which is happening a lot lately.
I'm not a fan of metal, so none of that please. I like stuff like Hollywood Undead, but I play their songs too often.
I need something headbanging, fast, rock or rap or something.
