Streaming Movies Online Amazon

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is the best product to stream video to a TV wirelessly?
I am looking at options to stream video from a few sources to my television. I would like to do the following:

Stream a movie on my computer hard drive to my TV via my receiver
Rent Movies online (like Amazon....etc) and stream them to my TV via my receiver

I need to use my receiver for sound coupled with the fact that I have a single HDMI input going form my receiver to my TV. Wireless preferred

    • ANSWER:
Wireless streams right now will not produce very good picture due to the transfer rate. Right now I stream content to my tv via my xbox 360. It works really well as i can download 720P content and steam to 360 which upconverts to 1080i.

i know it's not the answer you were looking for but a 360 or PS3 are probably your best bet...

  2. QUESTION:
How do I stream movies using WIFI from my computer to my TV?
I have a desktop computer which I currently use to watch movies online. While my monitor is high quality, I really want to watch on my larger TV. My TV is not DLNA or WIFI compatible. I was wondering if there is a box that one could hook up to the TV which could receive these signals. What category would these items be under when I am looking online? I haven't been able to find anything other than a brand new TV. And I would like to watch movies already on my hard drive as well.

    • ANSWER:
Apple TV is a good product for that. .

A company called Roku also makes one (they make more than one to fit your needs):
      http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_electronics?_encoding=UTF8&node=172282&field-brandtextbin=Roku

You might also consider Boxee Box and Google TV. But I really think Apple TV is king (although I don't own any of them).

  3. QUESTION:
Does anyone know a good website for watching movies online?
Okay i know its harsh on the films/directors/actors but i wanna watch some films/movies online.

Ive looked through over peoples questions related to this but i cant seem to find one good website where i can watch some good films for free! theres gotta be one out their!

Just wanna stream live films like new ones and old! Good quality please thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Dont waste your time - free sites are rare and if the are, usually means trouble. Steer clear and buy the movie or stream form reliable sites like Amazon

  4. QUESTION:
What should I look for in a desktop computer?
I'm looking for a computer to stream videos, movies and surf online. I need it to be able to connect to the internet Wireless too. And if it could play blue ray movies that would be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.

    • ANSWER:
Well, you want to focus on the wireless or internet cards in the desktop, try and get a faster card using 802.11 G or N, i cannot stress the G or N anymore, these are the best.
You want to get a fast router so when looking for a computer, you may want to upgrade your router, to make sure you get the best speeds possible to ensure a smooth internet experience. Also try looking for the best internet provider in your area to get fast speeds, so you may be able to stream full HD films to your desktop!
As for the Blu-Ray, you can either look for a desktop with Bluray built in, or you could just buy an internal blu ray player for around 50 pounds. This would go underneath your original dvd writers etc on the front of your desktop tower.
And with the desktop, I reccomend buying a nippy desktop, to future proof for a while, so ensure you buy a desktop with multiple cores in its processor, so look for words like "Dual Core" or "X2, X4" etc.
Have a look at non high street brand desktops, as these will give more "bang for your buck" and will be hand built and made in quality. Try Mesh. You can get a cheap build which gives you money to buy a Bluray drive.
      http://www.meshcomputers.com/
take a look at their value desktops, for the 299 one you get a good set up with a 3.1GHz dual core (making it 6.2GHz) processor, also leaving room for a blu ray drive and a better wireless router.
For a router, i reccomend the "DrayTek Vigor 2110n" which is the best around under 100 pound at the moment, or if that is too expensive go for the "Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH" Just google them. The DrayTek is around 90 pound, and the Buffalo is 69.
as for the blu ray drive, you only pay alot if you want to WRITE blu rays, for a plain READER which means you have to use your dvd drives to write to dvd, but you cant use Blu Ray discs to write, you can get them cheap. Try amazon. Here is one for you:
      http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SH-B083L-Blu-Ray-Reader-Lightscribe/dp/B002RTC46A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281469927&sr=8-1
this one can also write dvds despite what i said above. and is only about 54 pounds! You just need the no how to install it internally, but this is easy, just yahoo answer it later, or google it.

      Hope I have helped

EDIT - Also you may need to upgrade your graphics card, but all you need for blu ray is a cheap ATI HD Radeon 5450 which isnt good enough for gaming, but your not doing that are you?
Altogether, this makes your set up, if you buy the 299 desktop i reccommended from mesh, and the other hardware, minimally around 400 pound, or if you go for the more expensive router, then 450, not bad I think eh?
Another Edit - You only need the faster routers etc of yours isnt that fast at the moment, otherwise dont bother.

  6. QUESTION:
Should i buy a ps3, or wait until the new playstation comes out?
I have an original Xbox running xbmc, since 2003 its been in my room streaming movies and what not, now its 2013,and I want a new game system. all I need is a game system to play games online, stream Netflix, and load movies on. I would go with a 360, but Microsoft live costs too much for me.

    • ANSWER:
Although the PS4 has been announced but I am not sure too much about would it be backward compatible and what would be the new advancements. Sony has shown a little about graphical models and it is good but nothing else is explained much clearly. So if i would have to choose I would never choose the most recent product and will first check out its performance and then spend money on it besides it is going to be very costly in the beginning. I would recommend better be safe then sorry and go with PS3.

  7. QUESTION:
What device should I get to connect to the internet - mobile?
I am looking to get a portable device to connect to the internet with. I will need two of them for different uses.
The first one is for my husband. He will need to be able to get on this device from different locations around town. He often needs to look up addresses online - so it would need to hold a connection while moving in a car. Something simple like google maps/earth is what he's use it for. Plus, to check email and general browsing.
The second is for our daughter. She's 6. I would just like to get her something to get online with to play games, go on starfall.com...simple stuff as well. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime, so something that could stream these movies would be nice.

Okay, I don't want to spend much money on these. Obviously for my daughter, because she is young and it has more potential of becoming damaged. And like I said, my husband will not be using his for anything fancy either. Another thing that is pretty obvious is that I, or...we, are not that up on technology. I don't want to get something that's so cheap it will break, or will too frustrating to use. Also, I don't want to waste a ton of more on cutting edge technology that we have no use for.

    What would you recommend?
Would I need it to have 3G technology to stay stay connected through multiple locations? Like if it is being used for navigation.

  8. QUESTION:
How does Amazon take back movie rentals after you download them to your device?
I want to rent a movie from Amazon and download it to my Kindle Fire - which you're allowed to do. However my question is this: how do they "take" the rental back after its downloaded? Online or through your tv they could just deactivate it after you watch it. But on a device, especially if I'm not streaming wifi - how does that work? Will my rental still "expire" or will I be able to watch it indefinitely?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know how they do it, but they do it.

I've rented some movies for my Kindle Fire, and then downloaded them to it because I would be watching on the plane.

After the rental period was over, they still showed up in my Video section, but when I clicked on it, it said the rental was expired and the movie was removed from the Fire.

  9. QUESTION:

  10. QUESTION:
What is the best online service for watching American television while overseas?
I'm moving overseas and want to be able to log on and watch cable TV, DVR shows etc, via the internet. I've seen a few online services that use a slingbox type setup where you pay a monthly fee and they set everything up stateside and give you a logon. Has anyone ever used one of these or have any experience with these?

    • ANSWER:
Don't pay. You can go to ovguide.com and type in any shows and it'll search and find. Also, Sidereel dot com is good 'cause they will even track your shows for you. Once the show is tracked you will see the "main links" (Amazon, ITunes) where you can bbuy the episodes or movies. But right under those links is a button that says "other links" or something similar.
Click that and then you can watch on megavideo or other streaming free links. Megavideo "times out" after 72min of watch time per day, but you can get around that by either working offline after it is streamed or resetting your router box. Megavideo will try to make you pay once the timer is up, but, again, unplug your modem and reset it. All done.
The sites are all streaming so you do not have to download, but there are other streaming sites like divxden that have all kinds of stuff but you just have to download their divx player. Your spyware will go "NOOO!" but it's really not a deal. Just adware, which you remove later.

      Good luck. Enjoy.

Can you watch movies on a Kindle Fire when you arent connected to internet?
Im thinking about buying a Kindle Fire. I know you have to be connected to interenet in order to download the movies. But once they are, do you have to remain connected to watch them? Example: I want to be able to let my daughter watch movies or tv shows in the back seat while Im driving.

    • ANSWER:
Hi Caitlin, be prepared that the video playback is not going to be great on Fire as it is one low-juice device and not a real media tablet. Nook Tablet is much better without a doubt, it's a class above Kindle Fire. You should do own research and read online reviews on Kindle Fire before ordering one - there's a lot of complains from people who got the device that many Kindle Fire units have faulty Wi-Fi and people have a lot of issues connecting to internet. Also, Amazon's own web site has hundreds (over 1200 so far) of reviews of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device.
Other reported issues are that Prime movies can't be downloaded, only streamed, making them impossible to watch without Wi-Fi on Kindle Fire. Also, on Fire when the Silk internet browser is pointed at the Android market, it reverts to the Amazon market with much more limited content. Touchscreen is being reported as having a sluggish response. Slower and jerkier than expected web browsing thus no benefit from Silk browser. Power button is badly placed, leading to accidental turning off of the device (a lot of complains about this one).
All pro reviewers on the web clearly voiced that Nook Tablet is a much better device with superior performance compared to Kindle Fire. Nook Tablet has been getting rave reviews and it is the best device in it's class. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best non-glare laminated screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photos/movies, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype (not on kindle), physical volume controls on the side (not on Kindle), very smooth video playback with excellent screen, and very fast apps load.
      Sample review:
      Laptop Mag
Whether it’s the bigger amount of RAM or just more mature software, the Nook Tablet feels a lot faster than the Fire. Where the Fire often seems sluggish and, on our tests, often failed to respond to our taps until we hit an icon two or three times, the Nook Tablet was always smooth and responsive.

I was looking at Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD 7 because of the price, any recommendation?

    • ANSWER:
These two are the best options you can find in this budget.
      http://www.amazon.com/review/R3A3H5EX8ZP34B/?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0083PWAPW&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&nodeID=&tag=afsuimw-20

      Similar specs:
      - Front facing HD camera
      - HD screen 1280*800
      - Cloud storage

Both are great. It depends on your preference.

Kindle Fire HD has pros like:
      - Dual wifi antenna which makes it good for faster downloads and streaming
      - HDMI out
      - Digital dolby audio

      Nexus 7 has pros like:
      - Quad core processor (Bit more power compared to 1.2Ghz dual core processor)
      - GPS (Only Kindle 4G LTE version has it)
      - Google play store (You can sideload apps on Kindle Fire from google play though sideloading )

My recommendation would be Kindle Fire HD as its more oriented towards movies/ videos watching by its dual wifi antenna it streams faster.

  17. QUESTION:
Best way to connect PC to TV to stream online video?
I want to connect my PC to my TV. The TV will be in a public place & will stream live music/video from the internet.

Is the best way to do this via WiFi?

    • ANSWER:
You would be using wifi for your PC.

Unfortunately, using wireless for video is very hit or miss. I have tried it before and running the microwave, portable phone, or many other devices caused poor reception. Not to mention that the quality was poor to begin with.

What I do is I have my computer in another room and I use a 15' HDMI cable that I got off Amazon for about to get sound and video to my tv. A good wireless keyboard/mouse lets me surf the web, play games, and watch movies/streaming content.

  23. QUESTION:
What kind of data can you save on a Blu-ray player?
I have no clue about blu-ray players, we are about to buy our first one. I read stuff online that sound Chinese to me. This is what I got so far: you can play blu-ray and normal dvds in it. Thats all I understand. What else can I do with my blu-ray player? I read something about storing data. THANKS! I know, I sound very dummy.

    • ANSWER:
If you want to store data on a Blu-ray disc, you need a Blu-ray burner. As far as what kind of data you can burn to a Blu-ray disc, you can burn anything to the disc. As far as what you can do with a Blu-ray player other than watch Blu-ray and DVD and listen to CD's, that depends on the Blu-ray disc player you get. Some of them connect to the internet and play streaming movies from Netflix and Amazon. Again it depends on the model of your Blu-ray disc player but the main thing you do with it is to watch movies.

NOTE: It also good to check the online mom and pop electronic stores to see what their prices are. The people of these store know how to break the region codes so that your player is a region free player. Well not just the good online mom and pop electronic stores. Even those mom and pop ones that are in your area

The young workers they know how to do it and which ones are easy and which are not. From what I know Sony is some what hard to do. They follow by the rules of the movie studios on region free. Even IF you find out how to do it for your Sony model online. Like IF it say you need which remote and how to do. You got to have that one, not even your expansive or some what cheap one will do.

  27. QUESTION:
Why do most people act like digital/download/streaming movies is the future, and disc will be obsolete?
    1. Why, because there free online, free movies can't replace paid for movies.
    2. Do downloads even have menus, special features, audio commentary, as far as I know only discs have that, and all Amazon Instant Video has is just play the movie.
    3. I think downloads even HD still don't match the quality of a Blu Ray
    4. Some people just want a physical copy

    • ANSWER:
Because it will become obsolete. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but likely within our lifetimes.

Yes currently Blu-Ray is the best quality and of you want 3D you need a physical disk. And you are correct that there are no special features on streaming movies.

But a lot of people don't care about the special features. And if they do, you can find most (if not all of them) on YouTube with a minimum of effort. Take Joss Whedon's "Serenity" for example. On the disk there is the blooper reel...the same blooper reel you an find on Google Videos and YouTube.

But as internet technology becomes more and more powerful (especially when you're talking about City-Wide WiFi setups) and the bandwidth becomes greater and faster, you can start encoding the whole disks at the full speeds and at the full HD format as a DVD or Blu-Ray.

It is the way of the future but it's just that. The future. We're seeing the birth of it right now. It's got the awkward growing up process to go through first but once its there...disks will be a thing of the past.

Books that you buy are yours. And other Kindles that you have registered on that account will be able to read any of the books that you have bought with that account.
The reason Amazon Prime is different is because it comes with a lending library. Books that you get from that will have to go back and then you can't read them any more. The same is true of when you use your local library's online library. (That's how I get all my ebooks for free.) Amazon Prime does cost about but gets you the lending library, deals on ebooks, and all the free movie streaming to your device that you want.

  30. QUESTION:
What are your comments on that trendnet wireless adapter for the xbox?
We were about to buy it and we didnt know if it is good for the xbox. People said its difficult.

    • ANSWER:
The only thing you can use that is wireless plugged into a USB port in the Xbox is the official Xbox wireless adapter.

I personally think there are 3 better ways to connect your xbox to the Internet to play Xbox live. There's powerline, MoCa, and HomePNA.

Let me give you some links explaining how this works and where you can buy each of these. Here's powerline:
      http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/en_US/images/abn/2009/com/pcon/netgear_pwrline/netgear_powerline.swf
      http://www.bestbuy.com/site/NETGEAR+-+Powerline+Ethernet+Adapter+Kit/8919708.p?id=1214004487426&skuId=8919708&st=powerline
This method is more expensive, but it can stream HD content. If you want to stream an HD movies to your Xbox, this is a much better way to do it than wireless. Or if you want just online gaming, the link above is fine: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/NETGEAR+-+Powerline+Ethernet+A/V+Kit/9700669.p?id=1218152460995&skuId=9700669&st=powerline&cp=1&lp=11

Now here's MoCa. MoCa is also great for streaming HD content. Think future. DVDs will be gone soon. The future will be HD streaming. Here are the links. The first one explains how it works.

Here is HomePNA. I have no videos to explain this, but it uses your phone jacks instead of your powerlines or coax lines.

  31. QUESTION:
What is a good book i can use to learn german?
I want to learn geerman, I only speak english and some spanish. I do not want to pay for rosetta stone or use the internet for german, so do u know of a good book that would help me learn german?
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
In order to learn the language successfully you really need to use a whole range of resources, so don't rule out the internet just yet. I can understand why you wouldn't want to use Rosetta Stone though, because it's really expensive.

Check out where the closest German Embassy is to you, and if there's one nearby, contact them about learning German (you'll be able to find them on the internet and contact them through their website). And as another answerer said, you'll also want to think about taking classes through the Goethe Institute. If you go to school or university you could also see if you are able to take it there, or you could try and find a German class near you. You can't realistically expect to learn the language for free, but since you're obviously looking to buy some stuff to help your learning, I suppose you know this.

I take German at University and we use a textbook called Kontakte: A Communicative Approach and the accompanying write-in book, but it's expensive and I really don't like it all that much. Buy yourself a good German-English dictionary, a grammar book (this will be really helpful and you won't regret it - they're normally not too expensive either), and then try and find a good book to use. If you have a look on Amazon (just type in "learn German" or something) then most of them will have reviews down the bottom, so if you find one that has good reviews, looks good and is in your price range, then you can purchase it through there. Also have a look at your local book stores so you can see if they have anything that would be helpful that you could actually look at physically to make an educated decision about.

Watch as many German movies and television shows as possible, and listen to as much German music and radio as you can as well. This http://www.global-itv.com/ has German television channels and this http://www.listenlive.eu/germany.html has live-streaming German radio stations. I really like the kids channel lolz. It's hilarious, and the speech is simple and easy to understand when you're a beginner.

Have a look at these websites anyway, can't hurt to try, can it? And you can use them to supplement your learning. It'll really help you on the pronunciation front.
      http://www.myhappyplanet.com/
      http://www.busuu.com/
      http://www.rocketlanguages.com/german/premium/german.php?hop=ahmad82pkn
      http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,,2547,00.html
      http://www.livemocha.com/
      http://www.mangolanguages.com/

This one is the one I use the most, because you download a program from the front page (free and small) and then you download lists from the website, selecting the lists you want going by what you want to learn first, and it will test you on those lists in the form of flash cards. It also says the word aloud for you, so you can repeat after it and then type in your answer. It does both English to German and German to English. I really like it.
      http://www.byki.com/

And this is a wonderful German dictionary (better than using some shitty, unreliable online translator) if you can't afford to buy a hard copy of one: http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/

Good luck with the language learning, sorry I wasn't able to recommend you any books as you asked but hopefully this'll help you a little anyway :)

  32. QUESTION:
Are you going to cancel your Netflix subscription?
I am canceling mine due to the outrageous increase of 60% (second within a year). It is estimated that 40 to 41% will cancel and change to HULU (free) or HULU Plus, Crackle (free) and Amazon (free with their Prime Service). Their streaming is no longer going to be combined with the mail DVDs.

Do you plan to cancel? If not, why not? Haven't we had enough gouging by corporations?

    • ANSWER:
I have already canceled my Netflix acct. I originally had the cheaper service where you just stream the videos, and it seemed that the never had any of the movies I actually wanted to see- and the ones that they did have online to stream were from Starz on demand and were older. I checked two months ago to see if they had any of the Harry Potter movies for my sisters, and all the movies had to be ordered on discs...

I have Direct Tv, and it was cheaper to order their movie package with HBO then keep Netflix with the price increase.

Why is it impossible to rent Jurassic Park 1?

  35. QUESTION:
How do you make a long distance relationship work?
my girlfriend of 6 months recently moved away. We promised to be faithful to each other. so i was wondering how do you make a relationship work if you hardly see each other?

    • ANSWER:
      Communication is the key.

Maximize what's available digitally for conversation! You need to keep in touch everyday. E-mails, chats, Skype, WEBCAM, texts. Check out a phone USB converter called Magicjack too.

Well since the above's already expected... here are some new stuff:
Maximize what the INTERNET has to offer:
** Play an MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing games) like WoW or Everquest 2, AOC, etc.. You may like it even if you're not the gamer-type. Cons is this may be addictive and require much of your time. But still, it's more than just talking, you'll get to "do" fun stuff "together" because the characters meet up in a common world of diverse possibilities and make mutual online friends. Watch the months burn.
** Watch enjoyable stuff together. Sites like hulu.com or even netflix, as well as countless other sites offer STREAMING episodes of series and movies which both of you could watch at the same time. It'll be like cuddling in front of the TV.
** If the distance is THAT huge, order from the local online stores to have surprise gifts delivered over to your lover's address (ebay or amazon, etc).
** Be ready to take and e-mail pics of the little things during the day which made you think of her.

Read great books together, if both of you like reading. (I'm not saying you have to sync yourselves page by page lol, just make sure one isn't too far ahead). You'll always have something to keep the conversation going.

Mail each other sweet snail mail. Stuff which you'd like to share with each other. May be scrap book style, or random stuff you'll know she'll like.

However, be sure to see each other in person AT LEAST once every year... it's a necessity.
Keep your daily online "appointments". Trust is the biggest issue here, and it's somewhat of a comfort to let the other know what you've been up to while you were out, and that she has an idea of what your schedule is like.

      Best of luck!!! =)

  36. QUESTION:
How to connect Xbox 360 to the Internet?
What do you need to hook the xbox up to the internet to download demos and stuff and how do you do it?

    • ANSWER:
If you have a router, simply connect the 360 to it, and then use the 360's menu system to create a Xbox Live account. You may be able to use your current gamertag, so long as no one else is currently using it on Live. (Gamertags are like user names - they must be unique.)

If your router is close enough, just use a standard ethernet cable. Get one from any computer store. They come in various lengths up to 100'. Longer cables are possible, but you'll have to make it yourself. If you use an ehternet cable, the router will automatically configure the 360's internet settings for you.

If you don't feel like having a cable running around from room to room in your apartment, and your router supports WiFi (most do) you can get the 360's wireless adapter but it's pretty expensive at . If you use a wireless adapter, you will need to tell it your wireless settings, like your SSID, WEP and/or WPA passphrase - these are the same as the ones on your router. Once connected, the router will configure the 360's internet settings automatically (IP, subnet, gateway, DNS)

If this is your first time creating a Live account, you will be given a 1 month trial subscription to Live Gold. This allows you to play games online, and stream movies using Netflix (using your existing Netflix account.) After the month is up, your account will go back to Silver. Silver still lets you go online to download demos, send messages, etc. but you can't play games online, nor use the Netflix feature. You can upgrade your Silver account to Gold at any time. Some games include trial memberships, or you can buy a pre-paid membership card from Amazon, Target, etc. Of course, you can always use a credit card to buy a subscription as well.

Demos are free, but full games, and some downloadable content for games (like the add-on for GTA) require you to use Microsoft Points. Again you can buy pre-paid cards or use a credit card to buy points. 400 points is . Most things cost 800 or 1200 points.

  37. QUESTION:
What kind of blu-ray player should I buy?
I'm looking into getting a new blu-ray player. My plans are to walk into best buy and look for one. I'm not really sure what my price range should be and I hear most blu-ray players are cheap now. I really just want to be able to stream netflix from it and watch movies in good quality. It'd help me if you could tell me what too look for when buying one and what brand would be the best buy.

    • ANSWER:
Make sure it has netflix, amazon, etc, connectivity. Only some have that capability.
And you probably want one with 3D capability.
Pick a name brand like Sony or similar.

One feature (important to me anyway) is how long it takes to start playing a Blu-ray movie. The sony model I have takes about 5 minutes, really bad.

Go online and look for reviews.

  38. QUESTION:
Where do you buy movies/tv shows for the new Kindle Fire? and how much would they be?
I am looking to get the new Kindle Fire for Christmas this year, and there are a few things i am uncertain about.

    • ANSWER:
You buy them from Amazon itself.

They have a yearly membership to something called Amazon Prime, which gets you thousands of free videos and movies that they add to all the time. They also rent streaming movies and such for reasonable prices. And yes, you can also buy online movies and videos if you wish.

That's what make the Kindle Fire so attractive. Because Amazon has set it up so you can get all the content easily from Amazon itself. It's tightly integrated.

  39. QUESTION:
Media boxes to put into a home theater system?
I am currently looking at the WD TV Hub, Roku, and Boxee Box. I need a device that both streams online content and media from my network hard drive. As of right now that hard drive is an apple time capsule 3tb. What do you recommend?
If you were to make them all the same price, though, as if money weren't the issue, what would your choice then be?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Of those listed (considering price and what they can do) I would go with the Roku.

While the WD TV Hub is nice, the price tag is not so nice. For that price you could have the Roku and every paid channel they have to Offer.

The Roku is nice as it will stream media very well and play movies via the usb port... The formats the usb supports are very limited. There is a lot of video conversion that needs to be done (trust me I have one). I use to go to sleep, use a free video converter to convert like 6 movies overnight to mkv format & have it auto shut off when done. Not a deal breaker but still some hassle. The problem with these is they will not do network tv websites (like MTV, FOX, CBS, Discovery and so on).

The boxee still has to many bugs so I would take it out of the running.

Before you make your choice, let me toss another option into the ring (that is often overlooked). It can do everything those listed can, but so much more. Not only can it stream Netfilx HD 7.1 surround, Amazon HD 7.1 surround, Crackle, Popcornflix, Youtube, and all the other things those mentioned can do. It can also stream the free version of Hulu (you do not need Hulu Plus), it will do MTV, ABC, NBC, FOX, and every other network that has a .com site. It will show pictures, slide shows (in any format), Play music in any format, Play movies in any format (no conversion required), we are just scratching the surface of what can it do. Not only can it do all this mentioned & the many things unmentioned, it can do it for 1/3 the price of the Roku and 1/5 the price of the WD TV.

Enter the HD video card (for under shipped to your front door). You pop it in, drop the CD in and install the drivers and you are done. It will automatically reroute the surround sound when the HDMI cable is detected. In under 3 mins you have everything the Roku and WD are plus so much more. You can connect your monitor to it and have 2 screens in a snap. It will automatically play any movie you have on your computer via the TV while you still have the monitor to use the computer.

My friend got a newer model card and asked if I wanted his HD 6550. I had an old computer (P4 cpu from 2004, with a real old bios) and said sure. I am actually answering this on a 24 inch screen while watching U571 in 1080 HD with surround on a plasma TV (sound & picture is amazing blu ray quality) from a file off the hard drive.

I got a 15 foot HDMI cable for and am good to go. http://www.bestlinknetware.com/Product/181268

Here is a sample card you can get for under http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131338

That card is 64bit with 1GB video Memory... the older card he gave me is only 32bit with 512 video memory and still mind blowing. For a little more you can get the better models and still be 1/2 the price of the Roku..... lol I hate I spent money on the Roku, but live and learn I guess.

*** Note: If you are looking to make a home theater system out of an old pc laying around like I did, get the PCIe 2.0 vsersion (a lot of the 2.1 will not work on old motherboards unless there is a bios update for it). The card he gave me was a ASUS 2.0 (but listed as a 2.1 model) and worked right away with a with a 2004 bios. If your computer can support 2.0 or higher then any will work.

  40. QUESTION:
What is the best reader between the kindle touch 4 colour or the nook Colour.?
Hi im waiting for the new kindle touch 4 being launched getting a bit sick of waiting for it. Whats the nook colour reader like is it just as good as or better than the kindle please help thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Kindle Fire (9) vs Nook Color (9)

Much of hardware of these two low-cost tablets is very similar: Both have 7-inch, backlit IPS LCD touch displays with 1024x600 resolutions; both have similar sizes and weights (15.8 oz for Kindle Fire vs 14.6 oz for Nook Color). Both have about 8 hours battery life. Neither have cameras of any sort.

Buy the Kindle Fire if you want a faster CPU: The Kindle Fire has a dual-core 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430; Nook Color has the older 0.8 GHz TI OMAP 3621.

Buy the Kindle Fire if web browsing is a priority to you. Amazon has leveraged their massive cloud computing structure to allow Kindle Fire to optimize the retrieval and presentation of web pages. For both storage and processing, Kindle Fire's new web browser, Silk, figures the most efficient way to present content to the user. If this proves to be as impressive in practice as it's sounding in the product description, it'll be the major factor in many users' decision between Kindle Fire and Nook Color.

Buy the Kindle Fire if you value easy access to movies. Also, when coupled with Amazon Prime (/year), the Kindle Fire can efficiently stream over 10,000 popular movies and TV shows for free.

Buy the Kindle Fire if you prefer to make online purchases from Amazon over Barnes & Noble; choose Amazon if you need to make international ebook purchases.

Buy the Nook Color if you prefer to buy online from Barnes & Nobel over Amazon, or if you value access to B&N's network of off-line, retail stores.

Buy the Nook Color if a microSD card is more important to you than Kindle Fire's ability to automatically store and manage unlimited amounts of Amazon digital content for free in the Amazon Cloud.

  43. QUESTION:
Can Kindle fire support web based video games?
I'm looking for anyone that has an Amazon Kindle Fire and if they are capable of playing multi-person video games with a lot of graphics such as dungeon defender or elder scrolls skyrim for example.

    • ANSWER:
RPG apps are available, all though I haven't tested them personally.
I don't believe any online multi-player apps exist for the Kindle Fire.
Most of those require Windows OS and may require a tablet PC...

I am an owner and we use it regularly with streaming video..apps..and web browsing.
Seems to work fine for us, but perhaps we are not high end users requiring all the bells and whistles like iPad. But for 0 it was a perfect entry point for us and does everything we wanted it to.

I have generated some movie videos in mp4 format which work great.

I fully agree with another question/answer posted regarding B&N and other poster called "Truth"...who seems to be a B&N employee or promoter.

  45. QUESTION:
what is the best way to buy movies online and then saving them to your computer?
my dad is going on a trip and needs the easiest method to download movies onto his computer

    • ANSWER:
Amazon and iTunes allow you to download and save a film to your computer, but you only get a certain amount of time before it expires. With Netflix it is all streaming so it is not actually saved to your computer and you need a constant strong internet connection.

  47. QUESTION:
What is better the nook or the kindle?
I dont really know about either one, but my mom wants one for her birthday. Which one is better? It will either be the nook color or the kindle color (fire). Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Hi, Hunter's mom, I'd recommend Nook Tablet (which is actually Nook Color 2.) You should do your research and read online reviews on Kindle Fire before ordering one - there's a lot of complains from people who got the device that many Kindle Fire units have faulty Wi-Fi and people have a lot of issues connecting to internet. Also, Amazon's own web site has hundreds of reviews of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device. All pro reviewers on the web clearly voiced that Nook Tablet is a much better device with superior performance compared to Kindle Fire. Nook Tablet has been getting rave reviews and it is the best device in it's class. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photoes/movies, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype. Also, it is 4 if sign up for Barnes & Noble membership.
Here's the sample of pro reviews out there:

      CNET:
We streamed Netflix side by side with the Kindle Fire, and head-to-head comparisons were very favorable to the Nook--it simply looked better. Both tablets have the same app, but the Nook Tablet's picture looked more vivid and detailed. The Nook Tablet also has physical volume controls on the side, which come in handy--the Kindle Fire strangely lacks them. The screen, which is a higher-quality IPS display than the Kindle Fire, really shows off Netflix and Hulu Plus to amazing effect...
It's the best screen on a budget tablet that I've ever seen. More storage--both onboard (16GB) and via microSD expansion--and the ability to read EPUB files could be big news for those who want flexibility. There's plenty of expansion room, and you'll have a hard time running out of space for your apps or your magazine downloads.

  48. QUESTION:

  50. QUESTION:
Any suggestions for a long distance relationship?
My bf and i are trying a long distance relationship. But i would like suggestions on how to keep it going and make it work :) I don't want any negative comments please!

    • ANSWER:
Maximize what's available digitally for conversation! Like those listed above.

** Be ready to take and e-mail pics of the little things during the day which made you think of him.

Read great books together, if both of you like reading. (I'm not saying you have to sync yourselves page by page lol, just make sure one isn't too far ahead). You'll always have something to keep the conversation going.

Mail each other sweet snail mail. Stuff which you'd like to share with each other. May be scrap book style, or random stuff you'll know he'll like.

However, be sure to see each other in person AT LEAST once every year... it's a necessity.
Keep your daily online "appointments". Trust is the biggest issue here, and it's somewhat of a comfort to let the other know what you've been up to while you were out, and that he has an idea of what your schedule is like.

      Best of luck!!! =)
