Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
what are some good movies to watch in serbian?
I want to watch some serbian movies (preferably in serbian with english subtitles) on youtube, and I know that youtube has some but I'm not sure what to watch. I like romance movies, but it doesn't have to be. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
Tears for sale is pretty funny. (AKA : Charleston & Vendetta)

(Чарлстон за Огњенку, Čarlston za Ognjenku, literal translation Charleston for Ognjenka)

  2. QUESTION:
What do you think is the scariest horror movie within the last 10 years?

    • ANSWER:
'Deadgirl' 2008 was the scariest movie I watched from start to beginning. It was so sick and grotesque- it gave me this weird, uneasy feeling while I was watching it. I don't know if it scared me as much as it shocked me and at the end of it my friend and I were speechless. 'Antichrist' 2009 was pretty disturbing as well but I skipped through some of the boring parts so I don't count it, I don't scare easily with horror movies so I'm rating them on shock value and showing me something I haven't seen before.
Here are some other movies that were almost equally demented- not all of them are within the las ten years but they are messed up:

      High Tension aka Switchblade Romance(2003)
      Ils(2006)
      Inside(2007)
      Frontier(s)(2007)
      Martyrs(2008)
      Lake Mungo(2008)
The Last House on the Left(1972)
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom(1975)
      Funny Games(1997)
      The Girl Next Door(2007)
      I Spit on Your Grave(2010)
      A Serbian Film(2010)

  3. QUESTION:
Movies that inspired, moved or taught you something important?
    Hello :)

I am someone who loves films, and their power to make us see life in different ways, teach us important lessons, and make us reflect on ourselves and our society. Which movies have inspired, moved or taught you something you feel is valuable to you?

If you could please also state why.

Your answer would be greatly appreciated, thank-you 😀

    • ANSWER:
There are many. Here are some of them very much remembered by me : -

      1) Dark Knight : - This movie is number one on my list. It inspired me to become a 'human'. That movie tells you how the humans should be and how they are now. Bruce Wayne's story became very tragic in the movie. That Superhero was not just for name, fame and glory. That Batman is the most passionate and idealistic Superhero I've ever seen in a movie.

He is challenged and tested mentally for what it takes really to be a Super-Hero. : -

There will be situations of urgency when you have to break your honest rules. Would you break it?

There will be times when you have to lie to everyone, in order to inspire them and make them honest. Would you do it?

Batman does that. He never breaks his rules, even though Joker tries to breaks his moral heavily.

But, Batman for false takes the name of a killer, for saving Harvey Dent's reputation, and not breaking Gotham's Hope. This is the real Super-Hero. I still watch and admire very much all the scene between Bruce and Alfred. Whether from Batman Begins, Dark Knight (especially) or from Dark Knight Rises.

      2) Forrest Gump : - My second inspiring movie is Forrest Gump. Because it gives life to the Oscar Wilde quote viz. - "You must go were Life takes you." Forrest doesn't cares what people think or say of him. He continues to do what he is doing. His childhood girlfriend Jenny also hates him. But at last Jenny understands Forrest when she is dying.

      3) Underground (1995) : - I don't know if you know about this movie. It is a surrealistic movie on Yugloslavia - which was the country, and spans over three or four decades.Movie beautifully stages themes like betrayal , politics , horrors of war, loss of innocence, romance - all these with a great humor. So it a black-comedy or a tragic-comedy.And the most important theme it reveals is spoken in the movie itself during its climax. Here is that line : - "No War is a War Until a brother kills a brother."
It is a masterpiece from all directions. Here is its jovial trailer (the song in serbian language is also good) : - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNtTJTJY6c4

      4) Lord of the Rings : - I am speaking of all the movies as well as novels. I respect and like it very much, both movies and novels. But to me, novels and movies both have their distinguished places of respect. In Novels, you can exaggerate your story in any manner and length you like. Good Novels touch people's heart because of its words. While a movie is a entirely different from a novel. A good movie melts audiences' hearts because of the makers' (chiefly the director , screenwriters, researchers and cinematographers) vision to that movie. The second important factor for a movie to work is it's music. A Music of a movie, becomes a guide of 'how you will watch your movie'. Music is the first impression of your movie.Performances are the third most important factor of any movie. If a movie is adopted from a novel, that only making a movie precise to novel's plot, doesn't makes a good movie. Instead a movie is a very big subject.LOTR is a very fine example of a screenplay/movie adapted from a novel. One can never imagine J.R.R Tolkien's stories would be represented in such an emotionally great scale.

      5) Titanic : - It inspired me, because James Cameron's version of a love-story became an archetype of future love-stories. James Cameron and James Horner's collaboration presented such an ethereal and heavenly story upon us, making us want to go in Titanic itself (not for sinking). And especially that scene - 'FLYING SCENE' became all lovers' favorite, Worldwide. Cameron (after Titanic) I think, understood his skill and James Horner's importance, and he again repeated it in 'Avatar' - and the result was again - a very beautiful heavenly World represented to us.'Avatar' also has a scene in which all the Na'avi are climbing the Hallelujah Mountain. That scene makes me want to go to 'Pandora'

      6) Doctor Zhivago and 2001 A Space Odyssey : - These 2 movies concerns their 2 directors David Lean and Stanley Kubrick. I like these 2 movies very much because they are very long, very slow in their pace, very much detailed in their structure (especially 2001 A Space Odyssey) and yet both these movies doesn't fails to please whoever sees them. Both David Lean and Stanley Kubrick had their own ways of presenting a 'story'. Lean was criticized for his very long lengths of movies (Lawrence of Arabia must be the longest movie ever made) While Kubrick was known to put too much detail in his each and every scene, that the main goal of the story seem to get lost. But when both of their movies finish you feel a certain deep satisfaction inside you, winning over your boredom. I like all of David Lean / Stanley Kubrick movies. They prove that it doesn't matter if your movie is 3 hours or 5 hours long. What matters is how you represent your story.

  4. QUESTION:
What's the best book you've ever read? What is it about and why do you like it?
Just looking for some good reads.

    • ANSWER:
There are three of them and all three are different, so I cannot decide which one's the best.

      1. Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake

What made it enjoyable is the very style of writing, Mervyn Peake was a true artist. He was actually a painter, which can be seen in Gormenghast. The descriptions are beautiful and the characters are complete, human beings bound by madness and tragedy. I'll adore this book till the day I die.

      2. Seduction by Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz)

      I. Adore. This. Book. It's truly a masterpiece, one of the best books she has written so far. It's a romance/historical novel with erotic elements. I enjoyed in it because the characters were perfect, the man known as the Devil and his future bride, a feminist who claims that men have lost their honor. I strongly recommend it to anyone.

      3. The book Malteški šišmiš, by a Serbian writer Ljubomir Damnjanović. The title can be translated as The bat of Malta, and it's about a Serbian vampire family. They are the grandfather, father and son - typical Balkan men, whose family curse is that they die too early and rise from the grave as vampires. The main character is the youngest of them, who is given a task to find the statue of a bat that could give vampires the ability to resist sunlight. His life is complicated, he and his ancestors are rude, ignorant in a way and extremely perverted. You don't know which one is a greater trickster than the others, but they all care about each other and love their family - they're a true vampire mafia, lol ^___^ I enjoyed A LOT in the witty sentences, funny characters, elements of fantasy which were so well organized that it's simply amazing how there's only 500 copies of the book out there :( The scene when vampire ancestors watch a porn movie of newer production - priceless!

  7. QUESTION:
Can anybody please list me some duet songs?

    • ANSWER:
Ok, here are my favs :

Probably my all-time favourite is Diana Ross' and Lionel Ritchie's "Endless Love", I love the way this song flows and the way their voices blend is simply perfect. There's the classic : Barbra Straisand's and Ray Charle's : "It's crying time", then there's one of my favs "A whole new world" sung by Jasmin & Alladin from the Disney movie. If you're up for something a bit faster with more energy to it - then Iggy Pop's "Candy" feat. Katie Pearson is my choice. If you want some meditative romance - then Kate Bush & Peter Gabriel's : "Don't give up" should do. Bryan Adams and Mel C did a great song - "When you're gone". Counting Crows feat. Vannesa Carlton "Big Yellow Taxi" is great. I like country's Kenny Rogers' and Dolly Parton's "Islands in the sun". "I've had the time of my life" from Dirty dancing is a classic as well. Don't forget - Sony & Cher's, (or UB40's and Cher's as well) - "I got you babe", and for that classic jazzy sound - Natalie Cole's and Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" is not to be forgot. Sladjana Milosevic's and Dado Topic's "Princeza" was a Serbian contender for eurovision, I think this is one of the best duet songs. Yeah - if you're openminded You could try - Madame Piano feat. Franco Massi - "Eternal Love", yeah - Eros Ramazzoti feat. Tina Turner - "Cosa Della vita" is definitely not to be overlooked. Ha, Camron's "Hey ma" can't be tagged as a duet in a classical way, but I think it's one of the best duet's rap/hop scene had to offer. Yeah, Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli did a "Prayer" performance together - you can check it out as well.

  13. QUESTION:
    Gross horror movie scenes?
Do you know of any gross horror movie scenes? Like in The Amityville Horror the little girl sticks the babysitters finger in the bullet hole in her head? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Antichrist(2009)- features scenes with genital mutilation.
Deadgirl (2008)- the movie is about these guys who rape and kill a girl over and over, but she doesn't die. I don't think I need to explain any further.
A Serbian Film(2010)- the whole movie. I'm not even going to explain what its about but good luck finding it legally.
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom(1975)- the title says it all.
Cannibal Holocaust(1980)- I'd say cannibalism is pretty gross.
The Last House on the Left(1972)- contains the most realistic and disturbing rape scene I have ever viewed.
The 'Faces of Death' videos are pretty gross- they show what is alleged 'real deaths.' Also tough to find.

The following films also have very disturbing and gross scenes:
      High Tension aka Switchblade Romance(2003)
      Inside(2007)
      Frontier(s)(2007)
      Martyrs(2008)
      Lake Mungo(2008)
      Funny Games(1997)
      The Hills Have Eyes(2006)
      The Girl Next Door(2007)
      The Human Centipede (First Sequence)(2009)
      I Spit on Your Grave(2010)

  15. QUESTION:
Horror Movie Recommendations! Preferably Those Into The Disturbing/Gorehound Genre?
So I have seen MANY horror films that I define as disturbing, however I am at a loss because none of these films truely horrified me, here is a small list to give you an indication of what horror I am into..

    Cannibal Holocaust (great!)
    A Serbian Film (pretty good)
Martyrs (have the DVD, have not watched yet)
    High Tension (creepy and great)
Audition (loved it, friend stole my DVD...)
    Aftermath (Too short)
Guinea Pig ( No story but amazing gore.. a little too amazing gore... D= )
Cannibal (cant believe someone VOLUNTEERED for that...)
    Grave Encounters (awesome)
    Evidence (Awesome)
    The Children (great!)
Rise of Leslie Vernon (awesome and rather unique)
A Night in the Woods (somewhat scary..)
    VHS (Amazing found footage anthology)

There are SO MANY others that dont come to mind but any movies like these.. I do rather enjoy found footage such as home movies, exibit a, evidence, vhs, et cetra, and I do enjoy a challange of watching a brutal creepy blood splatter movie at times... But yeah, so thank you all in advance for your time

@Double N- are you nuts?- dying young is a romantic movie and The Human Centipede is horror. At least google the topic before you answer something!

@Libation Bearing - I had already seen Walk to remember and beaches! They both were also nice romantic movies. Do you have any other names?

  19. QUESTION:
Have you seen an absolutely terrible movie recently?
I just watched The Girl Next Door (2007).This movie had been on my hard drive for some time so i decided to watch it and its one of the most disturbing/worst movies i've ever seen. The movie is based on true events but it was unnecessary to make a movie about it my opinion. Two sisters get tortured in the most brutal ways for no reason whatsoever by their own Aunt. The girls combined were subjected to multiple beating with whips,a lit cigarette stubbed on them, their skin burnt with a blow torch, their skin slit multiple times with a knife, stripped naked forcefully in front of the boys, gagged and tied up.
I'm a big fan of horror movies but i wasn't expecting a movie like that.
IMDB gave the movie a rating of 6.9, i give this movie a big fat ZERO.
I did say the girls *combined* the younger one had her pants pulled down and was beaten multiple times.
The older one was slit with a knife, had a cigarette stubbed on her and more shocking abuse...
I should've turned it off before the movie ended.

    • ANSWER:
Oh yes The Girl Next Door is truly demented. The WORST I've seen lately is Antichrist(2009) it was just terrible. Fans of the movie go on about all this 'symbolism' but I thought it was unnecessary. If you can make it to the gore in the movie- without fast forwarding through the slow and depressingly boring grieving the couple goes through- it is so grotesque and disturbing. There is no pay off- just shock value. I give it one star- and only because I give props to Willem Dafoe showing his a$s for most of the movie.

Here is a list of other disturbing movies I've seen:

      Cannibal Holocaust(1980)
The Last House on the Left(1972)
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom(1975)
      Funny Games(1997)
      High Tension aka Switchblade Romance(2003)
      Inside(2007)
      Frontier(s)(2007)
      Martyrs(2008)
      Lake Mungo(2008)
      Deadgirl(2008)
      The Human Centipede (First Sequence)(2009)
      I Spit on Your Grave(2010)
      A Serbian Film(2010)

  20. QUESTION:
Wha's a movie that you refuse to watch?
It can be a comedy, romance, thriller, doco, etc.

For me, I refuse to watch 120 Days Of Salo and Hostel. Those who are familiar with those movies will probably understand.

BQ: Saw or Transformers? (the first one only)
BBQ: What's a movie that you think people should never watch? (it can just be a film you have an uncontrollable hatred for)
Whoops, made a spelling mistake. 'What's' as opposed to 'Wha's'
Dan M: There is nothing to get in Eraserhead. You are right about it being trendy though. David Lynch has made far better movies (The Elephant Man, Lost Highway). Eraserhead has no point.
Prettykitty: I'm an atheist too but I was actually surprised at Passion Of The Christ, both how good it was and how violent it is.

    • ANSWER:
      SALO
      The Guinea Pig Series
      Irreversible...again
      Hostel 2
      Wolf's Creek
That Serbian Film thingy...not in this incarnation!
And that one where a couple in the woods encounter a group of young people...to utter catastrophic effects. Ain't happening. I can tell a 'Strangers' type ending when I see one. No thanks...

      BQ...can't make up my mind.

      BBQ...
      Revenge of the Sith
Birth of a Nation...but that is merely the sheerest veneer of wishful thinking in operation. With hate fast becoming a drug of choice here in the US...that's just downright unrealistic to even suggest such a thing.
The August Mordum Underground series...especially the young people of today....you can't take back those lost hours...and some of those images may haunt you...forever.

And for my brothers and sisters...how I wish you would not put such toxic waste in your heads.
      A Time to Kill (1996)
      Glory (1989)
      Rosewood (1997)
      She's Gotta Have It (1986)
      Blackhawk Down
      wishful thinking...I know.

  21. QUESTION:
Bosnia Film: "In the Land Of Blood And Honey" (2011)?
Angelina Jolie's directorial debut film about the 1990s Bosnia conflict. It reportedly features a "romance" between a Serbian army officer and a Bosnian Muslim woman captive.

If you've seen it, what were your impressions? Is it historically accurate? Is it well-made? Are the characters or the story line believable? How explicit or violent is this movie? (Does the film hold much back via editing or is it very graphic, leaving no doubts about the characters' motivations and what is happening to them?)

    Do you recommend it?

    Thank you!
Why did you like it or dislike it?

    • ANSWER:
not even closely accurate,it's a really lame movie. Do not watch it.

    • ANSWER:

the story line is believable since many women were raped in the war...but the two falling in love is a bit far fetched ..

-Im in the process of getting 'beauty in trouble'...is it any good?
-if anybody knows the name of the movie hollywood based ' the strangers' off of please let me know what its called. i saw it a few years ago it was in french i believe. it was waaay better.
-'a serbian film' i know its F***** up just from a review a friend gave me. made snuff films sound like a disney movie. but is it any good??? i dont want to subject my mind to that kind of thing unless there is some point to it.
