Movie Streaming Services Like Netflix

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What Service offers the best movie streaming experience?
Well, basically what I'm asking is what streaming provider (or service) has the best catalog of movies and is always updated with the newest films.. Would be nice if it also included movies that were recently released on DVD.. I have Netflix currently and I mainly use it for watching shows like Family Guy, South Park, or Anime and some occasional movies since we all know Netflix's movie lineup is mediocre to say the least.. I plan on keeping them but that's the general idea. Any streaming service like netflix, hulu, crackle etc.. have the service i want?

  5. QUESTION:
How media streaming players and streaming work?
I'm looking into buying a media player box to properly play the movies and shows I have sitting on my hard drive. I notice all the models I look at have "streaming" as a feature. I know streaming as in from a website to my computer, but how does this work with my TV and TV shows? Is it just referring to services like Netflix?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes this is confusing.

Most of them mean 'streaming services' but others mean you can surf your PC hard drive wirelessly and play the media files it can find. Look at the WD TV Live box for example.

  6. QUESTION:
Will I be able to use Kindle Fire for Netflix and hulu?
I am looking at getting a Kindle Fire but want to know if it will work with streaming services such Netflix and Hulu. Does anyone have any input on this?

    • ANSWER:
Hi, Susan, think about it - Amazon is reported to loose up to on each Kindle Fire in hope to make that back and then some on selling you movies and apps. Would you think Amazon will allow their movie streaming competitors into their subsidized device? Of course not! Also, here's other facts about Kindle Fire you might want to consider:
      - Kindle Fire doesn't have microSD slot that, for example, Nook Color has thus it is stuck with 6 GB usable internal storage unlike Nook Color that can get up to 32 GB card in. Kindles are made to be almost like a "dumb terminal" of the past to make sure you're tied up to Amazon's storage on the web (for which you need Wi-Fi connection to get to) and you can only store content you get from Amazon there, not other files. Quoting Amazon on Kindle Fire: "Free cloud storage for all Amazon content". Get it, Amazon content?
      - The stats of how long the battery can last (Kindle Fire theory is 7.5 hours) are taken with Wi-Fi off. It will last only about 3 hours if you use it to access content from their Cloud storage over Wi-Fi.
      - Amazon can spy on your web activity through their new cloud-integrated web browser of Kindle Fire.
      - VERY IMPORTANT – lack of microSD slot means that if you decide to root your Kindle Fire, you’ll have to root the actual device thus there will be no coming back. On Nook Color, you can make it boot from a “rooted” microSD card and if you want to get back to the original Nook you can just take out the card and reboot.
      - Kindle Fire doesn't have a camera.
      - Kindle Fire has about 70% less usable screen area than iPad 2.
      - Kindle doesn't support eBooks in ePub format that is the most used format in the world.
      - Kindle app store contains only Amazon approved apps and it does not include (and will not include) Netflix app that iPad has and Nook Color is getting thus again you're stuck with Amazon content only.
      - Amazon confirmed that you cannot download/stream anything to Kindle Fire when traveling outside US.
      - Amazon says it will review every app in its Appstore for Fire compatibility, as part of an automated process. Rejected apps will include those that rely on a gyroscope, camera, WAN module, Bluetooth, microphone, GPS, or micro SD. Apps are also forbidden from using Google's Mobile Services (and in-app billing), which, if included, will have to be "gracefully" removed. In terms of actual content, Amazon has outlawed all apps that change the tablet's UI in any way (including theme- or wallpaper-based tools), as well as any that demand root access.
      - I'd recommend waiting for Nook Color 2 that is rumored to be released by Barnes & Noble shortly.

  7. QUESTION:
Is streaming a movie in HD just as good as watching it on Blu ray?
If you watch a series on Netflix in HD or another similar streaming service is it just as good/better than watching it on blu ray or does something about the streaming diminish the quality (compression etc)?

    • ANSWER:
The streaming services do use compression so it is not as good as the true, un-compressed 1080 video you get from a BluRay.

The streaming services assume the average user has a 24" computer monitor so the compression is not usually visible. Try the streaming on a 40+ inch television or a front projector - then you might see some compression artifacts.

  8. QUESTION:
What streaming and dvd services are best for my needs?
I watch kids movies (mostly cartoons), food documentaries, and fashion related movies.
I watch food network, TLC, Disney, Nickelodeon, Travel channel, History channel, discovery channel, HBO kids.
Storage wars, preppers, hey arnold, rugrats, pawn stars, almost everything on food network, almost everything on travel channel, twilight zone, Malcolm in the middle, Simpson's, proud family, fairly odd parents, jimmy neutron, food challenge, iron chef, bizarre world, ugly betty. Recess, crashbox.
What streaming service and / or dvd service fits my needs best?

    • ANSWER:
Netflix is pretty great. It's easy to search for what you want to watch and you can stream it on a wii or Xbox or even an iPad etc. It's very convenient for me. But the downside is, if there's a movie they don't have for steaming you have to order it in the mail. Though there's still a lot of programs to stream. It'll be great for you if you have patience for mail movies. I dont xD

      Hope this helps. :)

Why does netflix streaming service have rubbish movies?
I only want it for the bludclart streaming. Why dont they have new movies?

  13. QUESTION:
Is there a video streaming service with a larger selection than Netflix?
I have a streaming only account with them, WILL NOT be getting the DVD option. Netflix is cool and all but, their streaming selection is really limited IMO. Lots of "B movies" and documentaries. A lot are good, just, I wish there was more. Does anyone know of a similar service that has a larger selection of movies and TV shows?

What Disney movies are available for streaming on Netflix?
Unfortunately I don't have Netflix, so I can't really check. I have never seen any of the original Disney movies, and I wanted to during my winter break.

    • ANSWER:
Pretty much all of them - including Pocahontas.

Disney has inked a new multi-year licensing deal that makes Netflix the exclusive U.S. subscription TV service to get the Mouse House's first run live-action and animated films. Deal ends Disney's existing pay TV deal with Starz beginning in 2016.

Deal includes titles from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Disneynature. Also included in the agreement are Disney direct-to-video releases, which will be made available on Netflix starting in 2013.

  18. QUESTION:
How do I improve my video quality when streaming Netflix through my Xbox Live account?
I just activated this service today and the video quality isn't that great. I have the 1080i tv and at&t high speed internet.....I hear the video quality is dependent on my internet connection though. Currently, when I start the movie and my xbox determines the quality, 2/4 bars are highlighted. Is there a way to improve my video quality? Without upgrading my connection? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
How is your Xbox connected to your network? if it is wireless try it wired to see if that helps..

What else is happening on your network? if you have other people sharing your connection try it when they aren't using it.. and turn off any filesharing or active high bandwidth programs..

Does your router support UPnP (Universal Plug and Play).. if it does enable that.. it will let the Xbox open ports through the router easier and may improve the connection..

      How fast is your connection?

      Good Luck..

  19. QUESTION:
When Netflix switches in September will they show the good movies on streaming or keep it the same content?
Seems that to get the quality movies you have to get those by mail. I'm just trying to decide if I should stick with the mail service or go streaming. Thanks all!

    • ANSWER:
No the streaming will be the same.

The reason why Netflix cannot offer most movies for streaming ha to do with the Movie Production companies. Basically they think that Netflix does not charge enough for streaming content. That is why HBO does not allow their original programming to be "streamed". That is why first run movies or very popular movies are not available for streaming. So basically the only way to get better streaming content is for Netflix to make a deal with the production companies and start charging folks 20 bucks a month to stream or for the production companies will have to accept that 8 bucks a month is the best deal they will get for streamed content.

  20. QUESTION:
I am shopping for high speed service. How fast a speed would I need to stream online movies and play games?

  21. QUESTION:
How many devices can you stream netflix on at the same time?
How many devices can you stream at the same time like netflix computer tv and all that. I heard that you can only stream 3 at a time. Also is there a limit on how many devices you can have on hooked up on one account.
I mean how many can you watch at the same time like if 5 people all used netflix on xbox at the same time from the same account is that possible?

    • ANSWER:
You can have up to six devices activated on your account. Officially, streaming only users are allowed to stream simultaneously on two devices. Some users have been getting booted off when they attempt to do so. I have never had this problem. I have streamed over 100 hours simultaneously in the last two months. It is easy to get different answers depending on how you contact Netflix. @Netflixhelps on Twitter tells people that you can only stream to one device at a time. Phone customer service will either confirm that or say you can do a two at a time depending on which rep you speak to. I suggest you try it for yourself and see what happens.

Jimobasa: I mean watching it on PC from their website. I'm not referring to any illegal activity. I've already read the subscription plan.

I have pc's with Vista, cable internet service, and no other audio problems. When I renewed my netflix subscription and tried to watch the streaming movies, the video was great but there was no audio on either of my pc's. What could be causing this?

  25. QUESTION:
How can I use a service similiar to Netflix in the UK?
I am more interested in streaming American TV shows, such as Chuck, Dexter, Arrested Development etc, rather than the movie aspect, which I am aware is available through services such as Lovefilm. I was wondering if anybody knows of any service to do this?

    • ANSWER:
It would have to be a service associated with the UK licensees of those programmes at the very least.

No legitimate service would exist to get around the rights of the UK channels that own those rights.

  26. QUESTION:
Why most good movies in Netflix are only available in DVD?
I have an account with Netflix for streaming movies on my PC or TV. I'm very happy with the service, but why most of the good movies I'd like to see are only available in DVD? I'd like to ask Netflix but there's no options available for questions in their web site.

    • ANSWER:
Not every movie and TV show is available for Instant Streaming. Netflix has to buy the rights to stream the movies and TV shows they have and can't just play everything. They could be sued for copyright infringement and other things if they did.

      Sorry:(

  27. QUESTION:
Is there any way I can stream food instantly to my refridgerator?
I know they can do it with things like movies and television shows with services such as Netflix and Movies on Demand, but is there any service that exists that instantly puts food in my refridgerator?

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately not yet. Once they figure out teleportation and how to reduce some down to electrons transmit over a wire or through the air then re-solidify it in its original form they might be able to stream food instantly to your fridge. So i wouldn't hold your breath. Till then you'll just have to make do with delivery pizza and Chinese food. Either that or invent time travel and travel to a time where that is possible.

  28. QUESTION:
What speed is best for netflix streaming movies?
We have 1.5 and that is too slow. I just spoke with netflix customer service and she said they recommend at least 2.4. I looked at our upgrade options at qwest.com and the next one is 7, but they say under it it is best for large files and working at home. The next up is 12 and under that it says best for movies. Anybody have any advice on this?

    • ANSWER:
I pay for 3.5 but actually only get 2.6 and I watch tv shows and movies and videos all the time without any hangups/slowdowns/pixels. So TRUST ME, 7 would be more than you'd need so that's the one I would get. You don't need 12 unless you have 3 or more computers online at the same time. :)

  29. QUESTION:
How do you get Netflix to stream on your xbox?
Pardon my ignorance. I am not to familiar with how to view netflix from your TV.

I have an xbox. How does this work? Do I need a router?

How do I set this up?

    I need help;

Lets say I take my xbox to my parents house and connect it to there tv. Would it also work just like at my house.

How do you control the Netflix menu? With the xbox control?

What if I go to my parents house and want to watch my netflix account. Can I do it on there xbox?

    Some one please help?

    • ANSWER:
You obviously need a router and an Internet connection since Netflix is a movie download/streaming service. You also need an XboxLive Gold Subscription and a seperate Netflix subscription.

Your Xbox doesn't care where it's plugged in or to whose internet it's connected, just that it has power and Internet connection it will happily work.

  30. QUESTION:
Do I get charged every time a Netflix movie gets lost in the mail?
I've had Netflix for about 2 weeks and I love it. However, I really have bad postal service and two of the movies have already gotten lost in the mail. Am I going to get charged every time this happens? I'm sure it will probably happen again.

P.S. I know about the instant streaming, but there are a lot of movies that are not available for streaming.

    • ANSWER:
if netflix mailed them and post office is having the bad service you need to call netflix and tell them you never got them but you have to wait 5 days before you can report any of them. but if you returned and the post office mailed them out and loses them then you probably need to put a trace on it. just remember the address that the movie was mailed to. and also call netflix and let them know if you don't see it on their site that it was returned or not, don't think you'll get charge for it either way

  31. QUESTION:
Is Netflix just as good or better than having regular cable?
We have Cox cable and we pay over 0 bucks a month for their service and I wonder if cancelling it would be a smart move...Does Netflix have good selection of TV Shows? We would purchase a gaming console to stream it on TV. Do they have a good selection of movies also without ordering the movies to be shipped to us every month?

Also, If we have a gaming console in our living room, do we need more consoles in our rooms to stream TV and stuff in there?

    • ANSWER:
The picture is not as good as cable but may be good enough. What you are thinking about is called cord cutting. Read about it around the internet. http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/cord-cutting-four-steps-to-cut-the-cord/ http://blogs.clarionledger.com/consumerwatch/2013/01/20/cutting-the-cord-replacing-cablesatellite-with-streaming/ and http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/active-voice/article_5ea05928-71ac-11e2-b34d-001a4bcf887a.html

Cord cutting is hardest for sport fans.

I don't have the PS3 yet and am not an experienced user so I need something relatively easy to figure out haha.

    • ANSWER:
PS3 only supports Hulu Plus. I haven't yet found a set-top box that supports plain old Hulu unfortunately.

However, I've been using TVersity Pro on my PC to send a stream to the PS3.

TVersity basically takes any form of media and just streams it to your PS3, 360, or other set-top box. It will re-encode the data into a format that your device can understand. This is great since the PS3's video support is pretty small.

To use TVersity, you will need a PC, a PS3, and a fast home network. I do not recommend using the PS3's wireless adapter. Its antenna is not very good, and has trouble getting a strong signal from the router compared to my (ancient) laptop that's in the same room. A weak signal will cause problems hiccups with streaming. I used to get problems with TVersity and the PS3 until I put the PS3 on a wired connection. Much better.

You will install TVersity on your PC and use it as your media server. The PS3 will detect TVersity automatically and display any media TVersity knows about. For instance, I added some shows to my queue on Hulu. Then I added my Hulu account to TVersity. Bam. Now the PS3 can see my Hulu queue. I select play and after a few seconds, the show starts up.

Not bad for . The free version of TVersity does everything but allow you to add internet sources, so you'll probably want to get the Pro version like I did.

  35. QUESTION:
How long after the initial DVD release of a movie is it streamed on Netflix?
I read that when movies are initially released on Netflix they are DVD/DVD & Blu Ray only for a period of time, without the ability to stream it from your computer or PS3/Xbox. How long is the waiting period between being able to order the DVD and being able to stream? I am looking into getting Netflix, but I think I'll be streaming from my PS3 more often than ordering the DVDs through the mail.

    • ANSWER:
I also thought this when i started up my netflix account, and my advice is to exploit the free trial offer for the first month and see if you like it. I also have a ps3 and i use it very often to stream movies. The thing is if you aren't huge into movies then you may not be using this service as much as i do. A majority of the movies that you can select for instant streaming are either old 80's movies or a ton of indie films with limited mainstream movie selection. I have seen quite a bit of really good indie films through this service, and they also have some classics like the usual suspects and the big lebowski, but if you are more into a mainstream movie experience then you may not use it as much as you would like. That being said, they get the dvds and blu-rays to you so quickly you'd think a dvd wizard placed them in your mailbox overnight lol. So you may end up using that service more than you originally anticipated.

Will streaming movies from Netflix increase your internet usage bill?
We just got netflix and we've already watched a few movies and tv shows on it and I wanted to know if it will increase your internet bill a lot. I know it will but is it a huge amount or not very much? How much did your bill go up by? We have wireless highspeed internet and we watch the movies through the Wii. I think we'll probably watch 10 or so movies a month. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Most internet service plans have unlimited usage, is your plan different? Are you limited to the number of bytes or time spent on the internet? If you are, then your bill will go up if you go over your limits. And what an ISP charges varies depending on the plan.

What kind of internet connection do you have? Because it's streaming, the speed of your internet can easily affect how well it plays.

How does netflix price hike work?
I dont have the DVD plan. I just have where you can stream movies only. Are they raising the price for people that have just streaming?

    • ANSWER:
Netflix will now separate DVD and streaming services into two separate plans, each priced at .99. A combo plan will still be available, but at an increased rate of .98 a month.

There will also be a standalone DVD rental plan that lets the user check out two discs at a time for .99 per month. The .99 DVD rental plan will let users check out one title at a time.

  44. QUESTION:
What's the difference between xfinity and cable?
Ok here is the rub, there is Netflix, flixter and hulu. Ok we all that, but here is the real qustion ( what is the difference between xfinity and cable? Niki

    • ANSWER:
Comcast is a company that provides cable TV and internet. Comcast also has such a horrible reputation due to bad service and horrible customer service, that they created the brand name "XFinity" to refer to their services, and also distance themselves from their own corporate name. However it's still just the same old crummy signals from the same old crummy Comcast.

Netflix is a subscription service that allows you to watch movies over the internet on your PC/laptop, or on your TV if you have a device that supports this like a game console, certain models of blu-ray players, or a dedicated set-top box like Roku. Also some HDTVs also have this ability. Netflix can also work on some mobile devices as well.

Flickster and Hulu are other video streaming services, which work on your computer, mobile device, or TV same as Netflix.

  45. QUESTION:
What is the most popular legal video downloading service that doesn't work with streaming?
Netflix and Blockbuster work with streaming.

iTunes would be at the top of that list. They reached 200 million TV episodes sold on October 16, 2008, and 2 million movies sold on July 31, 2007.

  46. QUESTION:
What is the cheapest you pay for time warner cable service?
Just cable- I do not want to bundle with internet or phone.

I do not want HBO or any premium, just what USED to be considered "BASIC SERVICE" (as in all the networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX + cable channels like E!, MTV, TBS, TNT, etc).

    • ANSWER:
The cheapest way is not to pay for cable, period. All of the channels are on the internet at no cost or for far less than a regular cable bill. You can see everything off of the computer, even if you have to pay per episode or movie it is less than cable. Purchase high speed internet, about 12kbps the highest is 24kbps. the faster the speed, the more smooth the video and faster overall response time. Phone service can be through the internet VOIP Voice Operated Internet Protocal. It takes a little work but you will have everything you need and want. If you want greater ease on somethings, Netflix has a streaming service for .00 a month on existing game consoles, Wii, PSP, Xbox and so forth. Roku, Apple even Boxee set top boxes are more cost effective than basic cable. Roku costs -69 to purchase and Apple TV's set top box . Free TV on both applications from many of the major channel stations, what has to be paid for you can better afford if cable service is affordable.

      Best.

  47. QUESTION:
Can I rent a movie from iTunes without downloading it to my computer?
I have a macbook air and it doesn't have much storage, so I don't want to download a bunch of movies. If I rent them, can I stream them to my macbook or iPad without downloading them? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
When you rent on iTunes it does download to your computer for viewing, however the space is not terribly large and will be removing after the rental time expires.

If you do not want to download anything, check out subscription services like Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Amazon Video - all of these offer a wide selection and stream.

Free alternatives for streaming include Crackle, and various TV station apps like CBS, ABC, etc

  48. QUESTION:
Is netflix worth getting rid or premium channels?
We're trying to decide whether to get Netflix and get rid of our premium channels (HBO, Starz, etc.) or keep the premium channels and not get Netflix. I think getting Netflix would be convenient because they have series that are aired on nights when I'm busy, but I don't know if they have as many movies as the premium channels.

    • ANSWER:
Netflix tries to be a video store replacement.

If you want recent shows not on disk - go look at HuluPlus for streaming recent TV shows.

My advice: Look at the shows on the premium channels that you really really like. Not the ones you 'catch' if you are bored and channel surf, but the ones you are a fan of. Make a list and write down the price for the service. Then ask is this worth it to you?

A few weeks ago they had a 'free weekend' of HBO, Showtime, Starzs so I hunted through the listings and was surprised at all the years-old movies and un-interesting shows that was on. It was NOT encouraging.

For my tastes, this is the only thing that interested me:

HBO - Game of Thrones. But I can wait for the disks to show up
Showtime - Dexter (but they are not showing scenes now)
Starzs - lots of old movies. I recorded "Roxanne" and "Joyful Noise" but that was about it

That was about it. Not enough interesting content to get me to sign up.

Now - I do have both disk and streaming with Netflix and I enjoy it. Lots of older TV shows (Trek series, Lost Girl, Shows by Joss Wheadon, West Wing, etc.) Thousands of hours of content when I want to watch. Add YouTube and getting a small box like the Western Digital TV Live box to show things and I canceled Showtime last year and frankly do not regret it.

But - it depends on YOUR tastes. If you watch the premium channels more than 3-4 times per week it might be worth keeping. Or you could always turn off the one or two channels that don't interest you.

".. they have series that are aired on nights when I'm busy,.."

WHAT!! Get a DVR. These things let you tell the box what to record and the shows queue up so you can watch them on your schedule. Contact your cable or Sat provider. These things are outstanding and are a must-have in my household.

      Hope this helps.

  49. QUESTION:
What is Netflix gonna offer with the Price increase ?
I am not complaining. It is still a great service at a more than fair price. What are they gonna offer in addition to the streaming content they already have. I know they are trying to go nose to nose with hulu and vudo.

    • ANSWER:
I think that the email said that they are only going to offer more videos on streaming. Here's the email that they sent us. You may have been sent this too.

      Dear,

We want to let you know about two important changes to the Netflix service.

      1. The price of your current plan is changing from .99 a month to .99 a month. This new price will be effective with your next billing statement on or after January 2, 2011, and will be referenced in your Membership Details. With your current plan you can both instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV and receive unlimited DVDs by mail.

      2. We now also offer a new .99 a month plan which lets you instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV. This plan does not include any DVDs. All the titles you can watch instantly on your current plan are also available on this new plan, and as a reminder, not all titles on DVD are available to watch instantly. This new plan is available immediately – if you'd like to switch to this new plan at any time, simply visit Your Account.

Why the changes? Our selection of TV episodes and movies available to stream has grown dramatically, and as a result most members want us to deliver unlimited movies and TV episodes two ways: streaming instantly over the internet plus DVDs by mail. The price change will allow us to continue to offer the popular plan choice of unlimited TV episodes and movies streaming instantly along with unlimited DVDs. The new plan, which does not include DVDs, is a great option for the increasing number of members who only want to watch instantly. The .99 a month price reflects no DVD shipping costs on this plan.

We hope you're enjoying great TV shows and movies from Netflix, and that you'll continue to enjoy Netflix on whichever plan you choose. We realize you have lots of home entertainment options, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have any questions, please call us at 1-800-715-2146.
