Streaming Movies Online Legal

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is it legal to stream new movies online?
You all know what i mean by streaming movies online. I'm doing it now and I'll keep on doing it but i want to know whether it is legal. As far as i know it is legal because it's just like watching a youtube video so just the host can get blamed. But if it's not then i would appreciate if you tell me and explain why or under what laws? Or if it is legal then also why? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      It is illegal.

      It counts as piracy.

Piracy concerns BOTH the distributor and the consumer of the media. So you can't blame "just the host".

  4. QUESTION:
Is watching online movies that are still in theaters illegal?
I am wondering if watching movies online that are still in theaters is legal or not. I'm not talking about downloading them, just watching them online, free streaming. Please be honest.

    • ANSWER:
Yes they are illegal. i'm an agent who reports illegal sites like that over to the authorities to get them shut down. i spend alot of time in sites like Yahoo Answers, where people talk sending links to each other,so i can get them all down and turn them over to my employers.

  5. QUESTION:
Is it legal to watch movies online if you own the dvd of them?
Please don't answer unless you are sure. I know that it is legal to make copies of your DVDs and watch them on your computer. Many other things are legal which people often assume are not. Is it no different really to do this than to stream a movie directly from your computer over the internet.

    • ANSWER:
Feel free to watch it, the one who upload the movie is illegal if he is not authorized to distribute it online.

  6. QUESTION:
How easy is it to get caught Movie Streaming?
i am talking about sites like dailymotion and megavideo. also is it illegal or legal. i dont want any one word answers or opinions. i wanna know for sure because i have read and read many Q's and A's on this site regarding this and sofar no help. also have people ever got caught just streaming movies uploaded onto other sites? who gets the blame?

    • ANSWER:
First of all yes it is illegal unless the website is paying the original creators to stream that video.

As for getting caught, this would not even be an issue on my mind. I watch movies quite often on watch-movies. Your ISP isn't looking at your online history or videos that you have streamed. They are more worried about direct downloads that are in violation of copyright laws.

All-in-All even if your ISP found out you were streaming movies, no legal action would be taken. Not even a corporate business wants to spend tome and money on court cost, lawyer fees, and all the other legal cost over you streaming video, if anything the website providing the streaming media will be held accountable.

  7. QUESTION:
Is it legal for me to stream movies online?
I've been told that whilst it is illegal for someone to download movies off the internet, streaming them is perfectly legal for the person who is doing the streaming.

i.e. It's only the streaming websites who are breaking the law! Not me or you!

Is this true? I'd feel much more at ease watching movies on megavideo and vidbux knowing that I couldn't get into trouble for it!

    • ANSWER:
It's quasi-legal which means while it's technically illegal to download or watch streaming video of copyrighted media no legal precedent has been set by a successful criminal court trial. But the crackdown is coming and all of you in the US and Canada, and Europe to a lesser extent, need to watch yourselves.

  8. QUESTION:
Is it legal to stream movies online as long as I do not download them?
I am talking about using sites like "alluc" or "moviefather" to find and watch movies. I know that it is illegal to download movies and host them, or make bootlegs, but is it illegal to view them online? Please provide a source where I may verify your answer.
I know it may not be ethical, but is it legal?
I will say it again, please provide a source where I may verify your answer.

  9. QUESTION:
What are the general rules regarding downloading?
Could someone refresh my memory? I believe its okay, aslong the material only gets used privately.

    Looking for:
    -Name on Laws
-Fine, if caught sharing copyrighted movies online
-Wouldn't showing freely available movies, other people uploaded be legal according to creative commons & international law?

  10. QUESTION:
Why is netflix legal? How is this different then watching movies online?
How do movie companies make money if I don't buy there movie and instead watch it on netflix? Why do they allow this?

    • ANSWER:
If you watch netflix movies streamed, you ARE watching them online. Streaming movies on Netflix is legal because Netflix pays the film companies for the right to stream movies. Everybody pays or gets paid. The viewer pays Netflix, Netflix pays the movie company. That's how movie companies make money.

  11. QUESTION:
How do I make an online movie channel?
I wanna make my own online movie channel (streaming old grindhouse horror films, kung-fu films, etc), and I have the means to start it up by streaming the movies live over the internet. Now:

    1) What would I do to secure rights to the movies to show them? Does it require exuberant amounts of money, or does it depend on the distributor?

And 2) What website/server could I use to run my movies on? Can anyone recommend a good one?

    • ANSWER:
Going to sound harsh, but if you have to ask how to do this on yahoo answers, you're not equipped for the task.

Firstly, you'd need a team of people to operate the thing. Everything from the massive servers and bandwidth that is needed, to the lawyers who would deal with the legal side of things, to the computer science technicians who would keep the software running smoothly to the office workers who would keep the financial and customer service side of things working.

Plus something like this doesn't just suddenly get started. The internet is massive and new sites don't get started without marketing...and marketing costs money unless you're absurdly clever (and patient) with getting things started virally. So you'd probably have to spend tons of money on advertising .

Sure, it's not impossible...but like I said, if you have to ask on yahoo answers, you obviously don't have connections in the business. Start with something smaller and try to work your way up with project size.

  12. QUESTION:
What movie and TV series streaming video websites are legally available internationally?
No "bittorrent" or "use an HTTP tunnel" answers, please -- I want to know where I can LEGALLY get episodes of Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc. and movies online outside of the United States.
Hulu is unavailable outside the US.

    • ANSWER:
I think these are legal but I cant be sure (they have more info on the sites about the legality stuff):

      http://surfthechannel.com/
      http://www.free-tv-video-online.info/

They are both available outside the US.

  13. QUESTION:
Is it illegal to watch movies online?
I've always been curious about this. I'm specifically talking about the movies streamed online.
I'm not sure If this is true, but I thought I read somewhere that it's only illegal to upload films (without permission), but that it's legal to view them. Please clarify.

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I dont know if it but I have been doing it since like 2003 and have never gotten in trouble. Torrenting them is illegal to some degree but watching them online isnt unless your the one uploading it.

  14. QUESTION:
How much to make a netflix like service?
I want to create a website that will have movies to watch like netflix.com, for now it will not include dvds(streaming only). So what's the legal procedure to do that? Is that even posiible, If so what kind of budget am i looking into. Remember i don't want to be a competitor of netflix. I want to start a small website to watch movies online, but legally.

    • ANSWER:
"i don't want to be a competitor of netflix. I want to start a small website to watch movies online"

...which would make you a competitor of Netflix.

Basically, you need to set up enough servers to service your customer base, hire the technical staff to set up and maintain the web site, and license your movies from the distributors. Depending on the size of the library you want to carry, you should be able to get something up and running for a few million dollars.

  15. QUESTION:
What License is required to show movies online legally?
Hi everyone. Im planning to open a private membership movies site to be shared with my fellow college mates...but im confused which license to get in order to make the website legal. Can anyone give the idea what license to get and where to get them easily?? Will be great if you could also include price quote.

p/s: it'sa membership site where admission is charged and number of members is up to 10k.

    • ANSWER:
Well I'd go along the lines of what Netflix does. Which is you buy a license from the company you wish to get the movies from which allows them to be shown online. To be honest I have little to no idea how you could accomplish this on a small scale, physical renting I think you can do without a license cause ordinary people can buy their own redboxes. I think that if you want to find out what kind of license you need you should try contacting a federal agency through phone or email, try also contacting Netflix and asking their customer representatives how they attain licenses to stream movies online.

UPDATE: After a little digging I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraViolet_%28system%29 try and check it out, it sounds like what you may be looking for.

Does anybody know of any Hulu-like websites in Canada that allow you to legally view movies (preferrably streaming video) online? I know most of the TV networks now give access to some of their shows, but I've had trouble finding full-length or even older TV shows. Thanks in advance...

    • ANSWER:
There's no (legal) central site like Hulu. The best you can do is go to Canadian Broadcasters' websites and watch streaming episodes. Global and CTV have quite a few shows, but we've got a lot of catching up to do to get to something like Hulu.

  18. QUESTION:
How much internet usage would letmewatchthis/putlocker use?

But the real question is if i watch like an average film ( aprox 2 hours ) how much usage would that probably take up ( bare in mind i am not downloading )

    • ANSWER:

What is the best Movie watching site ?
i really want a easy and great site to watch theatre movies online in good quality and without hassle.

    • ANSWER:
      www.letmewatchthis.com

This is a great website. They're really good with new releases too ( I watched Eclipse the day after it came out)

You just type the movie title into the search bar at the top left hand corner, click on your movie image, and then choose from a list of working links. Just stay away from links provided by megavideo.com because they only let you watch 72 minutes of film before forcing you to pay for a membership.

The site is a free streaming website so it's completely legal. Also, no fees, no surveys, no viruses, no downloading, no memberships. It's a great website and I use it all the time.

  27. QUESTION:
What is the point of having very fast internet connections like 10mb 18mb or 50mb?
Just so you can instantly stream free online movies which are probably illegal, that's the only reason I can think of because even 1mb internet is more then enough speed for normal internet usage now if you have xbox live I can see how you would probably need 3mb or 5mb but not more, and why do cable companies advertise there fast speeds are for gaming and movies, when you cant legally use your high bandwidth for movies

    • ANSWER:
Wait until you work for a company and then you will appreciate the need for higher bandwidth. There are a number of very legal uses for high bandwidth (for example streaming backups to servers), data interconnect between systems.

And yes, in business we will do a lot of video streaming (online conferences, webinars, meetings, voice over IP, etc.).

Businesses require higher bandwidth to make company communications more effective.

What's the quickest (hopefully legal) way to transfer online video to DVD?
I suffer from the fact that people close to me still watch some shows at the actual times they air on network TV, and their tendency is to fall asleep before the programs end. Networks tend to rebroadcast their programs, especially the ones their sister movie studios own, on their web sites. Can these online videos be converted to DVD, hopefully in a legal way?

    • ANSWER:
Hey, usually the online videos are in streaming FLV format. You need 2 steps to convert the online videos to DVD.
      Step 1: Download online video
There are a lot of free online video downloader software which you can use to download the online video. I am now using this free online video downloader, you can download it at: http://www.flash-on-tv.com/free-youtube-downloader.html.
Step 2: Convert the downloaded online videos to DVDs
For converting the downloaded online videos to DVDs, you need some conversion tools. I have a good luck with this Wondershare DVD Converter Studio which is not free but works well for converting videos to DVDs. You can have a free try of it at: http://www.dvd-ripper-copy.com/dvd-converter-studio.html#181.
Hope that will be of help.

  34. QUESTION:
Is watching a movie for free on movie2k legal?
I'm not asking if the site itself is legal, but I am asking if I myself can get in trouble if I watch some movies on it.

Is it like lymewire where you can get sued big time?

    • ANSWER:
No, it's not illegal to watch, but it is illegal to download, burn to DVD and sell for profit.

The only thing is a lot of online streaming sites have problems with viruses and stuff like that, so you've got to be careful with that. Movie2k has a reputation for being relatively safe, but you should still have your safeguards up.

  37. QUESTION:
Is watching TV and Movies online illegal?
I want to know if watching movies or tv under copyright online is punishable by law. I know for one downloading movies directly to your hard drive is a offense, so is uploading them for people to download. But what about the video streaming sites that allow you to watch them? I'm not talking about the legal sites like Netflix etc.
As your not paying for the film are you breaking the law? Has anyone ever been caught for copyright infringement because they watched a movie that's still showing in cinemas online?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Streaming or downloading is exactly the same, legally. Streaming from an unauthorized site is just as illegal as downloading from such a site. IF the site is legal (as netflix, for example), then it's not an issue. But you can assume that if there is no cost to stream, it is NOT legal.

  38. QUESTION:

  39. QUESTION:
In the UK is it legal to stream a video rental copy?
Can you explain how a company like Blockbuster or Netflix are able to stream video/movies when they have bought a movie to rent to people? Does the licence contained on the DVD as a 'rental' copy cover them to provide an online streaming service to more than one person for that DVD? Where can I find out more information for an essay?
Thanks David O but that's referring to TV shows and licencing across the Atlantic. What I'm asking is if say a UK person owns a DVD that is able to be rented to others, like Blockbuster, then does that licence allow them to do so? Say the movie is Skyfall, Blockbuster buy a 'licenced rental copy' and then decide, for whatever reason, to stream the video online, are they able to do that? Does the original licence cover them? Or do they have to apply for a special licence? Seems to me it would be a case of once they have bought ' a commercial rental licence' as part of the DVD movie, that allows them to 'rent' the DVD out. That should then cover them online to stream/rent it to others as no matter how many persons are watching it at the time. Because they have a licence to accept money from people to watch that DVD movie. Am I wrong in thinking that a DVD licence allows you an unrestricted amount of people it can be rented to?

    • ANSWER:
Netflix has license agreements with studios and television networks to provide content for domestic and foreign distribution. For example this article about CBS starts off: CBS Corp. and Netflix Nov. 1 announced they have extended their content streaming agreement for select programming in Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

      http://www.homemediamagazine.com/cbs/cbs-netflix-extend-foreign-streaming-license-agreement-28738

Just use google and wikepedia and you'll find loads of information.

  41. QUESTION:
Is it legal to watch streaming video on the internet?
I have a friend who is freaking out because she think watching streaming video online is illegal. Is it illegal to watch it online? Please put a direct link to where it says it is or it is not. So I can show her proof and she can stop complaining

    • ANSWER:
It depends what site you are talking about. If you are using netflix's fee-based streaming, or official streaming content from network sites like abc.com or hulu, then rest assured the video is legal. If it's from youtube, mega video, or some video sharing site, you can't be sure the content is legal, and if it's a movie or tv show, most likely it isn't legal from these sites.

  42. QUESTION:

I want to be able to watch some lesbian romances for FREE. I can't find a site that will let me for free, with no risky shit on it.

    • ANSWER:
TBH it is almost impossible to stream sexy vids online without being taken for a ride. Your best bet is (and its not a legal one) to download full videos via torrents. You should easily find some torrents if you search for something like 'lesbian romance torrent'.
Let me know whether you know how to download torrents. I could talk you through it. x

  43. QUESTION:
I just bought a usb stick today and want to watch stuff from it on my tv, how do I do it?
I have an LG tv but the manual for it is lost or already thrown out so I don't know what files will work on the tv. I copied some videos from youtube using DVDVideoSoft Free Studio and those files are MPEG-4 Movie. The usb stick is TDK make and 16GB. I don't know what else information to add.

When I get it working and plug my usb into the back of my tv, does it automatically come up or do I have to search for it first by using the av button? I basically know nothing about computers. I seen some people in work with shows on their usb. I was told utorrent is a good place to get stuff, so if you want as an extra question, where is good to download shows and movies? If you really want cause I need cause I know next to nothing about this stuff, how exactly does downloading shows and movies from these sites work, what exactly do I press step-by-step? Thank you!
AVDADDY you include us with your own opinion, does it make you feel more comfortable, more safe. I think working in a boring job to pay for this stuff is a steal. If you are an honest worker working in one of these industries I still think it is no measure of health to adjust yourself to a corrupt system like advertising for example. Come down off your high horse, open your eyes and talk to me, we can make sense.

    • ANSWER:
The first thing to do is to download the Owner's Manual for your particular TV from LG using the first link I've posted below. Often the USB port on TV's can access pictures (jpg files) on a flash drive but not much else.

I use a Western Digital TV Live (or TV Live +) media player to play a wide variety of files that are stored in various computer formats. it has a pair of USB inputs that can handle either flash drives or external hard drives and a Ethernet port for streaming. You'll want the plus version for paid subscription streaming content such as Netflix. It comes with a remote and menus that are easy to navigate and plenty of online support. Other similar media players exist such as the Roku.

If you plan on downloading lots of files such as YouTube videos you'll find a download manager to be useful. I like one called JDownloader, which is free and open source. It can also reassemble multipart files from other sources.

You'll want to avoid torrents, especially if you are contemplating downloading copyrighted material, since you will in most cases also be uploading (seeding) copyrighted material. Such activities are illegal in many parts of the world.

Many filehosting sites exist that will allow anyone to upload a file on the company servers and allow uploaders to share it with whoever they choose to give the download link to. They have legitimate uses such as sharing family pictures with friends and family. They are also misused for other purposes. Filehosting sites are required to remove infringing files if they receive notification from a copyright holder that a file is not supposed to be there. As long as a filehosting site complies with takedown requests, they do not have to self police for possibly infringing files.

There are various forums, blogs and link aggregation sites where links to files that have been left on the hosting sites are discussed or listed. Such discussion sites do not themselves host any files that might be deemed illegal. Sites like ddlvalley.eu, rlsbb.com, and avaxhome.ws are a few examples. Once you start finding links to files, you can find other discussion sites by using parts of those links as a search term.

Legal content that is in the public domain can often be found on archive.org.

Where can i watch a r rahman live concert show live online for free?
hello any one help me, i want to watch a r rahman live concert show live online for free is any website which provides live streaming of that?

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you can try something called “satellite TV to PC software” which is becoming popular for good reasons. It works by receiving satellite TV signals over the Internet and converting them into a live, high resolution video feed on your desktop. When I first heard of this I wondered if it was even legal. It turns out it is completely legal, because these are FTA (free to air) satellite stations which are being broadcast from all over the world. The software just allows you to watch everything at any time anywhere without a satellite dish or receiver.Once you download the software you can instantly watch 3,000+ channels of movies, local and international news, live sports, TV shows, special events, music channels, kids channels, history, education, nature, special programming… It's much more variety than what I was getting from my local cable company. And it's all free. There's a small one-time fee for the software and that's it. There are no subscription fees or monthly charges… Nothing else to pay for…Ever. Here are the detailed reviews and comparisons of the Top 6 Internet Television Products on the market:

  47. QUESTION:
What do I need to stream these video clips and others?
There are many video clips that I am able to watch but I am going to post a link here http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=leave+it+to+beaver&qpvt=leave+it+to+beaver&FORM=VDRE#x37y0 ..and if you`ll look at some of the video clips on Leave It To beaver (which is what I chose at random) you`ll notice that some of the clips have an arrow in the bottom right corner of the clip/box. My computer will not let me watch these. When I click on those it will start to bring up a page and will either disappear and then the main page I looked them all up on will go back to where I started..or it will disappear and the main page will give an error report. At the bottom of the clips/boxes on this link you will also see names like Zimbio and Video Detective. These have the little crooked arrow and I can`t watch them. Are these the names of the program that those clips are under? Do I have to have the program that matches the name of those..Zimbio etc..or is there something I can download free that will play anything I want? This is just to watch/stream videos from online, not to download them at all. Question 2: I was told about some sites to use to stream full length movies online and was told there was no sign up..no charge etc...so I tried a couple and they either have no place to choose/select a movie or they want me to sign up for the program. There`s;Turner Classic Movies..Hulu TV...and Bimeo (Vimeo?) and AMC. I am new to all this. I want to just go on and watch movies online without having to sign a contract..sign in to any site etc. What am I doing wrong? I told this issue to the person who told me about these sites and they reaffirmed that I should NOT have to sign in to any place..that they didn`t and that it weas all free. Would someone take me step by step through what I need to do.
    http://www.bing.com/search?q=leave+it+to+beaver&form=B8SMDF&pc=B8SM&src=IE-SearchBox
Click on this page and if you go down six to "videos of leave it to beaver" ..that is what I do and go into those sites and just play the available clips/shows right off the site.I don`t have to sign up for anything..don`t have to download anything..Aren`t there regular movie sites that do the same thing? Everything I try ; tv.inbox.com video-buzz etc all require me to download their program.I just want to be able to look up a movie..click on it..and watch it..Like I can do from the link I provided here..except I want to find full length movies.

    • ANSWER:
      > All of those sites which claim to allow users for watching movies online, are scams.
      > They will trick you into signing up and filling out surveys, also can trick you into paying money.

      > If you want to watch full movies, you should buy original (legal) movie DVD's or Blu-Rays and watch in your DVD player or Blu-Ray player.

  48. QUESTION:
Is there a legal website where you can pay to download movies and music?
Hi, I was wondering if there was a website where you have unlimited access to download movies and music which was legal. I don't mind paying and it would be good if you only had to pay a certain amount per month or year. I know it's illegal to not pay and download movies but is there a site where you can pay and download? Thanks everyone so much! 😀

Where can I find Marilyn Monroe movies for free, and legally, online?
I am currently in search of movies that star Marilyn Monroe, online. Also for free, but I'd like it to be legal. Can anyone help me?

    • ANSWER:
I think it is only illegal if you download the movie onto your hard drive. Anything that
is on the Internet is open to you. The people who are breaking the law are those who
are uploading the movies onto the Net.

So - if you can find them to stream, go for it.
