  4. QUESTION:
What is the Unification Movement? What are the beliefs of the Unification Movement?
    What is the Unification Movement?
What are the beliefs of the Unification Movement?

    • ANSWER:
Answer: The Unification movement is led by a man named Rev. Sun Myung Moon who started it in the 1940's. The movement immediately became controversial as Moon believed that the Bible could not be understood without the aid of a book called Divine Teaching, which is a compilation of his personal teachings. Moon has constructed quite a fortune for himself as the leader of the Unification movement—he is worth millions. Moon has also led the movement to do many bizarre things. The Unification movement spent 48 million dollars of its own money to produce an anti-communist movie. The movie flopped. Perhaps the movement is most notorious is for the mass wedding of over 2000 couples in 1982.

First, let us look at what the Bible says about false teachers and compare it to the life of Rev. Moon. According to 1 Timothy 6:3, teaching that is espoused to be from God leads to holy and righteous living. Moon has been accused of sexual impurity on numerous occasions. Moon was even convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to prison. Does Moon sound like a man who is godly? In the short book of Jude, he warns the church about men who would come in and turn grace into ungodly behavior. If you look at the tactics of the Unification church you find deceptive tactics from changing their name when talking with people to employing mind control techniques. It is no wonder that Paul says in Acts 20:29-30, "after my departure shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, . . ."

Second, the movement is characterized by false, anti-Scriptural theology. According to Moon's teaching, man is visible God and God is the invisible form of man (see Hebrews 2:6-8 for a clear refutation of this). Obviously, Unification theology denies the Trinitarian understanding of the Godhead (see Titus 2:13). Furthermore, Unification denies Christ was raised physically from the dead (read 1 Corinthians 15) and denies His true nature (see Hebrews 1:1-3). Deliverance from sin, according to Moon and his followers, is not based on the finished work of Christ where the sins of mankind were crucified with Him on the cross (1 Peter 2:24). Rather, works and human effort are needed, directly contradicting Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” In this religion of works and the denial of the deity of Christ, Unification joins the myriad of cults and false religions which have these same two things in common.

  5. QUESTION:
Who are your top movie, series, or game music composers?
I'm not talking about the classical ones by Mozart or Beethoven, I'm talking about like John Williams or James Horner. I was just wondering other people's opinions about some film scores because some or most people doesn't seem to care about the scores of the movie/s. If you don't know many film composers you can write top 3 or 5 and if you know many Top 10 or more, and what movie/s, series, or games did you recognized them. And if possible, "Why you choose the composers on your Top 3?"

    Anyways, here's my Top 5:

    5. Mark Isham (October Sky)
    4. James Howard Newton (Batman Begins & The Dark Knight, Hunger Games)
    3. Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Mulan, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted, Tangled)
    2. James Horner (Rocketeer, Apollo 13, Titanic, Avatar, Troy, The Amazing Spider-man)
    1. (tie) Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Gladiator, Pearl Harbor, Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2, MW2, Black Hawk Down, The Last Samurai, The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, upcoming Man of Steel)
    and
John Williams (Star Wars series, Superman 1978, ET, Schindler's List, Munich, the Olymics theme, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Memoirs of a Geisha, Lincoln, War Horse)

If you love Disney and their songs then there is no doubt you love Alan Menken, he is the magician behind the magical songs of Disney from Mermaid to Tangled, he is also the one behind my childhood songs of amazingness.
James Horner is just amazing with Titanic and Apollo 13, the 2 movies almost made me cry (ok, Titanic...I cried) His best one in Titanic is My Heart Will Go On and the Apollo 13 is Splashdown where you can feel the joy, cheers, and happiness success just by listening to the music; also he did a great job scoring the Rocketeer especially the Main Title where you just imagine like you are flying high up in the sky with calmness.
Hans Zimmer and John Williams are my Top 1 because they are both awesome! Hans Zimmer is awesome with dark themed action scores like The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception, he is a great partnered with Nolan.
I guess everyone who likes musical scores will like John Williams from Star Wars, which, in my opinion, is the Best Score Ever!!! We both know he is the music behind most of Spielberg's works and Lucas' works.

    • ANSWER:
Agree with John Williams, not just the tunes but his scores are very inventive. Dennis Nedry steals the embryos from Jurassic Park is an example, totally funky. His predecessors from the 1940/1950 period wrote fabulous music - have a listen to Franz Waxman's suite from Prince Valliant on you tube, unashamedly slushy but full of fun, brilliant brass writing.
Clint Mansell wrote the score to Moon, the main theme is incredibly simple and effective. He's written other movie scores but the Moon music is stunning. Youtube - Moon Welcome to lunar industries, three year stretch. Get past the cello solo around 2 minutes, after the theme starts on piano. Once you've heard it you will recognise it again and again when it pops up on tv programmes. It's a sticker!

I was a professional musician and have played many great works. I frequently listen to film music because it is SO fabulous, well written and often very clever.

  6. QUESTION:
What were the major medical achievements of the 1950's?

can anyone tell me a website where i can get more info?

    • ANSWER:
Because of the research I did for my Ph.D., I too have to vote for the development of the first polio vaccine by Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh. In order to study the late effects of polio in people who had the disease as children, I needed to look through all the surviving medical records for polio cases diagnosed and treated in Allegheny County, PA, in the early 1950's. The year 1952 saw the single highest number of cases, there were a few in 1955, and none at all after that. Dr. Salk's vaccine was proven effective in a nation-wide testing program in 1954 and given to almost all American children the following year. This ended the period of epidemic polio in the U.S., during which parents were terribly fearful for their children during the annual polio season (late summer). Families having a child sick with polio were shunned by their relatives and neighbors. Children were not allowed to go to neighborhood swimming pools or the movies during August and September. Polio- stricken children ranging in age from less than a year to 15 or so were isolated in hospital wards and not allowed to see their parents, sometimes for weeks. One child who had been only mildly ill in the morning died later that day in the hospital elevator. The March of Dimes poster child and the iron lung were symbols of a disease feared then as much as HIV/AIDS is today.

The Salk vaccine changed all that in a very short time. Salk himself was the hero of the day (he tested the vaccine on his own children before testing its effects on children who'd already had the disease). Some of the polio survivors I located using the comparatively little amount of information in their old hospital records told me that they vividly remembered the smell of Salk's laboratory monkeys which were housed in part of the same hospital. People of a certain age still think of the conquest of polio the same way they thought about the moon landings fifteen years later. I remember a celebrity telling an inteviewer that one of the most moving moments in his life happened when his daughter tugged on his pant leg and said "Daddy, what's polio?"

The development of the Salk vaccine and later the Sabin oral vaccine were the result of the work of a relatively small number of dedicated scientists supported by a national effort (the March of Dimes) to raise money for a cause everybody could believe in. The polio vaccine work laid a foundation for the development of vaccines to prevent other viral diseases of childhood, including measles, mumps, German measles, and most recently chickenpox. Offhand, nothing else occurs to me as a more significant contribution to the public health in that era (note that antibiotics such as penicillin, another medical "miracle", were first introduced during World War II in the 1940's).

The polio survivors have lived on to the present day, some still requiring mechanical breathing apparatus and many still with their legs in metal braces. Unfortunately, many of them are now experiencing a post-polio syndrome of unexpected, gradually progressive new muscle weakness and pain occurring after long periods of stability. This seems to be the result of residual damage to nerve cells that survived the original poliovirus infection, not to a late re-emergence of the virus itself, which is what happens in people who develop shingles many years after having had chickenpox. The polio survivors are still able to remind us of what it was like to live at a time of both great fear and great hope. One day they will all be gone; world-wide eradication of polio is very real possibility. American science backed by popular support was able to achieve something of special significance because it eliminated a threat to our children. Sometimes I wonder if we care as much about the health of our children today as we did then.

  8. QUESTION:
What type of figurative language is this? (10 points)?
your huge face a dark moon split - a metaphor?

into that flowered-smothered standing ovation- idk what this is...

    Also what does this mean?

where the maid can wear mink and still be a maid- ?? I don't understand this....

These are from a poem called hattie mcdaniel arrives at coconut grove
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
First of all, you're not going to understand this poem at all if you don't know who Hattie McDaniel was: an African-American movie actor who won an Oscar in 1940 for her portrayal of the black maid, "Mammy," in "Gone With the Wind."

Many things in America, including the awards ceremony where she received her Oscar, were still racially segregated at that time.

OK, now to the quotations. "Your huge face a dark moon split": you've omitted the rest of the sentence. Out of context it makes little sense. The face (which is dark because of the color of her skin, and round like a moon -- McDaniel was fat) looks like a dark moon, split by her smile (if you'll just read the next line). This is a metaphor, obviously; her face is not literally a moon.

You "dk" what a standing ovation is? Really? It's when a crowd stands up and cheers for somebody. And a flower-smothered one would be a standing ovation during which people throw or hand flowers to the guest of honor.

The third one's meaning should be obvious once you know the background of the poem.

    • ANSWER:
      Made in New Jersey.

      Famous Firsts and Faces.

Besides being a famous place, New Jersey is renowned the world over as the birthplace and home of many famous ideas, innovations, and people.

For example, Charles Lindbergh was the first to fly solo across the Atlantic, but he got his start in Flemington. Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr., went from Montclair to the moon. Grover Cleveland of Caldwell proved you can be anything when you are born in New Jersey-he was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.

You might say that folks from New Jersey can really carry a tune. Sing along with Frank Sinatra (Hoboken), Connie Francis (Newark), Whitney Houston (Newark), Paul Simon (Hoboken), Bruce Springsteen (Freehold), Dionne Warwick (East Orange), or Jon Bon Jovi (Sayreville).

      Famous actors

According to Shakespeare, "all the world's a stage"-but many famous actors got their start on the stage in New Jersey. She liked the tasty jelly so much she started a business selling "Bog Sweet Cranberry Sauce." That was the beginning of the Ocean Spray company that still sells cranberry products today!

      First boardwalk and saltwater taffy

The world's first boardwalk was built in Atlantic City in 1870. Here's another fact to chew on: the first saltwater taffy was produced at the Jersey Shore in the 1870s as well.

      First electric guitar

New Jersey rocks! The famous Les Paul invented the first solid body electric guitar in Mahwah in 1940.

      First national historic park

A Face in the Crowd~You'll never look at Andy of Mayberry the same way again! Andy Griffith is brilliant in this!

Alfred Hitchcock classics: The Birds, Psycho (1960), Vertigo, Rear Window, Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers on a Train, etc.

I'm prejudiced about this producer's works and frequently urge people to see the b&w films of Val Lewton: Bedlam, I Walked with a Zombie (1943), Cat People (1942), The Curse of the Cat People, The Leopard Man, The Body Snatcher (1945), Isle of the Dead, The Seventh Victim. NOTE: "TBS" has nothing to do with the Jack Finney sci fi novel "The Body Snatchers". These films show that you do not need a big budget to make brilliant, classic films!

      ANIMATED:
      Spirited Away
      American Pop

  15. QUESTION:
How intelligent are computers now (2008)?
About 15-20 years ago, I was told that a computer had roughly the intelligence of a bumblebee. Since that is a few generations ago in computer life, roughly where are they at today?

And any references would be appreciated

    • ANSWER:
      I have never heard this.

What is the IQ of a bumble bee? How is that measured?

Computers were far more sophisticated that you think even 95+ years ago. Let's see.

We used computers to see things below the oceans surface (Sonar, 1913).
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonar

We used computers for movies (1940, "Fantasia")
      http://www.computerhistory.org/timeline/?year=1939

We used computers to figure out to blow the begebers out of things (atom bomb, 1945).
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_bomb

We used computers to launch satellites into orbit (1957).
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellites

We used computers to place man on the moon (1966).
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_armstrong

Computers were primary developed out of military purposes.

How old are you? I'm guessing that computers were around before your parents were born.

  16. QUESTION:
WOMEN ONLY - What are your favourite selection of great films?
I am attempting to write a book about films for women - not chick flicks as such but a good variety of films that women enjoy, including some of my personal favourites. I would really appreciate your input of favourite films and why you like them. Many thanks

    • ANSWER:
It's easy to list films, but how do you explain why you like a film? For me, that's practically impossible to explain in a few words, a few paragraphs or even a few pages why I like a particular film. That could be asking too much. I've been a film buff throughout my life, and I love many genres. I can give you an enormously long list of movies that I have watched multiple times; I mean that many of these I have viewed 100+ times.

  18. QUESTION:
does any one know of a book called when the wolfbane blooms?

    • ANSWER:
NO, but maybe this will help a little. In the old Werewolf movies (1940"s) there was this poem:

"Even a man who is pure in heart
And says his prayers by night
May become a wolf when the wolf bane blooms
And the Autumn moon is bright."

Have you tried "Better World books"?

      Case File - Ed Gein

      Introduction

This page is based on the true life murderer Ed Gein. He was an unusual character, born on a farm and raised by a domineering mother. In the space of a few years his entire family died and he was left to raise the farm all by himself. In the next few years he became a grave robber, a necrophiliac, a cannibal, and also took up arts and crafts in body parts. He is seen as one of the most weird and bizarre serial killers of the twentieth century, and maybe only Jeffrey Dahmer got as close to what Ed did. His crimes also inspired the movies Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs. This page is a documentation of his life and crimes.

      The Beginning

Ed Gein and his brother Henry were raised by a domineering mother on their 160-acre farm seven miles outside Plainfield, Wisconsin. She was a very religious woman with a protective attitude towards her boys and a definite conviction of sin. She discouraged them from women and kept them busy with farm work.

His alcoholic father died in 1940 and a few years later his brother Henry died in 1944, trapped while fighting a forest fire. Shortly thereafter his mother suffered her first stroke and in 1945 she had her second stroke from which she never recovered from, and Ed was left alone.

It was then that he sealed off the upstairs, the parlour, and his mother’s bedroom by boarding it off and set up his own quarters in the remaining bedroom, kitchen and shed of the big farmhouse. He stopped working the farm because a government soil-conservation program offered him a subsidy, which he augmented by his work as a handyman in the area.

      The Graveyard

In his spare time Ed read books on human anatomy and Nazi concentration camp experiments. He was quite interested by it all, especially the female anatomy. Alone in the farmhouse he thought endlessly about sex, until one day he saw a newspaper report of a woman who had been buried that day.

He enlisted the help of an old friend named Gus. Gus was a weird loner too, and quite definitely odd - he went to the asylum a few years later. Gus was Ed Gein’s trusted buddy, and agreed to assist Ed in opening a grave to secure a corpse for ‘medical experiments’. Gus helped dig the graves.

The first corpse came from a grave less than a dozen feet away from the last resting place of Gein’s mother.

Over the next ten years Ed did the same, checked the newspaper for fresh bodies, always visiting the graveyard at the time of a full moon, got the whole female corpse or just the parts he wanted, filled in the grave and took his winnings home.

      Ed Gein

His experiments with the dead bodies was bizarre. He would construct objects from the bones and skin and would store the organs in the fridge to eat later. He also committed acts of necrophilia on the bodies. He even dug up his own mothers corpse.

What Ed Gein didn’t reveal to Gus was his own growing desire to become a woman himself; it was for this reason he’d studied anatomy, thought about the possibilities of an ‘operation’ which would result in a change of sex, desired to dissect a female corpse and familiarise himself with its anatomy. The closest he would get to this is dressing up in his full woman bodysuit, complete with mask and breasts constructed entirely of human skin.

His collection of trophies grew, and so did the range of his experimentation and obsession.

Then Gus was taken away to the asylum, and Ed was all alone again. Ed thought that fresher bodies would be better for his collection so he turned to murder…

      The Murders

Ed Gein’s first victim was Mary Hogan. Mary Hogan was a 51-year-old divorcee who operated Hogan’s Tavern at Pine Grove, six miles from home. She was alone when he came to her on the cold afternoon of 8 December 1954. He shot her in the head with his 32-caliber revolver, placed her body in his pickup truck, and took her back to his shed.

A customer who dropped into the tavern found the place deserted, and a large bloodstain on the floor. A spent .32 cartridge lay near it. Bloodstains ran out the back door and into the parking lot, where they halted beside tyre tracks that looked like those of a pickup truck. It looked as if Mary Hogan had been shot and taken away.

Police were unable to find any clues to the disappearance. But a few weeks later, when a sawmill owner named Elmo Ueeck spoke of the disappearance to Ed Gein, Gein replied: ‘She isn’t missing. She’s at the farm right now.’ Ueeck could not even work up the interest to ask him what he meant.

      Ed Gein

There may have been other victims in the years that followed, but nothing definite is known about Gein’s murderous activities until that day on 16 November, 1957, when he shot and killed Bernice Worden in her hardware store on Plainfield’s Main Street. He used a .22 rifle from a display rack in the store, inserting his own bullet which he carried with him. Ed Gein shot and killed Bernice Worden, locked the store and took the body home in the store’s truck. Gein also removed the cash register, which contained in cash, but not because he wanted to commit robbery, but he later explained that he wanted to see how it worked, and fully intended to return it later.

Bernice Worden’s son, Frank, often assisted her in the store, but on this particular Saturday morning he’d gone deer hunting. When he returned in the late afternoon he discovered the store to be closed with the lights still on and his mother missing, also the cash register was gone. There was blood on the floor.

A local garage attendant told him that he had seen the store truck driving away at about 9.30 that morning.

Frank Worden served as deputy sheriff in the area and immediately alerted the sheriff, Art Schley, and reported the circumstances. He checked the record of sales transactions made that morning. One of them was for half a gallon of antifreeze. Worden remembered that Ed Gein had stopped by the previous evening at closing time and said he’d be back the next morning for antifreeze. Ed had also asked Worden if he intended to go hunting the next day. Worden also recalled that Gein had been in and out of the store quite frequently the previous week.

Since the cash register was missing, it appeared that Gein had planned a robbery after finding a suitable time when the coast would be clear.

Worden told of his suspicions to the sheriff. The sheriff Art Schley and captain Lloyd Schoephoester set off for the farm, seven miles outside Plainfield…

      Gein’s Residence

The house was dark and Ed Gein was absent, so acting on a hunch, they drove to a store in West Plainfield where Gein usually purchased groceries. Gein was there as he’d just had dinner with the proprietor and his wife. He was just about to leave in his truck.

The sheriff halted him, and asked him to get into the police car for questioning. Gein told of how he thought someone had tried to frame him for Bernice Worden’s death. Sheriff Schley took Ed Gein into custody, Schley had not mentioned Bernice Worden’s death.

Sheriff Schley and Captain Schoephoester returned to the house with other officers. The doors to the farmhouse were locked, but the door to the side shed at the rear of the house opened when Schley pushed it with his foot. It was night time and since the farm had no electricity, the sheriff had to use a torch. It revealed a naked corpse of a woman hanging upside down from a crossbeam, the legs spread wide apart, and a long slit running from the genitals almost to the throat. But the throat, like the head, was missing. The genitals and the anus were also missing. Bernice Worden had been disembowelled like that of a deer.

      Ed Gein's House

There was no electricity in the dark house so they conducted their inspection with oil lamps, lanterns, and flashlights.

The place looked like it had not been clean or tidied in years, there were piles of rubbish everywhere. The few rooms that weren’t nailed off were littered with books, old papers, magazines, utensils, tin cans, cartons and a lot of other junk.

What those police officers also found in that house is in the extreme. In the house they found - two shin bones, four human noses, a quart can converted into a tom-tom by skin stretched over both top and bottom, a bowl made from the inverted half of a human skull, nine ‘death masks’ (from the well preserved skin from the faces of women), ten female heads with the tops sawn off above the eyebrows, bracelets of human skin, a purse made with a handle of human skin, sheath for a knife made in human skin, a pair of leggings made from human skin, four chairs with the seats being replaced by strips of human skin, a shoe box containing nine salted vulvas of which his mothers was painted silver, a hanging human head, a lampshade covered with human skin, a shirt made of human skin, a number of shrunken heads (Ed always joked that he had a collection of shrunken heads), two skulls for Gein’s bedposts, a pair of human lips hanging from string, Ed’s full woman body suit constructed with human skin and complete with mask and breasts, Bernice Worden’s heart in a pan on the stove, and the refrigerator which was stacked with human organs.

The bodies of 15 different women had been mutilated to provide Gein’s trophies. It is also said that sometimes Gein brought house gifts of fresh venison to his neighbours although Gein said he had never shot a deer in his life.

      The End

Gein was in a series of examinations at the Central State Hospital for the Criminally insane. He was proven insane. The reasons for his actions were seen; he loved his mother but he hated her, so that is why he killed older women. It is said that Mary Hogan had more of a passing resemblance to his mother.

      Ed Gein

Gein denied being a cannibal or necrophiliac, but he did admit to grave robbing.

The case created a sensation because of the true nature of the crime. Thousands of people drove to Plainfield to get a look at the 'murder farm'. Eventually the place was burned down by the Plainfield citizens as they regarded it as a place of evil.

At Christmas, 1957, Gein was judged insane and he was committed to Waupan State Hospital for a life sentence. Gein died of cancer on 26 July 1984, at the age of 78. He was buried back in Plainfield next to the graves of his family.

      Ed Gein's Gravesite

      Ed Gein's Gravesite

      Mystery

There is also the mystery of Ed’s brother, Henry. It is said that Ed killed Henry so he could be more alone with his mother. In some sources it says that Henry was found dead in the Gein barn or was killed trying to put out a fire that had got the barn; but in others it says that Henry died while fighting a forest fire, and got trapped and was either burned or died from smoke inhalation. Whatever is the case the motive for Ed to kill Henry is not substantiated. He did love his mother, but he killed women who were old and looked like his mother, so why would he kill his brother just to get more of his mothers love? It is still unknown if Ed Gein did kill his brother and it quite possible he did; Ed was definitely a twisted character.

      Ed Gein

One possible early story of Ed Gein is that in 1942. Ed was invited over to his nearest neighbours house, the Bankses. A female relative of the Bankses was in the house, and was wearing shorts, Ed couldn’t keep his eyes off her legs. Later that night a man broke into the woman’s house and grabbed her small son by the throat, asking him where his mother had gone. The intruder fled before the boy could tell him anything. The boy thought he had recognised Ed Gein as the man.

Some other stories of possible victims of Gein is an eight-year-old girl who went missing in 1947 and a fifteen-year-old who had disappeared on her way home from babysitting in 1953. The babysitter’s bloodstained clothes were found but no body had turned up. In Ed’s house there were also some body parts which didn’t prove to come from that of his grave robbing or 2 known murders.

      The Movies

Ed Gein’s activities certainly inspired the literature and film industry. Because of the true nature of the crimes it gave Hollywood a lot of ideas to work on.

One such early film was Psycho. Based on the Robert Bloch novel and made into a Hitchcock film. The connection being the overpowering mother and horror of the film, it made it one of the first of a kind. Robert Bloch got most of the ideas for Psycho from Ed Gein's life.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was one movie lightly based on Ed Gein. The story is about a group of travelling teen’s who stumble on a horror house. The house’s residents are a family of weird homicidal cannibals who also like grave robbing and constructing furniture made of bones and skulls alike. The lead bad guy is called ‘Leatherface’. Leatherface likes chasing teen’s around with his chainsaw and wearing the human face mask of his victims. There are about four Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies each with the teen’s trying to escape the deadly Leatherface. The connection is mostly with the house, graverobbery and the cannibalism.

One more recent and Academy Award winning film is Silence of the Lambs. It’s about an FBI agent who’s tracking down a serial killer and to find him she must get the help of an intelligent cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lector. The serial killer she’s trying to track down is called ‘Buffalo Bill’ because he likes to kill women and make clothes of their skin, also he wants to be a woman, hence the skin costume like that of Gein. There are a lot of connections to this film and Ed Gein, being with the skin clothes, cannibalism, and Buffalo Bill being a transvestite.

      Conclusion

Ed Gein was definitely one of the most weird murderers of this century. Even though he did kill only two women and suspected for the disappearance of others he is seen as one of the worlds infamous killers. Its what was found in Gein’s house that made him instantly infamous in the murder world.

    • ANSWER:
      Now, voyager (1940)

"Don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars."
      ---Bette Davis

  24. QUESTION:
Thoughts on the name 'June' for a girl ?
What do you think of the name June on a girl?

What are some good middle names that aren't filler (ex-- Marie, Claire, Elizabeth, Rose)?

What do you think of June Cadence "Junie"?

    • ANSWER:
I'd prefer June as a middle name
...as with all single-syllable names, it's very limiting for nns or terms of endearment (Junie Moon, as in the title of the movie, is rather cloying)
...I think of 1940's actresses like June Allyson, June Haver, and June Havoc or the June Taylor dancers

It was ranked in the top 100 from 1915-1941 and dropped out of ranking completely from 1987-2007.
It broke back in to the top 1000 in 2008 (867) and jumped up to #662 in 2009 so, you can see, it's making a comeback.

Since it's such a simple name, I think you could be a bit more daring with the middle name:

      June Althea
      June Bedelia
      June Cosetta
      June Danae
      June Fiona
      June Keeley
      June Loretta
      June Marisol
      June Patrice
      June Rosalie
      June Susanna
      June Victoria

The word cadence is a musical term referring to the beat of a rhythmic movement.
As a name, it's right up there with other nouns randomly picked from the dictionary like apple or pilot.

  33. QUESTION:
    Gene Autry movie song?
As best I know, in one of his movies, Gene Autry sings a song titled "Leaning on the old top rail" ( in the big corral).

What was the title of this movie ?

    • ANSWER:
The song LEANIN’ ON THE OLE TOP RAIL is from the movie Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride (1940)

      http://www.geneautry.com/geneautry/motionpictures/filmography/ridetenderfootride.html

      Lyrics:
Leanin' on the ole top rail in the big corral
Lookin down the twilight trail for my long lost pal,
How he sang when he sprang on his ole mustang
And rode away down the track by my shack
He said, "I'll be back another day,"
Now the moon is shining pale on a lonesome gal,
Leaning on the ole top rail in the big corral.

  36. QUESTION:
    swing dancing...movies?
Hey i was wondering if there are any movies from around the 40's that has a lot of swing dancing and/or is about swing dancing?

    (and dont say swing kids)

    thanks

    • ANSWER:
There weren't any full movies that were exclusively about swing dancing, but there were lots of movies that featured some aspects of swing dancing in the plot.

If you are going to start anywhere, you should start with the best! "Hellzapoppin'" (1941) features what's considered the greatest swing dance routine ever capture on film!
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTg5V2oA_hY

Then there's "Groovie Movie" (1944), which is a short (played before the beginning of a movie) about the Jitterbug, and is definitly one of the great swing dance clips around.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y82S3z6sKiM

The movie "Buck Privates" (1941) staring Abbot and Costello, features The Andrews Sisters and some of the best swing dancers in a few scenes.

"A Day At The Races" (1937), a Marx Brothers film, featured some of the first real swing dancing in any movie.

You should also check out "Don't Knock the Rock" from 1956, which also features a lot of swing dancing, before Rock n' Roll took over and swing dancing was forgotten.

You should also search for film clips from the Savoy Ballroom and the Harvest Moon Ball Contests.

Also, check out the Disney Cartoon "All The Cat's Join In", which is all about swing dancers!

      I hope that helps!

  37. QUESTION:
    a literary descrption of zorro?
based on the novel "The Curse of Capistrano", which i do not have a copy of, can anyone give me a description of zorro's costume. including his mask, hat, cape, clothes, and weapons.

    • ANSWER:
Have you never seen Zorro? Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones made two movies about this hero. Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. played him in 1927, and Tyrone Power played him in 1940. Guy Williams played him for Disney, which is where these lyrics originate:

      Out of the night
When the full moon is bright
Comes the fox that's known as Zorro!

      Zorro means "fox" in Spanish.

  38. QUESTION:
I Still can't remember the name of this movie....UGGHH!!?
A couple of weeks ago I asked a question about a movie my sister and I use to watch as kids. It was about a boy who stumbled into a often dark, but magical world. I believe he got to the world through a golden apple....I THINK. This apple was given to him by some old hag off the street in the real world. Anyways, he ended uo getting a cloak that would turn him invisible when he would throw it over his body. He also got a sword that took a hundred years to forge by this guy who was a slave blacksmith to the main bad guy in the movie. He also forged swords for the bad guy. This sword, which took so long to forge, was the only sword in existence that would pierce the bad dude's stone heart. Anyways, he saves the day and all is well. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS MOVIE!!!!! HELP!!!! My brain hurts from trying to figure it out.

    • ANSWER:
THE THIEF OF BAGDAD - 1924

      or

      The Thief of Bagdad (1940)

A story with the theme ‘happiness must be earned’ focuses on a common thief who falls in love with a princess, and this love motivates him to change his ways in order to win the princess.
But first he has to prove himself worthy, and this leads him on a fantastic adventure through a valley of fire, a cavern of enchanted trees, to a citadel of the moon which he reaches on a winged horse, and finally a cloak of invisibility which hides the greatest magic of all. As if this were not enough to enchant the audience, there is also the traditional flying carpet, a golden apple that restores life and health, and an all-seeing crystal ball to stir and inspire even the dullest imagination!

      below are links to both

I left out outright comedies though some listed do have funny lines in them, as do most films. I didn't list any musicals either. I did include some science fiction, horror and fantasy. It's very difficult to choose because I have so many favorite, "fantastic" movies. I've been watching films for most of my 57 years, so I've gathered a lot of favorites, some more offbeat than what I listed.

  42. QUESTION:
Which character in the Harry Potter movies has been played by both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon?

    • ANSWER:
Now that I have finished shovelling out from the 48 cm snowstorm we had on Friday that virtually shut down our city, I can get back to answering your questions.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (1845-1997) is a fictional character in the Harry Potter series of books by J.K. Rowling. Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for most of the series.

Dumbledore is described as tall and thin, with long silver hair and a long beard. He has blue eyes, a very long and crooked nose (looking as if it had been broken at least twice) and long fingers. He wears half-moon spectacles. He once claimed to have a scar above his left knee, its provenance unknown, in the shape of a map of the London Underground.

Considered the most powerful wizard in the world, Dumbledore is benevolent and eccentric, an archetypal good wizard in the style of Merlin. It is said that he was the only wizard Lord Voldemort ever feared.

In the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Dumbledore was played by Richard Harris, who died in 2002 of Hodgkin's disease. Michael Gambon took on the role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), and is filming for the role in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which is under production for release in 2007.

Patrick McGoohan was originally offered the role for the first movie before Harris, but turned it down due to health reasons. All three actors are Irish. It is unknown if there is a reason for this, but it is possibly just a coincidence.

Richard St. John Harris (October 1, 1930 – October 25, 2002) was an Irish actor, singer and songwriter.

He was featured on stage and in many films, and was perhaps best known for the film role of King Arthur in Camelot (1967) and for the portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He also played a British aristocrat and prisoner in A Man Called Horse (1970).

He was a notorious playboy and drinker, part of a rowdy generation of Irish and British actors that included Albert Finney, Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole.

In 1957, he married Elizabeth Rees-Williams, daughter of David Rees-Williams; they were divorced in 1969, and Elizabeth married another actor, Rex Harrison. Their three children are actor Jared Harris, actor Jamie Harris (born Tudor St. John Harris, but known as Jamie since childhood), and director Damian Harris (who has a son named Marlowe, born 2002, with Australian actress Peta Wilson).

Richard Harris married secondly the American actress Ann Turkel, who was 16 years his junior, but that marriage also ended in divorce.

He was a member of the Knights of Malta, and was also knighted by the predominantly Lutheran country of Denmark in 1985.

Harris died of Hodgkin's disease in 2002 at the age of 72, shortly before the U.S. premiere of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He was in a restaurant at the time and as he was carried out on a stretcher, informed the people queueing to go into the restaurant that it was not the food that had killed him, retaining his sense of humour till the end. He would be replaced as Dumbledore by fellow Irish-born actor, Sir Michael Gambon.

Sir Michael John Gambon, CBE (born October 19, 1940), is an acclaimed Irish-born British actor who has worked in television, film and theatre.

Perhaps his most significant role in 2004, however, was Albus Dumbledore, Hogwart's headmaster in the third instalment of JK Rowling's franchise, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, taking over from Irish actor Richard Harris, who had died of Hodgkins disease. (Harris had also played Maigret on television four years before Gambon took that role.) Gambon reprised the role of Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was released in November 2005 in the UK and U.S.. He will return to the role again in the fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, to be released in 2007. Gambon admits to not having read the Harry Potter novels, so he is not "upset" when a significant story change occurs in the conversion to film.

Beautiful~I claimed just this evening that I would never suggest this film because I dislike it so much. However, it does show what a very good friend will do, even when the other half of the friendship is extremely poor and scarcely seems worthy of such devotion. Joey Lauren Adams portrays a friend of remarkable patience and understanding, even accepting the role of mother.

  45. QUESTION:
Older movies that you feel I must see...?
Well, I recently got netflix and now there are so many choices that I can choose from that I don't know what to watch. I've recently got into watching older movies that are classics/favorites that I may have heard of, but never knew anything about.

I watched Kramer v. Kramer, Taxi Driver, A Streetcar Named Desire, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and Harold & Maude.

I've really enjoyed watching these movies and I wasn't sure I would, so I was wondering if there were any other older movies that were made before my time that I'm missing that were considered really good. I'm up for anything, even foreign, as long as it is older. I draw the line at silent movies though. I don't think I'm up for that.

    Thanks for suggestions.

  46. QUESTION:
    Im looking for a romance(perferably sad) story/movie/whatever.?
Well Im looking for a romance(perferably sad) story/movie/whatever.

ive Seen the Anime 'Full Moon wo Sagashite' I loved it because it was really romantic and sad. I cried so many times. It was the first anime i ever watched.. well the only anime ive watched.

    Well anyways any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
      Old black and white movies:
The Clock (very romantic and sad)
The Ghost and Mrs Muir (kind of romantic, sad-ish ending)
      Wuthering Heights (very romantic_
As Clouds Roll By (corny but good for a cry)

      1950's (I think - could be 40's)
High Society (with music) (no crying, cutely romantic)
and its "twin", Philadelphia Story (kind of funny, romantic, no crying)

      1960's:
Love with the Proper Stranger (maybe late 50's, romantic, cute)
      Breakfast atTiffany romantic but dated)
Dr Zhivago (whoa - very romantic, sad, epic)
Cinderella with Lesley Anne Warren as Cinderella (pure romance)

      1970's
Romeo and Juliet w/ Olivia Hussey (maybe late 60's)
Love Story (super corny but apparently made some people cry)
The Way We Were (not great movie but romantic and kind of sad)
Bobby Deerfield (romantic, maybe a little crying)

      1980's
Moonstruck (romantic and cute, no crying)

      1990's
Beauty and the Beast (animated but very romantic)
You've Got Mail (romantic and slightly moving, crying unlikely)
Sleepless in Seattle(romantic, more moving, crying unlikely)

Not sure about year (late 1990's/early 00's):
Titanic (potential of making some people cry)
My Best Friend's Wedding (romantic, nice)
      Notting Hill (romantic, cute)
      Runaway Bride (romantic, cute, nice)

Don't forget all the animated films:
Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Swan Princess, or any of the "princess" movies.. Shrek even had a touch of romance in it.

Finally, if you want to cry: TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (!!!)
      and the animated, non-romance:
      LAND BEFORE TIME
      BRIAN'S SONG

Also, depending on your mood you could dig up some old 1950's doo-wopp romantic songs or some old Lettermen songs. If old fashioned music isn't your thing you could always get the love songs from any animated Disney film or Broadway play. They're not for someone who's looking for something cool, but there's always the chance one of these beautifully written songs could just make you cry (if you're looking to be moved).

Of the old movies (1930's/1940's) most of the Greer Garson movies are good and have some romance in them, although they usually have other things going on too. Katherine Hepburn movies tend to involve romance, although sometimes there's humor (Bringing Up Baby and Woman of the Year).

  49. QUESTION:
10 Major events that happened between 1940/45-2011?
Alright so I am just coming up a little bit short on ideas for this little time-line that i have to do for History. I love history to pieces but I go ripped off and put into Modern History rather then Ancient. I need 10 major from the times listed above and I need to give reasons as to why they are important (a little information would be nice).

I have already got the invention of Super Glue, Martin Luther King Jr's I have a Dream speech and also the invention of Space Invaders. I am debating putting in a serial killer and a horror movie because I don't know which one really, really shocked the world or changed things (i.e. the understanding of something to do with psychology). Do you think I should do 911 maybe? I am also looking for something positive, something to do with Medicine perhaps.

Thank you for your help :)
No I'm not on crack, my life just doesn't revolve around 9/11
Daniel Orozco: Not all important things involve war. I know it might seem that way but medical science sure as hell was important. You and I probably would have died or suffered from some sort of mental or physical damage without the technology that is around today.

    • ANSWER:
      Not necessarily in order here.

      9/11
Jonas Salk and the Polio vaccine
      Vietnam War
Apollo 11 lands on the Moon
      WWII
      JFK assasination
      Fall of the Soviet Union
      Civil Rights movement
      Cuban Missile Crisis
      Challenger disaster
      Dolly the Sheep (Cloning)

If any of them interest you than you can further research them yourself. This isn't a place to have other people do your homework for you but I dont mind sharing ideas.

      Good Luck

  50. QUESTION:
What was the name of the movie where the fat guy said "I wish I had a swing like that in my back yard"?
I am trying to think of the name of a movie I saw as a kid and its driving me crazy. The movie was made in the 80s and was set somewhere between 1940 to 1960 I guess. I can't remember a whole lot about it. I know there was a fat guy in his late teens early twenties who said about an attractive girl "I wish I had a swing like that in my back yard" as she walked away. This same girl also undresses at one point and the main characters in the movie watch through her bedroom window. The main characters are a small group of boys aged about 13. I think that some of the boys have older brothers who are going off to fight in a war, probably WWII. I know that there is a scene where there is a big dance also. Anyway, hopefully that is enough for someone to know what movie I am thinking of. Also, the title may have the word "moon" in it, but I am far from certain about that. I have already looked on imdb.com so please don't suggest that. thanks.

    • ANSWER:
The only movie I can find with that line in it is Along Came Polly.

new moon movie 1940
