Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Have any African American Film Directors directed a film in India and premiere in theaters in India?
I Directed a feature length film in India in 2011 that it hits theaters in west bengal in 2012, am I the first African American to do so? Serious Question. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      Hey Bryan,

I read your question a few days ago and decided in the spirit and hobby to research your question and I can't find any African-American that has accomplished this. I did find a few Indian Directors who had black skin and American Passports, but that's not the same at all. There have also been Music and Choreography Directors of African-American descent.

But you must be the first Director to make the claim. So we can all look for your work; what's the name of the film?

It's bugging me! Now I know who sings the song (The Black Keys), I know i've seen it in a film not long ago...
There's a film with will ferrel and zach galifianakis? I've gotta see this! But i'm afraid this isn't the one...

    • ANSWER:
"Gold on the Ceiling" was used in a prominent television advertising campaign for the 2012 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament nicknamed "Brackets Everywhere" on Turner Sports and CBS Sports networks. Along with being featured in commercials for the tournament, the song was featured during in-game coverage of the games.[10] A mix of the song is also used in a 2012 United Kingdom advert for the Indian beer Cobra.[11] The Sweet (with guitarist Andy Scott as the only original member) covered this song on their 2012 album New York Connection. It was also released as downloadable content for the video game Rocksmith. The first few seconds of the song as well as the end of the song was heard at the beginning of the NCIS season 9 episode, "The Good Son". It is used in the advertisements for the TV series Veep. It is featured on the video game MLB 12: The Show. It is also used in the second half of the theatrical trailer for The Campaign, which stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. The song can be heard on an episode of Workaholics entitled, "To Kill a Chupacabra". The song was also performed live at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards by the band, accompanied on guitar by Johnny Depp.[12] It has been covered by One Direction in a concert on June 1, 2012. NBC Sports has made video montages with "Gold on the Ceiling" during the 2012 Summer Olympics honoring the Olympic athletes who had won gold medals. Currently, it is used as the theme song for NASCAR: Race Day on SPEED

  4. QUESTION:
What are the best classic qawwalis from Bollywood films?
Are there any sites that explain the origins of filmi qawwalis and which ones are the best?

    • ANSWER:
      Best Qawwalis of Bollywood

Qawwali is a form of music that reached its zenith in South Asia, resulting from a fusion of traditional Indian classic music and Persian-Islamic music brought to India by the Islamic dynasties during the second half of the last millennium. Although, its origin is old and it did prosper during medieval ages, its real peak have been seen more recently, when it began to prosper as a popular music form among all classes of people in erstwhile undivided India and after its division, in both India and Pakistan.

      Khwaj mere khwaja...
A modern qawwali that highlights the secular character of music and its unlimited reach among the masses, this qawwali is also a showpiece of the genius called A R Rahman, the only Bollywood composer to have been awarded with both Oscars and Grammies.

In the movie Jodha Akbar, the context of the song is provided by marriage of Akbar with the daughter of Hindu king Man Singh of Amber. She was allowed to retain her religion even after her marriage to the Mughal Emperor. The marriage cemented the Mughal Empire and laid the foundation of its secular character, which was important in making it the largest and the most prosperous empire of all times. Akbar himself started a sect called Din-E Elahi which advocated equality of all human being and respected all religions.

  5. QUESTION:
Im really worried about everyone talking about the world coming to an end in 2012?
Hi, i know to some people this may sound silly as its a load of "rubbish" but i keep hearing all the time that the world is going to end in 2012, i know there is now a film which is soon to come out all about it etc.

but i was hearing this long long long long before this film was even heard about.

    why 2012?
    im worried.

    • ANSWER:
First and foremost, do not be worried. Doom in 2012 is no more likely than any other near-term future year. The reason 2012 is being talked about is based upon some writings, projections, interpretataions and pure speculation from various sources such as the Mayan calendar, Nostradamus, American Hopi Indian lore, E-Ching and Hindu Prophesy. Some of these mention no specific date for the day of doom, some do not even hint at any doom, but some people have hyped this into distortions which are being spread. Considering that there have been literally hundreds of doomsday / apocalyptic projections that have been forecast in the last 2000 years, and considering that we are still here, I would not worry about 2012. Have a happy long life.

  6. QUESTION:
Any good animated media from places other than English speaking-countries (USA, Canada, UK) and Japan?
I've seen a lot animation from all four of the aforementioned countries and I was wondering if anyone knew of other places with good animated shows/movies/short films.

It's just something I thought would be interesting to look into, because I don't hear about animation from other countries very often.

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
If you look at this catalogue of animated series on wikipedia, it lists the country of origin.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_television_series

      Here's the 2012 line-up of new shows:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_television_series_of_2012

note that there are 1 from Indonesia, 4 from Canada, 32 from USA and 78 from Japan, which explains why so many animation fans watch anime. There's just more to pick from and they're more diverse. It's likely that Canada relies on America's bigger audiences to make it's show profitable.

Animated movies tend to be more diverse in source than TV shows:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_feature_films

As you can see from the 2012 line up here, animated movies are from many more countries than TV shows:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animated_feature_films_of_2012

      ===

In the future I'd be on the lookout for shows in languages of areas of the world that are becoming more affluent, e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, Indian, Chinese. It would seem that there's a minimum number of language speakers before shows in that language become cost-effective, e.g. French and German seem to import and dub all their animated shows, even though they are affluent countries. Possibly you need ~100 million native speakers before shows pay for themselves.

  8. QUESTION:
Where did Sarah Palin and Romney get the idea of naming their sons crazy names?
Tagg Romney, the eldest of Mitt Romney's five sons, said on Wednesday that he wanted to “take a swing” at President Obama during Tuesday night’s debate,

    Bonus question:

Like father like son, Is Romney a chicken hawk?

= He was a chicken in the Vietnam War and got a Mormon exemption, now he is a hawk to go to war with Libya and Iran.

    • ANSWER:
Well, darling, Palin's kids' names seem to be very, very literal, based on where she was or what she liked when the kids were born (arguing a distinct lack of creativity and ability to think beyond the moment). Maybe it's the same with the Mittster - maybe Tag was the game Mittens was playing with Ann when she went into labor.

      (((Uncle)))

The Martian's rant made me laugh...with derision.

First, Obama wasn't eligible for any draft, since there was no draft of men his age, and has no "draft papers" to reveal. All he - in common with other men his age - ever had to do was register with Selective Service. So much for THAT bogus attempt at sliming.

Second, Mittens had multiple deferments, some of which were student deferments like Biden's. However, Mittens also got a “minister of religion or divinity student” deferment - one of the few given to Mormons (before the Mormon church, which actively supported the war, limited them). A lot of people had multiple deferments (again, like Biden), but they're honest about them. Mittens has lied repeatedly about his:

Third, Bollywood is the name of the center of the Indian film industry, located in Mumbai. I think the dimwit meant Hollywood.

Fourth, not all actors are liberals...not even all actors who name their kids weird names are liberals.

Ahh, the Martian... so full of fail.

  9. QUESTION:
Is the world really ending december 21 2012?
Everywhere i go i hear about this and the more i hear about it the more it scares me. Please tell me tgis is a hoax! Would there be any signs?

    • ANSWER:
No evidence for it at all.

There are a few hoaxes going the rounds, particularly the one about three days of darkness - that is just a complete hoax where surely the author of the email didn't believe it either.

Others though are by people who do honestly believe what they say - but on the basis of absolutely no evidence at all, just believing stories that were made up by others with little or no understanding of astronomy or science.

The so called astronomy doesn't make any sense to an astronomer. All that astronomers predict is a winter solstice. These happen every year, the shortest period of daylight of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. There is a rough alignment of the Sun with the center of the galaxy - this happens every year as well. There are no other alignments predicted, no strange planets, no reason to expect a solar flare particularly - no evidence for any of the other things that people say.

The Mayans were quite good at astronomy for a civilization without telescopes using only naked eye observations - but no better than other astronomers of their time - and are no match in astronomical predictions for our modern telescopes, computers and so on.

For that matter they didn't even predict any astronomical events either, apart obviously for the winter solstice. The consensus amongst most Mayan scholars is that it would be a time of celebration for them. Also they refer to dates way into our future - not the sort of thing you would do if you thought the world would end.

For that matter the Mayan calender only makes sense if you believe that the start date of the calender is significant. The start date of their calender is the date that they believed that the Mayan gods created the world. If you don't believe that, then no reason to pay any attention to this particular anniversary of the creation of the world either.

Most of this dates back to the 2012 movie (released in 2009) which is about as believable as an Indian Jones movie. Many people sadly took it seriously rather than just entertainment, and got really worried by this movie.

Here is a nice quote from Dara O-Brien (a UK comedian with a degree in science and an entertainingly pithy way of saying things) about the neutrino mutating part of the story in the movie, which is the key "science" explaining the catastrophe in the actual movie itself:

      "
The concept being that "entire cities tilt and fall into lava" while the only explanation on offer is the single line "the neutrinos have mutated". The science of this, Ó Briain points out, being equivalent to saying that "the electrons are angry" or "the light from the sun has gone off."

  10. QUESTION:
Is the world going to end on 21st Decemeber 2012?
It is really scaring me this whole the world is going to end thing!

    • ANSWER:
No, there is not a shred of evidence for any of the things people say, no truth at all. It is all just stories, and shows how easily human beings can fall for impressive sounding stories.

The Mayans didn't make any astronomical predictions for this date, also they have dates in their calender way in our future so couldn't have thought of it as the end of the world either.

The so-called astronomy makes no sense to an astronomer. For instance, yes there is an alignment of the sun with the centre of the galaxy - approximately - but it happens every year at this time. The sun isn't passing through the galactic plane right now - it did that 3 million years ago and is due to do it next about 30 or 40 million years from now.

There are no planetary alignments at all. There is absolutely no evidence of a mysterious extra planet invading our solar system and any of the hundreds of thousands of amateur astronomers would have easily spotted something like that just by the way it would change the orbits of other planets.

Amateur astronomers are out on every clear starry night around the world, with powerful telescopes - with CCD imaging they are highly sensitive some of them - as powerful as many of the professional telescopes of a couple of decades or so ago. They would immediately notice if any of the planets shifted even slightly from their predicted positions.

If there was a new planet, the effects would be noticed years ago most likely, certainly months ago and by now it would be a huge bright light in the sky, as bright as or brighter than the other planets, and the other planetary orbits would be shifted and the planets would no longer be where the astronomers expect them to be. That is simply not happening.

The stories only work for readers with no or minimal background understanding of astronomy and science

For that matter - why pay any attention to their calender anyway? It is only relevant if you believe in the start date of their calender - which is the date that the Mayans believe that their gods created the world, on 11th August 3114 BC.

Most of this scare dates back to the 2012 movie (released in 2009) which is about as believable as an Indian Jones movie. The marketing department for that film created fictional sites and started a whole viral campaign about the end of the world in 2012. Presumably they didn't really expect it to be taken seriously (at least I hope so!) - a similar campaign was used to promote Independence Day. The website they created for the campaign, where you could apply for a lottery ticket supposedly for a chance to survive the apocalypse has been taken down now and just redirects to the movie publicity site, thank goodness.

However sadly, their viral campaign was up for long enough to create panic, and many people took it very seriously rather than just entertainment, and got really worried by this movie, with some worried children writing to Nasa saying they were contemplating suicide. That's when Nasa realised how serious it was getting and put up their debunking website about it..

The science of this, Ó Briain points out, being equivalent to saying that "the electrons are angry" or "the light from the sun has gone off."

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_(film)

There are other things that could potentially be disastrous, but the Mayans couldn't predict them any more than we can, and they are so low probability that it is highly likely that it will be several million years before they happen, though it is pretty sure that something or other civilization threatening will happen some time in the next few hundred million years or so, and let's hope that by then we are able to do something about it. Certainly a few billion years from now we would be in deep trouble if we - or rather whatever we or our relatives evolve into - are still around on the Earth as the oceans will boil as the sun gets hotter.

So - there is something in it - astronomically - such things can happen. Just extremely unlikely to happen in the near future. There is enough of a possibility so that it is worth mapping all the NEOs (Near Earth Objects) to see if any are on course to impact Earth.

But - this Dec 21 2012 - it is just a story, all made up stuff, not even a shred of evidence for any of it. Like the game of Telephone or Chinese Whispers, more and more details get added as it gets repeated.

Rewrite and re-do west side story (redone Romeo and Juliet) using Indian background?
Analog sf has some stories set in this world. My obsession: Ernseto in March 2012 issue. Short, must be rewritten to avoid copyright and to set it in an Indian setting, and to lower the age of the people involved. It is a war time story about disease and cures.
Generally you will have to rewrite for India and age. So you can take any short story that does not have special effects and do it.
      KIpling's Kim??
And any play is good. You might like to pay the royalities and go legit.
The problem of using an existing story as is, is that the original writer will try to sue if you make any money or fame off of it.
So go promote some village story or legend that the west has not heard of, use the greek 3 parts of a story, and/or find someone who can write, and write the screen play.

Old, out of copyright stuff is best.

  14. QUESTION:
What's the definition of Hollywood movies?
I don't get why they refer it as Hollywood movies. When they say a film is a Hollywood movie, does it means it is filmed in Hollywood? or is Hollywood actually a studio?

    Hope someone can enlighten me!

    • ANSWER:
Physically, 'Hollywood' - as you know - is a name collectively given to the movie studio gaints like 'Warner Bros.' , 'Universal' , 'Paramount' etc...and hundreds of other smaller production houses located in Los Angeles - California. But, the word 'Hollywood' is used as a symbolic word, for certain (American) movies. Let me explain : -

Every country's culture reflects in its cinema. If you've seen French and Italian films, they make and produce more Art House related films. Which means more drama and experimental films.

Indian movie industry viz. Bollywood's mos of the films are musicals. They're loved by Indian audiences in India, and around the World. But international audiences, sometimes find it strange to relate with (though Slumdog Millionaire changed the strangeness).

Similarly when a person says that a particular film has more of a 'Hollywood' in a film, what he means to actually say is that 'american feeling' seen inside a movie. Let me give you example(s) : -

      1) Only America has oldest and majority of numbers of comics in the entire world. And so only Hollywood makes majority of Super-Hero films. And also, possibly only American produces most of the 'Action/Adventure' movies and 'Sci-Fi' found in entire world. (Although Bollywood produces largest number of movies in a year).

      2) Second comes the 'American Humor'. If you've seen films like Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, American Pie, Transformers, Avengers, Iron Man 2, etc...they all have these cheesy and witty dialogues which makes us laugh. Those dialogues itself reflects the 'American Culture' in such movies. You must have often heard the word 'COOL' whenever you watch a certain American movie. This is its how its 'Humor' is, viz. 'COOL' and found in almost its every film. For example : -

In a recent movie 'Drive' staring Ryan Gosling, there is a scene in which he has to shake hands with the villain of the film.

In the scene Ryan's hands are dirty because he is a Race Driver and a mechanic, so when the villain approaches to shake hands, Ryan says : -

      "My Hands are dirty"

But to these the villain - who is a Crime Lord also replies to him "So are mine"

      Take another example : -

In the movie 'Avengers (2012)' there is a scene in which Tony Stark and Captain America are quarreling with each other : -

      Captain America says : - "It's all about style isn't it...Mr. Stark..."

To this Tony replies to him : - "Among all people sitting in this room who is a) Wearing a Spangly Outfit and B) Is not Fearsome..."

To this quarrel, Dr. Banner (Hulk) who is sitting right next announces : - "Steve...." viz. Captain America's name.

Such witty one-liner dialogues you can find only in american movies, because 'American Culture' is like that.

      3) Is the heavy use of soundtracks. Most of the Hollywood films make heavy use of background music then films in any other country. Also, you can fell that 'Rock N' Roll' music in many of the background music. For example here are some good soundtracks from good films. You'd get an Idea : -

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUXw7WlG-Jw&feature=relmfu

      4) Most of the Hollywood movies are very quick, practical and to the point. There are many 'dramas' made in Hollywood also which have a slower pace, but in general and overall, the practicality can be seen in Hollywood movies, viz. again seen in American culture.

American English also, if you know, is more direct, more reasonable and more informal, then British English viz. is more sophisticated. For example : -

A British man wants to buy a ticket to go from London to Chicago. Then when he goes to buy the ticket he will say : - "Can you please give me the ticket to the City of Chicago."

While if an American wants to buy the same ticket he would say : - "To Chicago...economy class...one person...please..."

This is what makes American Language different, and which can be seen in its movies viz. why the word 'Hollywood' is attached to it.

      5) In American movies, you get that 'patriotic feeling' at some point, in the movie, throughout various subjects like its actors' dialogues, the music of the film, or its story. Which only 'Hollywood' can offer. For example : -

      Here is a soundtrack from a well-known American game 'Commandos' : -

It is a soundtrack of a game, but such soundtracks are found in many American drama/action movies also, which feels patriotic. It makes America distinct.

These is all, Why the word 'Hollywood' is used for such films made and produced in U.S.

I hope I've enlightened you about Hollywood.

Are Tamil movies making waves on foreign shores?
    A fillip for Tamil cinema
    http://www.thehindu.com/arts/cinema/article3820994.ece

It is no secret that South Indian films, Tamil movies in particular, are gaining wider acceptance in several international film festivals. Bollywood may be the face of Indian cinema, but it is Kollywood that is making waves on foreign shores. Consequently, it was only natural for a person of Hannah Fisher’s stature to spend two valuable days in the home of Tamil cinema, Chennai, to meet people for a special feature — SAFF Memories Project — which will be part of the inaugural South Asian Film Festival (SAFF Canada) to be held in Vancouver, Surrey and Abbotsford from October 31 to November 3, 2012.

Days before the May opening of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the director of the first Bollywood film invited for an official screening gave a shout-out to his colleagues in a long-overlooked arm of the Indian film industry.

“There’s a whole new wave in Tamil cinema,” said Anurag Kashyap, whose film Gangs of Wasseypur was screened at Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival. “They’ve made the most extraordinary films in the last two years and, at the national level, people don’t even know about it.”

Spread across southeastern India, northeastern Sri Lanka and other parts of Southeast Asia, the Tamils number some 65 million people and possess one of the world’s oldest cultures. But in Hindi-dominated India, they — and their movies — are usually ignored or dismissed.

    • ANSWER:
In India, regional language films are totally ignored by bollyhood & the central Government as if they lack technical knowledge and way of telling the story. But in actual practice, films in Tamil &Telugu etc is getting popularity due to commercial viability and the application of modern technology.Government should realize this and try to treat these films at par with Hindi films.Tamil film producers should try to enhance the true value of the story and music to suit all categories of the public.

Probably not, as Bell expoused, but we're not trying to sell blacks and Jews to aliens.

  25. QUESTION:
Are you surprised the India Commonwealth Games are going to be a disaster- they can't even answer phones well?

    • ANSWER:
Yes I am surprised. India can and should do much better. During the British raj, the British may claim to have colonised India for a while, but the Indians may claim rather more that they civilised the British and taught them to wash!

Now, Indians are teaching the British the art of shopkeeping, film making, making cars, and fixing computers. There is a fine temple, a fine mosque, and a fine gurdwara in London.

It seems by the news reports coming out of there that the games has brought on the very worst aspects of Indian life, such as the corruption, the shoddiness, the disregard for human welfare at every level from the babies of the building workers to the top foreign athletes... added to this the very worst attitudes of international corporatism, where corporate hospitality at vast expense pushes aside the very folk required to run a city, rather than run up a bank balance.

And my heart most of all goes out to the hawkers, who are considered security risks and ordered out without compensation. To any foreigner, one of the most potent images of India are the streets lined with colourful people dressed in colourful clothes prepared to provide you with anything your heart desires at a fraction of the cost back home. India is not India without its noise and bustle and its chaotic Bombay mix of fakirs, sari sellers, mango growers, phone fixers, its beautiful long-haired dark-eyed women and its enterprising children.

It would have been better to hold the games in some village, where it would have been cheaper, and the organisers could afford to move much fewer villagers to the outskirts, but with first pick of the hawker stalls servicing those attending the games.

I would be interested to see if their gods can pluck triumph from the jaws of shame. I hope rather that the whole world's priorities will shift at last away from grand prestigious projects stuffed full of corruption, appalling abuse of power, mis-spending of scarce public money, and this horrible Free Market Lifestyle corporate ethic that sucks goodness and functionality and replaces it with a millionaire bling stylishness that is at last seen worldwide for the shamefulness and wastefulness it represents.

Maybe there is something after all the Indians can teach the British, as they prepare for the London Olympics in 2012?

  26. QUESTION:
End of an Era - David Bolland - A British - Why we indians think about him?
He is a British. He passed away recently. What achievements he did to indians to think about him?

    • ANSWER:
      Dave Bolland (1919-2012)

He was a pioneer in documenting, at his own expense, live performances of Kathakali and Cholliyattam, along with their training and practices. No other institution or individual in the country has captured the art on camera so extensively. Today Bolland's recordings from 1950 to 1990 are invaluable treasures of our art traditions. Thus with the demise of Bolland, an era in the history of Kathakali and its documentation ends. His endeavour started at a time when sound recording was not available.

Born in 1919 in Cairo, making amateur documentary was Bolland's passion from childhood. He filmed the Royal Jubilee of 1935 and the Coronation of George VI in 1937. In 1939, David joined the army when the Second World War broke out. He was an officer in the 53rd (Welsh) Division, and his meritorious service earned him an MBE (Military).

“When the war ended in 1945, I took discharge from the army, and, in the following year sailed to India to take up a job with Peirce Leslie & Co, whose business covered tea, coffee, rubber, insurance and shipping,” David had said during one of our earlier meetings.

In 1948, he moved to Kerala. From 1950, David lived in Calicut (now Kozhikode) of erstwhile Malabar for 17 years until he moved to Cochin (Kochi) as the Managing Director of the company.

His first encounter with a Kathakali performance happened in Kozhikode (1954), in which guru Kunju Kurup had the lead role. “I did not know that he was a legendary artist,” David had stated.

Later, David recorded, “I had been working in Kerala for six years before I saw Kathakali for the first time. At that time, a few foreigners living in India neither understood, nor wanted to understand, an exotic and abstruse art like this; it was long before tourists came to Kerala, and there were no overseas students at any of the teaching institutions. Strange as it may seem now, few people in the West had ever heard of Kathakali. The performance was in Calicut where I lived, and although it was fascinating and mesmerising, the action on the stage seemed interminable and I was soon rather bored, as I had no idea what was going on. That would have been my only experience of Kathakali had I not had the good fortune to meet Mr. K.P.S. Menon, who, I later discovered, was an authority on the art and the author of many books on the subject.”

One of his invaluable documentaries is on Cholliyattam, of all the technically intricate and stylised Kathakali roles performed by the late Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair. The master had also published manuals (titled ‘Kathakali Vesham') on the training and acting methodology. Today, David's footage and Nair's manuals are reference sources for practitioners and scholars of the art.

  30. QUESTION:
Can anyone name this Tamil (or other Indian) song?
I visited Tamil Nadu and watched a music video with a really catchy beat to it. I think it's in Tamil, but I'm not 100% sure. In the video a guy is trying to get a girl to like him. At one point she's thirsty and he breaks into a shop, grabs a drink and puts money on the counter. He opens the bottle in front of her and it sprays everywhere lol. Later she is trying to pray in a church but the guy keeps trying for her. In the end, he is jumping around the streets/ a bridge with a cape or something. Anyone have any idea of the name?? I think I was watching a 2012 recap show if that helps.

    • ANSWER:
It is "konjam konjam" song from Tamil film Naan Ee .
I am too crazy about that song.

  31. QUESTION:
Is the 'Fairness Doctrine" behind the equal time given to B. PIYUSH Jindal last night?

    • ANSWER:
Dum E, I think you're having some fun with us.

But I called it: 2008 is was Barack HUSSEIN Obama

Now when we're talking about 2012, the same people who threw fits whenever they heard Barack's middle name spoken are the same ones stressing an opponent's given name.

Surely you don't think Democrats can have it both ways.

My doctor is Indian-born. I would trust him with my life if necessary.
And Hindus weren't behind 9/11. I know there is Hindu/Muslim strife in that sad place, but as far as I know India doesn't want to kill us.

I mean, a film in Hindi and set in Mumbai just won the Best Picture Oscar!! They're gonna start marketing films here that Americans will actually be entertained by (maybe that's why so much stimulus money is going to Hollywood - to subsidize the film industry for drop in BO that is the result of years of making crappy films).

  32. QUESTION:

  33. QUESTION:
Are American movies the worst kind now?
i mean, abraham lincoln the vampire hunter? is that seriously the best USA can come up with these days? some good films in the 80's but the stories now are embarrassing, patriotic, cheesy etc

if it wasn't for British influence/stories like titanic, lord of the rings, harry potter, james bond etc (that make billions) i think hollywood would be pretty much dead in the water

Indian Bollywood is becoming huge, as well as Japanese cinema, European etc films with a bit of creativity and depth

    • ANSWER:
For every bad American movie, there's also a bad European and Indian film. This question is loaded and full of the kind of stupid ignorance that leads to more ignorance. Good writing and filming doesn't come from any single nation or influence. It comes from individuals who want to tell a good story, and good stories come from eclectic backgrounds.

For example, The Titanic isn't influenced by the British. It's based on American history and was written by a Canadian who was appealing to American audiences.

Here's a list of a bunch of American films that have been released in 2012 so far. Lots of good ones in there, and the vast majority of them don't have any of your "British influence":

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_films_of_2012

Good and bad movies are products of people being people, regardless of where they come from. Some care about quality, others don't, and their nationality has nothing to do with this. Picking a single film from near the low end of spectrum that does NOT properly indicate the average film of its origins -- and one that has been universally rejected by most Americans, no less -- to base a poorly constructed argument against the American filming industry is an indication of an overly biased mind that hasn't given much towards forethought and consideration, or the fact that the American culture is a melting pot of ideas from all over the world.

  34. QUESTION:
I am trying to find out who this Independent Film Director is !?
So I'm trying to figure out who this Director is:

I met him Dec. 28th 2012 on the Metro in Madrid, Spain. He is (only a little bit!) Indian looking, and his young daughter (about 7 or so) was very dark skinned. Also, he accidentally popped his daughters balloon.
When me and my friends were talking to him, he mentioned that he was an Independent Film Director.
He also said that he lives in California.

He was a middle aged man, kind of pudgy (but not much!), had darkish skin and dark hair. He also had glasses.

I was just curious because he basically planned out my whole future, and I thought it would be cool to know who exactly he was :)

He also mentioned that a lot of times he gets actors come in to audition who are kind of poor and hungry, and need to work as a waiter many times, so I don't know if he is too big, but yeah.

If any of you know who he is or how to figure out who he is tell me please ! :)

    Thanks 😀

Satanists and many pagan cultures from every corner of the world all throughout history have celebrated this like the Sumerians, Babylonians, Cherokee, Hopi, Chinese I-Ching (confirmed by Terence McKenna), Mayans (Pacal Votan; Chilam Balam of Tizimin, Mani, Chumayel; Jaguar Prophet), Egyptians, Celts, etc. This evil event is called "the abomination that causes desolation" that will be set up in the Jewish Temple's Holy of Holies when the antichrist is imbued with the spirit of satan himself. When will Jesus come? Only God Himself knows exactly, but very soon in "the twinkling of an eye" and like "a thief in the night". If you believe or not, that is up to you; either way it still comes.

  38. QUESTION:
Is the world going to end Dec. 21, 2012?
I am seriously afraid and it's depressing me! I need a serious answer. I don't care how long or short it is. I'm young and afraid please help. I am agnostic so don't say anything that god will save us or whatever!

    • ANSWER:
There is no evidence for it at all.

There are a few out and out hoaxes going the rounds, particularly the one about three days of darkness - that is just a complete hoax where surely the author of the email didn't believe it either.

  39. QUESTION:
why and when was Bollywood created? and why India?
where else a "Hollywood" was set up in the world ? what about China? Russia, Germany etc?
what is Bollywood like? where it is? how big it is?

    • ANSWER:
Actually, Bollywood is Older than Hollywood - just go tell it to the Marines.

In 1899 the first Indian short film was screened, and Bollywood was born.

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/find_out/guides/2003/bollywood/newsid_2683000/2683809.stm

In terms of audience, Bollywood is massive. By comparison Hollywood is nowhere near the size nor the output.

I have this feeling that Hollywood is so desperate it now launches many of it's movies (Premiers) right here in London. We have a massive Bollywood audience right here in London and Bollywood make a lot of their movies here too. Not because it's warm, but because of the very long daylight hours in the summer - June, July and August.

But then, this takes a Hell of a lot of beating. No dialogue, but the action speaks for itself.

  41. QUESTION:
What is Life Of Pi about?

    • ANSWER:
      Author(s)Yann Martel
      Original titleLife of Pi
      CountryCanada
      LanguageEnglish
      Genre(s)Fiction
      PublisherKnopf Canada

Life of Pi is a fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel published in 2001. The protagonist, Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, an Indian boy from Pondicherry, explores issues of spirituality and practicality from an early age. He survives 227 days after a shipwreck while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
The novel, which has sold more than ten million copies worldwide, was rejected by at least five London publishing houses before being accepted by Knopf Canada, which published it in September 2001. The UK edition won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction the following year. It was also chosen for CBC Radio's Canada Reads 2003, where it was championed by author Nancy Lee. The French translation, L'histoire de Pi, was chosen in the French version of the contest, Le combat des livres, where it was championed by Louise Forestier. The novel won the 2003 Boeke Prize, a South African novel award. In 2004, it won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in Best Adult Fiction for years 2001–2003. In 2012 it was adapted into a theatrical feature film directed by Ang Lee with a screenplay by David Magee.

Life of Pi is divided into three sections. In the first section, the main character, Pi, an adult, reminisces about his childhood. He was named Piscine Molitor Patel after a swimming pool in France. He changes his name to "Pi" when he begins secondary school, because he is tired of being teased with the nickname "Pissing Patel". His father owns a zoo in Pondicherry, providing Pi with a relatively affluent lifestyle and some understanding of animal psychology.
Pi is raised a Hindu, but as a fourteen-year-old he exposes himself to Christianity and Islam, and starts to follow all three religions as he "just wants to love God. He tries to understand God through the lens of each religion and comes to recognize benefits in each one.
Eventually, his family decides to sell their zoo over a land dispute with the government, and sell the animals to various zoos around the world before emigrating to Canada. In the second part of the novel, Pi's family embarks on a Japanese freighter to Canada carrying some of the animals from their zoo, but a few days out of port, the ship succumbs to a storm and sinks, resulting in his family's death. During the storm, Pi escapes in a small lifeboat with a spotted hyena, an injured Grant's zebra, and an orangutan.

    • ANSWER:
I've always had a problem with Hollywood remaking Asian movies. It is because Hollywood can no longer come up with original ideas anymore (they are now even remaking old American movies). I much prefer the original movies to any remake. With the remakes of most Asian movies that Hollywood does it loses a lot of what makes it 'scary' I think.

  44. QUESTION:
A Question to all the Fans of Aamir Khan out there..?
.. With the recent brutal gang-rape in Delhi, the entire nation has come together and our anger is not just against the case which has just happened, but it just casts an unblinking spotlight on one the ugliest issues our society is suffering from for a long time now. People from all walks of life, kids, youngsters, elders and even film-stars assembled to take out protests against such brutality which can happen to any woman in India. It has caused an uproar across the nation, on social media.. a sorta of an awakening.

Considering this happening and the way protests for stronger rape laws have gained momentum and demand for a stringent & exemplary punishment to the rapists of that 23 yr old girl is being carried out, weren't you expecting Mr. Aamir Khan (one of most successful Indian actors) to at least make a statement about the case? With his groundbreaking show, Satyamev Jayate, he had initiated to discuss the issues present in our society and with its viewership, had proved that "When Aamir speaks, every one listens."

He himself had said just prior to the show had begun being aired that "the job of an actor is to grace the society". Breaking the Bollywood mold by speaking against India's social ills, he had set himself out from the league of actors who consider "entertaining the audience" as their typical job. Now that he had become very much like one of the common men discussing the social issues of our society, wasn't there a duty of his, to come forward and join the protests? make demands for stronger rape laws? demanding stricter punishment to the rapists along with the nation? When many personalities from the B-town came out, he was nowhere to be seen.

I'm an ardent fan of Mr. Khan, but keeping aside my veneration & admiration towards him for a while, I was indeed expecting him to speak up regarding this particular case after his show during 2012. Rape is one the cruelest of evils !

What do you think? Please express.

Thank you & please maintain decency.
It is not a case of "his choice". 50. QUESTION:
    Complexion of Indians?
I just recently met a North Indian girl and her skin was a very light shade, she had hazel eyes and light brown hair and I mistakened her for being Latin and she told me she was Indian, I was really surprised I knew that India had people of all sorts of people but I never imagined that some would look so european, is the reason genetics? I am very confused because some Indians are also very dark skinned do they have different ancestors from other backgrounds or something?
And I am talking about Indians from India not native americans
She was a Punjabi north indian

    • ANSWER:
Although Indians are generally dark skinned there might be exceptions in India.Usually South Indians mix a lot with Europeans(Most of the people living in Fort Cochin,a place in Kerala(South India) are white). It's the same with Pondichery(A place in South India) where there are many people of French ancestry.

Here is the picture of a South Indian guy from Kerala.

Guys from Kerala,Pondichery can be mistaken for real whites too. This is mainly because there are many Christians in Kerala(There are Christians in Kerala more than any other states in India) and the best port in the world is Cochin port and the people in a port city is mixed.

Punjabis on the other hand are mixed with persians and they tend to be light yellow in color.Punjab is in the North Western part of India and they mix with persians who are light skinned(They are not as light as Europeans though but can pass as Latin)
