  7. QUESTION:
What program can I use to convert and burn films to play on a panasonic blu ray player?
I used to use ConvertXdvd to convert and burn films to dvd, which worked exceptionally well. I now have a Panasonic ble ray SC - BTT362 and would like to watch all my burned discs but they are not recognised by the player. My question is "is there a similar program that will convert and burn discs that I can play on my new Blu Ray player?

    • ANSWER:
You bought a BluRay player that does not accept computer-burned disks so there is no software that can solve this.

It is time for you to upgrade to a simple Media Server. The Roku XDS, Roku 2 or Western Digital units run from -0 but play most computer files without conversion. Just copy to a flash drive, plug in and enjoy your videos without any time spent converting. Trust me - this is a lot easier.

You can buy more expensive units that stream from your PC so you dont even have to use a Flash Drive - but the devices that work with the flash drive are cheaper.

      Hope this helps.

  8. QUESTION:
How do they make the punches in the Rocky films look so real?
I've recently watched the entire Rocky saga (all six films) on DVD and have wondered how the actors made their punches and hits appear so real.

The fights portray very accurate punching and i would like to know how they did this without the actors getting themselves hurt! Certain shots are slowed down to show fists making impacts on the characters faces where facial distortion takes place and they look visibily hurt.

How do they achieve this without hurting each other for real?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I think practice and choreography help a lot.

Not to mention the sound effects added to make the punches seem more violent.

  10. QUESTION:
Is there somewhere/someway to get VHS tapes transferred over to DVD?
I've got a lot of old/classic movies on VHS that I am unable to locate on DVD, hoping to be able to have them transferred over, or find a website that specializes in classic films on DVD. Any suggestions would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Half of the answers to your query are inaccurate.

If you are the original purchaser of the VHS tapes, you are permitted to make one copy. However, you can not give away the copy or sell it. You are permitted to hire somebody to assist you in making copies.

Next, there are machines out there that will copy a vhs tape to dvd. You can find them for about 0. However, the copywrited material will prove to be problematic under this option.

Additionally, you could simply go out to Best Buy and purchase Dazzle for ...and convert them yourself. The problem with many of the systems such as dazzle is that the resolution is low. If you are planning on watching your dvd's on a small tv or as a computer file, it will work well. Go larger...the quality is disappointing; however, this is subjective and a matter of opinion.

There are service providers that can assist you with converting; however, you need to be cautious when selecting your service providers. As questions about their resolution, equipment, etc. Also, the price to have this done can widely vary. My organization charges .99 per tape for three or more tapes.

If you have questions, please feel free to drop me a line or give me a call. If you do want to have this done professionally, again, I invite you to give me a call.

  11. QUESTION:
Why do people rent Films, when their local library offers them for free?
A lot of people pay to rent films on DVD at Blockbuster and other stores. But why? - In my local town there is a library literally across the road from a film rental shop, so why would someone pay to rent from there when they can get the same film across the road completely free of charge, and with a longer rental period?
    Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Some libraries dont offer the newer movies or movies that just came out to dvd. Also ppl like to watch in blu-ray and all that good stuff and I know my library has really old school stuff like The Wizard of Oz and movies like that. No blue ray..HD..3D nothing like that. I use red box its for a movie. I would get netflix but i dont have internet right now.

  12. QUESTION:
What would you recommend for filming a babys birth? My husband is deployed and will miss it. ?
Should I get a digital camera with video or a camcorder? What would be the easiest way to send the videos to him? Camcorder that films on DVD type format or a digital camera? Im so confused as to what is the best.

    • ANSWER:
for this very important event. try and coordinate with someone who already has a camera they know how to use. I often sit standby for births but then I shoot video for a living.

It is an important event, you might want to get someone who knows what they are doing and is not squeamish!! but if you have to get a camera, keep this in mind...
with MiniDV you can shoot up to an hour on one tape but then you have to capture the video then edit and compress to author to DVD. if you get one that shoots to memory stick, it is already compressed but your video time is limited, and you can almost instantly upload to a web page.
another alternative, if you have time to plan and the timing is right. get a laptop and a cam, download Skype, and film it live to him.

      God luck :-)

  16. QUESTION:
How to make a single DVD with different languages extracted from 2 disks?
I have 2 copies of a Jackie Chan film on DVD, one is in English and Chinese and another in Spanish and Chinese, what I would like to is to extract the English Audio from one and somehow merge it into the other, so I would end up with the film having English, Spanish and Chinese (wife only speaks Spanish you see) is there a tool or tools and guides out there which will allow me to extract and then compile the files in order to accomplish this please?

    • ANSWER:
You can extract audio with this program:
      http://www.solveigmm.com/HowTo/how-to-delete-audio-from-avi-with-avi-trimmer

You can add audio tracks in Windows Movie Maker, but I don't know of any software that would burn multiple audio tracks. Most, Nero for one, will only burn Audio #1, which would be the default track.

  17. QUESTION:
How much should I charge for my services?
Well I'm gonna start my own free lancing videography and need to know how much to charge, how I should advertise it etc I am going to college next year for animation for 4 years and videography for 2 years I'm gonna record weddings, ceremonies, special events etc I do all of the editing, filming, dvd burning and put images on them also what should I charge?
I'm buying a 00 camcorder from Sony and have Sony Vegas Platinum 10
    Just bought a tripod

    • ANSWER:
Find out what other providers charge for the same services, then adjust up or down for your experience level. GOING to go to college for videography and animation doesn't mean much if you haven't completed it. Do you already own professional grade equipment?

Have some samples of your work available for potential customers to look at. And you might have to do your first couple jobs for a lower than usual price.

      Good luck.

  19. QUESTION:
How can I put my commercial VHS tapes onto DVD?
I have a VHS to DVD recorder but it won't copy any commercial VHS films to DVD. I bought the machine specifically to move my collection to DVD and ditch the VHS tapes but no luck - is there any way to copy "copyrighted" VHS tapes (I know it may not be strictly legal but it's only for personal consumption - I don't want to have to buy all the films again on DVD just because VHS will soon be no more!). Help!

    • ANSWER:
DMCA regulations, passed by Congress a few years ago, mandates that manufacturers include circuitry that impedes the recording of any copyrighted embedded material.

However, that same DMCA regulation allows you, as a consumer, to make an archival, or backup, copy for yourself. IF you can figure out how to get around the copyright inhibitor.

Nobody sells them in stores, but they are legally available on the Internet and you can buy them as low as . Mine cost years ago and it still works perfectly well. It's called a Digital Video Stabilizer. You have to take your Video Out from your VHS side and plug it into the DVS box. Then take a video cable from that to plug into the Video In connector to you DVD recorder. Meanwhile, the audio cables go directly from the VHS output to the DVD input.

And that's it. Now you have a purely video signal and your DVD will record it. Hit record on your DVD, hit play on your VHS, and wait until it's done.

Those DVS boxes are available from Amazon.com, RNJ Electronics, and a whole slew of distributors on the internet. And legal, as they're a consumer version of the exact same technology REQUIRED by the FCC for TV stations to use when they broadcast.

  20. QUESTION:
How do I export an animation short to DVD or film?
Hi. I'm planning to do an animation short next year. I'll be doing it mostly in my computer using Creatoon and Pencil. But I don't know what's the screen size and the resolution to be used in order to export the animation to film or dvd. What is the best resolution and the size of the screen - in DPI, to be used to export my animation?

    • ANSWER:
If you're creating an animation entirely on the computer you should be working in PPI (pixels per inch), not dpi.

The resolution you work at should depend on where and how the animation will be displayed. If your film is only going to be shown on the web, you can work at a smaller resolution so it's easier to download or stream online. If your film is intended for television broadcast, standard television definition is 720 X 540. If you plan to put it onto dvd, you'll have to keep in mind that many people have Plasma or LCD HDTV's, which most work a resolution of 1280 X 720p. Considering that it can take years to finish a 1 1/2 - 2 hour film you need to plan ahead and realize that TV's will probably be running at a resolution of 1920 x 1080p (there are already some high end HDTV's that run at 1920 X 1080i). If you intend to transfer your animation to actual film stock to be projected in a theater, then you need to work at even higher resolutions. Film doesn't work with pixels, it captures images through a chemical reaction. However, the pixel resolution potential of film is equal to roughly 12 million pixels. It's why such a tiny image on a film strip can have light shown through it and be blown up and onto huge theatre screens. So if you intend to eventually transfer your work to 35mm film, you'll probably want to work at around 4K (4096 pixels wide).

Even though it feels awesome to think about working with a large hi-def resolutions, you have to keep in mind that the bigger the resolution, the heavier your image files and animation are going to be, the more hard drive storage space you'll need and more RAM memory usage and strain will be placed on your computer. Making sure that your computer will be able to handle the workload is important, otherwise you'll be stalled by your own equipment's limitations.

Do I need to watch all the Marvel films to understand Avengers Assemble?
I've got the film on DVD but was wondering if i need to watch the other films like Thor and Iron Man 1/2 first, thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Not all of them, It explains the Hulk's story, Iron Man it probably wouldn't hurt to at least see the first one, Captain America it explains how he got to the present times so no (but I'd watch it before the 2nd one comes out), Black Widow is introduced in the Avengers, and finally Thor, Loki (the bad guy whom is Thor's brother) ad Hawkeye are all in Thor so if anything Thor would be the most important to watch, though Hawkeye has a very small part! Thanks for asking, I LOVED the movie! It's probably one of the greatest movies of all time!

  29. QUESTION:
What is the best equipment a company can use that provides a service of transferring Film/VHS to DVD?
I am researching VHS/Film Transfer to DVD companies and I am looking for a company that actually cleans up the films and restores the images to the best possible outcome. What is the BEST equipments these companies can use so I know what to ask for when researching them out. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
The basic term for the equipment is Telecine (tella-see-nee). It consists of an enclosed film projector and a video pickup sensor. Since (in the US) film runs at 24 frames per second, and video is 30 frames per second, a shutter is used in the projector runs at 5x per frame. The resultant image is then 120 frames per second, and the video sensor picks it up at 4x per frame. That nearly eliminates the old-time flicker like you saw in old, ancient movies.

Telecine rarely cleans up the film. GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) is the ruling format. Electronically, there are things that can be done to hide, or minimize, the garbage, such as artificial sharpening, color enhancement, etc. And that's the best you'll find at standard film/VHS to DVD transfer companies. They're in the transfer business, not the re-mastering business.

For re-mastering, it's so much an intensive, expensive process, you'd really need to talk with a production studio such as Sony, Warner Bros, etc to find out what equipment they use. Most likely, it's highly computer-intensive to review each individual frame and essentially recreate it all over again.

  35. QUESTION:
Can anyone provide me with a film adaptation to Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights that is faithful to the novel?
I would like to find a film (on DVD preferably) of Wuthering Heights that is faithful and accurate to the original Emily Bronte novel?
I am a student; however, Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite novels and I just want to watch an accurate film! =)
I am a student; however, Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite novels and I just want to watch an accurate film! =)

    • ANSWER:
I know of seventeen different film versions of the novel, and I've seen eleven of them. There are no versions that really get it right.

Without question, the version that is the *closest* to the novel is the 1978 BBC version starring Ken Hutchinson and Kay Adshead. Unfortunately, if you live in the U.S., it's almost impossible to find here. I had to special-order a copy from Europe. The second-closest version is probably the 1992 version starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. This version is easy to find, however, don't even think about substituting it for reading the novel. It's not close enough to do that.

  36. QUESTION:
Why do you think good movies usually tank at the box office but rake in the dough on DVD?

    • ANSWER:
Maybe cos going to the movies cost a fortune now and its cheaper to buy the movie and have it for the rest of your life than to pay to see it once.
Might also be because they didnt know it was good until everyone else saw it at the movies and then they decided to buy it :)

  44. QUESTION:
How to transfer DVD to Windows Movie Maker?
Alright, I am going to make a highlight film for my football team and I have all the game films on DVD. Now, how do you transfer the film from DVD to Windows Movie Maker, where I can cut and edit the film to create a highlight film.

When I put in the DVD it goes straight to Quickplay to where I can watch the film, but it doesn't save it or anything so it won't get saved into the folders... how do I do that?

    • ANSWER:
You'll need a DVD ripper like Xilosoft to rip the DVD into an avi (or applicable file format for WMM) and then load that file into the maker.

You also may be able to connect the video camera to your computer via firewire and import from there. I don't have a DVD camera, so I'm not sure if it works the same way, but w/ my DV camera we used WMM to import the files onto the computer

No, not pointless. No one has seen every film that's ever been made, but they are all available to buy. And people might like to know what you think of them rather than the other run of the mill reviews they might of read:)

  47. QUESTION:
How to save files from Windows movie maker as mpg etc ?
I got a film on DVD and I cut a part out of it and it saved it as wlmp file and there's nothing else you can save it as. How to I convert this to mpg ? Or any other format that can be played on any computer.

    • ANSWER:
In Movie Maker use File>Save As... to save the project file. This is the file as it appears in Movie Maker with the titles, effects and transitions showing. To save this project as a video use Publish. Publish puts everything on the Movie Maker Storyboard together into a movie. You'll get a choice of file types in the publish dialog. If mpg isn't one of the choices, publish to a high quality file (anything with "DV" or "DVD" in the name is good and then use a converter to turn it into the file type you need. All of this seems like a hassle at first but you get used to doing it and don't even have to think about what you're doing after a short while.

The wlmp file is a Movie Maker project file. Open it in Movie Maker and click the Publish tab for the options.

      DVD Decrypter Main Page
