    • ANSWER:
There are a few hundred thousand apps available for download from Google’s official Android Market. But not every Android device can access the Market, and not every app is available from Google’s app superstore.

Gameloft, for instance, has a reputation for releasing highly polished (if not exactly original) games without always going through the Android Market. Other developers, such as Grooveshark, have been booted from the Market but continue to offer apps for Android users, because unlike iOS, Windows Phone 7, and some other mobile platforms, Android allows users to install apps that aren’t downloaded from the official Market.

Here are 17 places to find free and paid apps without Google’s help. The list is arranged alphabetically, but not all of these app stores are created equal. Look for the asterisk next to the name to find Mobiputing’s favorites.

Note that Appbrain, Cyrket, AndroLib and other third party App directories are not included in this list. Those all require you to download apps through the Android Market. The following app stores are all designed to let you download and install apps directly. I’ve also left out a handful of app stores that are exclusive to a specific wireless carrier or a line of phones or tablets.

      * Amazon Appstore

The Amazon Appstore is probably the highest profile alternative to the Google Android Market. Amazon has a well-organized app store which you can navigate on the web or using a mobile app. Once you install the app on your device you can also make purchases or add free apps to your cart using a web browser and simply open the app on your mobile device to view a list of apps available for download

    • ANSWER:
I'm a little surprised to hear that you guys don't have Movies. We have it here in Australia (although we still don't have TV Shows) but I'd expect you guys to have this as well.

The possible reasons why Google hasn't launched Play Movies is probably due to licensing or UK laws which can delay the launch. You could get it pretty soon or you might have to wait a while. Although, it would be better to just wait. The library isn't really that big at the moment and by the time it launches in the UK, there would be a larger variety of stuff.

  10. QUESTION:
How to go about getting free books for Google nexus?
I just got a nexus s7 as a gift and put music and movies and things on it, but I also wanted to get some books and possibly magazines for the recipient to read. I know magazines would be harder. What is the best option for this? Torrenting? Apps from Google play store? Would I need something to read different types of book files? Thanks for the help

BTW I don't want to root because frankly I wouldn't know how to and feel cars though it would take too much time with Christmas creeping up. Also the recipient is slightly older and isn't the best with technology... This tablet will knock his socks off...

    • ANSWER:
Use the public library. Some have bought ebook rights.

Torrenting is sharing with others. And if the author has not agreed to give the book, music, or movies away for free--it is breaking the copyright laws. The person that sent the files can earn jail time and fines of up to 0,000 per item.

  11. QUESTION:
What is available from Google Play in Europe?
I'm thinking about buying a Nexus 7, but I have no idea what Google Play features are available (like books, movies, ...) in Europe. I live in Luxembourg. Does anyone know?

    • ANSWER:
      Google is your friend.

      https://play.google.com/store

Browse the site. From what I've seen there is a multitude of applications thats impossible to consume. The availability of applications for Android phones in the European Union is probably the last of my worries.

    • ANSWER:
Books out of copyright are legal. Books that the public library paid for ebook rights are legal.

If the book is in copyright, the author has to AGREE to give it to you for free. Torrents is peer sharing which is not legal because the author hasn't agreed. If the author agrees, it is on the creative commons website or a publisher website.

How do you feed a DVD player to play on several of your TV's at the same time?
Say I want to have one movie play on several of my own TV's using a DVD player, kind of like what BestBuy does...
    Please provide how-to details.

    • ANSWER:
You MUST BUY a video Distribution Amplifier to drive MORE than one TV set....if you don't, and you SPLIT the signal, all the pictures will be so dark and off-color that NONE of the TVs will look good....

So....You buy one. Then you connect the DVD's Video output to the Distribution Amp's Video IN....

Then you connect EACH TV's Video IN to the OUTPUTs on the Distribution AMP.
And if you need more outputs you connect ONE output on the 1st amp to the input on the 2nd amp....

      Google "Video Distribution Amp"

As for the sound, you have a choice.....ONE Audio amp or one Audio Distribution amp laid out in the same manner as the Video Distribution amp.

Or you might find combination units too....

  23. QUESTION:
How do I put videos not purchased from google play on my android device?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, and I have no idea how to put movies on it. I have some downloaded, which I could see if you couldn't put itunes movies on it, but what about digital copies and such that come with blu rays? Anyone?

    • ANSWER:
first, you need a good player which will support a variety of formats (including bluray), so in google play, download "MX player", after downloading it will ask for some codec pack which will redirect back to google play: download it, next, you need a USB cable and connect it to your computer, once you have access to the device, copy your movies you've got and put them anywhere on your Android device. disconnect it, go into "MX player", click the "reload" icon and the movies will appear. HOWEVER, immediately after you choose a movie in the top right corner it says: H/W click it, and choose S/W (software decoder) if you don't do this then most of the movies won't work.

if you don't have a USB cable then you need to download "airdroid" from google play to transfer files "wirelessly", and it's easy to use just follow the instructions.

For console games, you can rig up a camcorder and hit record while youre playing ( the hard way ) or simply set your VCR to your gaming source ( channel 3, separate output, whatever ) and trun it on ( with a tape in ). Also, you might be able to use like, DVR or TiVo. Not sure about that though. Hope this helps ( a little )

  36. QUESTION:
What is the difference between the new Play Store and the Android Market?
What is the difference between the new Play Store and the Android Market? Some phones have Android Market and some have Play Store. Will there be any loss of apps and games? Do I have to pay anything in either? I mean ( apart from paid apps ) will I have to pay any additional charges to gain access to:-
    1. Android Market?
    2. Or, if Android Market is not there on my smartphone, Play Store?

    Thanking you,
    Yours sincerely,
    Cadence

They are both the same. Android Market was first app and game store. Now, Google Play is all-in-one entertainment hub with music, movies, books and apps on the web on your Android phone or tablet.

  37. QUESTION:
Is writing a screen play writing an entire movie start to finish including all lines, or just a short version?
I wanted to write a screen play (movie) but was wondering what the process involves. Do you write the entire movie with all character lines and environment detail? Or is it more of an outline? Just need some insight on what is expected and a little more info on how the process works. Thank you in advance for your help!

    • ANSWER:
Screenwriting is a difficult task for someone who has never done it because its not a technique taught in traditional schools. When I was looking for the right way to dive into screenwriting when I was in high school, the only help I got was from my "Screenwriting: For Dummies" book, which was a GREAT help, and also from various websites. Google magic, baby. :) The process involves writing the entire movie, start to finish, writing only what the viewer is s e e i n g. If you start writing about what they're feeling, you're headed for the gutter.

Oh, and don't even think about burying yourself waist deep in a screenplay until you've read one all the way through yourself. Go to DailyScript.com, click on "movie scripts" and select a movie (they're ordered A-Z) one that is particularly popular or written by an esteemed writer. A few good ones to read are Alfie, Forrest Gump, Batman, and The Patriot. They all give a few different styles of writing that can inspire you in your own endeavors.

Have fun and good luck with this! Screenwriting is a great craft and when done well, can blow your mind!!!! :)

  41. QUESTION:
How do you rent a movie from the android market?
I saw movies for rent on the android market. Do you need wifi to watch them? How long is the rental? And how does it work on general?

    • ANSWER:
first off why would you want to rent a movie from android that cost a few bucks to watch a movie on your tiny screen why not try netflix (if your phones supported) also you can go to websites like www.ch131.com and watch movies off your phone there. now as for android market you need to have your debt card linked to your account (if you ever paid for an app then this step should be done) then you find the movie u want to rent (before i forget to do this you need the newest version of the android market if it isnt on your phone yet this is all pointless if you want it on your phone you need to side load the APK file to your phone (thats what i had to do) just google new android market apk and find it. then you can find your movie click on it then click on the price tag (should be a blue button) then click accept and pay. now after all that you can choose to stream it or choose to download it to your phone and view without using wifi or 3G/4G but you only get i think 24hours to watch the movie and im pretty sure thats 24hours from the time you press play not from the time you download it that dont mean you can have the movie forever till you click play there is going to be a time limit for that. i no its not the best answer but i tried

How do i save old home movies on my computer?
I have never done this before. I am wanting to include some old home movies, on a slide show that I am doing for a friends wedding. The movies I want to include are old home movies that have been transfered from VHS to DVD. Problem is how does one save from the DVD onto their computer. Or does anyone know how I would transfer the home movie from the VHS tape onto my computer. What kind of VCR would I need to use. Thanks for any and all of you help. I really appreciate it a lot.

    • ANSWER:
The first way is to download a free, legal program called handbrake. You cam use it to rip non copywrite protected DVDs and can save them in any format.

The second way is from VCR to pc. There are special cards made (google pinnacle studios). That add plugs to the back of the pc to plug the VCR into. then you play the video while the program that came with the pc card records it. You can then save to whatever format you want.

  45. QUESTION:
I am considering buying an Aiptek AHD 300 Camcorder is it a good choice and will play on facebook?
I found it frustrating that windows movie maker will not play on facebook so will i be able to edit with the camcorder or will I need other editng software and finally please dont say buy a Mac?

    • ANSWER:
      Take one at a time.

      1) The videos you have in MovieMaker file format... under "Save As..." save the open video project file in a format the upload sites (FaceBook, YouTube, Vimeo, Yahoo, Google, whatever) will deal with - there are a bunch, but most common are WMV, AVI and MP4. Once that file format is changed, upload away. There are some other limitations - file size and video length - they vary by site.

      2) Is the Aiptek AHD 300 Camcorder is it a good choice for what? It is a low-end consumer grade camera/video camcorder that happens to take highly compressed video. Small lenses and imaging chips will result in poor low-light behavior. If you use ANY camcer/camcorder within it expected use range, it will be fine. Step outside the range and expect problems. You will need to convert the video using StreamClip or HandBrake
      http://www.squared5.com/
      http://handbrake.fr/
to get the video into a format MovieMaker can deal with (AVI or WMV, among others). There are MANY other converters.

  48. QUESTION:
What movies look good to go see tonight?
I don't have television at home so have no idea what's being advertised in the movies. We are in our 40's. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Depending on where you live, go to www.cineplex.com or to yahoo movies. You can even google in current movies playing and you will get a theatre near you.

It depends on what genre you like. If you are looking for a romantic comedy or action movie?
I see a different movie at least once a week in theatres so here our my recommendations:

1.Due Date was really funny but in gross kind of way (one scene where the guy jacks off in his car funny)
      2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was really good too, but if you havent seen any of the previous ones you might get bit lost? It has everything you need though, action, drama, romance etc.
      3. Megamind was a cute movie, but it was a bit too predictable and sappy. Its better to go to it if you liked movies like Disney's UP
      4. Paranormal Activity was scary, but its a bit like the Blair Witch project, particularly when it comes to the filming style and end.
      5. Burlesque and Tangled are the ones I want to see next. Tangled is Disney's take on Rapunzel (dont know how to spell it), its supposed to be really good. And Burlesque has Cher and Christina Aguilera...even if the acting sucks Im sure the music will be good.
      Hope that helps!
