I saw a commercial about Samsung's Media Connect. Am I on the right track with that device?

    • ANSWER:
Depends on your tv and computer. Assuming it is a HD tv (one with a HDMI input). ATI has video cards that output HDMI, as well as many laptops. There are other connection options but that should be the one with the fewest problems.

Storing DVD's on your HD is not a straight forward process as they are normally copy protected.

How do i restrick the amount of internet used on a computer?
My step sisters are at our house for the next month and they go an lock themselves in their room and stream movies and TV shows on their laptops. This makes the rest of the houses internet incredibly slow. Am i able to restrict the amount of internet they can use at a given time? i dont want to block them off, but make it so that if they try and watch a movie, it will take at least a whole day to download it?

    • ANSWER:
It's pretty easy, depending on the router you have.

Look up "QoS" or Quality of Service settings for your particular router.
You can regulate speed of connections based on
-- which machine ( which mac address or IP address)
-- what protocol ( streaming protocols look a whole lot different than torrents, and they both look different than email)

again - it depends on your home router. Get the admin controls, and the instructions.. then have at it.
      Excellent use of technology!

  10. QUESTION:
Which processor should I buy and keep in mind price is a huge factor for me?
This computer is *only* being used for tv streaming (web based) and movies/tv shows on HD it will not be used for any gaming, or disc based movies.

Intel E3200 Cache 1mb processor 2.4ghz dual core
    or
Intel E1200 Cache 512 processor 1.4ghz dual core

    What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
How much of a price difference is there?

The performance difference for streaming TV shows wouldn't even be noticeable... Are both systems equipped with the same video adapter? That would have a greater impact than the CPU choice. I'd go with the E1200 unless they're close in price, in which case it makes sense to get the E3200 for just a few bucks more.

Are you familiar with a WDTV Live? They work well, and play (virtually) all common file formats directly.

      http://wdc.com/global/products/specs/?driveID=969&language=1

      http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822481-REG/Western_Digital_WDBHG70000NBK_HESN_TV_LIVE_Streaming_Media.html

It's easy. You connect the WDTV Live to your computer using Ethernet,* then, after you configure file sharing, the WDTV Live reads media files stored on your computer hard drive. (*WDTV Live has built-in wireless, but works best when hard-wired to an Ethernet connection, or attached USB drive.)

For it's a no-brainer. You don't need to custom build a PC just to play media files on your TV.

If your specific goal is to use a PC as a media player, then you might want to look up what the requirements are to make XBMC run well,

Or a blu ray player that connects to the internet. Make sure the blu ray has the netflix feature. It should have that plus youtube, pandora radio, amazon and blockbuster movies.

      From the Terms of Use:

"YOU MAY INSTANTLY WATCH ON UP TO SIX UNIQUE AUTHORIZED NETFLIX READY DEVICES. YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO INSTANTLY WATCH SIMULTANEOUSLY ON TWO SUCH DEVICES AT ANY GIVEN TIME. For certain membership plans, you may instantly watch simultaneously on additional Netflix ready devices within your household."

  16. QUESTION:
How do i get my Netflix movies onto my TV through a Blu-Ray player?
We recently purchased a Blu-Ray player and we are trying to access our Netflix movies, but we keep getting a message that says "reference code 300". What does this mean and how can we proceed and stream our movies to our TV? Please help. Immediate answers please.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Assuming your BD player supports Netflix

      a) Connect it to your home network - you may need a lan cable or a wireless ethernet adaptor
      b) Follow the Netflix instructions, posted on the Netflix web site, for your model.

  17. QUESTION:
Is NCIS available to instant stream/watch from tv and computer for Netflix?
I don't wanna get it if its not. And if its not, know of any other movie/tv show instant streamers LIKE Netflix that has a wider range of shows to instant stream. Also that is a reasonable price like Netflix ? Much appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
No, NCIS is not on Netflix or any subscription streaming service. You will have to get it on a per season or per episode basis. That's going to be very expensive, unfortunately.

Vudu, owned by Walmart, has 10 seasons available: http://www.vudu.com/movies/#!content/239071
Amazon.com also has all the seasons http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078YWFZY/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_2_0

In general, Netflix has the most TV shows and movies out of all of the streaming subscription services, but it doesn't have everything. No subscription service has everything.

  18. QUESTION:
Is there any device that can stream mp4 movies to my TVs from a computer, harddrive or internal storage?
I have a fast home network and plenty of harddrive space. I save my movies in mp4 format (not h.264). I can view the movies on my computer but I want to stream them and be able to select the movies from the other TVs in the house. There's plenty of devices that stream mp3s but how can you stream mp4s? Ideally I would like the movies stored on one networked hard drive.

  19. QUESTION:
How can I watch films from my laptop on my TV?
Is there a cable to plug into my laptop and TV so I can watch my streamed movies on the TV screen instead of my laptop screen?

I used to be able to do it with my old mobile phone, it plugged into the audio jack and then red, yellow, and white plugs into the TV.

I have a Sony Vaio notebook, and a Goodmans TV, if that's any help.
I want to know what TYPE OF CABLE, not where to get it.

    • ANSWER:
Well I'm happy to inform you technology has improved from using the old red, white, and yellow jacks.
Nowadays most computers and TV's come with an HDMI port. If you get an HDMI cable you will be able to share High Definition video and audio from the computer.
But what if you dont have fancy technology?
Well most semi-old computers and TV's have an S-video port.
You can simply use an S-Video cable to share Standard Definition video with the TV... But you need a special cable with a 3.5mm "headphone" jack on one end and the red and white audio jacks on the other end to supply the TV with audio.

But what if I don't have either of those?!?
Don't worry there is one last option. I have NEVER seen a laptop without an analog monitor output jack. This is the big blue port on the back (usually near where the power cord plugs into the PC). Most half-decent TV's have an analog monitor input jack (looks just like the one on your laptop). This will (just like S-Video) only share video. You still need the audio cable described above to supply sound to the TV.

Depending on the TV and laptop you may or may not have some of these ports.
Your best bet is using the Analog Monitor Output. That is the most common but if you have HDMI, use it. It's HD and much easier to set up and use (you only need one cable).
      Hope this helps!

  20. QUESTION:
How can I stream movie/video files to tv?
My dad is a a little too old for technology but likes the comfort of watching movies at home where he can pause anytime and make a trip to the washroom or resupply on snacks. I have many movies saved on my computer that he wants to watch.

    However:
    - I'm not always available to lend him my laptop and stream movies through HDMI cable.
    - I don't want to look into using the dvd player USB port because neither my hard drive or USB drives can be detected by the player because apparently it is not FAT32 format (for those who know what I'm talking about).
    - I can't afford to buy him a laptop to use whenever he needs it.
    - don't want to buy a new USB that is FAT32 format because they don't have enough space to hold at least one movie.
    - I don't have an xbox 360/ps3 or any game system that will allow him to save and watch movies through there. Also, those are much complicated for him to learn.

Please share your best solutions without listing answers such as:
    - just buy DVD/Bluray etc. No because that will cost too much
    - just buy a USB and plug and play. No because already tried that
    - just go and watch movies in the theater. No because I already explained his comfort watching at home.

Anyways you get the idea. Simple and Easy. Thank you in advance!

  25. QUESTION:
How do you stream Netflix movies on Playstation 3?
I have a Playstation 3, but seeing Netflix's new move to allow Xbox 360 to stream movies to it, I'm really envying those Xbox 360 users. My question is, is there any way you can watch movies on PS3. I have a monthly subscription to Netflix, broadband connection, wireless router, a PS3, PC and the TV. Someone please make it work! Thanks!
I know it isn't supported, but is there a way to work around it?

    • ANSWER:
      Ignore those other "Answers"

The real answer to this question is:

YES you can stream Netflix through your PS3 and it works just as well as the 360 or that cheap Roku box.

      Go to:
      http://www.themediamall.com/playon

The PlayOn media app allows you to stream content from Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, CBS, ESPN, and CNN through your PS3 by utilitizing your computer as a media server which is supported by most next gen consoles. The only requirements are a computer, an internet connection, and that the computer & PS3 are connected to the same network.

Also, don't buy a Roku player. They have horrible resolution, playback problems, and you can only change the queue from the internet.

      :: UPDATE ::
I installed PlayOn on a computer that connects to the same router / hub as my PS3, entered my Netflix password in the PlayOn program on my computer, and connected to the PlayOn server after it appeared under the video options on my PS3. It works great (connects directly to your netflix online queue) and also gives you access to news outlets and other media streams such as youtube. Great program.

This is definitely the answer to your question.

Stream a movie on my computer hard drive to my TV via my receiver
Rent Movies online (like Amazon....etc) and stream them to my TV via my receiver

I need to use my receiver for sound coupled with the fact that I have a single HDMI input going form my receiver to my TV. Wireless preferred

If Netflix is streaming through some other device, then there is no problem.

If the computer is connected to the TV, then yes, if you set the up as two separate monitors rather than just a presentation mode duplicate (in Windows, right click the desktop, go to Display, and someplace there will be an option to "extend desktop to second monitor". Appears to be a gaming laptop of some sort. My guess is a very expensive Dell as they still use the low end 10/100 ethernet even in some of their more expensive systems.
      You have GT 650M
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

      Game Booster
used to be freeware and I think now is trialware. It shuts unused processes.
You can uninstall software you won't use, and get a startup manager software to not start what you don't need. Defrag the HDD, add CCleaner software maybe.

Laptop gaming never reaches the level of tower PCs, and Lenovo Y580 has GTX 660M which is a little better and was selling it cheaper than your Dell [as I guess], but, it will do what it does. Your gaming should be a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450, and below NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

  39. QUESTION:
Are all movies on Netflix available for online streaming?
So, Scream 4 is coming out on Friday, and I would like to watch the first three movies again. I'm thinking of using the Netflix free month trial to stream the movies from my TV. Are all Netflix movies available for streaming online? How would the process work? Do I watch one movie, then can watch another one?
***Edit: Do you know if the Scream movies are available for online streaming on Netflix?

    • ANSWER:
Are all Netflix movies available for streaming online?
-- No, not all movies on netflix are available for streaming.
      How would the process work?
-- Depending on your TV, it has some search menu you can use where you connect it to your netflix account by following the on screen directions, and then either search for movies or, more usually, queue them on your computer and then see them in the queue on your TV, and then play them.
Do I watch one movie, then can watch another one?
-- For most netflix plans, there is no limit to the number of instant-watch movies/tv shows you can watch. You do not have to finish one before starting another.

A great way to see what's on streaming is using http://instantwatcher.com
For example searching for Scream there:
      http://instantwatcher.com/titles?q=Scream

Shows no listings that match the movie, so it's not available for instant watch.

You can of course also search netflix, but instantwatcher has a great interface.

If you are looking for steamier movies, check out the list being built at http://porn-on-netflix.com

Is Apple TV a good solution for my needs?

    • ANSWER:
Is your computer an Apple? If so, then you could get an Apple TV and use Airplay to stream your content to an Apple TV. If you're using a Windows computer, then you can join the rest of the world and use DLNA to stream media instead of Airplay. There are tons of DLNA devices that would suit your needs, including Logitech Revue (Google TV), Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and more.

I'm partial to the Logitech Revue, but mostly because I refuse to buy into Apple's closed ecosystem.

Apple TV is a good product for that. .

A company called Roku also makes one (they make more than one to fit your needs):

I have a handful of external hard drives and thought it might be cool to copy some movies over to them that way we could setup our own "on demand" thing on our home network. That way we could load movies onto it and then be able to stream the movies onto the TV's that we have plugged into computers on our network.

  45. QUESTION:
How do I watch NetFllix movies on my TV?
I have an HDTV and I have a netflix account. How do I instantly watch (stream) netflix movies from my PC to my TV? Do I need a special cable? I heard of something called an S cable, or HDMI cable, or V cable.

    • ANSWER:
Well the way I connect my laptop computer to my HDTV is with a cable called a VGA Cable. Then I change my video cards output to also show on TV/second monitor. I only use this to play movies that I have on the computers hard drive. Now The way I steam Netflix instant movies are through my Netflix ready devices like my xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Now the Nintendo WII console. Also their are many HD TVs out their that are also Netflix capable in which you do not need any other devices. The same goes with Netflix ready blue ray players OR you could purchase a device from the Netflix website to that connects to the internet and the HDTV which can make ANY TV play Netflix instant movies.

If you just want to connect your computer to the HDTV than I suggest you find out the type of video out put your computer and as well as the type of inputs your TV has. Bring this info to your local electronic store so they can show you the best possible cable that will give you the best possible picture based on the type of outputs and inputs of the devices.

Basketball games are streamed and I usually watch them on my laptop. I am looking to buy a bigger tv this fall and have seen some with wifi capability. Will I be able to somehow watch the game on the bigger tv screen without hooking the tv to the computer with a cable? Or is the wifi only for watching movies and tv shows like hulu?

  48. QUESTION:
can i usb to rca cable transfer video and audio from a laptop to a tv?
In other words can it be used by plugging in a usb to your laptop and rca to a tv for streaming movies or just transferring video and audio.

    • ANSWER:
As far as I know you need some kind of video output from your video card. Or a usb to video device and make sure it has a video out. Alot of usb to audio/ video are video capture devices. They allow you to input audio video to a pc. You want the opposite, the signal from your pc out to a tv. I used to have a a monitor cable that had a yellow video out. It worked but it confused my computer and my computer would'nt recognize my monitor and so I had no control over resolution or screen settings. The cable you speak of is usually designed to work with a celll phone ,camera or camcorder or other device where audio and video is being output from the devices usb port.
