Streaming Movies On Netflix 2012

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to stream HD movies on Amazon/Netflix without a compatible TV?
I am baffled that you have to have a compatible TV to stream HD on Amazon or Netflix. I have a full blown brand new 1080p TV but it is not a "compatible" TV to stream HD movies from these sites apparently. How can this be? Is there a workaround to this?

    • ANSWER:
The issue is certain manufacturer's do not support 1080p from Netflix. Most major brands now support 1080p. LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony and Philips all support it on the 2012 and later smart models. If you do not have one of these brands the only workaround would be getting a device like the Roku XD or XS.

  2. QUESTION:
How long does it take a movie just released to reach netflix?
Does Netflix stream recently released movies? For example if avengers is to be released in cinema's on the 19th of july 2012 how soon will netflix have it available to stream?
    Thanks in advance

    • ANSWER:
In general, major motion pictures do not become available to stream for up to 10 years because of first run rights that the premium channels have. Netflix has made a number of agreements to help with this problem. The most significant of these is the deal with EPIX. This arrangement grants Netflix access to titles from Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount 90 days after they arrive at EPIX. This translates to about 8-10 months after the movie is released in theaters. The Avengers is distributed by Paramount. I would not expect Netflix to have it before January of next year. They have also made deals for first run rights with DreamWorks, The Weinstein Company and FilmDistrict. Best Picture winner "The Artist" will be on Netflix immediately after its disc exclusivity period ends.

  3. QUESTION:
Why are movies taken off of Netflix sometimes?
I recently watched the 2009 movie 2012 on Netflix (about 2 weeks ago). Personally, despite reviews, I think it was a good movie, but that's beside the point. Today I was on Netflix and noticed that it wasn't available to watch instantly as it was two weeks ago! This has happened with other movies too. Why is this?

    • ANSWER:
      contact expiration

the programs on watch instant have to be licensed by their distributor. when the contact expires, the program gets taken off. They can only stream a title for as long as the contact is.

Netflix is a rental and streaming company, Not Columbia Pictures. Disney, Viacom, Paramount pictures, 20th century fox and all these other film and tv companies

The simpsons, that 70s show, edward Scissorhands - these are all owned by 20th century fox.

If Netflix were to stream any of these, they need a license from Fox. and when and if they get a license, they can only stream for the length of the license

the same would apply to any film by any company - Netflix doesn't own the films they stream and rent out so they can only stream it for how long the license is

  4. QUESTION:
On an iPad how can I stream Netflix movies and videos outside the US?
As you guys know, you need to be in the US to access Netflix. So is there something I can use or install in my iPad to bypass those IP restrictions? I urgently require a fix that works on the iPad.

    • ANSWER:
Use an iPad-compatible VPN like HidePad:

      http://ipadsecurityissues.blogspot.com/2012/01/ipad-vpn-for-video-sites-best-ipad-vpn.html

I have been using it for the past 1 year to stream Netflix and other US-based streaming video sites in Australia.

A VPN lets you securely unblock websites outside the US and can be used on your iPad. It's a popular option in several countries around the world including China, UAE, Switzerland, even the UK and Canada. It is also more secure than a proxy because it protects your IP address and supports anonymous browsing.

  5. QUESTION:
What are the best scary suspense movies on Netflix streaming?
Please share some of the best scary suspense movies that you've seen on Netflix?

I'd appreciate your input - it's so hard trying to find good ones, there's so many to choose from!!

  6. QUESTION:
How often does netflix and lovefilm update their films?
Lets say a film came out on the 20th of January 2013, when would it be able to be streamed on both:
    A)Netflix
    B)LoveFilm
Also which one is better in your opinion and give reasons if you want. Ya know, you don't have to but it would be much appreciated!
    Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
This cannot be answered as it is different case by case.

Some film studios refuse to offer their films for streaming at all.
Some films refuse to offer their films to be streamed on Netflix some refuse to allow LoveFilm to stream their movies. Some studios don't allow either platforms to stream their content and only allow other platforms such as iTunes, Amazon Instant Watch or their own content provider such as HBO.

So to find out when a new film will make its way to Netflix or Lovefilm one would have to know what studio owns the film and if they have a deal with either provider.

But for instance take a small film like "Jeff Who Lives at Home" it was released 16 March 2012 and showed up for streaming in Jan. 2013 so that is roughly 10 months. "One For the Money" was released Jan 2012 and showed up Jan. 2013 so that is roughly 12 months. A really small film "Sleepwalk With Me" was released August 2012 and again Jan. 2013 it was being streamed so roughly 8 months.

So you might say a year for bigger studio films and 8 months to 10 for smaller indie films.

As to which is better? I cannot say with any true degree of accuracy (due to the fact that Lovefilm is not available in the US) but here is an article comparing the 2. It is from November of 2012 so it should be up to date.

  9. QUESTION:
Is the cabin in the woods on Netflix through the mail?
I might be getting the netflix by mail. I already have streaming for Netflix and wanted to know some of the newer movies on Netflix by mail

    • ANSWER:
No, Cabin in the Woods will not be released on DVD until September 18, 2012.

  10. QUESTION:
What TV show should I stream via Netflix right now?
I have watched Lost, Prison Break, Breaking Bad and 24. 24 is by far my favorite. Can you recommend anything like 24? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are both absolutely amazing shows. (Korra is the sequel to Avatar.) They are the best shows to exist on the planet but they sadly don't get much advertisement so not everyone knows about the show. People who DO give the show a chance and watch it LOVE it. Never judge a show by its network, at least not in this case because that would be a huge mistake.

Just read the reviews on Netflix or iTunes. The only bad reviews are about iTunes not putting episodes of Korra up soon enough. Doesn't matter age, gender, it is a show like no other and is really one of the only shows that can be thoroughly loved by anyone.

      Here's the Netflix page:
      http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Avatar_The_Last_Airbender/70142405?locale=en-US

Here are a couple fan-made trailers to Avatar: The Last Airbender. They kind of give an idea of what the show is about:

NOTE: Avatar is on Netflix, but Korra might not be yet because it is still new. It will be on DVD soon if you decide you like it.

  12. QUESTION:
Why was Lord of the Rings removed from Netflix Instant Play?
I watched Lord of the Rings a few weeks ago on my computer on Netflix but now it's removed... Does anybody know why?

    • ANSWER:
It's probably because the contract for streaming was up and the company that owns Lord of the Rings decided not to renew it's contract. Netflix doesn't own the movies it provides, they license them for broadcasting. So periodically, movies will come and go from Netflix streaming which can become annoying. For example I watched Home Alone 2 exactly a year ago and now it's only available in DVD.

And for a heads up, it looks like Stars is ending it's contract with Netflix in late Feb 2012! So all those movies being provided by Stars (Stars Play) may not be available after that depending if Stars decides to renew it's contract. I would suggest watching what you want from Stars Play in the next 2 months!

  13. QUESTION:
When does the movie Pitch Perfect come on Netflix?
I want to see pitch perfect soooo bad! Does anyone know when it comes to Netflix?

    • ANSWER:
This is a bit complicated but generally for what are considered top earners or popular films it is 9 months to 1 year after the theatrical release date. "Perfect Pitch" was released in September of 2012 so the earliest would be next May. But these numbers are not written in stone it also depends on how well the DVD sells and how well the DVD is rented.

To start with Universal which owns "Perfect Pitch" release the DVD.

Then they require that Netflix wait one month before offering the DVD to be rented. This would be at the end of Jan 2013.

Then they require that Netflix only offer renting for 4 to 6 months before they are allowed to offer it for streaming. It is that 4 to 6 months where things get tricky. If the industry shows a massive slow down in DVD sales and DVD rentals then Netflix will be allowed to offer it for streaming sooner but most likely that won't happen. So an educated guess is May of 2013 for streaming.

  14. QUESTION:
What's up with Netfilix splitting up and losing customers?
I was just about to join them but i hear customers are fleeing and they're splitting up.

Is this a bad time to join?

    • ANSWER:
The CEO is afraid of missing shifts in technology, which is fine, but many think he's gone way too far the other way.

Netflix is splitting into two. Netflix will remain as the name of the streaming-only service. The DVD service will be split off under the name Kwikster.

While the future may really be in streaming, here's the problems right now:

1: The majority of Americans don't have a broadband connection capable of supporting a streamed TV show, let alone, a movie in HD. In fact, a good portion of Americans don't even have broadband at all.

2: Netflix's streaming library is fairly small compared to their DVD library, and fairly unpredictable. They're in constant battles over rights for shows and movies. Most notably is their deal with Starz, which will expire in February of 2012. Unless this is renewed, which is looking very shaky right now, fans of Netflix's streaming service will lose access to several big studios' titles - including Disney.

3: As a streaming-only service, Netflix was a tough sell when compared to things like Hulu (free on PCs), Hulu Plus (/mo), HBO-To-Go, and even up and coming services from Comcast/Xfinity, DirecTV, and DishNetwork.

4: As a DVD-only service, Kwikster faces tough competition from Redbox, whose /disc/night price is awfully tough to beat.

The old combined Netflix service made sense. It kept the old DVD customers around while the streaming library came up to speed. At some point, yes, this split makes sense, but honestly, this isn't the time - especially in light of the recent 60% price hike in the middle of a recession.

Furthermore, the CEO's attitude about physical media in general is way off target. DVD is going to be around at least another decade, and while I doubt blu-ray will ever overtake DVD, I don't see it going away any time either.

It remains to be seen how this 2-sites, 1-company thing is going to work. Right now it sounds like customers who want both Netflix(streaming) and Kwikster(DVDs) will now see 2 separate charges on their credit cards, and will need to manage 2 separate accounts...and 2 separate queues? So does that mean if I wanted to stream a show from Netflix, only to find out it's not available, I'll have to hop over to Kwikster and add it to my queue over there? Talk about inconvenient.

At the same time, there was mention that Kwikster would be (FINALLY!) adding video games to its library. No information about pricing or what sorts of games are going to be available has been released yet. Honestly, the best move for Kwikster would be to just outright buy Gamefly.

Realistically this isn't the time to join. There's way too much shakiness right now, and at least for the meantime, there are equally good, if not better, alternatives for DVD-only or Streaming-only services. I'd wait 6 months for this split to occur and for them to shake out the inevitable bugs that are going to arise when they try to split their customer database. Trust me, you don't need the extra headaches.

  16. QUESTION:
Netflix moving all movies to instant stream?
One of my friends told me that Netflix is beginning the process of moving all of their movies (instant and ones that you have to wait for in the mail) to be instantly played on the internet. Please let me know if this is true!

    • ANSWER:
I read about this a few days ago... can't remember where...

  17. QUESTION:
I am no longer getting X High definition on Netflix, what's wrong?
I'm using my ps3 to stream movies with download speeds of about 6mb per second and my tv has a 1080p display. Of course I'm using an HDMI and still only gets to high.

    • ANSWER:
Netflix is utilizing new encoding technology from eyeIO. The new technology requires less bandwidth. The new highest streaming rate is in 1080P but it only takes as much bandwidth as the "high" setting. Some folks think the new encodes look "soft". Netflix may add higher quality encodes in the future. More details at http://www.techofthehub.com/2012/12/netflix-missing-xhigh-mystery.html

  18. QUESTION:
how often does netflix remove shows and movies?
i just got netflix and i am wondering how often they add movies and shows, and also remove them from the list. by the way i watch netflix on the wii hope it helps i need a direct answer no links please for sometimes they dont help much.

    • ANSWER:
For streaming it depends on when the licensing for the title expires from their service. Titles get added & removed a few times a week. However, the titles they add aren't always new movies, just newly added to Netflix streaming.

For rentals: titles are added at least once a week
      (usually twice a week).

Sorry for these links, but they backup the info above:

  20. QUESTION:
Does anyone know if there will be any new anime coming to netflix streaming in 2012?

    • ANSWER:
They are adding things all the time on Netflix, so probably--especially since it seems like a lot of the big Hollywood companies are not allowing their movies to be available for streaming, so Netflix seems to be turning to material in other countries to add to the size of the library. Which makes me happy, since I really like Korean dramas.

  21. QUESTION:
What console should I get in 2012?
Should I get 360 or Ps3 or even handhelds like 3DS or Vita? Or maybe save up money for a good custom computer since I know how to assemble it. Oh and I don't want a Wii

Please do state your reason based on present and future games that will be released of your answered console. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      You should get the 3DS.

Because you can play music (even with the system close).

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you're the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And you can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

      http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

And the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to .99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

So you can pay 9 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Petz Fantasy 3D and Cooking Mama 4 and Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3D and Nintendogs + cats and Zoo Resort and Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Monster Hunter 4 and Golden Sun 4 and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.

And the 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV.

And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game.

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free.

And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix.

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for 9 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses.

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 to 2 weeks of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop.

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week.

And you can now pay to download 3D & 2D Videos on the 3DS.

And the 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content.

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nin…

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser's 3D ability:

      http://www.3ds-screenshot.com/

      http://gamecrunch.co/3dscreens/

      http://3dspaint.com/

      http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3d…

      http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And the 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps.

  22. QUESTION:
Are all the spiderman movies on Neflix?
Are all the spiderman movies in Netflix? Including the new one called the amazing spiderman? And is the avengers movie on Netflix? Please be descriptive and detailed to be chosen as best answer

    • ANSWER:
Yes, all of those films are available through Netflix; however, they are all unfortunately only available through DVD rental, and none of them are available to watch/stream instantly. The only Spiderman shows/movies that are available to watch instantly are the animated series from 1967 (3 seasons), 1981 (1 season), 1981 (Spiderman and His Amazing Friends, 3 seasons), 1994-1997 (5 seasons), 1999 (13 eps.), 2003 (1 season), and 2012 (1 season), all of which are animated.

  25. QUESTION:
Why don't my movies show up in my instant queue?
How come whenever I come to an option of adding my movies to my instant queue AND I PUT THEM IN MY INSTANT QUEUE they are never in my queue? Same with movies that I just put in a couple days ago

    • ANSWER:
Are you talking about Netflix ?
When you choose movies for your queue you are asked to click on them to add to your queue. If you are talking about live streaming MANY MANY MANY titles are not available. If there is anything newer than 2 years old it won't show up for instant viewing...but it will show up for DVDs mailed to your house. Mailed DVDs are much newer releases than the old movies on streaming. Always check to see if the movie you added is available on one service or the other. You are probably trying to add movies that aren't available on streaming but are available (tho they may not even be released yet) for DVDS. For instance you can get HUNGER GAMES in your DVD queue-even tho it isn't released for 5 months on March 12 2012. That movie will not show up in live streaming for about 3 years.

  26. QUESTION:
Should I buy my sister the kindle fire as a Christmas gift or graduation gift in May 2012 for my sister?

    • ANSWER:
Hi, Virgo27, X-mas is sooner but I'd only recommend Kindle Fire to my enemies. Fire was pretty popular because of all the hype that Amazon created in the press before anyone could see or touch the device. A lot of people pre-ordered it and now if you look at Amazon's own web site reviews of the device there's a lot of disappointed folks (more than 900 already) out there that left 1-2 start reviews. Nook Tablet - according to pro reviews on the web - is a class above Kindle Fire in terms of hardware and performance. Per reviews out there, Nook has a much better screen and a much better/smoother performance while playing movies than choppy Kindle Fire's act. It has double the RAM and is much zippier than Fire in both booting times and loading apps. It has microSD slot (not on Kindle) for more content space (and you can have more than one card) and rooting without voiding the warranty. Also, Nook Tablet has physical volume controls on the side (not on Kindle) and built-in microphone (not on Kindle) for Skype. Nook Tablet has to offer the same things that Kindle has and more - It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photos/movies. Amazon Prime is worthless - 13,000 movies and 10,000 books are included while Netflix has millions of movies and B&N ebook store has more content than Amazon's with 2.5 million paid books and 2 million free public domain ones. Also it's worth mentioning that if you walk in with any Nook to Barnes & Noble store, you'll get tech support and you’re allowed to read ANY available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi.
Check out a sample pro side by side review below:
      ENGADGET
Both devices rock 1GHz dual-core processors, but the Nook has an edge here, with its 1GB of RAM to the Fire's 512MB -- and certainly the difference is noticeable, even when booting up something as simple as a game like Angry Birds. Things are even more pronounced during video playback. We took Shutter Island for a spin via Netflix streaming on both devices, and it was really like night and day. Motion is far less choppy on the Barnes & Noble device. The HD playback on the Nook also picked up subtle imagery like patterns on ties, which were largely lost on the Fire

  27. QUESTION:
Which iPad VPN unblocks Netflix movies in Russia?

    • ANSWER:
I'm using HidePad VPN for iPad to unblock Netflix movies in Moscow. Here's how it works:

      https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-gCcNyPzYmcaVM1ZXNQUi04aW8

As you know, streaming Netflix movies requires a US IP address or a US mailing address. But when you try to access it from Russia with a Russian IP address, you won't go through. That's where a VPN comes into play by giving you a US IP address to unblock and access Netflix in Russia. It also gives you enough bandwidth that is required to watch those movies online.

By the way, an iPad VPN works in all parts of Russia. Apart from unblocking websites, it is also a good way to secure your Apple device on public wi-fi connections. That's because it supports encryption and anonymous browsing.

  31. QUESTION:
do you think this stock is a good investment?
Blockbuster. its currently trading around 8 cents per share. they went bankrupt not too long ago. blockbuster was bought out of bankruptcy by Dish Network in April for 0 million.

Netflix announced last week that its deal with Liberty Starz fell through. This means that Starz content, which include streaming videos from Walt Disney and up until recently, Sony, will no longer be made available starting in February 2012. Netflix raised prices by 60%, and they don't include new releases, games and Blu-ray, and in-store exchanges.

Wible says that Blockbuster's downfall was the debt issues it inherited from Viacom. "But they now have an investor that wants to execute and reinvent the company, which previous management wasn't able to do."

its reported that around october, blockbuster will come out with a capability to stream movies, games, blu ray, including new releases.

    what do you think? thanks

    • ANSWER:
This is an example of why these penny stocks are so dangerous. The story is not what you think it is.

As you say, Blockbuster was bought out of bankruptcy by Dish Network for 0M. The deal included "substantially all" of Blockbuster's assets. Dish network wants to reinvent the company and I hope they do it - competition for NetFlix is good because I love movies. What about Blockbuster stock, BLOAQ.PK? It wasn't cancelled in the bankruptcy and Dish network bought "substantially all" of the assets and worked out deals with the debtors. Dish certainly owns all the stores and kiosks as well as the online presence and all the distribution rights of Blockbuster.

So what do you own if you own BLOAQ.PK? Probably nothing. There are lots of penny stocks that trade in which you own nothing and all you own with BLOAQ is "all" - "substantially all" which is "who knows?".

Now if you want to invest in the future of Blockbuster, you buy DISH. Alas, DISH is not a penny stock and closed today at 24.06.

Edit: Onky thinks he is pretty smart, but he doesn't have this right. The bankruptcy never cancelled the existing stock. Also, there are companies who go through Chapter 11 and emerge with their stock intact.

  32. QUESTION:
Do you think Comcast should get rid of the residential data cap?
In today's day and age, there are countless ways to very easily reach your 250gb monthly data cap on Comcast. Simply streaming a HD movie on Netflix can be about 6gb. Pandora/Youtube/facebook/email/online gaming....all those things add up very quickly and causes us to monitor our usage so that we don't get cut off. We now are in 2012. Shouldn't comcast be investing money in better technology instead of "rethinking" the whole thing and increasing our bandwidth by 50gb? We believe that the cap should be completely removed or raised to at least 700gb monthly.
If you agree with the above statement please sign our petition we just created. Once we reach the designated signature limit we will send this petition to comcast and hopefully they will reconsider getting rid of the cap. thank you.
    http://www.change.org/petitions/comcast-get-rid-of-the-250gb-data-cap-limit-on-residential-internet-service
Yes that might be 180GB just for movies on Netflix. Many of us have households where more than 1 person uses internet for school/work....

    • ANSWER:
      How about don't get Comcast?

I have AT&T U-verse and there is no cap

And if you stream a Netflix HD movie to get 6GB, multiplied by 30 days, that's still only 180GB.

That's 70GB left to do whatever the heck you want.

  36. QUESTION:
does anyone know when 3d movies will come 2 the 3ds?
    just wondering

    • ANSWER:
The 3D shown in the 3DS is the same as in the Movie Theaters.

They just put the Right Side Image on the Left Side & Vice-Versa, so the 3D goes the other direction.

And Netflix CEO has said that Netflix is getting 3D Movies this Year for Streaming Online (Statement from January 25 2012).

And Hulu Plus is coming very soon and I heard that Hulu already has 3D Trailers and stuff like that.

And Hulu also has plans to bring full 3D Movies to Streaming Online on Hulu Plus.

And Nintendo had already sign a deal the Warner Bros. & Dreamworks & Disney back in 2010 to bring full 3D Movies to the 3DS.

  37. QUESTION:
Scariest Netflix Instant Streaming Horror Movies (June 2012)?
Okay. My friend and I are trying to find good scary movies that are CURRENTLY on Netflix. We've gone through tons of other lists online, and half of the movies aren't even on Netflix anymore, if they ever were in the first place. So we're hoping to find a list of SCARY movies.

Now. We're tired of the stupid movies that aren't even scary. We're looking for jump scares and/or something that is truly terrifying. Blood and gore? Not the scary we're looking for (Ex- Saw Movie. Not our kind of scary). Sick and twisted and weird? Not the scary we're looking for. Strange? Still no. We want where the thing on the screen makes us want to look away and fear that it will be hiding in every dark corner. Where we'll be afraid to put the dog out in the middle of the night, afraid it'll be waiting for us there. We're also NOT interested in movies pre-1990. And even then, anything before 2000 tends to not be too scary. So, sorry, we just aren't. So please try to refrain from suggesting these. Things like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc, just aren't scary, nor what we're looking for. We'd also like to stay away from anything with subtitles, as it tends to take away from the actual horror. But if need be, we're fine with watching foreign ones.

To give a bit of insight on movies that scared us, here's the following movies, and what about them that frightened us :
The Ring - Scary Little Girl. Enough said.
The Grudge - Her large eyes, accompanied by her strange noise and contorted movement. The jump scares in this movie ("this movie" includes 1-3, and Ju-On 2)
Grave Encounters - We found this to be an absolutely amazing movie in its ability to scare us. While some parts could have been better, we absolutely loved numerous jump scenes that caused us to literally scream. We adored the scary faces of the things that attacked the screen, and overall, found it to be great.

We have also seen a good number of "horror" movies already. Just off the head, here are some :
    Haunting in Connecticut
    Session 9
    The Crazies
    Quarantine
    Insidious
    Paranormal Activity 1-2
    The Omen
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
    Grave Encounters
    The Grudge
    The Ring
And more, but ... yeah. xD

    Thanks again!

  39. QUESTION:
Macbook Air 2012 or Macbok pro 2011?
I am going to buy a laptop soon (upgrade from a 2004 iBook), and I am not sure whether to get the 2012 Macbook Air or the 2011 Macbook Pro. I really like the thinness and the portability of the Air, but I'm not sure if the Pro would be better. I would be using the computer for:

    A. Internet Surfing
    B. Streaming videos from netflix
    C. StarCraft II and StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
    D. School Projects with Office for Mac (I'm a senior in High School this year)
    E. iTunes (I have an iPod touch)
-Movies, music and apps for iPod

If somebody could please lay out the differences and describe the hardware differences (I have no idea what the heck the difference between a 2.5 GHZ and a 2.0 GHZ processor, etc.) I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, as a side note I will not be using it for video or photo editing, although I will be using it for photo storage and viewing. My bigger concern is how well I can watch movies on it and how well it will run StarCraft II. Thank you.

    -DominSpectre
I also forgot to mention that I do not mind the lack of an optical drive on the Air. If I get it I will be getting the SuperDrive. Not a big deal since everything is digital now anything, and you can find legal ripping programs. Thanks.
Thank you for that Greg, but I have seen people playing it on a 2010 macbook air, so I know that it can run StarCraft II. I would, however, like to know what the 2012 version can do with StarCraft II by way of settings. I know that the 2010 macbook air could run it on medium graphics settings no sweat, so what can the 2012 Air do?

It won't be much more than playable on the Air. It'll run much better on the MBP. Aside from that, it's whether you value portability over specs.

  40. QUESTION:
    What happened to movie rentals?
About a year ago, blockbusters closed down.Since then, I have to buy movies every time I want to see one. I do not like paying money to buy unless I enjoy the movie, I have no idea of knowing if I will enjoy the film when I buy it, that is why I rent it, so very little money is lost. My film viewing has decreased since they closed (I recently got Netflix, which has quite a few movies, but a lot of movies that I want, they don't have). I just went to a Rogers Rental shop, It has quite a small collection. What on earth happened to the industry? Do people not watch movies anymore? Did Netflix do this?
    @James

That sucks. Why do people not support the industry?
Did blockbusters just close in Canada? or everywhere?

    • ANSWER:
Netflix and Redbox are the key culprits in Blockbuster stores closing down (it hasn't officially gone under yet, but it's closing down the majority of its stores in the U.S. and Canada); both offer cheap alternatives, Netflix has a better selection (if you count both DVDs and streaming), and Redbox is more convenient (since it's found in many supermarkets and other locations where people go anyway, saving them an extra trip to the rental store). So it's largely a matter of the consumer and the industry moving on to a different way of doing business, and Blockbuster's model simply wasn't sustainable anymore.

And of course, the movie industry isn't entirely unhappy about this--they'd rather sell their movies than have them rent them out; in fact, many have been successful in enforcing delays between sales and rental (that is, a movie goes on sale on DVD/Blu-ray first, and can't be rented or streamed out until weeks later).

Piracy is a factor, but to say that piracy was a *major* factor in this would be inaccurate; research shows that most people who pirate actually spend more money buying movies (the ones that they really want), than those who don't pirate. http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2012/02/03/you-will-never-kill-piracy-and-piracy-will-never-kill-you/

  41. QUESTION:
Some good movies to watch on Netflix streaming?
I am looking for good movies (PG13 and under) to watch on Netflix. Action, Comedy, Thriller, SciFi, anything really! =) I liked movies like... The Eagle, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, The Other Guys, Captain America: The First Avenger, Apollo 18, etc. So if you know any like that I would appreciate it!
You can also mention some good TV shows like... Criminal Minds, Hawaii Five-0, CSIs, NCISs, Three Rivers, A Gifted Man, etc.

All of them preferably on Netflix streaming.

    Thanks for any answers! =)

  42. QUESTION:
Hulu plus or Netflix on PS3?
Which one should I get? Some first-hand experiences would be great.
Also, I should mention that I don't have cable TV.
Netflix on ps3 only offers old movies then? I won't be able to rent new releases?
Ive gone the TVersity route. Streaming is choppy, and you have to pay for the "pro" version to get Hulu.

    • ANSWER:
I would go with Netflix. For 9 or 10 bucks a month you get unlimited acess to their streaming movies (which is mostly older TV shows and movies, but they do get new releases in there too, like District 9, 2012, Old Dogs etc... shortly after they hit DVD. With that you also get unlimited movie rentals they mail to your house for newer (or older) movies that aren't available for streaming. You can have one out at a time with that payment plan, but the turn around time is really quick.

  43. QUESTION:
Netflix or lovefilm in the UK?
i live in the UK and currently a member on LoveFilm. But i have heard that Netflix are lunching in the UK in early 2012. So what is everyone's opinion's should i move over to Netflix or keep LoveFILM.

some questions Americans could answer about Netflix (UK people might even know):
Does Netflix allow you to rent games?
Does Netflix allow you to rent the actual dvd disc?
What is the selection for online stemming like, for example are they new films and how long after release intill you can stream them?
Will there be an application on the ps3 and sony blu ray players like there is for LoveFIlm?
If there will be an app on sony blu ray players does it stream in 5.1 surround sound.

would be great if you could answer as many as you can. Many Thanks people

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Jamie:

I'm in Canada and love Netflix. You really can't beat the price for .00 (5 pounds?) a month. I love documentaries so the service has been great that way. However, I do find the selection rather lacking and this includes new releases. I think this may only be the case in Canada.

I stream from my iMac to my iPad. I also stream to my television using Boxee. The quality is good and the stream is smooth and doesn't start and stop. I've had the odd time where a movie just kept stalling. Netflix some how knows this and will give you a credit for a free movie.

We can't rent games or the dvd disk.

  44. QUESTION:
Best movie out now for kids to watch?
Age range: my group is around 3-4th grade (age 6-9) but other groups in the camp (K-8) might join us
Occasion: Last day of camp + party (so i want to make sure they have the most fun before they leave)
Examples: so far this year, we've watched Ponyo and Space Jam, but i've been seeing some "oldies" in other answers like water horse, kung fu panda (2?), g-force, happily never after, zorro, how to train a dragon, spirited away (scatch that), howl's moving castle,... (actually, these are just movies that I haven't yet but wanted someday watch. my movie knowledge is kinda low lately...). i would prefer anything modern that has already been released so that we could just get it at costco or netflix or something. I've also seen Alvin&Chipmunks, madagascar, finding nemo, + cars suggested often, but those are so main stream that most of everyone already watched them -_- (i already did)

Main Point: What movies should I suggest that my campers could watch on their last day (July 27, 2012)?
since other groups r likely to watch movies, too, suggestions for other ages r welcome, 2, but not as urgent for me. i prefer not to suggest movies too old that the kids would not understand them very well and/or would easily get bored of it.

googled "netflix lost" i got a netflix link to Season 1 , 2 3 4 5 , Tryed them all and it said "page not found" i wuz liek "umg did they delete it??"

    • ANSWER:
Netflix does have the show Lost to watch instantly.

I think it depends on your internet. It runs pretty smoothly on my computer and xbox. The only time it will go slow is when a lot of people are using the internet.

The divide is currently not available to stream.

You need to make a netflix account to watch the shows.

  46. QUESTION:
How to unblock blocked or censored websites in Kuwait and Middle East on my iPad (any model)?
I'm an expat living in Kuwait and have noticed during my short stay here that several useful sites related to my profession, including other entertainment sites for movies, are blocked or censored for some inexplicable reason. They seemed to be partially blocked when I was living in Abu Dhabi and Dubai (UAE) as well. Is this a permanent block or is there any way I can unblock them or bypass the restrictions? I'm using an iPad but also require a solution that works on my Windows PC and laptop.

    • ANSWER:
You will need to use a VPN app for iPad (virtual private network) to be able to unblock those websites on your Apple device. I've lived in the Middle East for 11 years and in Kuwait for 4 years. This is the VPN I use, and it works not just on your iPad or iPhone but also on your Windows/Linux laptop and even your Android smartphone. In fact, the nature of VPN is that it is device independent. It can be configured on any device in any part of the world:

      http://hidepad.annics.com

Remember that Internet censorship in the Middle East (specially places like Saudi Arabia, Oman or Bahrain) exist for religious, political or cultural reasons. While Dubai and Abu Dhabi are generally more liberal, certain restrictions do exist there as well. It's really a case-by-case basis when it comes to blocking sites.

See "VPN and Internet Security for Apple iPad in Dubai, UAE and Kuwait":

      https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-gCcNyPzYmcUDJxejJYd1hlakU

Sometimes, the block can be geographical in nature. This is specially true if you're trying to watch Netflix or Hulu on your iPad in Kuwait or UAE. In this case, it's the sites themselves that track your IP address -- called Geo-IP tracking -- and deny permission to stream because you're based outside the US, UK or the selected number of countries where these movie sites can be streamed.

A VPN is useful here as well since it gives your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch or other device a US/UK IP address. Here's how it works:

  47. QUESTION:
Nintendo Wii or Nintendo 3ds for late comer?
Which of these would you recommend. Nintendo wii has tons of great titles, Nintendo 3ds is a new release. Nintendo has a new console on the horizon for 2012 (probably next christmas)..However there are so many great wii games now out for a better price. Nintendo 3ds looks nice but I'm not sure how mobile I will be..so it is more in terms of the content in gaming.
I also realize that Nintendo won't be focused on releasing as many great games as their focus is on their next gen console..However this gen has much to offer and is still a quality pick up for anyone given the huge library of games it has created over these past years.
I ALSO understand that the NEXT XBOX and PS3 DONT come out TILL 2013-2015 So there is still plenty of content to add in this generation.

So you can pay 9 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Petz Fantasy 3D and Cooking Mama 4 and Nintendogs + cats and Zoo Resort and Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Monster Hunter 4 and Golden Sun 4 and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.

Also, the screen is perfectly fine, in terms of resolution. Anyway, it’s the pixel density that matters, not the actual number of pixels. The 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV of, for example, 32 inches. It’s perfectly fine. Not everything has to be 1080p you know. Since 1080p at 32 inches is worse than just 240p on the 3DS.

So you can pay 9 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Monster Hunter 4 and Golden Sun 4 and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.
