  2. QUESTION:
Does any one know some good Serbian movies?
So, I watched the movie A Serbian Film and I didn't like cuz it's sick! But I liked the acting and the directing, so I thought that a Serbian drama movie might be good.
So does any one know good Serbian drama movies?

    • ANSWER:
I enjoyed "Montenegro," directed by Dusan Makavejev. It's actually about Serbs living in Stockholm, Sweden, but it's good. Also by the same director, "Sweet Movie" is completely outrageous but funny.

  3. QUESTION:
Why did everyone say A Serbian Film was horrific?
Im 18 and watched and didn't think it was that bad. I thought The Human Centepede was harder to watch. Everything in the serbian movie was vague so it was hard to believe anything that happened. Even the rape scenes looked fake to me. You never saw a vagina in the movie nor a penis entering one. Like ive seen alot of porn , not child porn of course, and some of the ones ive seen were way disturbing than that movie.

    • ANSWER:
      It wasn't made by Jews

  4. QUESTION:
what is the song in the background of a serbian movie's trailer?
In the trailers for "a serbian movie", they play some kind of techno song. what is it?

    • ANSWER:
It's not techo. Its a dubstep. And the guy behind it is Djordje Miljenovic aka Sky Wikluh from the Bad Copy hip-hop trio.

  5. QUESTION:
what are some good movies to watch in serbian?
I want to watch some serbian movies (preferably in serbian with english subtitles) on youtube, and I know that youtube has some but I'm not sure what to watch. I like romance movies, but it doesn't have to be. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
Tears for sale is pretty funny. (AKA : Charleston & Vendetta)

(Чарлстон за Огњенку, Čarlston za Ognjenku, literal translation Charleston for Ognjenka)

  6. QUESTION:
Why are there not more pieces of serbian literature and movies translated to english?
Can anyone recommend their favorate serbian movie or book.

    • ANSWER:
Serbian literature is well covered in translation to many languages, not only English. I don't know where you live, but we have a lot of contemporary and classic pieces translated. Zoran Živković has had all his recent work translated to English and broadcast on BBC4 if you're into that kind of literature, SF.
Also, Dragan Velikić, David Albahari, Basara, Pavić, Momo Kapor (wonderful!) Danilo Kiš, Zoran Bognar and many many more - have all been translated. Charles Simić writes in English. If you're interested in a digest edition, I can highly recommend "A Millenium of Serbian Literature" By Tihomir Vučković, my former professor of American Studies. It's a representative volume of the best pieces from the first written ones to present day literature.
This is new for eg. "The Prince of Fire: An Anthology of Contemporary Serbian Short Stories" Radmila J. Gorup, Nadežda Obradović, eds. Pittsburgh, Pa. University of Pittsburgh Press.
      And of course: http://www.govorimosrpski.com/subcat_literature_novels.htm
Serbica, the Bookshop is a very good source, if you're anywhere near Toronto:
      http://www.serbica.com/e-knjizevnost.html

Movies are quite famous too in the European milieu at least, so you should be able to find some, always looking in the film festivals lists. Outside festivals it's not likely you'll come across one, as this would be the only purpose to have the film translated. I'm not a fan of Serbian films, I must admit. It may be the only kind of art that I think Serbs are not gifted for. Some older films (Makavejev, Nikolić, for eg.) are better and more artistic than the new ones. But that's just my opinion, don't let that deter you:):) :)

  7. QUESTION:
What are some good Serbian movies?
I am looking to watch some good Serbian movies. I would be very grateful if you could name some. Thanks in advance : )

      Lepota poroka
      Lajanje na zvezde
      Mi nismo andjeli 1.
      Tito i ja
I would also add Čitulja za Eskobara and Profesoinalac (this I advise to people who know or think to know about life in '90s in Serbia)

When you watch them all I will add more

  8. QUESTION:
What movies are based on the Yugoslavian Wars during the 1990s?
I'm very interested in what had happened during that time. It was almost like a second holocaust and i'm astounded that it's only been covered in 2 documentaries (Death of yugoslavia by BBC, and Yugoslavia:The avoidable war) and practically no movies. I know about No Man's Land (so far my favourite hehe) and Behind Enemy Lines but that one was crap.

    • ANSWER:
      -Vukovar(Brilliant film focusing on the seige of a Croatian/Serbian border town & its effect on a once multi-ethnic town. Filmed during the war!);
      -Pretty Village, Pretty Flame(Gripping drama of a tense standoff between Serbs and Muslims. From a Serbian point of view);
      -Welcome to Sarajevo(Based on actual events, this film is powerful, although at times a bit "hollywood.);
      -While America Watched - The Bosnia Tragedy(A look back at the unfolding of events as they happened on ABC News);
-Shot Through the Heart(An HBO film about the TRUE STORY of two snipers in Sarajevo (one Muslim, one Serb) who were best friends until the war turned them against each other).

Some are abouth the war betwene Serbia and Bosnia and Some betwene Serbia and Croatia.

  9. QUESTION:
Can you recommend any Croatian, Serbian or Bosnian movie that deals with the wars in ex-Yugoslavia?
I'm interested in watching any movie, made in the countries concerned, about the wars of the 1990s in ex-Yugoslavia. I am not interested in whether or not they are biased or partial or whether they support one ethnic group or national position.

Movies from other countries such as the USA, France, UK, Germany also considered.

    Any recommendations? Thank you :-)

    • ANSWER:
Im not really in mood of remembering hem and thinking about the war,but I can always recommend "The tour" or in serbian "Turneja".
Anyway, you can just look for better rated movies from exYU countries, dont bother watching films from other countries because they dont know a thing about that war,and they can never understand it (welcome to the Balkan, the place where logic is being persecuted).

    Would you refuse or accept?

    And why?

    • ANSWER:
I'm not positive but I think the title of the movie is Savior (1998) starring Dennis Quaid as a mercenary. I saw this one. Robert Orr's screenplay is based on the true story of an American mercenary in Bosnia.
      Here's the plot:
Former U.S. military official Joshua (Dennis Quaid) entered the Foreign Legion after his wife was killed in Paris by Muslim fundamentalists. Six years later, in Bosnia during 1993, Joshua and his pal Peter (Stellan Skarsgard), fight together on the Serbian side. After Peter dies from a grenade tossed by a young girl, Joshua shoots another youth on the side of the enemy. In a prisoner exchange, psycho Serb Goran (Sergej Trifunovic), a Muslim-hater, and Joshua wind up with pregnant Vera (Natasa Ninkovic), victim of a Muslim rape. When Goran threatens to shoot her baby, Joshua kills Goran. After Vera rejects the child, her family turns against her, and Joshua drives mother and child to a refugee center. 14. QUESTION:
Can anyone recommend a good movie about a writer and their struggles?
I'm looking for a good movie about writing, or a writer and their struggles; something along the lines of Sylvia (about Sylvia Plath). It can be fiction or non fiction. It can also be broadened to just include something cerebral or academic (like Educating Rita), if all else fails. I would be great if the writer and/or the theme I am inquiring about were the central story and not a side plot. I'm also looking for something along the lines of a drama, something serious rather than something light or humorous. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I would suggest A Serbian Film. It is especially enlightening in the context of Serbian history's traumas, such as four centuries of Ottoman rule and the recent Yugoslav wars.

Im 15 and I still am not allowed to watch rated r movies with sex or nudity. How can i convince my parents I'm old enough?? Its so annoying.

    • ANSWER:
Your folks are trying to protect you. I know you don't like it but they are in charge till you become 18. They pay all your bills, have a nice home for you,buy you food and clothes and generally are trying to do a good job as parents. They sound GREAT. Be happy you have parents who care so much about you.
The day you turn 18 you can watch 'Irreversible','Salo,120 Days of Sodom','Bad Boy Bubby" and 'A Serbian Film' . You'll cry for hours afterwards - then crawl to your parents on your hands and knees and thank them for not wanting you to grow up too fast. Remember once you have seen something....you can never UNSEE it. Trust me.

  18. QUESTION:
Where can i download the movie human centipede 2 the full sequence?
Bbfc @rse bandits have banned it. To say this pi*ses me off is an understatement. It can't be worse than a Serbian film and thats on the shelf of every blockbuster. WHY !

    • ANSWER:
The BBFC just recently screened it for rating purposes. As far as I know, their "ban" will really only affect its theatrical release in the UK, not DVD. Even if they hadn't banned it, it still wouldn't be available to the public for a while. You'll be able to download it after it's released on DVD or a screener of the film leaks.

Looking for title of older black and white movie?
I am looking for a black/white movie i saw about 35 years ago. It was about a woman whose husband really loved her, but never had the peace or believed that he really did. He did everything to convince her, but she never believed it. At the end of the movie, she is still so unhappy that she commits suicide by stepping in front of a moving train.

    • ANSWER:
      Anna Karenina (1935)
starring Greta Garbo, Fredric March, Freddie Bartholomew, Maureen O'Sullivan, May Robson, Basil Rathbone, Reginald Owen
      IMDb review:
Garbo is Anna Karenina, married to a stuffy husband (Rathbone) and devoted to her young son (Bartholemew). Everything in her rather orthodox life goes askew when she meets the Army officer Count Vronsky (March) and they fall in love. She makes a public spectacle of her adoration of the sexy, dashing Vronsky, and when her affair becomes obvious to her husband, it imperils his honor, his career, and the future of their son, so he throws her out to wander the world. Vronsky is in hot water, too. Warned to cut out the adultery business, he resigns and joins Garbo in Venice for a lengthy and thoroughly disrespectable honeymoon. Anna doesn't mind leaving her husband, but the guilt over her willing separation from her son gnaws at her. She begins to snap at her lover. She accuses him of wanting to get back into the Guards and fight in the Turkish-Serbian War, which in fact he DOES want, but not if it means leaving her. In the end, sufficiently provoked, he joins his friends in the regiment and takes off for the war, intending to return. This leaves Anna alone in Petersberg. She broods, becomes depressed, and throws herself under a train.

Another b&w version is this, which also is shown regularly and is very popular, perhaps because of the presence of Vivien Leigh (best-known as Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind"):
      Anna Karenina (1948)
starring Vivien Leigh, Ralph Richardson, Kieron Moore, Sally Ann Howes, Niall MacGinnis, Michael Gough, Martita Hunt

There are a number of versions of Leo Tolstoy's novel, including an earlier Silent version titled "Love" and starring Greta Garbo. Others are:
Anna Karenina (2000 TV miniseries) ~ starring Helen McCrory
Anna Karenina (1997) ~ starring Sophie Marceau
Anna Karenina (1985 TV movie) ~ starring Jacqueline Bisset
Anna Karenina (1977 TV miniseries) ~ starring Nicola Pagett

Depending on the age of the film, it would have to be either the Garbo or the Leigh version.

Asian horror movie "Flower of Flesh and Blood" (1985) from the Guinea Pig series is quite gory. In 1991, Charlie Sheen saw this movie and reported it to the MPAA/FBI because he thought it was an illegal snuff film. Other Asian gorefests: Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991), Ichi the Killer (2001), The Machine Girl (2008), Yakuza Weapon (2011).

The Evil Dead series is gory, and the first was originally rated NC-17 for featuring a scene where a woman is raped by a tree. (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, Army of Darkness -- WATCH THEM). Dead Alive (1992) is really gory too. Re-Animator (1985) is another good one. All of those are classics of the American horror genre. The Wizard of Gore (1970) was one of the gory flicks they watch in the movie Juno.

I don't scare easy, and i mean it. The last time a movie truly terrified me i was 5 and i decided to watch stephen king's "It" and the only reason that movie scared me is because i was 5.

    • ANSWER:
The thing is, as a rational human being you already know that what you see in movies is not real and therefore harmless. So it doesn't scare you. I'm the same way. I don't know that I've ever been scared by a film even as a little kid. I still love horror movies though. So...

      13 Ghosts
      Exorcism of Emily Rose
      Evil Dead 2
      Insidious

So those 4 all have lots of stuff jumping out of nowhere at you with loud spikes in the music/sound effects. Jump scares they're called.

      For really disturbing stuff try...

      A Serbian Film
      Antichrist
      Dear Zachary
      Salo: 120 Days in Sodom
      Cannibal Holocaust
Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS

One of my favorites is a film called "Begotten." It makes Eraserhead look like Ernest Goes to Camp. It is easily the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. But it's disturbing in a different way. Completely non-narrative. The images on the screen depict very little activity you can even recognize. There are no characters or plots. There is no dialogue or narration. But the scenes suggest such pain and agony and hopeless doom; it has stayed in my mind like no other movie.

      What else...?

I really like the older style of horror movies. When they were slow, brooding films with a palpable atmosphere of dread. Stuff like...

Tombs of the Blind Dead and it's 3 sequels.
All the Hammer Films movies, particularly anything with Peter Cushing and to a lesser extent Christopher Lee.
      House of the Devil
The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism
      Blood on Satan's Claws

But I doubt any of those will F you up for life.

Maybe you should watch Night and Fog about the Nazi death camps.

  41. QUESTION:
Have you watched the movie A Serbian Film? if so what did you think about it?
I'm considering to watch it, but i've seen a lot bad reviews and stuff so i don't know anymore.. Is it too sick and scary?
And if you've seen the movie, what's the scariest/sickest scene in your opinion?

    • ANSWER:
It's not scary. Just another attempt to be gory and controversial.

Most messed up scenes were probably when someone apparently like rapes a newborn baby, and when he beats the crap out of some chick after she bites him during oral, and he ejaculates in her wounds. The ending is kinda brutal, too.

Don't watch it if you want a scary film. It's more of a "oh, how brutal can it get" thing. Some things are deleted in different versions of the DVDs. I mean. It's far worse than the Human Centipede. It's made like a series of snuff films, in a way.

It's definitely up there though in the sick factor. Worse than Cannibal Holocaust IMO.

  42. QUESTION:
What was the conflict/war between the Bosnians and Serbians?
I was wondering what the civil war was about between the Serbians and Bosnians in Bosnia (or it might have been Serbia). They made a movie about it (Behind Enemy Lines I think). I just get a little confused on who was in charge and who wasn't. I was wondering if anybody could give me a breif discription of the conflict (war, etc) and the names of the guys who were charged and put in jail for war crimes?

    • ANSWER:
Yugoslavia was a nation that was kind of "thrown together' that encompassed different groups-Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims, Kosovar Albanians and Slovenes. When Tito was in charge (it was a Communist nation) there was a type of peace. Tito also mixed up ethnicites in different locations to create a sort of "melting pot". When Tito died there really was no clear cut leader of Yugoslavia. The constitution created a type of system where for like a few years the President of Serbia would be in charge and then the President of Bosnia would be in charge etc etc. In the late 80's and early 90's Croatia and Slovenia wanted to secede from Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosevic was president at this time (from Serbia) and was more interested in retaining power and keeping the nation in tact. He actually let Slovenia go with little intervention. There were some skirmish's in Slovenia but there was a negligiable Serb population there so they announced their independence. However, Croatia had a large Serb minority (the statistic I have is roughly 12%) and leader Franjo Tudjman who himself was power hungry and nationalistic, declared Croatia's independence which was recognized by Germany and later the US (in which I was very opposed to since I knew that it was a tinderbox over there but as usual the powers that be never listen to the people who really know anything) and the war between Croatia and Serbia began. But in the middle of all of this is Bosnia-Herzegovina which has three different groups-Croats, Serbs and Bosnian Muslims. It was the most diverse part of Yugoslavia and Milosevic did not want to let it go. The leader of that country was Alija Izetbegovic. One must remember that Bosnian Muslims are actually Slavs (Croat or Serb) who were converted during Ottoman rule. Anyway, the Croats and Bosnian muslims created a sort of "alliance" (I use the term loosely) and the Serbs were on the other side. There was a lot of fighting, mass murders of innocent civilians, sniper attacks on whole cities (such as Sarajevo the capital) the genocide of places like Bihac and of course the concentration camps. There were many war criminals on all sides but the most came from either the Serb or Croat side. The Serbs had people like Milosevic,Dusan Tadic, Milan Babic,Predag Banovic,Ranko Cesic,Damir Dosan,Drazan Erdemovic (technically a Croat but fought for Serb forces and part of the Srebrenica massacre),Stanislav Galic,Goran Jelisic (personally killed roughly 13 civilians in Brcko),Miodrag Jokic (Seige of Dubrovnik during Croatia's war for independence),Dragan Kolundzija,Milojica Kos (Omarska camp),Radomir Kovac,Momcilo Krajisnik,Milorad Krnojelac,Radislav Krstic,Dragoljub Kunarac,Miroslav Kvocka,Milan Martic (President and defense minister of Croatian Serbs during Croatia's war for independence),Mile Mrksic,Dragan Nikolic,Biljana Plavic (Former President of Republika Srpska)Dragoljub Pricac, Mladko Radic (omarska camp),Dusko Sikirica,Blagoje Simic,Milan Simic,Veselin Sljivancanin (Vukovar),Milomar Stakic (life imprisonment for his role with Prijedor nearby concentration camps),Miroslav Tadic,Stevan Todorovic,Mitar Vasiljevic,Zoran Vukovic,Simo Zaric and Zoran Zigic. Of course there are two big ones that are still being sought Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzjic.
On the Croat side-Zlatko Aleksovski,Tihomir Blaskic, Miroslav Bralo,Mario Cerkez,Stjepan Grandic (Gospic massacre), Drago Josipovic,Dario Kordic,Vinko Martinovic,Zdravo Mucic, Mladen Naletilic,Mirko Norac (Croatian Army General and commander of forces during the Gospic massacre), Tihomir Oreskovic,Ivica Rajic,Vladimir Santic. There are many more criminals wanted on both sides. The list that I have provided is not exhaustive. Sad to say that there are so many more who are still out there. As far as Bosnian Muslims convicted for war crimes there is Hazim Delic (Celebici prison camp), Esad Landzo (Celebici prison camp). It was a horrible war that still scars that area of the world today. Hopefully the war criminals at large will be caught and brought to justice one day. Hope this helped! If you are really interested in this topic I would to and pick up a few books on this subject. There are some good ones out there, such as The War in Yugolsavia by Misha Glenny which is an easy read. Also I would just look through all of the different books on the shelf and see if any more strike your fancy.

And explain which movies the most disturbing and why please! I've heard a lot about these and i was just curious, i don't think i'd want to watch them.
    August Underground
    A Serbian Film
The 120 Days of Sodom, or Salo
    Melancholie Der Engel
    Men Behind the Sun
    Human Centipede

    Thank you very much again!

    • ANSWER:
According to IMDB Melancholie Der Engel is the most disgusting movie ever made. There are men and woman shitting everywhere, vomiting, eating shit, having sex with dead animals, masterbating to snuff films, and just about everything other nasty, gross thing you could possibly think of.

A Serbian Film. It got 10/10 in every category. Violence, Drugs, Profanity,Intense Scenes, Nudity and Sex. The director might face prison for child pornography(in the film).

Human Centipede. Name says it all. A mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble them into a new "pet"-- a human centipede, created by stitching their mouths to each others' rectums. Disgusting.

August Underground. It is taglined the sickest film ever made. It was also said to be one of the most realistic snuff films.

Salo. The movie is known to be one of the most controversial films ever made. The entire film is evolves around teenagers having sex, being raped and being forced to eat feces as a torture during the war. Most of this is very graphic and very unpleasant. the majority of the teenagers that are killed are killed in various methods including scalping, the cutting out of eyes and tongues and various other methods.

Men Behind The Sun. Several horribly disgusting scenes throughout.

Watch one if you want. Just remember, you can't unwatch a movie!

  45. QUESTION:
How to put subtitles into movies?
And I want to put Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian language subtitles. Somebody please explain in details.

    • ANSWER:
Well there is 2 ways to put subtitles.

      1) hardcode subtitles. This you basically just use a video editor to place text on the video. Well the con is the subs cant be turned off, as they are part of the video.

      2) Using subtitle files, and changing the video to a container that supports them, like .mkv
You can use a program like Aegisub to create subtitles for something, and its pretty easy.
Then just use any programs that allow you to export a video file, and seperate/multi audio tracks, and separate/multi subtitle files as a .mkv (there are lots)

  49. QUESTION:
How to put subtitles in movies?
And I want to put Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian language subtitles. Somebody please explain in details.

    • ANSWER:
Well subtitles can be downloaded from external sites such as: http://www.opensubtitles.org/en

The file will have an .srt extension. What you will need to do is to bring both the movie file and the subtitle file into the same folder, and most importantly make sure both files have EXACTLY the same names.

Once you open the movie file, subtitles should appear automatically. (With Windows Media Player).
