Movie Streaming Sites Legal

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where to watch movies online FREE but LEGAL?
So Im in love with Ryan Reynolds and found one of his movies called Buried that I really want to see but I cant see anywhere to rent it. Does anyone know a legal movie streaming site?

    • ANSWER:
That's a very contradictory question, seeing as you can't watch films without having to pay for them. The only exception is a free trial with lovefilm or netflix, depending on where you live. Just remember to cancel the account for the former before the pay day!

  2. QUESTION:
How easy is it to get caught Movie Streaming?
i am talking about sites like dailymotion and megavideo. also is it illegal or legal. i dont want any one word answers or opinions. i wanna know for sure because i have read and read many Q's and A's on this site regarding this and sofar no help. also have people ever got caught just streaming movies uploaded onto other sites? who gets the blame?

    • ANSWER:
First of all yes it is illegal unless the website is paying the original creators to stream that video.

As for getting caught, this would not even be an issue on my mind. I watch movies quite often on watch-movies. Your ISP isn't looking at your online history or videos that you have streamed. They are more worried about direct downloads that are in violation of copyright laws.

All-in-All even if your ISP found out you were streaming movies, no legal action would be taken. Not even a corporate business wants to spend tome and money on court cost, lawyer fees, and all the other legal cost over you streaming video, if anything the website providing the streaming media will be held accountable.

  3. QUESTION:
Is it legal to post links on your website to pirated movies?
Are there rules against posting links to movie streams - NOT DOWNLOADS. Just a links to different websites where you can watch a movie. Like a filesharing site.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it is considered illegal. You are "telling" people to go to a pirated site. Therefore, cheating companies out of their money? Nice one!

  4. QUESTION:
How do I make an online movie channel?
I wanna make my own online movie channel (streaming old grindhouse horror films, kung-fu films, etc), and I have the means to start it up by streaming the movies live over the internet. Now:

    1) What would I do to secure rights to the movies to show them? Does it require exuberant amounts of money, or does it depend on the distributor?

And 2) What website/server could I use to run my movies on? Can anyone recommend a good one?

    • ANSWER:
Going to sound harsh, but if you have to ask how to do this on yahoo answers, you're not equipped for the task.

Firstly, you'd need a team of people to operate the thing. Everything from the massive servers and bandwidth that is needed, to the lawyers who would deal with the legal side of things, to the computer science technicians who would keep the software running smoothly to the office workers who would keep the financial and customer service side of things working.

Plus something like this doesn't just suddenly get started. The internet is massive and new sites don't get started without marketing...and marketing costs money unless you're absurdly clever (and patient) with getting things started virally. So you'd probably have to spend tons of money on advertising .

Sure, it's not impossible...but like I said, if you have to ask on yahoo answers, you obviously don't have connections in the business. Start with something smaller and try to work your way up with project size.

  5. QUESTION:
Is watching TV and Movies online illegal?
I want to know if watching movies or tv under copyright online is punishable by law. I know for one downloading movies directly to your hard drive is a offense, so is uploading them for people to download. But what about the video streaming sites that allow you to watch them? I'm not talking about the legal sites like Netflix etc.
As your not paying for the film are you breaking the law? Has anyone ever been caught for copyright infringement because they watched a movie that's still showing in cinemas online?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Streaming or downloading is exactly the same, legally. Streaming from an unauthorized site is just as illegal as downloading from such a site. IF the site is legal (as netflix, for example), then it's not an issue. But you can assume that if there is no cost to stream, it is NOT legal.

  6. QUESTION:
Is watching a movie for free on movie2k legal?
I'm not asking if the site itself is legal, but I am asking if I myself can get in trouble if I watch some movies on it.

Is it like lymewire where you can get sued big time?

    • ANSWER:
No, it's not illegal to watch, but it is illegal to download, burn to DVD and sell for profit.

The only thing is a lot of online streaming sites have problems with viruses and stuff like that, so you've got to be careful with that. Movie2k has a reputation for being relatively safe, but you should still have your safeguards up.

  7. QUESTION:
Are there any sites I can stream movies legally?
I don't wish to spend money on DVDs on movies that Im gonna watched once and dump it aside. Or movies that I dont know if Im gonna like it or not. Im trying to find sites that offer legal streaming for free or for a fee or perhaps charge me as in pay per view. Any sites that offers that? I dont wish to download it unless I love the movie. For a fee of course.

    • ANSWER:
Netflix. Unless you are trying to steal movies, then I know, but I can't tell you.

  8. QUESTION:
Is it illegal to watch movies on the internet?
I dont meant downloading them, but watching streaming movies that people have uploaded onto their websites?
I found several sites with brand new movies. Are they legal to watch though?
No, I dont mean youtube. They dont usually have full-lenth movies on there.
I mean websites that actually have the entire movie on them.

    • ANSWER:
Technically it is illegal and it's also unethical, since you're stealing profits from everyone who made and distributed the film. There's practically no chance that you'll be prosecuted, though.

  9. QUESTION:
anyone know of a good website for watching movies online for a fee?
I'm wonder if anyone knows of a LEGITIMATE website where I can watch movies streaming online for a one-time fee per movie you watch?

    • ANSWER:
apple lets you do that, basically rent movies online.
http://www.watch-movies-online.tv/ (this site is legal, but has screeners of unreleased movies)
      Hulu.com

  10. QUESTION:
What License is required to show movies online legally?
Hi everyone. Im planning to open a private membership movies site to be shared with my fellow college mates...but im confused which license to get in order to make the website legal. Can anyone give the idea what license to get and where to get them easily?? Will be great if you could also include price quote.

p/s: it'sa membership site where admission is charged and number of members is up to 10k.

    • ANSWER:
Well I'd go along the lines of what Netflix does. Which is you buy a license from the company you wish to get the movies from which allows them to be shown online. To be honest I have little to no idea how you could accomplish this on a small scale, physical renting I think you can do without a license cause ordinary people can buy their own redboxes. I think that if you want to find out what kind of license you need you should try contacting a federal agency through phone or email, try also contacting Netflix and asking their customer representatives how they attain licenses to stream movies online.

UPDATE: After a little digging I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraViolet_%28system%29 try and check it out, it sounds like what you may be looking for.

  11. QUESTION:
opinions on english essay based on Up on Dowloading by Elise McArdle?
People aren’t going to pay for things that they can get for free regardless of legal measures. People for decades now have been downloading music for free; it has become a habit and a way to get their music. If people must pay for music, people would still use live streaming from sites like Pandora and the music industry would still be in a financial situation. None of the professors could come up with a plan they all agreed on, that’s the challenge they, including the music industry, want to overcome. A lot of people involved with the music and film industry are desperate for answers to resolve this issue. The professors discussing difference solutions have drawn a lot of attention. The Recording Industry Association of America is driving for answers.Fisher’s suggestions to help fix the illegal downloading crisis by replacing the copy right system with a government administered compensation plan, funded by a tax on the hardware and systems. The government does not need any more control. If a world crisis occurs, the money sitting there to pay the music industry would not be paid to those artists but to fund the world crisis. If the government starts raising taxes on those items people will just find a shortcut to cut their expenses and could potentially start downloading movies, games, etc., illegally. That would cause a financial issue in many other industries. In the end, with higher taxes on those items to download music, the person would still be paying for their music, which could possibly be effective if they find a way to demolish every shortcut others could find which is simply impossible in the world of internet. For every site taken down by the government and another site with another address will appear. Fisher’s consequential suggestion is Total Control. Unfortunately, people in this world do not like law and following rules. Then, those who still avoid those higher tax rates on downloading software by using old software, they Total Control approach comes into place. Total Control is a program that will send a virus to a person’s computer, to wipe their hard drive, if they download music by avoiding the high tax. With the Total Control approach, which all professors dislike but Microsoft and the music industry like, would be somewhat more effective, however sending virus to wipes someone’s computer is a crime in itself and defeats the purpose of knocking out a current crime of illegal downloading. Another issue people may have with the Total Control is if someone uses another’s computer to illegally download music without the owner’s consent, wiping the hard drive would be unfair punishment to the owner. However, to the music industry they may believe that the owner is responsible for their guest and the actions they make. They are many sites to avoid being tracked especially by the government. There are very computer savvy people out there who know block whichever virus may come their way. Zittrain somewhat agrees with Fisher’s suggestions to tax on downloading equipment however doesn’t agree with the total control as punishment for those who don’t follow those rules. Nessan comments on the fact that government involved is not a good idea and even Zittrain understands that most people will not like the government involved, but justifies it by saying the government will not choose who gets paid, it will be strictly numbers.. "That's a legitimate worry," concedes Fisher."You're placing a fair amount of discretionary power in a government agency." “However, the agency would not choose which artists are paid, he insists, because compensation would be based simply on numbers--which works are downloaded the most often.” (McArdle, 2004) People these days do not trust the government, including people in the industry. To have people get on board with a government agency handling their money in any way will be a hard task to accomplish.Nesson’s idea is to make the music cheaper, but for a lesser quality. If you want the good stuff, you pay more. He wants to make illegal downloading less attractive. Even though neither suggestion is concrete they are working on an idea that will demolish free downloading. What Nesson doesn’t understand is that you only need one person to buy that song or songs and they can create a site to share music. For every person trying to prevent piracy there are 10 people who can avoid their suggestion. The music industry needs to advertise those who actually still buy music legally opposed to trying to stop those who aren’t. Downloading is a new thing opposed to going out to a store to buy a CD, people are lazy these days. They can get their music from the comfort of their home. What the artist are not aware of is that people usually listen to their music and then go to their concerts, buy their clothing, etc. They are many ways to avoid all of the professor’s suggestion.

  12. QUESTION:
Where to watch movies online in Canada legally?
Does anybody know of any Hulu-like websites in Canada that allow you to legally view movies (preferrably streaming video) online? I know most of the TV networks now give access to some of their shows, but I've had trouble finding full-length or even older TV shows. Thanks in advance...

    • ANSWER:
There's no (legal) central site like Hulu. The best you can do is go to Canadian Broadcasters' websites and watch streaming episodes. Global and CTV have quite a few shows, but we've got a lot of catching up to do to get to something like Hulu.

  15. QUESTION:
Is it illegal to sell books and ipods on ebay or any other auction site?
Like aren't books and music protected under copyright laws? What about other things like your shoes or football cards. What if you sell them for more than you paid and make a profit is that still legal or does it totally depend on what the commodity is? I have a feeling not many people are educated on the law anyways

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the country you're in. In some countries it's illegal to sell anything without a government permit. (In some countries, anything the any government employee decides is illegal, is illegal, even if the law says it's legal.) In the US, as long as you pay income tax on any profit, selling things is legal (as long as you don't commit fraud in the sale, etc.) Books, movies, music, football cards - as long as you don't make illegal copies, it's legal.

The law regarding selling is simple enough that common sense covers most of it. Copyright law is trivial, but most people don't bother reading it (although the law, and explanations of what it means, are freely available on the web.) It basically says that making a copy (downloading is making a copy) of a copyrighted work is a violation of copyright. Nothing about "personal use", "not selling", "not making a profit" - all the nonsense you see posted here. *Having* the copy is the violation. (No one will prosecute for the temporary copy you get when you listen to or watch a stream. But torrents? People do get hit for downloading songs.)

  16. QUESTION:
What's the quickest (hopefully legal) way to transfer online video to DVD?
I suffer from the fact that people close to me still watch some shows at the actual times they air on network TV, and their tendency is to fall asleep before the programs end. Networks tend to rebroadcast their programs, especially the ones their sister movie studios own, on their web sites. Can these online videos be converted to DVD, hopefully in a legal way?

    • ANSWER:
Hey, usually the online videos are in streaming FLV format. You need 2 steps to convert the online videos to DVD.
      Step 1: Download online video
There are a lot of free online video downloader software which you can use to download the online video. I am now using this free online video downloader, you can download it at: http://www.flash-on-tv.com/free-youtube-downloader.html.
Step 2: Convert the downloaded online videos to DVDs
For converting the downloaded online videos to DVDs, you need some conversion tools. I have a good luck with this Wondershare DVD Converter Studio which is not free but works well for converting videos to DVDs. You can have a free try of it at: http://www.dvd-ripper-copy.com/dvd-converter-studio.html#181.
Hope that will be of help.

Yes they are illegal. i'm an agent who reports illegal sites like that over to the authorities to get them shut down. i spend alot of time in sites like Yahoo Answers, where people talk sending links to each other,so i can get them all down and turn them over to my employers.

  25. QUESTION:
Is it legal to watch streaming video on the internet?
I have a friend who is freaking out because she think watching streaming video online is illegal. Is it illegal to watch it online? Please put a direct link to where it says it is or it is not. So I can show her proof and she can stop complaining

    • ANSWER:
It depends what site you are talking about. If you are using netflix's fee-based streaming, or official streaming content from network sites like abc.com or hulu, then rest assured the video is legal. If it's from youtube, mega video, or some video sharing site, you can't be sure the content is legal, and if it's a movie or tv show, most likely it isn't legal from these sites.

  26. QUESTION:
Why does hulu let you watch some movies full length and not other movies?
Why not put all movies up for free than?

    • ANSWER:
Because HULU shows movies LEGALLY. They get permission from the film's copyright owners to allow us to stream them. Some movie companies/distributors, etc.. only give them permission to show clips or trailers while others let them show the whole movie. They are keeping it legal. Not to be confused with the illegal sites who get no permission and shut down and re-open under a different name every couple weeks...lol

This is a great website. They're really good with new releases too ( I watched Eclipse the day after it came out)

You just type the movie title into the search bar at the top left hand corner, click on your movie image, and then choose from a list of working links. Just stay away from links provided by megavideo.com because they only let you watch 72 minutes of film before forcing you to pay for a membership.

The site is a free streaming website so it's completely legal. Also, no fees, no surveys, no viruses, no downloading, no memberships. It's a great website and I use it all the time.

  37. QUESTION:
best paid movie site for streaming and New Releases?

Netflix is the only one I know of that does newer movies and is legal.

  38. QUESTION:
Getting permission from the record label companies?
I'll soon going to promote some cool makeup tutorial videos on YouTube and also adding music; but I don't want to get into legal trouble. How do I contact record label companies and how much will they charge me?

    • ANSWER:
It's just not possible. Unless you work for a movie or a tv show or have connection in the music business it's just not realistic that a regular average person could contact a record label to use their music on their amateur YT video -
plus tv shows and movies, etc.. that use music, PAY for it. It would cost you money to use the song you want on your video.

Try royalty free music - Jamendo.com is a great site with tons and tons of music in all different genres. It's free to stream and if you like it, free to download (there is a download button right on the site) and then you can use the songs on YT with no issues.

  39. QUESTION:
Video streaming websites that are like youtube but LEGAL?
I was on the MPAA website and there were some links I never knew existed like movie clips site that's like youtube but authorized. Is there ones for TV shows, older tv shows, stuff like that? That's not youtube where you don't know if it's offical or not. Okay I know some channels are offical but youtube is a mess and I want to enjoy free entertainment legally so I don't have to worry about copyright infrigment stuff.

    • ANSWER:
See if the network has it. But these days the networks would rather sell you a DVD of season 1, etc.

  40. QUESTION:
How much to make a netflix like service?
I want to create a website that will have movies to watch like netflix.com, for now it will not include dvds(streaming only). So what's the legal procedure to do that? Is that even posiible, If so what kind of budget am i looking into. Remember i don't want to be a competitor of netflix. I want to start a small website to watch movies online, but legally.

    • ANSWER:
"i don't want to be a competitor of netflix. I want to start a small website to watch movies online"

...which would make you a competitor of Netflix.

Basically, you need to set up enough servers to service your customer base, hire the technical staff to set up and maintain the web site, and license your movies from the distributors. Depending on the size of the library you want to carry, you should be able to get something up and running for a few million dollars.

  42. QUESTION:
Why do RIAA & MPAA sue people for downlaoding stuff when there are sites that let you download free & legally?
I can't BELIEVE how may sites let you download or even simply WATCH/LISTEN to movies/music! & some of them are reputable companies. & the people in the entertainment industry say that they don't get their royalties, which I understand. I'd be upset, too. So with this, how can musicians & actors make money if people don't buy CD's & DVD's anymore because all they gotta do is look/listen on the computer?

    • ANSWER:
The RIAA and MPAA are greedy organizations who only work for the big corporations, not the artists themselves. Free websites are usually ad supported, which does return revenues to the companies who hold all the copyrights. Again, this does little for the artists. How legal a site is cannot be determined by the average user, but if you did not pay for it, even if the website is listed on Google without any copyright violation notices, I would not assume the download is legal. In these times, it is best to only download what you have paid for. This does not apply to streaming content over the Internet, where you cannot be sued if you don't actually download anything to your computer.

  43. QUESTION:
Do you know of where I can download movies legally from the internet for free?

I would like to download gothika but other movies will do if I can't get hold of gothika.

    • ANSWER:
This is the only place I know of that is legal and free to download from:

      http://archive.org/details/feature_films

There are a few places you can go to stream movies free (and legally):

      http://www.hulu.com
      http://www.crackle.com

Youtube used to offer a large number of free (recent & old) movies, too, but they seem to try and hide them from people, even though they're legally available to watch so far as I can tell:

      http://www.youtube.com/movies

I last watched a movie on Youtube about 3 months ago.

If you don't have a USA ip address - find a free VPN service, like VPNbook or there's others, to get a US IP to watch these shows. Maybe even a free proxy server would work like the one mentioned here:

      http://premiumaccount.info/1401/free-proxy-tool/

I watch UK TV semi-frequently from the US, but I've never tried watching full movies from UK sites.

  44. QUESTION:
Is there a legal website where you can pay to download movies and music?
Hi, I was wondering if there was a website where you have unlimited access to download movies and music which was legal. I don't mind paying and it would be good if you only had to pay a certain amount per month or year. I know it's illegal to not pay and download movies but is there a site where you can pay and download? Thanks everyone so much! 😀

    • ANSWER:
On iTunes you can pay a fee to either buy or rent movies and Tv Shows (and ofcourse, music)

With a Lovefilm subscription, you pay a fee to rent dvd's and can also stream films online with their higher end packages.

  45. QUESTION:
I just bought a usb stick today and want to watch stuff from it on my tv, how do I do it?
I have an LG tv but the manual for it is lost or already thrown out so I don't know what files will work on the tv. I copied some videos from youtube using DVDVideoSoft Free Studio and those files are MPEG-4 Movie. The usb stick is TDK make and 16GB. I don't know what else information to add.

When I get it working and plug my usb into the back of my tv, does it automatically come up or do I have to search for it first by using the av button? I basically know nothing about computers. I seen some people in work with shows on their usb. I was told utorrent is a good place to get stuff, so if you want as an extra question, where is good to download shows and movies? If you really want cause I need cause I know next to nothing about this stuff, how exactly does downloading shows and movies from these sites work, what exactly do I press step-by-step? Thank you!
AVDADDY you include us with your own opinion, does it make you feel more comfortable, more safe. I think working in a boring job to pay for this stuff is a steal. If you are an honest worker working in one of these industries I still think it is no measure of health to adjust yourself to a corrupt system like advertising for example. Come down off your high horse, open your eyes and talk to me, we can make sense.

    • ANSWER:
The first thing to do is to download the Owner's Manual for your particular TV from LG using the first link I've posted below. Often the USB port on TV's can access pictures (jpg files) on a flash drive but not much else.

I use a Western Digital TV Live (or TV Live +) media player to play a wide variety of files that are stored in various computer formats. it has a pair of USB inputs that can handle either flash drives or external hard drives and a Ethernet port for streaming. You'll want the plus version for paid subscription streaming content such as Netflix. It comes with a remote and menus that are easy to navigate and plenty of online support. Other similar media players exist such as the Roku.

If you plan on downloading lots of files such as YouTube videos you'll find a download manager to be useful. I like one called JDownloader, which is free and open source. It can also reassemble multipart files from other sources.

You'll want to avoid torrents, especially if you are contemplating downloading copyrighted material, since you will in most cases also be uploading (seeding) copyrighted material. Such activities are illegal in many parts of the world.

Many filehosting sites exist that will allow anyone to upload a file on the company servers and allow uploaders to share it with whoever they choose to give the download link to. They have legitimate uses such as sharing family pictures with friends and family. They are also misused for other purposes. Filehosting sites are required to remove infringing files if they receive notification from a copyright holder that a file is not supposed to be there. As long as a filehosting site complies with takedown requests, they do not have to self police for possibly infringing files.

There are various forums, blogs and link aggregation sites where links to files that have been left on the hosting sites are discussed or listed. Such discussion sites do not themselves host any files that might be deemed illegal. Sites like ddlvalley.eu, rlsbb.com, and avaxhome.ws are a few examples. Once you start finding links to files, you can find other discussion sites by using parts of those links as a search term.

Legal content that is in the public domain can often be found on archive.org.
