New Film Hollywood 2012

Frequently Asked Questions

What Film Should Win the Best Picture at the 2012 Oscars?
I am film major student and am very much into the oscars. This year has been a great year for film but I believe alot of the buzz is going in more of a political way than a talent way. I chose 3 actors and 3 actresses that I believed were the best of 2011 and only 2 (total) were nominated. I am asking people for their personal opinion (not political) of which film should win best picture?

    What do you say?

My pick goes to Tree of Life.

    • ANSWER:
I grade from * to **** and here's my rundown of the nominees:

The Artist **** A black & white and almost entirely silent movie that is one of the most fun of the year.

The Descendants **** Another first-rate dramedy by the director of Sideways and About Schmidt.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close **½ The kid's good, but the movie has a dumb plot.

The Help *** One of the fan favorites, a good drama, but not Driving Miss Daisy good.

Hugo **** Wonderfully imaginative, excellent entertainment, great use of 3D.

Midnight in Paris ***½ One of Woody Allen's best recent dramedies.

Moneyball **** A sports movie that works just as well for fans as non-fans. Excellent.

Tree of Life **** Slow-moving for some, an epic not unlike 2001: A Space Odyssey for the rest of us.

War Horse **** Excellent Spielberg epic that pays homage to film techniques of the past.

I think Extremely Loud is the only movie that doesn't really belong there. I would have liked to see Bridesmaids or Take Shelter or Drive in its place.

The Artist will win Best Picture and probably take Supporting Actress and two other categories as well. It's a fun movie for anyone and it celebrates Hollywood. That's a double-whammy right there, so it's going to win the big prize although watch out for either Scorsese or Malick to win Best Director.

I think Jean DuJardin may win Best Actor; Christopher Plummer for Supporting Actor.

Meryl Streep looks like she'll win her 3rd in the Actress category.

A Separation will win for Foreign Film, and it will deserve it. The Iranian film is one of the best of the late 2011 entries.

what elements determine a film as being classified as a Typical Hollywood film?
What is a Hollywood movie. How is it really different from a documentary or a experimental film? I've seen some of them that actually use actors in it besides regular people.

    • ANSWER:
There's a pretty clear "hero" formula for the "typical Hollywood film" - particularly action/adventure movies, science fiction, dramas, and even (believe it or not) comedies and romantic comedies. The formula goes like this:

      1) Main character has a tragic flaw. Some issue or barrier they're dealing with.
      2) A crisis or opportunity develops - resulting in a quest
      3) There's a car chase or something like that. It involves a pursuit & race.
      4) Usually the hero(es) must push through darkness, descend into the earth or sea, or go into foreign/unfamiliar territory.
      5) A climactic confrontation happens, where the hero must overcome or conquer their flaw for the greater good (this usually involves a sacrifice of some kind)
      6) The hero succeeds, gets the girl/guy/new companion, happy ending, roll the credits

This formula goes all the way back to some of the earliest mythology & fiction (Jonah and the Whale, Beowulf, The Odyssey, etc.) To give some examples of how it applies to Hollywood movies today, look at any Indiana Jones movie. Indy is afraid of snakes, has no spiritual faith, and he's awful at personal relationships (1st movie; ex-girlfriend. 2nd movie; girlfriend. 3rd movie; his father. 4th movie; his own son.) A new artifact crisis happens, there's all kinds of chases, and Indy has to go into caves/tombs/etc. He faces his fears, sacrifices his "prize" (keeping the object/artifact), and overcomes his relationship issues. The village/country/world is saved, happy ending, roll the credits.

Pick any big Hollywood movie and you'll see the formula; Star Wars? Yup. Iron Man? Yup. District 9, Gran Torino, Shrek? Yup. Halloween, Alien, 2012, or Poseidon? Yup. It's A Wonderful Life, Jaws, ET, Something About Mary, Bridget Jones' Diary, Night at the Museum, American Pie, Knocked Up, The Hangover... you'll see the pattern is there almost everywhere you look.

James Campbell called this pattern the "monomyth" and wrote about it in a book called "The Hero With A Thousand Faces." It's a really eye-opening examination of classic stories & literature, and how the model continues today in modern Hollywood films & entertainment.

So when The Rock leaves for Hollywood in April, how will WWE deal with drop in ratings?
The Rock is expected to return filming movies (I think about 3 this year) after WM29, how will WWE cope with loss in viewership?

Afterall, The Rock is the reason people watched Royal Rumble and will watch Elimination Chamber tonight and WM29. Taking Rocky out of the equation leaves WWE back to pre-Royal Rumble ratings, in other words very low ratings.

BTW, The Rock has confirmed that he will be working WM30, so he will be absent for a year.
@CM Punk, keep telling yourself that, CM Punk couldn't even sell out an auditorium.

    • ANSWER:
He won't be gone a year. It's widely reported that Rock told WWE he's up to compete at SummerSlam this year, and WWE has reportedly discussed having Rock vs. Lesnar at that PPV. He's apparently only filming one movie between WM29 and SummerSlam, so he can return a month or so before SS to set up a match.

And I'd just like to point out, in reference to your "additional details" - Do you know which 2012 PPV had the worst buyrate? TLC, the only PPV in which CM Punk did not appear.

What are Hollywood films so expensive?
I mean seriously! Most Amercain film cost normally over 100 million to make. I understand if it's a big action with loads of special effects and everything like 2012 & Transformers but films like Rush Hour 3 and Toys Story 3 have like over 150 million budget.

I see foreign films with less than 10 million budget with 5x more action, explosion and famous actors (Like House Of Flying Daggers)

What do they spend all the stuff on?

    • ANSWER:
A lot of the budget is spend on the actor's salary.

Is the Batman film part of the Liberal Hollywood agenda to bring down Romney?
Rush Limbaugh noticed that the baddy in the film is called 'Bain'. Mitt Romney ran a company called Bain... conspiracy?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, two decades ago, Obama conspired with the comic book writer to create an evil character named Bane to attack Mitt Romney because he secretly knew that he would be president a decade later and be competing against Mitt in 2012. Right. Makes total sense.

Is the Haitian earthquake a sign of the sun affecting the earth's core?
I watched the film "knowing" last night-it's a possibility isn't it?

    • ANSWER:
No. Earthquakes are caused by the shifting of the Earth's crust, and they have absolutely nothing to do with the sun. You should not believe a word those stupid doomsday films tell you (I'm talking about Knowing, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and the like). It's all made-up Hollywood bullcrap. Once again, earthquakes ARE NOT caused by the sun in ANY WAY.

What are your top five best movies of 2012?
This year we acutally has good films to watch. From avengers to dark knight rises to skyfall to the hobbit etc etc and Hollywood has recieve the most amount of money in ticket sales for the first time in years even though one ticket is nearly ! Mine are the avengers dark knight rises hunger games skyfall and the hobbit what about yours?

    • ANSWER:
DARK KNIGHT RISES, Lawless!, The Hobbit, Project X (I know it's a stupid movie but it was funny), Killing Them Softly, Cabin In the Woods (unique in a way)

If I would've seen Anna Karenina I'm sure it would've been on my list as well but it didn't come out in my town.. It seems like it's a masterpiece

Why do disaster films always have an estranged couple finally getting along?
    2012, Unstoppable, Armageddon, Independence Day

They all feature divorced couples who are finally brought together in love and marriage by the disaster.

    Typical Hollywood cliche.

    • ANSWER:
Because conflict is irrelevant when the end has come.

Can a muslim woman become a professional actress with a hijab?
A girl in my acting class wants to become an actress but she is muslim and has a hijab and said she isn't going to take it off for films or stage productions or do any sensual or suggestive for films or plays. I told her that it's pretty much impossible to find a job if she's going to do that but she vows that she will get jobs and auditions. Is it possible or is she just wasting her time.

    • ANSWER:
She is quite right. actually there are hundreds of Hijabi actresses.
But still it depends where she would like to work and with which directors. if she is thinking about Hollywood ,Bollywood,.. then there isn't much hope.

      an example is here:
      Leila Hatami:
Best Actress (tied) for Deserted Station, from 25th Montreal Film Festival, 2002
Best Actress for Nader and Simin, a separation, from Berlin Film Festival (with Sareh Bayat and Sarina Farhadi), 2011
Best Actress for The Last Step, from Karlovy Vary IFF film festival, 2012

and the Movie "A separation" won the Oscar, too

It just was an small example. so you see everything is possible. and Your friend is very respectful for persist on what she like.

Why are movie sequels the only type of movies were seeing lately?
God, if I could make a list of them I'd faint probably lol. Why are the majority of movies recently almost all been sequels? Of course we have some original new ideas but there minor compared to the reboots, uneccesary sequels ect.

Is this because of new young directirs, have they ran out if ideas and going the easy way? What's up with 2012 eh.

    • ANSWER:
      You are SO RIGHT.
Hollywood is about MONEY $$$$$. The studios are all run by money men whose only goal is too make money. Rather than look for new, interesting scripts -they all feel safer re-making something that's been done before and made LOTS of money. They figure if they continue making sequels and re-makes they are assured the money will pour in just like it did for the original film. They have no integrity and no creativity.
There are thousands of interesting scripts floating around Hollywood that no studio will ever bother to read. It's a shame.
The other thing we have to face realistically is movies are made for teens and 20-somethings. They don't have the greatest taste in movies. Their main interests are vampires, werewolves, car chases, bloody chainsaws, exploding heads and hot babes in bikini's. Kids have NO interest in something that might make them think. If they actually had any intelligence they wouldn't be wasting time on Facebook and Twitter.

When I was in college I took a film appreciation course. I that we were going to see cool movies. We DID see cool movies, but they were all foreign films where you had to read subtitles. I never thought I'd go for it but I fell in love with foreign film. I'm smart,I can read and I don't mind reading. Foreign films are (generally) so much better than American made formula movies. Interesting stories that are not reduced to the dumbest dialogue possible. There are great foreign films in every genre-from Sci Fi and horror to great, hard hitting dramas. No matter what kind of films you like there is something there for you to enjoy.
Lazy people always give the excuse-I don't want to read subtitles. I want to be entertained. Their loss.
The bottom line is as long as kids go to see a Twilight movie 5 or 6 times in the theater Hollywood will keep churning out the same crap over and over. Sadly, there is no chance that kids will smarten up and demand BETTER movies.

When do pre-sale tickets go on sale for the Dark Knight Rises?
I want to buy pre-sale tickets for the Dark Knight Rises on July 20th 2012 (The day that it opens). If it varies by theater can you please tell me how I can figure out when they go on sale.

    • ANSWER:
GOTHAM -- Possibly the most anticipated movie of 2012, "The Dark Knight Rises," doesn't open until July, but tickets are already selling out.

Tickets selling months in advance for big films is nothing new, but as Cinema explains, the way "The Dark Knight Rises" tickets went on sale is very different.

How early would you start buying tix to "The Dark Knight Rises"?
      1. Today
      2. February
      3. March
      4. April
      5. May
      6. June
      7. After it opens
      8. Never
"Usually when tickets for a huge movie go on sale at online outlets like Fandango, we get a splashy press release from the company or the studio itself, trying to rally the troops to boost those ticket sale numbers months before the movie even opens," wrote Katey Rich of Cinema Blend. "It happened just two days ago, when we got a press release telling us the exact date "Hunger Games" tickets will go on sale in February. And yet you can now buy tickets for the year's most anticipated movie, and no one made any fanfare about it."

/ reported that Fandango quietly started selling midnight tickets in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. But why keep it so low key? The Hollywood Reporter did some digging and found out why these midnight sales were so hushed.

"As it happened, some AMC theater managers in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco decided to poll the fanboys in attendance (of a "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" IMAX pre-screening) on who was interested in buying midnight tickets to see the Batman pic on July 19. Not surprisingly, the tickets sold out in an instant.

why does american movies premier over seas before they do in the US?
It can take days or even weeks for a hollywood movie to premier in america while its all over Europe. Lets take MIB3 for example its been in theatrr in france. This only apply for the big buggets movies not the low buggets one's. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
The simple answer is money. So called American blockbuster movies have been making more money worldwide than they have been domestically. While this seems intuitive (there are obviously more people worldwide than there are in America) it is really only a recent occurrence. A big blockbuster film can see 2 even 3 times more money grossed outside the United States.

Here is a story on the very subject:

Why is the December 21st 2012 myth becoming so popular?
Ive actually been hearing about it for quite a few years now. I didn't look much up about it till a couple years ago. and it didn't even seem as popular then. Now everybody is hearing about it to the point where they are making a movie about it. wow.

I wonder how freaked out this hoax is gonna make people get as time gets closer to 2012.

    • ANSWER:
      Its a shared social myth.

Most people aren't willing to do any actual research of their own, and so many young people rely on YouTube (or worse, text messages from their equally-uninformed friends). So a myth that sounds like it might be true (scientific words like "planetary alignment" or "rogue planet" or "magnetic reversal") is suddenly the new fad.

The hype didn't really start until the predictions of Lieder & Co. of 2003 failed and they "revised" the date.
But a prediction by aliens through a brain implant about an unknown planet didn't seem that powerful anymore, so by glomming onto the date the Mayan Long Count calendar clicks over to the next cycle you suddenly have something ("ancient Mayan religious prediction" sounds good).
Add a bunch of scientific terms (remember, no one understands science much anymore) and you have the makings of a grand hoax.

Now - add in Hollywood's desire to make money. Independance Day and The Day After Tomorrow were big box office (bad science, but again no one knows that). So another film about the ultimate end of the world logically comes next.
Add in Sony's complete lack of social conscience (their IHC site and commercials were criminal negligence in my mind), and you have a complex myth complete with prophets, disciples, zealots, and the great congregation of the uneducated public.

The movie is coming out now, because even the best marketing scheme has a natural peak. If they waited until closer to 2012, the peak will have passed and it will seem like old news.
Right now, its still far enough in the future to be "exciting" yet close enough to be frightening.
Perfect combination to attract people that are so disconnected from other humans as the current "tech" generation.

Where can I see original movie costumes on display?
Specifically from the film The Help. Does anyone know if the costumes are on display anywhere? I'm going to Hollywood this summer and I'd love to see them!

    • ANSWER:
I've got good news and bad news.

The good news is that I know exactly where you can see them, right now. They're on display at the Fashion Institute of Design museum, in downtown Los Angeles, along with costumes from other Oscar-nominated films such as "The Artist" and "Hugo". For details, see:

Unfortunately, the bad news is that the exhibit will only be open for another five weeks, until April 28th.

They do this every year (for the Oscars), from Feb to April, but I believe the costumes change each year.

Can there ever be a solar flare That can wipe out Humanity?
Is it possible for a solar flare to be disaterous as the one at the ending of the film Knowing?

    • ANSWER:
★ This is what the REAL LIFE scientists at NASA have to say about it.

There is no reputable scientist that will say or agree that there is any 'proof' at any of all this doomsday junk. Name even one. You can't because there are none. No Mayan prediction. No Nostradamus prediction. No enormous solar flare. No pole shift. No meteor impact. No Galactic alignment. No planet x. No planet Nibiru. "They" are not building underground bunkers. Nothing at all will happen.

What you saw was a commercial for a Hollywood movie. The producers want you to go to their movie so they can have your money in their pockets. There is no superstition involved. There is no ancient prophecy. The only thing that motivates this entire hoax, mass fear among teens, and lack of common sense, is Greed. Pure greed. It's the producer's job to make it look as real as they can.

Why would Hollywood not make a big budget Left Behind movie?
Hollywood exploits the paranoia surrounding 2012 by making a movie based on the Mayan calendar and a host of other prophecies. Hollywood makes movies based on Dan Brown's conspiracy theories. With those types of movies being released, I wonder why Hollywood never jumped onto the Left Behind series of books and started making big budget films. The CGI that could be used in those movies to show the destruction describes in the books would be amazing...more so than any disaster movie, excluding 2012.

    • ANSWER:
Well, I am sure you already know this but they did make movies based on "Left Behind" starring Kirk Cameron. I don't think very many directors in Hollywood would have the guts to get their hands on that script. I wish they would not of done a cheesy, made for tv rendition and someone like Mel Gibson could of done it right and done it big.

      It's never too late though.

Why are the Hollywood produces who sell movies to dating teenagers remaking the same action movies over and?
over and over and over again? ANOTHER Spider-Man out from Sony's Columbia Pictures in 2012. ANOTHER one!

it's about money...if it works don't change it

Selena Gomez's story to fame: { In 2004, Gomez was discovered by the Disney Channel in a USA-wide scouting. Gomez appeared as a guest star on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and had a guest appearance – that later turned into a another role – on Hannah Montana from seasons two to three. Gomez previously taped two different pilots that were spin-offs to two previous Disney series. The first one, "What's Stevie Thinking?", was the spin-off to Lizzie McGuire. Gomez played Stevie Sanchez, Miranda Sanchez's little sister. The other show was titled "Arwin!", the spin-off to The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, in which she played Alexa. Neither series was picked up.
      In early 2007, Gomez was cast in the Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place" as one of the three main characters, Alex Russo. The show premiered to an audience of 5.9 million, becoming a hit. Many news outlets began dubbing Gomez the next 'Miley Cyrus' causing some controversy and a reported 'feud'. Gomez clarified that there was no feud and that she was flattered by the comparison, saying: "It's a little overwhelming, but I think really, it's a compliment. She's obviously extremely successful, and I think she's a wonderful performer ... So being compared to her, I was very, very flattered." Gomez recorded four songs, one of which was a cover, for the Wizards of Waverly Place soundtrack, only one single ("Magic") from the album was released. In 2008, Gomez recorded a cover of "Cruella de Vil"—which included a music video—for the compilation album DisneyMania 6. Gomez also recorded "Fly to Your Heart" for the 2008 animated film Tinker Bell. In July 2008, before Gomez' sixteenth birthday, she signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records, a music label owned by Disney. In May, of the same year, Gomez was featured, with Forever the Sickest Kids, on a duet version of the non-album song "Whoa Oh!". The same year Gomez appeared in Another Cinderella Story, the direct-to-DVD sequel to the 2004 Hilary Duff film, opposite Drew Seeley. She also had a minor voiceover role as one the Mayor's ninety-six daughters in Horton Hears a Who! which released in March of that year. In April, Lacey Rose, of Forbes ranked Gomez as being fifth on their "Eight Hot Kid Stars To Watch" list; and Rose described Gomez as having been "a multi-talented teen". }

Ariana Grande's story to fame: { In her early years, she has been a soloist with various symphonies including South Florida’s Philharmonic, Pops and Symphonia Orchestras, and has had repeated appearances singing at NYC’s own Birdland. Ariana performed the National Anthem for the first live Fox Sports broadcast of the Anthem for the Florida Panther’s hockey league at age eight, her first National TV performance.
In 2010, she created the original role of Miriam in the reading of the new musical, Cuba Libre, written and produced by Desmond Child.
      Grande played the character Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television show Victorious, which premiered in March 2010. Grande was also featured in Dream Magazine as the cover girl for the August 2011 issue. In 2011, Ariana voiced an animated fairy, Princess Diaspro, on the Nickelodeon series, Winx Club. Grande also made appearances as a panelist on Figure It Out. Grande starred as Snow White along with Charlene Tilton and Neil Patrick Harris in the Pasadena Playhouse's production of A Snow White Christmas from December 13–23, 2012. In 2012, Grande sang a duet with MIKA on the single version of his track Popular Song. }

As conservatives, what can we do to boycott the new anti-Romney movie, The Dark Knight Rises?
Rush is right! Hollywood is controlled by Godless demons and purveyors of smut and anti-Christian wickedness.

The latest Hollywood film, Batman 2: The Dark Night Rises, is really an anti-Mitt Romney film because the bad guy's name is Bain. Shall we protest in front of every major theater in America until it is no longer shown?

    • ANSWER:
Dress up as rich, society leading lords and ladies in your protest lines in front of theatres and IMAX halls -- offer people money who are standing in line to leave the Ticket Line at midnight tonight (Thursday July 19)

Protect the name of the Romney family -- remind people with whome you have influence to watch the London Olympics late July and early August 2012 so that the sport of Equestrian Dressage will be accorded very important status when Romney and Portman run for re-election during the Summer Games of 2016 (Rio, Argentina) . . .

What are some movies in which the Golden Gate Bridge gets destroyed?
Any and all titles please if you can remember.

    • ANSWER:
The bridge is damaged in these films:
      The Core
      X-Men: The Last Stand
      Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus
It Came from Beneath the Sea

Does "2012" show it being destroyed? I haven't seen that yet, but the disaster movies generally like showing monuments and landmarks being destroyed, including the Eiffel Tower and the Hollywood sign.

Also, that might happen in "10.5" (TV miniseries), in which California breaks off from the rest of the continent.

    • ANSWER:
"Absolutely Live" is the first live album released by American rock band The Doors in July 1970.

"Alive, She Cried" is the second live album by the American rock band The Doors; the title of the album is taken from a line in the song "When the Music's Over".

"Live at the Hollywood Bowl" is the third live album by the American rock band The Doors. It was recorded on July 5, 1968 but not released until 1987.

"In Concert" is the fourth ans last live double album, recorded by The Doors. The album's performances are culled from a variety of different concerts and releases. In Concert includes all the tracks from Absolutely Live (with all but one track appearing on disc one with the remaining track on disc two) and Alive, She Cried. The three remaining tracks come from An American Prayer, Live at the Hollywood Bowl and one previously unreleased.

Will there still be movies and books in the future, or no, since these industries are going broke?
Music is one thing, with itunes and such. The price of a ticket is soooooooo much, and people are stealing rather than paying. These industries are going broke, and these top edge movies won't be here if Hollywood goes out with no money :(

But movies are based off of a lot of books helping the author and the industry. With piracy, and the bankruptcy of the movie industry like hollywood, will there be no movies in the future? No more big films, with lots of effects or such, will that be gone?

    • ANSWER:
The movie industry is NOT going bankrupt. Quite the opposite. It is doing better business than ever. In 2012, Hollywood movies made billion (,835,000,000, to be exact), and that was only for actual ticket sales at US movie theatre box offices. That doesn't even count the international box office receipts for the same films (which is often more than the domestic US take.) And it doesn't count what the studios make for the DVD / Blu-Ray sales later (another billion or so), or for selling the TV rights later on, or Netflix streaming, or for all the toys, t-shirts and related merchandising sales associated with the movies.

      Hollywood is doing just fine.

Books, on the other hand, are in decline. At least physical books. More and more people are reading books in digital forms. Most major book store chains (like B. Dalton) have gone out of business, and the last remaining one, Barnes & Noble, is now closing a large number of their stores. They can't compete with Amazon and other online booksellers that don't have to pay rent on actual brick & mortar stores. Books will never disappear - people will always like to read - but they are changing from paper volumes to digital e-books and audio recordings.

Where did Sarah Palin and Romney get the idea of naming their sons crazy names?
Tagg Romney, the eldest of Mitt Romney's five sons, said on Wednesday that he wanted to “take a swing” at President Obama during Tuesday night’s debate,

    Bonus question:

Like father like son, Is Romney a chicken hawk?

= He was a chicken in the Vietnam War and got a Mormon exemption, now he is a hawk to go to war with Libya and Iran.

    • ANSWER:
Well, darling, Palin's kids' names seem to be very, very literal, based on where she was or what she liked when the kids were born (arguing a distinct lack of creativity and ability to think beyond the moment). Maybe it's the same with the Mittster - maybe Tag was the game Mittens was playing with Ann when she went into labor.

The Martian's rant made me laugh...with derision.

First, Obama wasn't eligible for any draft, since there was no draft of men his age, and has no "draft papers" to reveal. All he - in common with other men his age - ever had to do was register with Selective Service. So much for THAT bogus attempt at sliming.

Second, Mittens had multiple deferments, some of which were student deferments like Biden's. However, Mittens also got a “minister of religion or divinity student” deferment - one of the few given to Mormons (before the Mormon church, which actively supported the war, limited them). A lot of people had multiple deferments (again, like Biden), but they're honest about them. Mittens has lied repeatedly about his:

Third, Bollywood is the name of the center of the Indian film industry, located in Mumbai. I think the dimwit meant Hollywood.

Fourth, not all actors are liberals...not even all actors who name their kids weird names are liberals.

Ahh, the Martian... so full of fail.

Are there any American movies, where Russians are portrayed as good guys, or have a Russian guy as good guy?
I mean, c'mon! Russians are always villains!!!! I want to know, if there are any modern Hollywood movies, where Russians are good guys? (besides 2012)

    • ANSWER:
During World War II Russia was part of the Allied forces, so U.S. movies portrayed them in a positive light. These films would include:

      Song of Russia (1944)
      Days of Glory (1944)
      Mission to Moscow (1943)

Russians became stereotypical villains in American movies with the advent of the Cold War in the 1950s. However, this wasn't always the case by the 60s; case in point, the following movie:

The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966)

In the 80's, Cold War tensions were high again, but there were a couple of films with Russians as protagonists:

      2010 (1984)
      Moscow on the Hudson (1984)
      Red Heat (1988)

What's the definition of Hollywood movies?
I don't get why they refer it as Hollywood movies. When they say a film is a Hollywood movie, does it means it is filmed in Hollywood? or is Hollywood actually a studio?

    Hope someone can enlighten me!

    • ANSWER:
Physically, 'Hollywood' - as you know - is a name collectively given to the movie studio gaints like 'Warner Bros.' , 'Universal' , 'Paramount' etc...and hundreds of other smaller production houses located in Los Angeles - California. But, the word 'Hollywood' is used as a symbolic word, for certain (American) movies. Let me explain : -

Every country's culture reflects in its cinema. If you've seen French and Italian films, they make and produce more Art House related films. Which means more drama and experimental films.

Indian movie industry viz. Bollywood's mos of the films are musicals. They're loved by Indian audiences in India, and around the World. But international audiences, sometimes find it strange to relate with (though Slumdog Millionaire changed the strangeness).

Similarly when a person says that a particular film has more of a 'Hollywood' in a film, what he means to actually say is that 'american feeling' seen inside a movie. Let me give you example(s) : -

      1) Only America has oldest and majority of numbers of comics in the entire world. And so only Hollywood makes majority of Super-Hero films. And also, possibly only American produces most of the 'Action/Adventure' movies and 'Sci-Fi' found in entire world. (Although Bollywood produces largest number of movies in a year).

      2) Second comes the 'American Humor'. If you've seen films like Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, American Pie, Transformers, Avengers, Iron Man 2, etc...they all have these cheesy and witty dialogues which makes us laugh. Those dialogues itself reflects the 'American Culture' in such movies. You must have often heard the word 'COOL' whenever you watch a certain American movie. This is its how its 'Humor' is, viz. 'COOL' and found in almost its every film. For example : -

In a recent movie 'Drive' staring Ryan Gosling, there is a scene in which he has to shake hands with the villain of the film.

In the scene Ryan's hands are dirty because he is a Race Driver and a mechanic, so when the villain approaches to shake hands, Ryan says : -

      "My Hands are dirty"

But to these the villain - who is a Crime Lord also replies to him "So are mine"

      Take another example : -

In the movie 'Avengers (2012)' there is a scene in which Tony Stark and Captain America are quarreling with each other : -

      Captain America says : - "It's all about style isn't it...Mr. Stark..."

To this Tony replies to him : - "Among all people sitting in this room who is a) Wearing a Spangly Outfit and B) Is not Fearsome..."

To this quarrel, Dr. Banner (Hulk) who is sitting right next announces : - "Steve...." viz. Captain America's name.

Such witty one-liner dialogues you can find only in american movies, because 'American Culture' is like that.

      3) Is the heavy use of soundtracks. Most of the Hollywood films make heavy use of background music then films in any other country. Also, you can fell that 'Rock N' Roll' music in many of the background music. For example here are some good soundtracks from good films. You'd get an Idea : -

      4) Most of the Hollywood movies are very quick, practical and to the point. There are many 'dramas' made in Hollywood also which have a slower pace, but in general and overall, the practicality can be seen in Hollywood movies, viz. again seen in American culture.

American English also, if you know, is more direct, more reasonable and more informal, then British English viz. is more sophisticated. For example : -

A British man wants to buy a ticket to go from London to Chicago. Then when he goes to buy the ticket he will say : - "Can you please give me the ticket to the City of Chicago."

While if an American wants to buy the same ticket he would say : - "To Chicago...economy person...please..."

This is what makes American Language different, and which can be seen in its movies viz. why the word 'Hollywood' is attached to it.

      5) In American movies, you get that 'patriotic feeling' at some point, in the movie, throughout various subjects like its actors' dialogues, the music of the film, or its story. Which only 'Hollywood' can offer. For example : -

      Here is a soundtrack from a well-known American game 'Commandos' : -

It is a soundtrack of a game, but such soundtracks are found in many American drama/action movies also, which feels patriotic. It makes America distinct.

These is all, Why the word 'Hollywood' is used for such films made and produced in U.S.

I hope I've enlightened you about Hollywood.

The movie 2012 is just a big budget Hollywood disaster movie. They are basically playing into the fear some people have over the possibility of 2012. I actually saw the movie the other day and I can tell you it only has the slightest relevance to real science. They just use it as a canvas to throw out every possible disaster movie cliche.

Mike Huckabee Is Even More Of A Religious Social Conservative Than George W. Bush?
Atleast George W. Bush never went around publicly criticizing unwed mothers. Mike Huckabee's mentality is still stuck in the 1950s.

Somebody with that mentality can't get elected president in 2012.

    • ANSWER:
Mike Huckabee had a terrible week. He was just pandering to the lowest common denominators of the social conservative wing of the GOP. It doesn't matter to him that Natalie is engaged, has a lucrative film career, is almost 30 years old and has a degree from Harvard. He saw a chance to take a cheap shot at "liberal Hollywood" and score points with the right wing moralists of his party. Thankfully, this transparent patronizing blew up in his face. The clumsy back pedalling that he has been doing since he made the comments is proof of that.

What happened to America being, "America, The Land of the Free and The Home of the Brave"?
Just a question I would like to hear some answers from after all of this chick fil a stuff and everything that is making america less free and what not...

    • ANSWER:
It has become the land of the super-wealthy, who are the only ones free enough to to be able to misuse their wealth by manipulating politics for their own benefit, and thus become even wealthier.

"The brave" exist only in Hollywood now, because it is only in films that anyone opposing this wealth controlled system that have a chance of winning.

But they both collude into making you wrongly believe that it is things like socialism, and fair distribution of wealth that are the dangers to your freedom !
The reality is that these things are actually the biggest dangers to their control over you !

You have been conned for so long now that too many of you now vehemently believe all the propaganda that you have been fed, and it's far too late to do anything about it.

      The Republicans are WRONG !
Lower taxation has NEVER benefited the majority, this has ALWAYS resulted in higher government debt, and lower standards of living for the average US citizen !
The rich have become far more wealthy and this is being paid for by the rest of you, and many future generations to come.
G W Bush cut taxes more than any other President in American history, while allowing military spending to spiral out of control.
The result of which Obama has inherited, along with the ongoing credit crisis which was caused by lack of governmental control and the greed of the financial institutions during the Bush administration.

Now the Republicans have the nerve to blame him for the economic woes of the US economy, and have blockaded parliament in order to force Obama to follow their own desired political policies, of even more tax cuts, and cutting the US deficit by only reducing government spending.

Look at the graph of US debt vs President 1929 / 2012 in the website below for proof.

Who would you choose for to play the characters in les miserables?

    Jean Valjean
    Éponine Thénardier
    Mr and Mrs. Thénardier
l'Évêque de Digne - Monsieur Myriel

    • ANSWER:
Jean Valjean - Liam Neeson; he was in the 1998 movie and he fits Valjean physically and acting-wise. (Valjean is supposed to be tall and reeeeeeeeallly strong)

Eponine - Evan Rachel Wood. She was set to play Eponine in the 2012 film but dropped out because she had a jaw accident. She looks like a more beautiful version of Eponine from the book. (Eponine is rugged, with messy hair. She's almost crazy about Marius. Literally)

Monsieur Thenardier - John C. Reilly or Danny DeVito. They could play the creepy side of Thenardier really well. (Javert is supposed to be shorter than his majestically tall and wide wife. And he's a villain, mean and nasty)

Cosette - Emmy Rossum (she looks like Cosette in the novel), Astrid Berges Frisbey (she's also a lot like Hugo's Cosette looks-wise), Alexis Bledel (she's maybe a little too old). (Remember, Cosette has brown hair in the book)

Javert - Javier Bardem (he looks like Hugo's Javert, with the flat nose and all) or Alan Rickman.

Monsieur Myriel - Any old Hollywood star in his 70s/80s with a very kind looking face and a pleasing, soothing speaking voice.

Enjolras - Someone really handsome, tall, blonde, with bright blue eyes and a strong personality.

Gavroche - Finn Burridge - he is Arthur in BBC's "The Paradise" and his character there is totally Gavroche.

Fantine - Rosamund Pike, or Romola Garai. Fantine is constantly called "the blonde" in the book and she's got blue eyes, and she's extremely beautiful. Both actresses fit that very well.

Why are Disaster Films that involve science so inaccurate?
2012, Knowing, The Core, The Happening, The 6th Day, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Mars Attacks!, Meteor, Volcano, Armageddon, Supernova, 10.5, 10.5 Apocalypse, Sunshine, the list goes on...

    • ANSWER:
Because Hollywood scriptwriters know next to nothing about science. Besides, if you make a mega budget film with lots of stuff blowing up the film is going to make money whether the stuff in it is possible or not, which is the main objective of disaster movies.

It annoys me more when they can't get the science right in supposedly serious science-fiction films.

    • ANSWER:
I've known about it for years. It's the year the Mayan Calender runs out. They just start again, like we start with January after December. Nothing to worry about, apart from the awful Hollywood films portraying our deaths.

What's with all this talk of the end of the world lately...?
Even in the movies now, too you have films like 2012 coming out.
I guess the "end of the world" is big money in the movie buisness.
Why, do you think, people are so obsessed with this concept?

    • ANSWER:
It is true that all over the world, a few type of people have been affected a panic and fear towards the rumour and belief regarding End of the world on December 21, 2012 at 11:11 A.M. This fear is been generated in people recently geared by the Hollywood box office Film, "2012, THE END OF WORLD".directed by Roland Emmerich, based on the fictitious book, 'Farewell Atlantis'. The filming began in Aug 2008 and released on Nov 13, 2009.
The film briefly references Mayanism, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, and the 2012 phenomenon in its portrayal of cataclysmic events unfolding in the year 2012. Because of solar flare bombardment the Earth's core begins heating up at an unprecedented rate, eventually causing crustal displacement. This results in an onslaught of Doomsday event scenarios plunging the world into chaos. Ranging from Los Angeles falling into the Pacific Ocean, the eruption of the Yellowstone National Park caldera, cataclysmic earthquakes wreaking havoc around the globe, and Megatsunamis surging across the Earth.
Before going throuhg this, it is needed to know what is mayanism. Mayans were some typical and indigenous people lived in part of Mexico, Central America and Gautimala. Rather to tell it as a civilization. They used a typical calendarr which is called Mayan Calendar. As per their calendar calculations, the date ends on 2012 and no more calander date is there. The Mayan Calendar is something profoundly different than just a system to mark off the passage of time. The Mayan Calendar is above all a prophetic calendar that may help us understand the past and foresee the future. It is a calendar of the Ages that describes how the progression of Heavens and Underworlds condition the human consciousness and thus the frames for our thoughts and actions within a given Age. The Mayan Calendar is not predicting the end of the world 2012, but the start of a new era. But many 'experts' came to a conclution that the Mayans predicted the worl's end as on 2012. A war god would come to earth, flood, earthquake and mega tsunamis occur, a gigantic star would come and hit the earth etc. But NASA discards all these rumors and tells there is no chance for an end of the World in 2012.
Actually, the Film makers made all the panic in some of the people to make high yield out of this belief for the film

OK, time for some fact checking. First of all, 13 is only unlucky in some cultures. In other cultures it's actually a lucky number.

Second, not all cultures use our calendar. It's only the year 2007 in parts of the world that use our calendar. And even then, numerous "corrections" have been made to our calendar throughout the ages to correct for inaccurate methods of timekeeping such as the addition of a leap day every 4 years.

Third and perhaps most importantly, not even the worst-case global warming scenarios predict the end of mankind, at the very worst some moderate disruptions to our civilization and world economy--again, in the worst case. There is actually no mechanism by which global warming could possibly bring about the end of mankind, despite Hollywood fantasy films to the contrary.

In fact, in millennia past the Earth's climate has been both very much hotter and very much colder than it is now. Mankind survived those periods just fine, and without home heating/air conditioning, agriculture, or any medicine.

Unfortunately, while global warming is supported scientifically, it is fast becoming the environmentalists' version of the apocalypse, and indeed much of environmentalism has become religious in nature. When enviros encourage end-of-the-world thinking like yours, they are engaging in a type of religious zealotry that, in the long run, will only end up discrediting their movement and efforts.

Are robert pattinson and kristen stewart going to the teen choice awards 2012?

    • ANSWER:
That was not announced yet. It will not be announced until red carpet unless a celebrity news website which as E! News, Access Hollywood, or Extra were to get early access into the award ceremony and show the seating arrangement. The film, Breaking Dawn is nominated for 7 Teen Choice Awards so I would expect the Twilight cast to be there.

Why is Matt Damon doing a fracking movie for OPEC against USA jobs and energy independence?
Is he fracking out of his mind?

Next thing you know he'll be campaigning for Muslim extremists punching bag and puppet Obama.

    • ANSWER:
The guy is a putz as are a great majority of the Hollywood types - they make millions off our capitalistic system all the while badmouthing the very system that made them wealthy.

I don't suppose that it's dawned on him that reliance on foreign oil is NOT good for America? You are correct, he's fracking nuts. Talk about being played by OPEC - the guy should be ashamed.

Does anyone know what that big castle like building is going to be at Disney California Adventure Park?
It looks like a castle or a mission/church?

    • ANSWER:
I believe you're referring to the Carthay Circle Theatre at the end of Buena Vista Street. It's a model of the actual Carthay Circle Theatre (, where Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered back in 1937. The entire theme of Disney California Adventure's new entrance, Buena Vista Street, is the Hollywood's Golden Age, and Walt's adventure as he traveled from Kansas to Hollywood to pursue a career in film. The Carthay Circle Theatre, an important movie palace from Hollywood's Golden Age and the site where the first full-length Disney feature premiered, is really a perfect addition to help tell the story of the new entrance.

Inside the theatre, there will be the Carthay Circle Restaurant, open to all guests. Here's a Disney Parks blog post about the restaurant:

This will also be an exclusive club, 1901 (named for Walt's birth year), at the theatre, similar to Disneyland's famous and mysterious Club 33. Here's an article on that exclusive club:

      Hope this answers your question!

How did Harry Reid turn "The Fiscal Cliff" turn into the "Mountain of Pork"?
    1) Help out NASCAR - Sec 312 extends the “seven year recovery period for motorsports entertainment complex property”, which is to say it allows anyone who builds a racetrack and associated facilities to get tax breaks on it. This one was projected to cost million over two years.

    2) A hundred million or so for Railroads - Sec. 306 provides tax credits to certain railroads for maintaining their tracks. It’s unclear why private businesses should be compensated for their costs of doing business. This is worth roughly $ 165 million a year.

    3) Disney’s Gotta Eat - Sec. 317 is “Extension of special expensing rules for certain film and television productions”. It’s a relatively straightforward subsidy to Hollywood studios, and according to the Joint Tax Committee, was projected to cost 0m for 2010 and 2011.

    4) Help a brother mining company out – Sec. 307 and Sec. 316 offer tax incentives for miners to buy safety equipment and train their employees on mine safety. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to bribe mining companies to not kill their workers.

    5) Subsidies for Goldman Sachs Headquarters – Sec. 328 extends “tax exempt financing for York Liberty Zone,” which was a program to provide post-9/11 recovery funds. Rather than going to small businesses affected, however, this was, according to Bloomberg, “little more than a subsidy for fancy Manhattan apartments and office towers for Goldman Sachs and Bank of America Corp.” Michael Bloomberg himself actually thought the program was excessive, so that’s saying something. According to David Cay Johnston’s The Fine Print, Goldman got .6 billion in tax free financing for its new massive headquarters through Liberty Bonds.
    6) B Off-shore financing loophole for banks – Sec. 322 is an “Extension of the Active Financing Exception to Subpart F.” Very few tax loopholes have a trade association, but this one does. This strangely worded provision basically allows American corporations such as banks and manufactures to engage in certain lending practices and not pay taxes on income earned from it. According to this Washington Post piece, supporters of the bill include GE, Caterpillar, and JP Morgan. Steve Elmendorf, super-lobbyist, has been paid ,000 in 2012 alone to lobby on the “Active Financing Working Group.”

    7) Tax credits for foreign subsidiaries – Sec. 323 is an extension of the “Look-through treatment of payments between related CFCs under foreign personal holding company income rules.” This gibberish sounding provision cost .5 billion from 2010 and 2011, and the US Chamber loves it. It’s a provision that allows US multinationals to not pay taxes on income earned by companies they own abroad.

    8) Bonus Depreciation, R&D Tax Credit – These are well-known corporate boondoggles. The research tax credit was projected to cost B for 2010 and 2011, and the depreciation provisions were projected to cost about 0B for those two years, with some of that made up in later years.
