  6. QUESTION:
Video cameras that take really good hd video and sound?
For short films, Youtube vlogs, etc. What should I be looking for?
    Preferably not extremely expensive.

    • ANSWER:
Start with a budget. Video capture devices (digital still point and shoot cameras) and camcorders start at around and can get to ,000. We don't know what you mean by "really good hd video and sound"... Consumer camcorders top out at around ,500. If your budget is in the 0 range, then the Canon HF R series is worth a look. The mic jack allows an external mic and it has rudimentary manual audio control.

      Please consider:
A tripod or other steadying device (don't capture when handheld). Use of a chair, rock, shelf, the ground or any other steady surface is acceptable, too.
An optional high capacity rechargeable battery from the manufacturer.
A video light (or some tripod-mounted worklights from the hardware store).

Assuming you want to edit the video, you may need some sort of computer upgrade - CPU, RAM, hard disc drive, video editor...

  10. QUESTION:

  12. QUESTION:
What would you like in a youtube mini-series?
I plan on making a mini-series and short films for youtube.

What sort of thing do people like (comedy, action, etc)?

What would you like in it (What sense of humour, what kind of characters)?

    What attracts attention?

    • ANSWER:
I think most people like a bit of comedy in everything. If you add that and it's good, what Genre you do won't matter as much.

I wouldn't do anything that appeals to a certain age directly. Kids might like "OMG SO RANDOM" stuff but adults won't as much. You want to keep viewers hooked. Also, hiding in some sort of dark back story or setting/fridge horror could be good. A show that did that successfully was 'Adventure Time'.

For characters, I suggest having the typical '5 Man Band' with some sort of enemy they have to defeat which could be the whole point of the series. Of course, it doesn't have to have 5 people but the concept is the same.

  13. QUESTION:

  15. QUESTION:
What constitutes copyright infringement on Youtube?
I want to upload my short film to Youtube. It's amateur and is not associated with anyone or anything. However, it contains a few video clips and sound clips from certain movies in a franchise as my characters have a movie marathon of these films. What kind of Mic is the best for filming?
I'm looking to start making short films on Youtube, I've already invested in a Camera, and lenses, right now I'm looking for a mic, but I'm not sure what kind to get? Are Lavalier Mics any good?
The camera I have is a Nikon D3200

    • ANSWER:
A Shotgun mic would be the best if you only had one mic, you can use this in most situations but if you only had a set of lav's it would be hard to record a dialogue scene with two people for example, especially if the are far apart. Up to you of course but for general film making i know the shotgun mic is my primary mic because its the most versatile

  17. QUESTION:
What are some tips for making a short film?
My whole life I always wanted to be a director. I always make videos with my friends and there not little crappy ones you see on YouTube, there pretty good. But anyways, I never no what to do with these short films, but now I'm in a film class in high school and we need to make a short film. I just need some tips for making an A+ material short film. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Apart from having to make a short film for a class, before you put in the effort to make a film, ask yourself what you hope to achieve with that particular project.

As an aspiring filmmaker, your body of work will be used as your calling card to attract financiers or an agent when you are ready to make larger projects on a professional level. So it is important that you take the time to make everything you do as excellent as it can be within the parameters you have to work within at any given time.

What this means for you right now is that you write a script that doesn't push the limits of what you are capable of achieving. For instance, you likely don't have the budget for a million warriors coming over the hills of Ireland, so you wouldn't bother writing a story that needs that. Instead, think about the resources you DO have available and then think of a story that is within your reach. What will likely happen is that because you don't have access to a lot of "production value" type elements, like amazing locations or special effects, you'll be forced to concentrate on CHARACTERS. And the key to all great movies is that the characters come across as real for the audience. In time, your access to resources will grow, so those extras will be there if you need them, but even the biggest movies with lots of fancy FX still need solid characters at the core.

It's one thing to write a great script with great characters, but you are making a movie from it. So, you'll need great Actors who can bring your words to life. Skip your friends and move on to the drama department in your school. Better yet, go to the Theater Department at the local University and audition Actors there. Look for a local Theater group that may have older talent who are all interested in doing more work. If your script is good enough and you can convince those people that you have the skills to make the movie look as professional as possible, then before you know it, you'll have a cast and crew who are all enthusiastic about making a movie...your movie.

Look below for some links to resources that will help you as you sit down to write and begin thinking about production of the film itself. If you have enough time, I urge you to also volunteer your time on other productions near you... University projects if possible, but if not, then look for local production companies. Offer to carry cases or get coffee and explain that you are interested in learning how actual professionals really shoot their projects. The experience will be invaluable as you take those lessons and apply them to your own work.

  18. QUESTION:
What constitutes copyright infringement on Youtube?
I want to upload my short film to Youtube. It's amateur and is not associated with anyone or anything. However, it contains a few video clips and sound clips from the Twilight movies as it shows various characters reacting to certain scenes from the films. Am I allowed to show scenes even if it's just a few seconds long? If not, am I at least allowed to play an audio clip of the scene while the character watches it?
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
To the extent that you're incorporating clips from a copyrighted Twilight movie, then you are certainly infringing on copyright. Just because the clip is only a few seconds doesn't change the fact that your film is infringing. That's a myth of copyright law and is flat out wrong.

Because Youtube allows others, like yourself, to upload such potentially infringing videos, Youtube can also be liable. In order to avoid liability, Youtube will remove a video if a copyright owner makes a claim that the video is infringing.

n short, if the copyright owner of the Twilight content sees your clip and tells Youtube to remove it, then Youtube most likely will remove it. If the copyright owner of the Twilight content does not see your video or just doesn't care to make a request to have the video removed, then your video will likely stay on Youtube. It's usually as simple as that.

  19. QUESTION:

How can i advertise my youtube account?
In September im going to start making Vlogs and Short films on my youtube channel but i need some ideas on how to get popular. I want to take this seriously so im getting a proper camcorder for Christmas. But with past experiences i have never been able to get popular. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
One of the problems Youtube face these days is that ever since they were taken over by Google, all this stuff that used to get people known easily has been lost, like featured videos on the homepage etc. etc. Many reasons.

But be unique in your style of creativity, like editing, camera use and be yourself. Make lots of friends on Youtube, and maybe collaborate with eachother. If you're seen on someones video who has more subscribers than you, chances are some of their subs will 'rub off on you'. I would avoid sending people personal messages on Youtube saying "come watch my video" because everyone gets lots of that, and its pretty much always regarded as spam and shows a bit of desperation.

You could do some stuff outside Youtube aswell, like put your Youtube channel on your forum signatures. Or use it as your website on profiles such as Deviantart or Facebook or whatever else you use.

  24. QUESTION:
How could i get my short films viewed?
So ive made a few short films and im going to put them on youtube but i want someone like a acting agent or someone to few them but how?

    • ANSWER:
You could put them on your acting reel. But only do that if they include some of your best acting and are a good quality production. (http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/professional-tips/what-should-be-on-every-actors-demo-reel/ ) You can also post it on places like iFilm then include a link to it on your actor's webpage.

It won't be the case where an agent sees a short film and thinks "Hey, I want that actor." Agents are too busy to be going around checking out short films on YouTube or other places (even viral videos). And if you send them a DVD or e-mail them a video file, it'll just get tossed in the trash. The idea that someone can do a couple of projects and get "discovered" is extremely rare.

But once you build your resume up enough and make contacts in the industry and can get the attention of an agent - you can them direct the agent to your demo reel or to your actor webpage or to the website where it's posted so that they can see you in action. Or if you're submitting directly to a casting director (for another film - probably a short/independent/student film) you could give them a link to your other short films so they can also see you in action.

  28. QUESTION:
What filming equipment would I need to make a short film?
I would like to make some short films and need to buy equipment for them. However, I'm not sure what I'm going to need. The films will be fairly simple but need to look professional - Please help!!

Is there any special lighting equipment and sound equipment that I might need? Also any editing equipment I might need?

    • ANSWER:
      Dear Music Dude,

The best and only advice you can rely on is this: do your research, watch short films online from reputable locations (YouTube Screening Room, Sundance Film Festival, Funny or Die.com, etc.), check out short film programs at local film festivals and see if you find a Director of Photography's work that you admire and believe is capable of making your film look like you want it to.

Then start searching locally for a Director of Photography (DP) in your area who *has their own equipment* that could match the look you love.

When making a short you want to have the best DP who owns the highest quality equipment and is in full agreement with the kind of film you have in mind.

With a solid script, great casting, a professional editor and a clear vision of what you want - you cannot fail.

  29. QUESTION:
What type of Camera would be good to record amateur movies, music videos, etc.?
Basically what kind of device (camera, slr, camcorder etc) one thats up to date with HD and all that good stuff. Short films for school/youtube and good sound as well. Forums online get too crazy and I know alot has to do with preference but I would just like some suggestions on the types of devices I should be looking for.

    • ANSWER:
HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of 00 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

  33. QUESTION:
what type of shotgun mic should i get for my camcorder?
im trying to find a mic for like short films for youtube. it needs to be around . ive been looking at the audio technica 6550 and the audio technica 55, but im not sure what the difference is between those mics... so any suggestions? i will go up on the price if needed. and the camcorder i have is a canon vixia hf m300.

    • ANSWER:
You really want to look more at the rode video mic or the sennheiser mke400 (or used mke300d if you can find one)

I'm generally against camera top mics in any case, they still pick up handling and motor noise (even shotgun mics with a hyper cardiod pattern have a small lobe of pick up right behind the mic) and advocate micing off camera close to the source.

The rode ntg-2 with an XLR cable, stand and breakout box such as a beachtek DXA-2 is really the best way to go.

Even the best mic on camera is still going to pick up any sound occuring between your subject and your camera and beyond your subject.

As one sound guy I work with put it: Buy the best mic you can afford and put it as close to your source as possible. There you are, qualified as a sound guy. It holds true.

  34. QUESTION:
How do I make a good short film?
I want to start making short films on youtube but I'm not sure how. I have a video camera and an editing thingy. However the only person I can get to "act"/film/edit would be me and me alone -_- Any idea how I could do this? Also any ideas to START a flim would be nice and greatly apreciated :)
btw: I use Movie Maker and have no idea how to use a blue/green screen

    • ANSWER:
lol I know how you feel i want to make one also. Well i think you should start out with an idea or message you want to get across to a viewer. Make a script from that idea and remember their doesn't have to be talking in it (personally i think the most impacting ones are were an actor is able to send a message with no words) And depending on what kind of effects you want to do you might need the use of After effects or Nuke so basically a digital compositor. also you might need the use of a green or blue screen. if you need some help with some compositing or editing e-mail me at jordon.a.g@hotmail.ca also a tripod might be of some help even if you take 2 still shots on it they can be connected depending on the shot and make it look like someone is ccontrollingthe camera.

      hope this helps

Edit You don't really need to know how to use a green or blue screen it is used in certain situations to place an actor in an enviroment that you don't have accses to and depending on the visual effects you want something like a green screen can be important. think of a movie as a picture and say you have several pictures and there is a picture of you and a friend background and maybe a buch of differant picsd of other things and you want to cut out your picture and place it on the background picture in any place you want. so your basically keying (cutting) out everything and changing anything you want. but in a computer its a bit more difficult since depending on the footage you shot there might be 29.97 frames or pictures per second and to go through them all and cut out the thing you want can take a long time (so think of it this way if you have a piture of you taken in rapid succsetion you would havve to cut out all thoes pitures of you and every picture will be differant) a green or blue screen is a much faster way to do all that work. Since Green and blue arn't natural colors of a skin tone the color can be selected and erased out without erasing a part of you unless you wear one of thoes colors. The program i use is adobe after effects and there is a plugin called kelight that i use and it makes everything a lot easier trust me.

But i wouldn't focus on this stuff until you know what you want your short to be about and what you want it to look like. Movie maker can't do any thing complicated so if you want somesthing simple it could work but personally i love after effects i will use it no matter what since i find it easier to use but it does take some time to get used to it. But like i said before e-mail me if you have any questions and just as a note if you are going to contact me its all lower case and its periods between my name then the "a and g" and my name Jordon is spelt with an O at the end other wise i might not get your e-mail.
hope this helps it might seem a bit discouraging but its not that bad.

  36. QUESTION:
Want to get in to HD Video editing , Where should i start ?
I want to start a new hobby learning and getting in to HD Video editing , Making short films for Youtube HD and Editing sound , Where would be the best place to start apart from looking on forums and reading ?

I will be using a Pc to do most of my work on using Vista 64bit , What are the best programs i can use that will give me everything i need ?

    • ANSWER:
Personally, I would recommend looking for a P/T class you can take at a local film school. You would get way better support in the learning department there. Plus you would get access to a variety of gear to test out before making any financial commitments.

If you are going to venture out on your own, then I recommend either Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas for the PC. They are probably the better consume grade options out there. They aren't super cheap, but are attainable. I think Vegas is in around 0 and Premiere Pro is likely around the same on its own for about 00 you can get the whole video production bundle from Adobe (which will add DVD authoring and web development options too).

Adobe Premiere Pro has a better community out there. So I would kind of lean to that over Vegas myself if you can afford it. Vegas has a user base for sure, but not as big and strong as Adobe's. Plus the new Adobe software bundles give you a lot of bang for your buck. And lately they've really been on top of the ball with new releases for new codecs and the like.

Also, you need to be able to get the HD footage in the first place, so you need to figure out how its going to get to you. If its going to be coming in on tapes, then you'll need a deck to digitize the footage (minimum expect to pay about ,500 for a cheap HD deck if its like HDV, if its a more professional format, the price goes way up).

But if the files are being delivered to you digitally (in any manner), then just LOTS of hard drive space. And honestly, to work well with HD, I would want to possibly invest in a striped RAID setup, or at least an eSATA external drive (like what Seagate and Western Digital sell all over the place).

As for books, go to Amazon and look for a book with decent reviews for your software. I would start there. If you want to expand and get into editing theory (so how to do it better, not just learn the software) look for "In the Blink of an Eye" by Walter Murch.

  38. QUESTION:
Is it possible for me to make a YouTube web series and some short films using only Adobe After Effects?
Is it possible for me to make a YouTube web series and some short films using only Adobe After Effects for editing software adding special fx and what not?

    • ANSWER:
It's possible, but you'll find it to be much easier to use an NLE (non-linear editor) like Premiere Pro to do the cutting/assembing of clips. After Effects is best for manipulating images, but Premiere Pro is best for assembling these clips in time.

  42. QUESTION:
How do I get my short films seen?
I have made several short films in the UK. I have used real crews and done everything professionally but I don't have that much knowledge about film festivals or how to contact industry workers to show them.
    Any help would be great!

    • ANSWER:
Almost all film festivals (except the really big ones like Sundance etc) use a clearing house called Without A Box. You go to www.withoutabox.com and register for free; you can see all the festivals that are currently taking submissions and enter online. You pay the entry fees for whatever festivals you enter and then supply the festival with the content (usually on DVD) for screening.

Check the rules for the festivals you enter before you upload to YouTube etc - many have rules which would make your film ineligible for competition if it has been widely available on the web.

      Good luck!

  43. QUESTION:
Is it illegal to take a short story and make it a short film?
Can you take a short story and make a film out of it, and only put it on Youtube.?

I am not looking to make money off of someone's work without permission, I just like having fun making movies (movies that last maybe 5 minutes). And there are some stories I have read that I would have fun making into short films. I would not be making money off of it, just posting it on Youtube.

    Is that illegal?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi there.
It is illegal, if the story is in copyright (less than 75 years old).
You can use older stories. If you REALLY want a modern story, change the names and a couple of details to make the story your own, you will be fine.
      Good luck, Steve.

What does it take to become a Director?
I'm 13 and in the future i really want to become a director, but i have some questions like these: How many years of school does it take? Are there certain classes i have to take in High School and College to become a director? And finally, I want to start make short films for youtube as a start. What are some programs i can use for editing, and what not? I have a Macbook OS X. Thank you for your time!

    • ANSWER:
Films you practice as soon as anyone will accept them or your parents support your application.
As a young person you are being the camera person as well as director, prop guy, janitor, etc.
Eventually you will have to learn to read scripts and communicate about them in detail (or how to work improvisationally with actors who don't think exactly as you do.) and talk to producers and the other crafts people who make up the team of making a major movie.
It certainly helps if you go through a film program in college to make contacts, practice in a less risky environment, learn from others, and try your hand. If your high school has any kind of drama, film, video, or photography, I would encourage you to take that. Actors come from various training programs and you will eventually have to learn about them, but you should also have some acting or stage managing experience under your belt.

  50. QUESTION:
How could I use a bike to film someone running in my short film?
For my A Level art coursework, I am filming a short film. With a bog-standard 12MP HD video camera, at one point I'll be shooting someone running in a field. How can I achieve a smooth, effective shot? Bare in mind the ground isnt smooth, if you see what I mean?!?! Any tips at all would be welcomed, this is my first attempt at a short film!

    • ANSWER:
A bike is a horrible idea! You can't expect yourself to be very still holding the camera while maneuvering the bike!

Smooth freehand shots are usually taken with a steadicam - they can be rented from video equipment store. However, they can get expensive.

watch the video above. They offer some improvisations that can be used in replacement of the commercial steadicam.
